Greg Smith outshines Ponting

Ricky Ponting hit a masterly 65, his highest score in the Friends Life t20, but it was not enough to prevent Essex from ending Surrey’s run of four successive victories with an eight-wicket triumph in front of a crowd of nearly 15,000 at The Oval.Hamish Rutherford, the New Zealand batsman, gave Essex a flying start in pursuit of a target of 149 with 30 off 17 balls before Greg Smith and Owais Shah shared a second wicket partnership of 98 in 12 overs to enable them to cruise home with seven balls to spare.Their fourth win puts them alongside Hampshire at the top of the South Division although they have an inferior run rate and have played two games more.Ponting, who had scored only 35 runs in his three previous innings in the competition with a highest score of 19, found himself at the crease in the second over after Steve Davies had got a leading edge to his first ball from Graham Napier and ballooned it back to the bowler.Jason Roy had already hit two fours off Shaun Tait in the first over and he struck two more off David Masters in the third but he and Ponting had added only 43 in six overs when Roy was run out for 30 by Ryan ten Doeschate’s throw from midwicket.Ponting and Glenn Maxwell were no quicker in a third wicket stand of 45 in seven overs but the former Australia captain looked positively skittish as he scooped ten Doeschate to fine leg for four and drove Reece Topley over long off to reach his fifty off 40 balls. He had lost Maxwell when he was brilliantly caught one-handed by Tim Phillips on the midwicket boundary off ten Doeschate and it was Phillips who held the catch at long-on to get rid of Ponting off Topley after he had made his 65 off 54 balls with six fours and a six.It had been another brilliant performance by the 38-year-old who last week finished his first-class career with an unbeaten 169.Essex did well to restrict Surrey to 148 for 6 and did even better with the bat, Rutherford setting the pace with two fours and two sixes before he was well caught at deep backward square-leg off Jon Lewis. Then Smith took over, accelerating to 62 off 42 balls with four fours and three sixes, and Shah gave him all the support he needed with 46 off 45 balls, including two fours and a six.

Hogg thrives on controversial pitch

Lancashire face an anxious wait to discover whether they face a points penalty for a sub-standard pitch after 18 wickets fell on day one of their Championship encounter with Division Two leaders Northamptonshire.

Lancashire face an anxious wait to discover whether they face a points penalty for a sub-standard pitch after 18 wickets fell on day one of their Championship encounter with Division Two leaders Northamptonshire.Just six weeks before Old Trafford is scheduled to host the third Ashes Test, one of their pitches is under scrutiny for the second time in a year. But the Test match wicket is more central on the square than this surface.Jack Birkenshaw, an ECB pitch inspector, is expected to rule that outstanding swing and seam bowling and indifferent shot selection were the major factors in Northamptonshire being dismissed for 62 and Lancashire reaching 121 for 8 in reply although he has delayed his final verdict until after witnessing the second day’s play. The dramatic events follow just over 12 months after Lancashire escaped a points penalty, when spin claimed 36 of the 40 wickets to fall in their 205-run defeat to Worcestershire on the same pitch. That pitch was given the benefit of the doubt because the square had been turned 90 degrees as part of Old Trafford’s redevelopment.Like 12 months ago, the two sides were confronted by a dry surface, which prompted them both to field two spinners, but it was the seamers – and particularly the remarkable form of Lancashire’s Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg – that set the theme for the day. After winning the toss and bowling first in humid conditions, Lancashire’s new ball pair destroyed Northamptonshire’s batting line-up.Chapple, who claimed five wickets as Lancashire dismissed Essex for 20 last week, began the collapse by inducing Kyle Coetzer into edging low to second slip off the fourth ball of the day. While Chapple produced problems with his seam movement, Hogg was more effective at swinging the ball – particularly with the inswingers that bowled Steven Crook and last man Azarullah – and finished with a career best 7 for 27.Northamptonshire’s demise in only 29.5 overs was the lowest opposition score at Old Trafford since Yorkshire were dismissed for 67 in 1999 and Lancashire’s last 23 championship wickets have now cost only 87 runs. That Simon Katich, Lancashire’s Australian overseas batsman, is the top scorer on either side with 30 gives a guide to the difficult conditions.”We were 80-odd for three so the pitch isn’t that bad and there has probably been some indifferent batting and good bowling on both sides,” claimed Hogg. “It’s been very humid which obviously helps the ball swing and it has moved off the seam and any time you get that combination you have a chance of getting some wickets.”Lancashire had equal difficulties against the new ball with emerging allrounder David Willey claiming two early wickets, winning an lbw decision against Ashwell Prince when he shuffled across his stumps while opener Luis Reece had his off-stump clipped by a full-length seaming delivery. They recovered with Andrea Agathangelou forging a 44-run stand with Katich, but lost five wickets for 16 runs to underline the difficulty for new batsmen settling on this wicket. It took a determined, unbroken 20-run ninth wicket stand between Tom Smith and Stephen Parry, who followed Katich’s lead by leaving any delivery that did not threaten the stumps, to guide Lancashire into a potentially decisive 59-run lead. Trailing Northamptonshire by 33 points with a game in hand, they will hope batting conditions – and the prospect of a points penalty – ease sufficiently to allow them to extend their lead and increase the prospect of gaining ground in the division two title race on the leaders.

Magnificent Root secures stunning victory

Joe Root produced arguably the most substantial innings of his fledgling career to banish the pessimism that had fallen prematurely upon Yorkshire’s season

Joe Root produced arguably the most substantial innings of his fledgling career to banish the pessimism that had fallen prematurely upon Yorkshire’s season and leave Durham contemplating the sort of defeat that Riverside folklore had deemed all but impossible. Root got out with the scores level, to a ball delivered by Callum Thorp off a few paces, but as he had 182 at the time and Yorkshire won by four wickets from the next ball, he will be forgiven that.History was entirely on Paul Collingwood’s side when he declared Durham’s second innings late on the third day and left Yorkshire needing 336 for victory. No opposing side has ever successfully chased a target of that magnitude in Chester-le-Street and this was April, with the trees still barely in leaf and the council mowers leaving ruts in the nearby parks. But Root, young of body but mature of brain, has already displayed a prodigious appetite for big challenges. Durham will rue two close calls that might well have turned the game as he neared his century. Had he been adjudged run out on 87, when Mark Stoneman struck direct from point, or given out caught off the glove by Paul Collingwood on 93, when he skittishly reverse-swept Will Smith, the story might have been very different. But it was not. Those blips apart, his certainty was striking. When Yorkshire secured the fourth-largest run chase in their history with 6.1 overs to spare – all of them achieved in the past eight years – Root was gingerly strapping off his pads, protecting a finger battered by Chris Rushworth during his six-hour stay, after guiding Yorkshire to a victory that few imagined was within their compass. An enterprising unbeaten half-century by Adil Rashid also played its part, allowing Root the liberty to play within himself after tea.Collingwood, Durham’s captain, was magnanimous in defeat. “We have seen an exceptional innings today by Rooty. I really think it’s so impressive how a young lad can play an innings like that. We threw everything at him and he came through it. He has a steady head and a superb technique. The rhythm of his innings, everything about it, was exceptional. I’ve got absolutely no qualms about the decisions. The run-out was probably too close to call and, as for the catch, I was appealing for lbw as well.”I still don’t know the pitch well enough and as a home captain I should do. This has taken me by surprise. In the past year we have bowled sides out for less than 150 repeatedly to win games on similar-looking pitches. Unfortunately this pitch just seemed to die in pace.”One of the enduring images of England’s winter is of Root blocking. He blocked in Nagpur and he blocked again in Auckland. Measure it in terms of sun block and his entire winter was factor 50. It was rarely pretty, but he fulfilled his protective role perfectly. On this occasion, he made do with factor 15 and let himself live a little.Sometimes you watched this mere slip of a lad committing every sinew to England’s cause in the winter and feared he might never play a shot again. Thrown into England’s ranks so young, his game was narrowed down into an obsessive battle for survival.Root placed the innings above his double century against Hampshire last season, a defensive innings between the showers to save a game. “I set out my stall at the beginning of the season to start to win matches for Yorkshire and I’m really pleased I managed to contribute,” he said. “England definitely stood me in good stead. I have definitely grown because of it. I just try and play the situation and if that means bat long, I try to bat long. The pitch was a lot deader than it was on the first couple of days.”Yorkshire lost three wickets by lunch. Chris Rushworth removed Adam Lyth and Phil Jaques – the latter to a fifth-ball duck – in the space of one over, and Andrew Gale has also perished, an attempted cut at Keaton Jennings which flew to Collingwood at slip. Then Jonny Bairstow’s love-hate relationship with the pull shot continued. It got him out twice in the match, Ben Stokes was the bowler second time round as Bairstow again tried to pull with control and picked out the finer of two catchers. But Root reached his hundred, only his fifth in first-class cricket, with an off-drive against Scott Borthwick and by tea the rate was down to 3.5 runs an over.Stokes, looking fit and fired up, found a bit of swing ahead of the second new ball to dismiss Gary Ballance, who was caught at the wicket with 102 needed. But Rashid played with attacking intent, so enabling Root to tick along and – almost – bat through to victory. When the second new ball came, Yorkshire’s target was down to 53 from 24 overs – and Root lashed Rushworth’s first delivery with it to the cover boundary. It was some statement; it was some innings.

Youth rewarded as Edwards shines

George Edwards claimed three wickets and Tim Linley four as Derbyshire were bowled out for 219 on the first day at The Oval

One of the main gripes from Surrey fans this season – we can take the results as read – has been the lack of exposure for their academy graduates. Players such as George Edwards, Dominic Sibley, Tom Curran and Matt Dunn are the talk of the terraces; spectators giving their accounts of the exploits of this new generation from their outings in 2nd XI cricket, or the exceptionally competitive Surrey club competition. But what start out as rave reviews often descend into soap-box rants about what some fans perceive as a selection policy discriminating against youth. Before this match, Surrey had used 19 players in the County Championship, of which only two were under 23 years of age and five aged 37 or over. While no one can doubt the ability of most of that five – Ricky Ponting, Vikram Solanki, Zander de Bruyn, Gary Keedy and Jon Lewis – and the success they have enjoyed throughout their careers, experience counts for very little if your team has not won a game. And so, in this must-win encounter against fellow relegation scrappers Derbyshire, who pulled themselves out of the bottom two with consecutive victories against Sussex and Middlesex, 21-year-old Edwards became Surrey’s youngest Championship player this season. Finally, youth was given a chance. He couldn’t have asked for a better pitch; one that looked scuffed and worn but played like a traditional Oval pitch, with pace, bounce and good carry – all of which was plain to see in Chris Tremlett’s first over. It took him four balls to use it to full effect, when a good length delivery rose and took the edge of Ben Slater’s bat through to Batty at second slip.Edwards replaced Tremlett in the 11th over and immediately impressed. He was brisk and, more importantly, controlled as he used his height to cause some discomfort off a good length, forcing Paul Borrington and Wayne Madsen to play within themselves into the second hour. But having faced 70 balls, with only 11 to his name, Madsen, the Division’s leading run-scorer, lost his nerve and drove at a ball that was there for leaving, giving Rory Burns a routine catch at point and Edwards his first wicket of the season. It was in Edwards’ afternoon session that he really started to express himself and give us a peek into what might lie ahead, with an excellent seven-over spell that saw him return two wickets for just 15 runs. Continuing from the Pavilion End after lunch, he set about unsettling Borrington and the usually unflappable Shiv Chanderpaul. The Derbyshire opener was the first to lose his nerve, eyes lighting up when Edwards gave him the chance to free his arms, only to be beaten for pace and edge to first slip.Chanderpaul, who had made his way into the forties after toying with Batty’s offspinners like they had been sent down for his own amusement, proved a tougher nut to crack. Here was a man who has never been bested in a game of patience – time just doesn’t stretch far enough. Instead, Edwards went for the short stuff, which Chanderpaul managed to evade successfully, until one grazed his grill.A readjustment of his helmet delayed the follow-up ball. When it arrived – a full delivery from wider on the crease, with a hint of swing into the left-hander – Chanderpaul could not prevent it from hitting his pads. It looked to have pitched outside leg stump but the umpire was happy enough to send the West Indian on his way.For all the championing of youth, Tim Linley eclipsed Edwards with four wickets, finishing off the Derbyshire innings late in the day. Rarely has a bowler worn the tag of workhouse as proudly, ever willing to steam in, tumble and appeal exuberantly for the cause. He curtailed a late fightback, led by Tom Poynton’s 37, to cap off an efficient day in the field for Surrey. The pitch did seem to dull throughout the day, and looks like it could deteriorate by the third day. With that in mind, Surrey will aim to score quickly on Friday and fashion a lead before putting their spinners to the task of bowling Derbyshire out again. Zafar Ansari and Batty combined for two wickets in 27 first-day overs – Batty taking his first Championship wicket since the second innings of the Durham fixture at this ground back in May.

Victoria’s batsmen failed to take proper advantage of the start their openers Chris Rogers and Rob Quiney had provided as Tasmania fought back on day two of the Sheffield Shield match at Bellerive Oval.Needing outright points to give themselves a chance of reaching the competition final, the Tigers declared on their overnight 6 for 369, but were initially frustrated by a sturdy union between Rogers and Quiney. They were eventually separated by Luke Butterworth, and regular wickets then fell across the afternoon and evening to give the hosts a chance of claiming first-innings points. The part-timer Mark Cosgrove chimed in with a pair of breakthroughs, while Evan Gulbis and James Faulkner also found a way through.David Hussey was left unbeaten on 46, and his quick scoring on the third morning may be pivotal to the contest with rain forecast for the weekend.
