Kapil Lord's debut silences Strauss

Just as he was really getting started, Andrew Strauss was abruptly stopped as Worcestershire’s Aneesh Kapil had a debut to be reckoned with

It was a stop-start day in north London. Just as he was really getting started, Andrew Strauss was abruptly stopped. In overcast conditions that three times interrupted proceedings before bringing about an early close, Strauss played a bright and breezy innings, riding his luck until the point where he appeared to have rediscovered some missing vim, only to fall to the second ball delivered by Worcestershire’s England U-19 allrounder Aneesh Kapil.Kapil was making his first appearance at Lord’s so dismissing the England captain was quite a way to celebrate. Strauss played around a straight one – pretty much the only straight one in Kapil’s opening over as he struggled with the slope – and shortly afterwards the players went off for bad light and an early lunch. If that was hard luck on Strauss, then he had already used up a chunk of fortune in the first half-hour, when he played and missed, grafted and poked, and generally looked so out of nick that the only positive was that he did not actually get out.On two occasions edges failed to carry and he was also aided by a drop at third slip when he had made 5 only to settle and thereafter display some of the positive strokeplay either side of the wicket that is the mark of his batting at its best.Twice he cut Jones hard to the square boundary and, having hooked Richardson into the Grand Stand, looked well set to capitalise on his early reprieve. In fact, he might have reached 50 had his opening partner Sam Robson been quicker between the wickets. Strauss wanted three after a clip off his legs and could be seen gesturing as much to Robson, whose turning rather resembled an MCC member who had forgotten to make his order at the bar. Instead, it was Robson who saw out the next over, a maiden, and Strauss who fell lbw for 49 to Kapil’s medium pace.”It was a great honour to get out the England captain in my first over at Lord’s,” Kapil said. “I didn’t bowl as well as I could after that but I need to make sure I’m back on it tomorrow. I didn’t realise how big the slope actually was. People always talk about the slope and it’s the first time I’ve actually experienced it. It’s quite a big difference.”Kapil, who regards himself as a batsman who bowls, has impressed for Worcestershire since returning from England U-19s duty in Australia and he might one day get the opportunity to master the slope in an England shirt. At 18, he seems eager to prove himself. “Impossible is nothing,” was his response to being asked whether a result was still achievable, after a day and a half was lost to inclement weather and poor light, although that may have betrayed his youthful exposure to marketing as much as a attitude.Following Thursday’s wash out, conditions didn’t augur much better for Strauss’ third knock of the season, as Worcestershire predictably chose to bowl under grubby, cotton-wool clouds. Chris Rogers may have temporarily replaced Neil Dexter as Middlesex captain but he maintained their losing run at the toss and for the fourth time in four matches they were inserted. The expected tumble of wickets did not ensue, however, despite the tight lines initially bowled by Alan Richardson, the Middlesex old boy, and David Lucas. After a cautious start, in which they scored 16 runs from the first eight overs, with one boundary, Strauss and Robson soon found that this pitch had no anti-establishment leanings and proceeded to pull, cut and drive with alacrity. Michael Klinger was guilty of failing to cling on to a Strauss edge off Richardson – a sharp but catchable chance – and the pair went on to record Middlesex’s first 50-run opening stand of the season, before Kapil struck in the 21st over.A three-hour delay then ensued, during which a brief shower augmented the poor light, but when they got back on Robson sped to his half-century in a flurry of blows, taking just 11 balls to go from 29 to 50. Middlesex added 34 in 5.1 overs before another short interruption and then just as he and Joe Denly began to look increasingly comfortable, Robson got one that bounced and left him from Richardson and this time Klinger lived up to his name. Denly displayed some sweet timing, particularly driving down the ground, but after a length ball reared at him out of the gloom, the batsmen were offered the light one final time.Worcestershire’s most recent visit to Lord’s came during their promotion charge of 2010, in which they won three of their last four matches to gazump Glamorgan for second spot. On that occasion, they dismissed Middlesex for 66 on the final day to complete an unlikely 111-run victory. It might require a similarly remarkable feat for them to pick up their first win of the season here.

Botha a 'natural-born leader' – Berry

South Australia’s coach Darren Berry has described the state’s new captain Johan Botha as a fierce, ruthless international competitor who will bring natural leadership qualities to the Redbacks

South Australia’s coach Darren Berry has described the state’s new captain Johan Botha as a fierce, ruthless international competitor who will bring natural leadership qualities to the Redbacks. Botha will be released from his Cricket South Africa contract after the ICC World Twenty20 in September and will take up a two-year contract to lead South Australia, replacing Michael Klinger as captain. The move was unexpected after Klinger in February led the Redbacks to their first one-day title in 25 years, but South Australia hope Botha will bring a fresh approach to a team that has won only one Sheffield Shield match in the past two seasons. Klinger said he was fully supportive of the move, which would allow him to focus solely on his batting.”I loved every minute of captaining South Australia but I think for the betterment of South Australian cricket this decision will definitely help us go forward,” Klinger told reporters in Adelaide. “He’s a fantastic person, a disciplined character, which I think will be great for our group, and he’s a very skilful cricketer. For him to come in and be part of the leadership group and captain our side will help us move forward.”Botha impressed the South Australian hierarchy with his on-field and off-field work for the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League in December and January. He is regarded by Berry as the kind of man who can help the state’s younger cricketers develop while holding down his own place in all formats with his offspin and solid batting.”We worked with Botha during the Adelaide Strikers series and he had a really good impact on our playing group with his attitude and his leadership,” Berry told ESPNcricinfo. “We were trying to secure him for next year for the Adelaide Strikers and as his one-day career with South Africa has probably tailed off in the last six weeks or so, an opportunity has come up.”We feel that it was a wonderful opportunity to get someone of his experience and class to add to our mix. To come in and take the reins as captain as a pure outsider could be just the tonic to really help us improve and achieve what we want to in four-day cricket.”Botha has led South Africa in 10 ODIs and 11 Twenty20 internationals and his teams lost only five of those 21 matches. His role in the side is expected to vary depending on the availability of Nathan Lyon and his position will be more like that of the allrounder Aaron O’Brien, who has not been offered a South Australia contract for next summer after playing only two Shield games in 2011-12.”We don’t expect him to be a massive matchwinner for us, but what he is is a quality, ruthless international competitor,” Berry said of Botha. “He’s a jet in the field, he’s more than adequate and solid with the bat, which we need in our middle order. He’ll add some steel to our middle order, which constantly falls over. And his bowling will do a really serviceable job.”The other good thing about it, and this is why Botha is such a good leader and good person, he’s made it quite clear he will fit into the team wherever we need him to fit in. That means that whenever Nathan Lyon is available, there is no question that Nathan Lyon is the No.1 spinner and Botha will play as a batsman in those games and be the second spinner.””He’s a cool head under pressure, he’s a super-fierce competitor. He’s captained his [South African] franchise, the Warriors. We played against him in two Champions League matches and were really impressed by his tactical nous and his knowledge of the game is first-class. When you talk cricket with him he’s one of those natural-born leaders.”While Botha might take the position of a younger spinner like Cameron Williams, who made his first-class in February, Berry said the benefit the state’s younger slow bowlers would benefit significantly from working with Botha. During 2011-12, the Redbacks used several spinners – Williams played one Shield game, O’Brien played two, Cullen Bailey played three and Lyon played two.”We have some talented youngsters but they are a fair way off the mark,” Berry said. “He’ll be a good role model for them and almost like an on-the-job coach who will be able to assist them. We’re getting him to assist on the field with the development side of our young players. We might play one of our young spinners alongside him so that he can lead them on the field as well. That was part of the appeal, the impact he will have on the younger players.”Berry said Botha’s presence would be a major boost for the state’s leadership on-field and off-field, with the development of a leadership group part of his plan with the squad. And Berry stressed that Klinger had done nothing wrong to prompt the move to Botha.”What I’m trying to create is a culture of a core leadership group rather than what cricket has notoriously been about with the one sole figure-head,” he said. “At South Australia we need a group of leaders if we’re going to move forward. What did Klinger do wrong? Absolutely nothing. What we’d like Klinger to do is play cricket for Australia and continue to be a wonderful role model around our group, which he is. There was no issue with Klinger. It was just an opportunity to add an international captain to our mix.”

Bell dropped from limited-overs squads

Jos Buttler and Danny Briggs have been named in England’s limited-overs squads to face Pakistan in the UAE

Jos Buttler and Danny Briggs have been named in England’s limited-overs squads to face Pakistan in the UAE. The pair, both of whom are uncapped in ODI cricket, have been included in the squad that will play four ODIs and three Twenty20 internationals.Ian Bell, however, was omitted from the squad. Bell had passed 50 only once in his last 14 ODI innings and had looked uncomfortable against Saeed Ajmal’s spin in the recently concluded Test series. It is entirely possible that Bell, aged 29 and a veteran of 108 ODIs, has played his last limited-overs match for England.Buttler, a 21-year-old from Somerset, has been in good form recently for England Lions. He struck two centuries and a half-century in his last five innings against Sri Lanka A, including one century from just 56 deliveries. He broke into England’s Twenty20 side towards the end of the English season after impressing in several important games – notably the CB40 final and the FPt20 quarter-final. He is seen as having the big-match temperament and the big-hitting game to prove a destructive ODI player. He can also keep wicket.Briggs, a 20-year-old left-arm spinner from Hampshire, is one of three spinners in the 16-man squad. A bowler who relies more on control than any extravagant turn, England hope Briggs proves well-suited to the slow, low pitches anticipated in the UAE.Tim Bresnan, who has just rejoined the England squad, having earlier returned to England for further treatment on an elbow injury that required surgery at the start of December, is also included subject to further fitness tests.Nottinghamshire batsman Alex Hales will join the squad for the Twenty20 leg of the tour, with Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott returning to England. Stuart Broad is the captain of England’s Twenty20 side that will be looking to retain their World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka in September.Squads

ODIs: Alastair Cook (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott
Twenty20s: Stuart Broad (capt), James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Ravi Bopara, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Alex Hales, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Eoin Morgan, Samit Patel, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann

England’s National Selector, Geoff Miller, said: “We have selected two squads that include both experienced international players and younger players who have performed strongly for England Lions in recent months and deserve an opportunity to further test themselves against quality opposition. Playing against Pakistan in the UAE will be challenging but it is important that these players continue to develop their skills so that we are able to make strides in limited-overs cricket particularly on the subcontinent.”England have a mixed ODI record. While their home form remains impressive – they won series against both World Cup finalists, India and Sri Lanka, at home in 2011 – their away form is grim. They lost all five matches against India in October and 14 of their last 20 outside England. They have won just five and tied the other.Their record in Asia is even more gruesome. Since December 12, 2005, England have won just 12 of 38 ODIs in Asia and four of those victories came against Bangladesh and the Netherlands. Pakistan, by contrast, have won 12 of their last 13 ODIs and 23 of their last 30. England, however, have won five of the last seven ODI meetings between the sides. In a bid to improve the tempo of England’s batting, Kevin Pietersen will be given another opportunity to open the innings, with Craig Kieswetter dropping down to bat at No. 5. While England hope Pietersen can exploit the powerplay overs, after a brief experiment at the World Cup before his injury, Kieswetter is also seen as an accomplished hitter of the older, softer ball. Both may require productive series to silence their critics.Kieswetter has only passed 50 once in his last 24 ODIs, while Pietersen has not made a score of 80 or more since November 2008.Indeed, in that period, he has only passed 50 three times in 34 innings. But England have invested a lot of time in both of them and would be loathe to change tactics now.England will warm-up for the series by taking on England Lions on Friday, before the ODI series begins in Abu Dhabi on February 13.

Ele deve voltar a dicar à disposição neste domingo, contra a Chapecoense.

Darren Sammy opts out of Bangladesh Premier League

Darren Sammy, the West Indies and Windward Islands captain, has opted out of the Bangladesh Premier League

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jan-2012

Darren Sammy isn’t playing the BPL because he wants to play first-class cricket for Windward Islands•Randy Brooks/West Indies Cricket Board

Darren Sammy, the West Indies and Windward Islands captain, has opted out of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) so that he can play in the domestic regional four-day competition and prepare for the upcoming home series against Australia in March. Sammy was bought by Sylhet Royals for $55,000 at the player auction in Dhaka on February 20.”While I enjoyed playing cricket in front the enthusiastic and passionate Bangladeshi fans, the BPL’s schedule clashes with that of the West Indies Cricket Board’s Regional 4-Day Tournament. Participating in the BPL would mean missing the first four rounds of the Regional 4-Day,” Sammy said in a statement. “West Indies will host Australia starting mid-March and it will be a tough and challenging series. I have decided that it would be best for me to participate in the Regional 4-Day in order that I am properly and fully prepared for the challenges of the series against Australia.”Additionally, Windward Islands cricket is blossoming and making significant strides and we are playing consistently well. My contributions as captain and allrounder are integral to this process and I am keen on serving my team as we continue to grow. I look forward to playing before the Bangladesh fans in the future at a time which is mutually convenient.”Dwayne Bravo, Jerome Taylor, Kevon Cooper, Lendl Simmons, Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Dwayne Smith, Fidel Edwards, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle were the other players from the West Indies bought at the BPL auction.
