The South African franchises will play between two and four rounds of first-class cricket before the national team’s tour to Australia in November. Graeme Smith’s team will play three Tests on the tour and a single tour match, starting on November 2, while South Africa’s domestic season will start seven weeks before that on September 20.The Knights, Cobras, Dolphins and Warriors will each play four matches before the Australia tour while the Lions and Titans will only play two games, because of their involvement in October’s Champions League T20.”With the early start to the season our two representatives in the Champions League T20 will be able to find form ahead of this important inter-continental competition,” Jacques Faul, CSA’s acting chief executive, said. “They will be without those national players involved in the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka.”The Champions League, which runs from October 13 to 28, will not interrupt the domestic fixtures greatly, as the four franchises not involved will continue playing as normal. Their matches will all be hosted at grounds not involved in the competition, such as Buffalo Park in East London and the Pietermaritzburg Oval. All the competitions – first-class, one-day and twenty-overs – will be played over a double round. Each franchise will play ten matches, half at home and half away, in keeping with the changes that were made in the 2011-12 season. The limited-overs competition will involve a knockout stage that will see the team who tops the table automatically qualify for the final, while the second and third placed teams will contest a playoff.Although the formats will stay the same, the names of all three competitions will change because CSA have found new sponsors after being abandoned by most of their corporate partners due to the ongoing bonus scandal. The first-class competition is no longer backed by broadcaster SuperSport but funded by cooking oil manufacturing company Sunfoil, who are also Test sponsors. The one-day cup, which went unsponsored last season, now has the muscle of financial services company Momentum behind it.The twenty-over competition’s naming rights have not yet been claimed. Insurance company MiWay stepped in at the 11th hour last season, but have not announced a renewal of their sponsorship. A certainty about the tournament is that the composite seventh franchise, Impi, have been disbanded and the event will be played between the six existing teams, with no additions.

Scotland move WCL matches due to flooding

Scotland’s two ICC World Cricket League (WCL) fixtures against Canada have been moved to Ayr Cricket Club

ESPNcricinfo staff08-Jul-2012Scotland’s two ICC World Cricket League (WCL) fixtures against Canada have been moved to Ayr Cricket Club after the Citylets Grange in Edinburgh was declared unplayable. The original venue was flooded when the nearby river, the Water of Leith, burst its banks following recent heavy rainfall. However, despite the switch the first WCL match, which had already been delayed until the reserve day on Tuesday as the ground at Ayr needed preparing, was cancelled on Monday afternoon leaving one fixture set to be played on Wednesday weather permitting. The request was made to the ICC on Sunday, with both teams agreeing to the final decision on the switch. Earlier in the week, Scotland and Canada lost all four days of their Intercontinental Cup match due to an unplayable pitch at Bothwell Castle, Uddingston.Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive, said: ”Every effort is being made by the ICC, Cricket Scotland and the teams to play these vital games. The weather that has hit Scotland in recent weeks is unprecedented and has given all our clubs major problems.”We are very grateful to Ayr CC for both agreeing to host the matches at a couple of days’ notice and now working so hard to get their ground ready for Tuesday.” July 9, 17.30pm. Television replays caused Sri Lanka's tampering concerns

Mahela Jayawardene has said it was the broadcaster’s choice of close-up replays that led Sri Lanka to raise concerns with the match referee that Australia’s players were allegedly tampering with the ball

Mahela Jayawardene has said it was the television broadcaster’s choice of close-up replays that led Sri Lanka’s team management to raise concerns with the match referee that Australia’s players were allegedly tampering with the ball in Hobart.Australia’s players were since absolved by Broad. In a statement issued after the Test, Broad said that match officials had reviewed the footage and monitored the state of the ball, and had not found any evidence to suggest the condition of the ball had been changed.Jayawardene said Sri Lanka’s management simply reacted to close-up footage of Siddle’s grip on the ball from the broadcaster. “[The ball tampering concerns] weren’t from our management,” he said. “It was something that was shown on television and that was it. We just wanted to make sure that the officials saw what we saw on television. We never made any official complaint about it. We just moved on. It’s up to the officials to see if anything happened and if so, take action. If not, move on.”For the TV guys to zoom in and stop, obviously they saw something funny. Otherwise, we had five days of Test cricket and nothing else was shown. It’s up to the officials to find out, even from the TV guys, to see whether there was something funny happening, and if that is the reason that they showed it. Otherwise they don’t have to show something like that on national television where millions of people are watching this match. That’s what prompted us to find out what was going on. Like I said, we don’t have any proof. We didn’t see it happen.”After the match, Siddle was adamant the footage had been misinterpreted. Siddle took 9 for 104 in the Test and was the Man of the Match. “I wake up in the morning, I thought today if I ran out there and ball-tampered in front of 15 cameras and a lot of people watching the game I will get away with it?” Siddle said. “That is a ridiculous statement. Why would I want to jeopardise that when I know we can go out there and do everything in the spirit of the game and win. That’s how we play and we always play. There’s nothing to it at all.”Australia captain Michael Clarke backed Siddle and emphasised his team’s commitment to playing fairly. “At the end of the day, the ICC have made it very clear there was nothing there,” Clarke said. “I 100% believe we always play in the spirit of the game. I don’t think any of the Australian players would ever jeopardise that or do anything to ruin our reputation. We play hard on the field but we understand there is a line you can’t cross and we play the right way.”Jayawardene also said Sri Lanka would be dismayed if the match officials had not at least raised the issue with the Australian team. Broad’s statement said he had spoken with Australia coach Mickey Arthur during the tea interval of day three, soon after the close-up shots of Siddle’s grip had caused concern in the Sri Lanka camp.”The easiest thing for them to have done is to at least have a chat with the Aussie management or the captain and see what happened,” Jayawardene said. “If they haven’t done that, we’d be a bit sad about it. That’s the minimum requirement. Everyone saw on television, what they zoomed in on. It’s not that just we saw something, it was on television.”When told that match officials had not found any evidence upon which to lay charges, Jayawardene said he was fine with their findings and was happy to move on. “The teams will fight it out there in the field – there’s no love lost in that. Off the field we are pretty good friends and the players can have an unofficial chat about it. It’s not that big a deal. I think they’ve got the talent to win matches without doing those kinds of things.”

Botha a 'natural-born leader' – Berry

South Australia’s coach Darren Berry has described the state’s new captain Johan Botha as a fierce, ruthless international competitor who will bring natural leadership qualities to the Redbacks

South Australia’s coach Darren Berry has described the state’s new captain Johan Botha as a fierce, ruthless international competitor who will bring natural leadership qualities to the Redbacks. Botha will be released from his Cricket South Africa contract after the ICC World Twenty20 in September and will take up a two-year contract to lead South Australia, replacing Michael Klinger as captain. The move was unexpected after Klinger in February led the Redbacks to their first one-day title in 25 years, but South Australia hope Botha will bring a fresh approach to a team that has won only one Sheffield Shield match in the past two seasons. Klinger said he was fully supportive of the move, which would allow him to focus solely on his batting.”I loved every minute of captaining South Australia but I think for the betterment of South Australian cricket this decision will definitely help us go forward,” Klinger told reporters in Adelaide. “He’s a fantastic person, a disciplined character, which I think will be great for our group, and he’s a very skilful cricketer. For him to come in and be part of the leadership group and captain our side will help us move forward.”Botha impressed the South Australian hierarchy with his on-field and off-field work for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League in December and January. He is regarded by Berry as the kind of man who can help the state’s younger cricketers develop while holding down his own place in all formats with his offspin and solid batting.”We worked with Botha during the Adelaide Strikers series and he had a really good impact on our playing group with his attitude and his leadership,” Berry told ESPNcricinfo. “We were trying to secure him for next year for the Adelaide Strikers and as his one-day career with South Africa has probably tailed off in the last six weeks or so, an opportunity has come up.”We feel that it was a wonderful opportunity to get someone of his experience and class to add to our mix. To come in and take the reins as captain as a pure outsider could be just the tonic to really help us improve and achieve what we want to in four-day cricket.”Botha has led South Africa in 10 ODIs and 11 Twenty20 internationals and his teams lost only five of those 21 matches. His role in the side is expected to vary depending on the availability of Nathan Lyon and his position will be more like that of the allrounder Aaron O’Brien, who has not been offered a South Australia contract for next summer after playing only two Shield games in 2011-12.”We don’t expect him to be a massive matchwinner for us, but what he is is a quality, ruthless international competitor,” Berry said of Botha. “He’s a jet in the field, he’s more than adequate and solid with the bat, which we need in our middle order. He’ll add some steel to our middle order, which constantly falls over. And his bowling will do a really serviceable job.”The other good thing about it, and this is why Botha is such a good leader and good person, he’s made it quite clear he will fit into the team wherever we need him to fit in. That means that whenever Nathan Lyon is available, there is no question that Nathan Lyon is the No.1 spinner and Botha will play as a batsman in those games and be the second spinner.””He’s a cool head under pressure, he’s a super-fierce competitor. He’s captained his [South African] franchise, the Warriors. We played against him in two Champions League matches and were really impressed by his tactical nous and his knowledge of the game is first-class. When you talk cricket with him he’s one of those natural-born leaders.”While Botha might take the position of a younger spinner like Cameron Williams, who made his first-class in February, Berry said the benefit the state’s younger slow bowlers would benefit significantly from working with Botha. During 2011-12, the Redbacks used several spinners – Williams played one Shield game, O’Brien played two, Cullen Bailey played three and Lyon played two.”We have some talented youngsters but they are a fair way off the mark,” Berry said. “He’ll be a good role model for them and almost like an on-the-job coach who will be able to assist them. We’re getting him to assist on the field with the development side of our young players. We might play one of our young spinners alongside him so that he can lead them on the field as well. That was part of the appeal, the impact he will have on the younger players.”Berry said Botha’s presence would be a major boost for the state’s leadership on-field and off-field, with the development of a leadership group part of his plan with the squad. And Berry stressed that Klinger had done nothing wrong to prompt the move to Botha.”What I’m trying to create is a culture of a core leadership group rather than what cricket has notoriously been about with the one sole figure-head,” he said. “At South Australia we need a group of leaders if we’re going to move forward. What did Klinger do wrong? Absolutely nothing. What we’d like Klinger to do is play cricket for Australia and continue to be a wonderful role model around our group, which he is. There was no issue with Klinger. It was just an opportunity to add an international captain to our mix.”

Steyn, Philander trigger dramatic slide

A catastrophic collapse – that surrendered five wickets with score stuck on 133 – swung the match emphatically in favour of South Africa, as they dismissed New Zealand for 185 on a rain-shortened day one in Hamilton

A catastrophic collapse – that surrendered five wickets with score stuck on 133 – swung the match emphatically in favour of South Africa, as they dismissed New Zealand for 185 on a rain-shortened day one in Hamilton. But the hosts also struck with ball, dismissing Graeme Smith and nightwatchman Dale Steyn before stumps, to leave South Africa at 27 for 2. The rain delay, which came early in the second session, allowed only 72.2 overs to be bowled in the day.New Zealand’s capitulation came after an 89-run stand between Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor, during which the hosts progressed steadily on a pitch that offered little to seam bowlers. Dale Steyn led the mid-innings assault, ambushing McCullum with a short ball and a deep square leg, before taking the shoulder of Kane Williamson’s bat with another sharp bouncer in the next over. Vernon Philander then charged through to flatten the middle order, felling Taylor, Daniel Vettori and Doug Bracewell in seven balls.McCullum had brought up his half-century with a six over vacant square leg, but did not shelve the stroke when Graeme Smith appointed a fielder in the deep, with South Africa having persisted with the short length for much of the innings. Having chided himself for attempting to pull a short Steyn delivery in the previous over, McCullum attempted the stroke again – this time to one that had risen well over his head, taking the top edge. If he was disappointed at once again having squandered a start, his mood can’t have been improved by the clatter of wickets that followed.Taylor drove at one that was too short for the stroke, giving Graeme Smith a simple catch at second slip. In the first innings of the first Test, too, he’d departed soon after McCullum, after the pair had got themselves in. Williamson, Vettori and Bracewell then strolled in and were all on their way out again, without having scored a run – Williamson was caught at slip, Vettori was bowled by one that nipped back and Bracewell edged behind. After having been a healthy 133 for 2 in the 49th over, New Zealand had plunged to an appalling 133 for 7 in the 52nd.Smart stats

From a position of 133 for 2, New Zealand lost five wickets on the same score. The aggregate of zero runs for wickets three through to seven is the joint-lowest in Tests. New Zealand, surprisingly, have the four lowest partnership aggregates in an innings for wickets three to seven.

Vernon Philander picked up his sixth haul of four wickets or more in just 11th innings. In the same period (since November 9, 2011), four players, including Dale Steyn, are joint-second on the list of bowlers with the most four-wicket hauls (4).

This is the 11th occasion that three or more New Zealand batsmen have scored ducks in an innings against South Africa.

Graeme Smith’s poor run against Chris Martin continued when he fell to the New Zealand fast bowler for the eighth time. No other bowler has dismissed Smith as many times.

There have been only two previous occasions (batting first) when New Zealand have won scoring lower than the 185 they made in their first innings. Their most recent such victory came in the Hobart Test against Australia.

Steyn, who has 41 wickets in seven Tests against New Zealand, is third on the list of South Africa bowlers with the most wickets against New Zealand behind Makhaya Ntini (46) and Shaun Pollock (43). However, Steyn’s average of 18.36 is the best among the top three bowlers.

Mark Gillespie and Kruger van Wyk played their shots following the slide, pushing their side quickly towards 200, but the pair could not maintain the resistance for long. Morne Morkel trapped van Wyk in front of the stumps, before Imran Tahir had Gillespie caught brilliantly by Alviro Petersen at midwicket. When Brent Arnel perished in Tahir’s following over, New Zealand had gifted South Africa a mountain of momentum and the chance to bat on a quickly flattening pitch. The pull stroke had been productive for McCullum before his demise, as South Africa seemed intent to attack via the short ball once the movement they’d anticipated at the toss failed to materialise past the first hour. He had been floored by Steyn earlier in the day, but held firm against the bounce thereafter – he blunted the bounce off the back foot when it rose to his chest, and picked up singles through a sparse on-side field when the ball was pitched slightly fuller.Taylor favoured the cut meanwhile, climbing over the ball to hit it square, while also scoring straight when the change-up was delivered. Two commanding drives off Philander in the first over of a rain-curtailed second session betrayed the friendliness of the surface, as well as Taylor’s own good form, as he and McCullum rebuilt steadily following the loss of the openers. The pair resumed in a similar vein following the weather interruption, and were rarely flustered by South Africa in the hour after the break, but both then fell in quick succession to leave the hosts tottering. South Africa then pounced to expose a long New Zealand tail.Kruger van Wyk had to wait until his second match to bag his first dismissal, but when the chance came, his reactions were spectacular. Wrong footed by Smith who went for a booming cover drive to a wide Chris Martin delivery, van Wyk changed direction and dived low to his right to snaffle the inside edge, centimetres from the turf. van Wyk and Martin combined again to dismiss Steyn, and though South Africa’s middle order will relish the prospect of batting on the flat surface on day two, the double-strike will keep New Zealand in the match – if only just.
