Injured Junaid unlikely for Newlands

Junaid Khan is a major doubt for Pakistan ahead of the second Test against South Africa

Junaid Khan, the left-arm quick, is a major doubt for Pakistan ahead of the second Test against South Africa. He took a tumble a few days ago and the wounds on his thigh are still healing so he may not be considered for selection. At the pre-match press conference, Pakistan’s coach Dav Whatmore initially said Junaid was unavailable for the Cape Town Test. When pushed for confirmation he then revealed that Junaid will be fit for the third Test in Centurion. However, team manager Naved Cheema added to the confusion by saying Junaid has made progress and could be picked for the Newlands match. If Junaid is ruled out, a second spinner, the left-armer Abdur Rehman could make an appearance on what is expected to be a dry surface. What seems unlikely to depend on Junaid’s fitness is the fate of 7ft quick Mohammed Irfan, who is in line for a Test debut at Newlands after his seven wickets in the tour match against the Emerging Cape Cobras.South Africa have been preparing for the Irfan who Graeme Smith said will present them with a “unique challenge.” Jokes about Allan Donald standing on a cooler box to give the batsmen throw-downs are just wisecracks but Alviro Petersen confirmed that the team has done extensive technical analysis on Irfran. What they have also been studying is Pakistan’s batting technique. Sixteen of the 20 wickets in the first Test fell to catches behind the stumps, suggesting that Pakistan did not leave as well as they could have. Whatmore attributed that to insufficient time spent getting used to conditions, a common problem with modern fixture lists.”The longer you play here, the better you will get. The same applies when teams from here tour the sub-continent. They have got better because they tour there so often,” he said. Pakistan played one four-day match ahead of the first Test on an East London pitch that was completely dissimilar to the one they put on at the Wanderers. They have since had another game, of only two days despite the break between matches extending to 10, against the Emerging Cape Cobras. “We could have had more practice matches beforehand maybe but the schedule did not allow for it,” Whatmore said. While Pakistan attribute their first innings performance in Johannesburg on adjustment, Smith chose to credit the South African attack for who testing the opposition technique and showing it up. “I’d like to put it down to our guys getting good swing. They also allowed us to bowl at them and we managed to control the run rate,” he said.Conditions at Newlands may not allow for the same approach. On a surface that will offer less the quicks than the Wanderers, Pakistan may find it a little easier to judge their off stump. But Smith hopes that will work in South Africa’s favour too. “If you come into the game with the mindset to leave, you are going to be tentative,” he said. For that reason, Whamore has spent the last ten days concentrating on helping the batsmen understand the choices they will have to make in this match. “Shot selection is the main thing with any batsman,” he said. “If you make 90 or 100 correct decisions in an innings, you are going to score a lot of runs.”Nasir Jamshed was the player Whatmore was most disappointed in after the Wanderers. After playing himself into a position to get his maiden Test half-century, Jamshed pulled a short ball straight at mid-on when he could so easily have played a different shot.Whatmore singled out the young opener because he showed he had the potential to get the better of the opposition bowlers for a period of time and then caused his own downfall. Jamshed did not get the opportunity to practice rectifying that in a match situation because he turned his ankle before game against the Emerging Cape Cobras but it has healed in the lead up to his Test. That will come as some good news for Pakistan, who have been hit by a spate of injuries and illnesses on this tour. Taufeeq Umar and Haris Sohail were sent home before the first and second Tests respectively, Asad Shafiq almost missed the first Test with a hand injury, wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed was hit on the nose and Mohammed Hafeez had a viral infection.Sarfraz and Hafeez have both been cleared to play in the second Test which means Pakistan avoid the need for wholesale changes. It will be down to the same top order to make amends.

'One of the toughest tours I've played in' – Mir

All through the last week, Sana Mir hadn’t been her usual, jovial self. One could sense that the Pakistan captain was feeling a bit insecure

Sana Mir: “Obviously it would have been good if we finished on a high note but still I am happy with the way the batters stood up today”•ICC

All through the last week, Sana Mir hadn’t been her usual, jovial self. One could sense that the Pakistan captain was feeling a bit insecure. Her team’s failures in the Women’s World Cup, combined with the political drama that threatened Pakistan’s participation in the marquee event seemed to be taking its toll. When Mir walked in to the enclosure after Pakistan’s loss to India in the seventh place play-off in what was to be her last media appearance, she was looking relaxed for a change. The smile was back, by her own admission, due to curtains falling over what was a “tense” tour.”Yes [I am relieved]. I can say that now because it was one of the toughest tours I have ever played in. Everything – like my own performance, my team’s performance and the whole situation – it was one of the toughest tournaments,” Mir said.”It’s[a] mixed [feeling]. It has been tough. But we have seen a lot of people supporting us, especially all the people at the Orissa Cricket Association (OCA) Academy and the OCA staff in the dressing room. They all have helped us a lot. Overall, it was a tense tournament for the Pakistan team but still we managed to do it and for some reason it’s good that we are going home now.”Nothing had gone Pakistan’s way during their two weeks’ stay in Cuttack. They were confined to the Barabati Stadium due to security reasons. They lost one of their warm-up games against an OCA XI. And most importantly, their batting failures resulted in three successive comprehensive defeats in the league stage. Against India, their batsmen fared better by posting 192, but it wasn’t enough.”Obviously it would have been good if we finished on a high note but still I am happy with the way the batters stood up today because they were under a lot of pressure. I think putting [up] a good score on the board against the Indian side must give them some positives and they can work harder for the next [assignment],” Mir said. After such a poor run, it would have been hard for any team to take the field for a match to determine the last place. But the fact that Pakistan were up against arch rivals India made it easier for Mir and the coaching staff. “I would say that as it was against India, I didn’t have to motivate any player. Had it been against any other team, I would have had to lift the girls a lot.”They always look forward to playing against India, because we don’t get to play too many games against them. They were motivated and they showed it in the ground today,” Mir said.Mir drew positives in the “bowlers’ performances”, and also hoped for more international matches against better teams in future. “I think we have arranged for some tournaments in June and I hope before that we will get to play some matches. We have got two one-dayers and two T20s with England and then Ireland before we play the World T20 qualifiers. But we would like to have some more T20 internationals before we go to the qualifiers,” she said.

Sri Lanka thrown to the lions

Australia completed a fearful mauling of Sri Lanka in the Boxing Day Test, winning by an innings and 201 runs

The Report by Daniel Brettig at the MCG28-Dec-2012

In his summary of the 1974-75 Ashes series, Wisden’s correspondent John Thicknesse wrote of the havoc wrought by Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson that “England’s batsmen must have experienced the same sort of emotion as they waited for the next ball as early Christians felt as they waited in the Colosseum for the lions.”Sri Lanka’s batsmen were wracked by that same feeling of helplessness and inevitability as Australia completed a fearful mauling of the tourists in the Boxing Day Test, as the incisiveness of the home bowling attack combined with a dreadful glut of injuries to have the match over by 2.10pm on the third afternoon. The fall of Sri Lanka’s seventh wicket, fittingly to a short-pitched ball, meant the end of the contest, as none of Prasanna Jayawardene, Chanaka Welegedara or Kumar Sangakkara were fit to bat.Sangakkara had suffered a suspected finger fracture at the hands of the man of the match Mitchell Johnson, who began the day by guiding Australia’s tail to a lead of 304 and ended it as the chief inflictor of pain on a Sri Lankan team that was overwhelmed even more comprehensively than India had been last year.Australia’s victory was a reward for a consistently diligent and aggressive pursuit of victory, though it was hard to define how well they had played given the collective weakness of their opponents, who had clearly thrown their best and only punch in Hobart. Nonetheless it was a triumphant way for Michael Clarke’s team to conclude the year, even if they had their own injury worry in the shape of Shane Watson’s problematic calf. The destruction of Sri Lanka’s innings began in the first over. Dimuth Karunaratne was farcically run out after taking his team’s first run, and next ball Tillakaratne Dilshan squeezed a Johnson short ball to short leg. Jackson Bird again made a striking impression, deceiving Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera with his immaculate line and a little movement in either direction.Bird and Nathan Lyon had failed to keep Johnson company for long enough to allow the left-hander his second Test hundred after a rasping effort in Cape Town in 2009, but this was to seem of little consequence once the Sri Lankans began batting.Lyon’s intention when play resumed had to be to hang around while Johnson pushed towards his second Test century. However his actions did not match the goal, as after taking a single to get off a duck he was late on a pull shot at Angelo Mathews and lobbed the simplest of catches to midwicket. That left Johnson with the company of only the last man Bird, who with a first-class batting average of 8.22 was certainly entitled to his station beneath Lyon in the order. Needing another 17 runs when Bird walked tot he middle, Johnson set about the task with good sense, pinching singles here and there while also driving Mathews sweetly down the ground. He had made it as far as 92 when Bird faced up to Shaminda Eranga, who delivered a ball that was fast, full and more or less wasted on the batsman, who was comically late as the ball crashed into middle and off stumps. Johnson accepted a gesture of consolation from Bird before jogging off the field, assuming his next task of taking the new ball in the second innings.Johnson did not have long to wait for a celebration, Karaunaratne pushing into the offside third ball of the innings and setting off fatally for a second run as David Warner fielded and threw sharply back to the bowler, whose dive to break the stumps beat Karunaratne comfortably. Dilshan’s first ball was short, fast and at the batsman’s armpit, forcing a self-preervative stroke that lopped off glove and thigh for Ed Cowan to run back and catch – 2 for 1.Jayawardene’s decline as an international batsman on foreign shores has been dispiriting for those who have witnessed his best, and here he was defeated by Bird’s line, unsure whether to play or leave and withdrawing his bat too late to avoid a wretched inside edge onto the stumps.Samaraweera played Bird uncertainly from the crease, and when the bowler seamed one back at him was pinned in front for a clear LBW, the batsman’s DRS referral made more out of desperation than calculation. Replays duly showed the ball striking leg stump, leaving Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews to limp to the interval. Not long after lunch, Sangakkara winced when fending a Johnson delivery off the glove and shook his head forlornly when the team physio examined the damage. He left the field to become the third Sri Lankan sent to hospital during the match, and the remainder of the innings was not to be long in returning to the dressing room.Mathews dragged an attempted pull shot onto the stumps, Dhammika Prasad followed two consecutive sixes off the bowling of Lyon by skying a vain attempt at a third, and Eranga was cornered by a short-pitcher from Peter Siddle and plopped a catch to Ed Cowan at short leg. The innings had felt as much blood sport as Test match, and like the 1974-75 Englishmen, Sri Lanka were much the bloodier.

Pedro Smania: Nós criamos a avaliação 360 graus.

A geração Igor Gomes é 99.

Me dói até hoje.

Twin delight for Powell

Kieran Powell became the first West Indies batsman to hit two hundreds in a Test since Brian Lara in 2001

Kieran Powell believes West Indies are in a position to push for a win on the final day•AFP

On the fourth day of the Dhaka Test, Kieran Powell became the first West Indies batsman to score hundreds in each innings of a Test since Brian Lara achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in Colombo 11 years ago. The only other West Indies opener to hit twin Test centuries is Gordon Greenidge in 1976, but Powell was more concerned about what awaits his team on the fifth day than in history.Powell wasn’t even aware of who he stood a chance of emulating with his 117 and 110, saying he was reminded by a member of the support staff the night before. “Last night I was speaking to my massage therapist and he told me that this is perfect opportunity to do something like this,” Powell said. “I am not too sure how often it happened but I am happy that it happened to me.”After fielding for a day and a half, Powell’s second-innings century has been a reflection of his marked improvement as a batsman in the past year. He has now scored three centuries this year, solidifying his position in the Test side. Even in the space of two innings, Powell has showed the maturity that has escaped many West Indies openers when batting in the subcontinent. He adjusted perfectly to the match situation and the pitch, playing a lot straighter in the second innings while he had played all around the wicket in the first innings. He was however part of the reason West Indies are in a position of weakness as they slipped from 212 for 3 to 244 for 6 at stumps. Powell was the fourth wicket to fall when he misjudged a straighter delivery from Shakib Al Hasan, exposing two new batsmen. That too in the absence of the experienced Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who was ill and resting at the team hotel on the fourth day.West Indies are 215 ahead with four wickets in hand, which Powell felt was a score from which they could push for a win. “I think we are still in a good position. I think once we get to 300 tomorrow we should be in a good position to look for a win or even trying to save the game.”All we need to do tomorrow is to bat through the first session. Once we do that we should be in a safe position and then push forward from there. I think we have enough time considering the [state of the] wicket.”
