He'd revive Gordon: Newcastle could hire Howe 2.0 in "the best coach in PL"

Eddie Howe deserves a statue outside St. James’ Park. After all, he has been the purveyor of a new order at Newcastle United and has been described as “one of the best managers out there” by his assistant coach Jason Tindall.

But Newcastle are in a rut. To say the wheels have come off would be a step too far, but the turbulence of the summer transfer window has put a spoke in the club’s wheels all the same, with United down in 14th place in the Premier League, three away defeats on the bounce and without a win on the road all season in the league.

The word from those connected to PIF, as per The Athletic, is that Howe’s job is under no immediate threat, but there’s an acceptance that results and performances have been well below expectations, and that needs to change.

The likes of Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga are struggling down the flanks, and the problems on the tactical front can be found across all areas of the field. This is a big concern and needs rectifying quickly.

Talk of Howe’s dismissal is premature, but it has raised the question as to who could succeed the English coach if the Magpies fail to fly out of the hole they have fallen into.

Why Newcastle could consider Howe's future

Howe arrived at St. James’ Park shortly after the epoch-shaping PIF takeover, to say the club have gone from strength to strength since would be quite the understatement.

Two Champions League qualifications in three years and triumph in the Carabao Cup last season have immortalised this man, but he won’t be at the helm forever, with recent results and performances indicative of deeper issues than a mere skid of form.

Particularly, the Toon have lacked confidence and coherence on the road, having won only once away from home all season – a 4-0 win over Union Saint-Gilloise in the Champions League.

If the almost unthinkable event of Howe’s departure were to come to pass, newly-appointed technical director Ross Wilson may well set his sights on Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, who has been riding the crest of a wave on the English south coast these past few years.

According to The Mirror, the Spanish tactician is among the most likely candidates for the Newcastle hot seat, should a decision be made on Howe’s future in the coming months, should improvements not be found in the matches ahead.

But given former Barcelona boss Xavi and Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, who won last season’s FA Cup, are also named, what is it about Iraola that demands such respect? Why, indeed, would he be the perfect manager to replace Howe at the helm?

What Andoni Iraola would offer Newcastle

Iraola was given the keys at Bournemouth at the end of the 2022/23 campaign. Gary O’Neil had done good work at the Vitality Stadium, keeping the Cherries in the Premier League after their promotion, but Iraola’s progressive and exciting style was viewed as the perfect fit for an ambitious outfit.

Bournemouth haven’t looked back. The 2023/24 season was one of stability, Iraola sticking his roots into the soil, but last year he made proper headway and garnered respect for his tactical acumen, matching Howe’s record ninth-place finish (the difference being that Iraola finished with 56 points, whereas Howe collected only 46 during the 2016/17 term).

Journalist James Horncastle has gone as far as to hail the 43-year-old as being the “best coach in the Premier League” for his resourcefulness and shrewd coaching style. The sharp-minded manager labelled his vision as being one of “rock and roll”, with such intensity and fury sure to be facets that endear Iraola to the Newcastle fanbase, should he be appointed down the line.

Should Newcastle make this move, it might help someone like Gordon return to top form. The Three Lions star struggled last season and has slipped further down a slope this year, yet to score or assist in the Premier League, albeit with four goals and an assist from four matches in the Champions League.

This is a winger who considers himself to be among the top brass, a “nightmare for anyone” he comes up against, words straight from the horse’s mouth. So much more is needed.

Iraola could be the man to rekindle the 24-year-old’s finest form, with his high-pressure and high-speed attacking plan something that could work a treat for a pacy player like Gordon. After all, just look at the gains Antoine Semenyo has made at Bournemouth over the past few years.

Gordon could match him, eclipse him. Even so horribly out of sorts in the Premier League, the £150k-per-week talent ranks among the top 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the Premier League for carries into the penalty area and the top 14% for successful take-ons per 90 (data via FBref).

For sure, this is the kind of electric pace and athletic application that Iraola loves from his wide attackers.

Of course, this comes with the huge caveat that Howe himself enforces a game built on effective transitional play, and Gordon is flattering to deceive in this system.

But maybe this is merely a life force reaching its end. Newcastle have achieved great things under Howe’s wing, but the boss will be defined by the stability he has created, able to pass the torch onto someone like Iraola.

AFC Bournemouth manager AndoniIraolalooks dejected after the match

Newcastle are not at the point where Howe’s future must be considered with a view toward a decision, but Newcastle have not been good enough this season, and if they fail to escape from the hole into which they have fallen, Iraola would be the perfect coach to lead them forward and into an exciting new chapter.

PIF must cash in on Newcastle "legend" who is becoming the new Sissoko

This Newcastle star appears to have gone past his sell-by date.

Big-money Berta signing could already be on borrowed time at Arsenal

After last season’s title challenge was derailed by injuries, Arsenal addressed this by recruiting heavily in the summer transfer window, and it’s just as well.

Piero Hincapié, Kai Havertz, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Jesus all missed Saturday’s win over West Ham, in which Martin Ødegaard suffered a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee, which is set to see him sidelined for around a month.

Meantime, William Saliba, Benjamin White, Bukayo Saka, Christian Nørgaard and others have already sat out matches due to more minor injuries this season, underlining the need for a gigantic squad.

Nevertheless, the fabled ‘when everyone is fit’ scenario could cause Mikel Arteta selection issues, forced to leave senior players out of a 20-man matchday squad entirely, so does one member of Arsenal’s current starting lineup need to up his game to avoid being evicted from the XI?

The latest on Arsenal's injury situation

This has been a rough year for the Gunners on the injury front. Bukayo Saka spent the early months of the campaign out while Gabriel also suffered a major hamstring injury towards the end of 2024/25.

Odegaard has also endured a tough time, picking up yet another problem at the weekend.

Safe to say his recent injury history is a cause for concern. At the weekend, he became the first player in history to be subbed in the first half of three consecutive Premier League matches

His best pal, Havertz, has also found life difficult this year.

After being widely mocked and ridiculed following his £65m move from Chelsea, the German flipped the script by scoring 14 goals during his first season in North London, before adding a further 15 last season.

However, in 2025 so far, the Germany international has seen just 817 minutes of action across all competitions, sitting out 29 matches, and counting.

First, Havertz underwent surgery in February after suffering a serious hamstring injury during the warm weather training camp in Dubai.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Then, on the opening day of this season, during his 30-minute cameo, the forward sustained a knee injury at Old Trafford, one that required a minor surgical procedure.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz

This occurred on 17 August, with Havertz forecast to be sidelined for between two and three months, which could see him back in the coming weeks, likely to be in contention by the time Arsenal face Tottenham, Bayern Munich and then Chelsea in the space of eight days at the end of November.

What Kai Havertz's return means for the Arsenal squad

In the meantime, not ready to return just yet, one current starter will be under pressure to improve his performances as a result.

Football supporters love nothing more than a debate, and just how well Viktor Gyökeres has done so far at Arsenal is the hot topic currently at the top of the agenda.

So far, the Swedish striker has scored three goals in ten appearances, bagging a brace against Leeds, as well as netting against Nottingham Forest, both in home games.

Well, ahead of his team’s World Cup qualifiers against Switzerland and Kosovo, Sweden manager Jon Dahl Tomasson believes the striker is in “very good form at the moment”, adding that those criticising him don’t “understand football”.

However, other opinions are widely available, with some asserting that he has so far struggled to make much of an impact, notably Gary Neville who said that he already looks like a bit of a “misfit” surrounded by the more technically gifted players at Arsenal.

The table certainly supports the zeitgeist that Gyökeres has made a mixed start to life at Arsenal.

As expected, he leads the way in terms of shots and goals, albeit he is underperforming his expected goals, having missed seven Opta-defined big chances, which goes alongside the eye-test that he almost certainly should’ve scored more goals.

Also, he is offering very little other than finishing, ranked bottom for touches per 90 of all Arsenal outfield players to have played 90 minutes or more this season, with a whopping 28% of his touches coming in the opposition penalty area.

Following Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United on the opening weekend, speaking on BBC 5 live, ex-Gunners defender Lee Dixon abelled the forward “vanilla”, struggling to make an impact or jell with team-mates, while Alan Pardew, talking on talkSPORT, stated he was “expecting a little bit more”.

During his time with Sporting in the Primeira Liga, one of the least-balanced leagues in Europe, Gyökeres was accused of being a flat track bully, scoring hat-tricks against Boavista twice, Farense, Estrela Amadora, Vitória de Guimarães and Moreirense, all non-elite teams, hence why many were concerned about his ability to make the step-up to Premier League level.

Well, coming up, Arsenal’s next four league opponents are Fulham, Crystal Palace, Burnley and then Sunderland which, while being stronger than most the Portuguese top-flight has to offer, is a favourable fixture list in which to build some momentum.

If Gyökeres does not significantly increase his goal tally in those matches, he could find himself back on the bench for the North London derby on 23 November, given that Havertz should be back by then. Safe to say he’s very much on borrowed time early into his Emirates Stadium career.

Arsenal's "future captain" is being given the Ramsdale treatment by Arteta

Recently, key figures for Mikel Arteta have quickly fallen out of favour, so is the same now happening to Arsenal’s “sensational talent”?

Rodgers says "excellent" under the radar Celtic star is impressing in training

Celtic were in action against Hibernian on Saturday, and one star caught the eye more than most for Brendan Rodgers on an occasion that ultimately ended in frustration.

Celtic have to settle for a point against Hibernian

Despite their best efforts, Celtic had to settle for a point at home to Hibernian on Saturday in a goalless draw mired by frustration due to their lack of potency in the final third.

Statistically, the Scottish Premiership holders racked up 26 shots and an Expected Goals tally of 3.00, per Fotmob. Nevertheless, some excellent stops from Raphael Sallinger and a host of missed chances meant a share of the spoils at Parkhead.

Opting not to criticise his players too much after a day where luck wasn’t on their side, Rodgers praised Celtic for their ‘dominant’ performance, also offering credit to Hibernian for their robust display. He stated via BBC Sport:

“I was happy with the performance. I think every metric in the game, we were dominant. I thought today our football was really good, we went through the pitch well but we just lacked that killer instinct in the box. But I also think they defended the box really well so we need to credit Hibs for that.”

Kelechi Iheanacho couldn’t convert his chances against Hibernian despite being heavily involved in attacking moves, while Arne Engels and Luke McCowan didn’t do enough to convince supporters they are worthy of a regular place in the engine room after rare starts.

Perspective is needed in light of the Hoops’ opportunity creation, but they are now two points behind Heart of Midlothian in the league standings as they now focus on facing Braga in the Europa League next Thursday.

Regardless, one Celtic performer did take his chance against Hibernian, earning praise from the manager after an impactful display on an otherwise forgettable afternoon.

Brendan Rodgers delighted with Celtic left-back Marcelo Saracchi

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rodgers made his appreciation known for loanee Marcelo Saracchi after his ‘excellent’ performance against Hibernian.

Detailing his consistency in training, he stated via The Daily Record: “Marcelo was excellent with his attitude to the game and his confidence. He’s an experienced player having played at a high level.

“Working with so many South American players, it’s an obligation, they’re not timid, they’re aggressive and strong and very committed and when we have the ball, he wants to play forward and come into those nice spaces.

“He’s made a really good impact coming into training. That attitude I like. You need that personality at a club like this. Some can be overawed, and you have to be patient, but he was excellent.”

Ultimately, Saracchi was a shining light for Celtic and proved his worth as an able deputy to Kieran Tierney, who is still working to reach full fitness after his summer move from Arsenal.

The Uruguay international has made an impressive start to life at the club and supporters will be excited to see more of the left-back in weeks to come.

Lionel Messi's Inter Miami 2.0: Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets' retirements suggest that MLS club may be ready to retool

With two stars leaving and Messi presumably staying, Miami can build a younger team around their main man – even if it they lose chemistry

It was a pretty dramatic video, all said. But it was a good one. The key moving moments were all there.

Jordi Alba looks up at a camera in slow motion (because things can never be done at full speed when you're trying to be dramatic). He walks towards the camera, does the thing where he looks around his stadium. Pictures flash up on the screen. We get videos of Alba, the academy kid; Alba, the Valencia misfit; Alba, the Barcelona star; Alba, the Inter Miami stalwart. There are pictures with his glut of football celebrity friends, coaches, and teammates: Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, Luis Enrique. The whole thing is played out in Spanish with English captioning. Alba thanks his clubs, his country, his family: 'This is yours, too.'

It ends in a perfect manner. Alba says and the screen fades to black.

Nicely done, Jordi. He's nailed the cliches here. And it's a little deserved slice of self-indulgence to end what was a wonderful career. But in the scope of this season, it simply begs a question:

It certainly appears that significant change is coming to Inter Miami. Alba has followed Busquets out the door in Miami. He, too, will leave South Florida – in a footballing capacity, at least – at the end of the season. The first retirement made sense – Busquets was slowing down on the pitch at 37. But Alba just signed a new contract and he's arguably played like the best left back in MLS's history this season, with five goals and 14 assists to his name. But instead, we're left with the Barca boys leaving Miami one by one. Luis Suarez may be next. And even if the rumors are true and Messi will stay, this feels like the end of an era. Messi's Miami 1.0 is coming to an end. Time for its new version to begin.

    A wonderful career

One former Inter Miami staffer used to call Alba "the little engine that could." And that's a fair summary of this all. His generation of Spanish players was littered with stars, who by divine right were going to play international soccer. It was not a question, for example, if Xavi would be a fully fledged international, but .

Alba wasn't like that. He had a significant physical issue. Alba never got his growth spurt. He was 5-7 as a teenager, and didn't get any taller. That made him positionally awkward. Blessed with the pace and trickery of most wingers, but a defender at heart, no one could quite figure out what to do with him. The early solution was to stick him at left wing and see what happens. In his early 20s, the national team seemed so, so far away – even if Spain had a glaring hole on the left side of defense.

Valencia unlocked him. Moving an attacking player into a defensive role was not a new concept at the time, but Alba seemed the perfect fit. He had the undeniable technical skill. But he also had the grit. There was a bite to him. He seemed to like to defend. Besides, Spain had already been captivated by a similar ilk of player with Brazilian fullback Dani Alves dominating on the right side of the pitch for Barcelona. Why couldn't Spain have their own version of that other wing with Alba?

Turns out, they could. Left back was his perfect spot. He got his move from Valencia to the club he supported as a kid, Barcelona, and it took off from there: La Liga titles, Champions Leagues, and Copas Del Rey. He became a stalwart for the national team, scored the winning goal in the Euro 2012 final, and captained La Roja on numerous occasions.

    Connection with Messi

It is a compliment of the highest order when Alba is referred to as Messi's running mate. This was, in effect, what kept Alba ticking over. Even as his defensive and athletic skills waned in his early 30s, Alba stayed relevant because he had an understanding with Messi like no other. You've seen the goal countless times. Messi drops into a central position and fires an angled ball into Alba's path on the left. The full back either pings it back first time for Messi to finish, takes a dribble, and then serves Messi to finish. Or, he dribbles forward a few yards, and then cuts back for Messi to finish. The two have connected for 33 goals over the course of their career. It's impossible to count how many times that move has been foiled, too.

Messi summed it up best on Alba's retirement post:

"It's crazy how many assists you've given me over all these years. Who is going to give me those passes from behind now?" he wrote.

This is just about as much emotion as Messi has ever shown.

Alba made the jump to Miami after it was clear Messi would. There were some doubts about his Barcelona future as early as 2022. But he stuck around.

Once Messi announced he was joining the MLS club on July 16, 2023, Busquets announced the same day and Alba did so four days later. The Blaugrana boys just to unite, and Alba completed the trio (Suarez, of course, would follow in December).

  • Getty Images Sport

    A surprise exit?

And now he is gone. It would not be an overstatement to say that this is a shock. Miami have been linked with former Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon for a while now – a deal that will now surely get over the line. But Alba signed a new contract 147 days ago. Back then, he seemed eager to keep playing:

"I’m happy to renew my contract because I have the desire to continue competing, and because of how I feel at the club, with the affection I receive from fans at every match,” Alba said at the time. “We have that desire to continue competing, to continue winning, and, hopefully, win as many titles as possible."

Those were not the words of a footballer eager to hang them up. The new deal, in fact, was set to keep him in Miami for two full seasons. It was, in effect, a sign that Messi, too, would stay. Alba is sticking around? Messi would surely follow.

Yet he left all the same. It is entirely possible, of course, that things have changed. Alba is 36. He will turn 37 right after next year's MLS season starts. Even after 28 matches at left back and left wing this year, his body may be giving up on him. These things happen to athletes, especially those who rely on running.

    Changing of the guard

A word on that Reguilon thing. He is nowhere near the caliber of football Alba is. But he is also 28 years old, more than good enough for MLS, and, crucially, a free agent. Sure, he will command a signing-on fee and a few trimmings here and there. But Reguilon is an absolute bargain who will no doubt make an impact at this level. Yes, it is peculiar that no one has picked him up since his Spurs contract expired on June 30. Perhaps it is possible that, in the small world of soccer, his pending Miami move was common knowledge. Why waste money on a footballer who was going to be elsewhere in six months, anyway?

He is also, more broadly, representative of a change. Look at Miami's decisions over the past few months, and everything seems geared up to a bit of a refresh. Busquets is soon to be gone, which is fairly unsurprising. Rodrigo De Paul's signing, completed three months ago, basically signalled that Busquets would leave at the end of the year. A little salary cap shifting here and there, and Miami might now have a bit more flexibility heading into the offseason.

If Suarez looks in the mirror, ponders his future, and realizes that he might be actively harming his body by playing soccer at this point, there might be even more wiggle room.

Arne Slot reveals why in-form Federico Chiesa has been left out of Liverpool squad for Champions League clash with Galatasaray

Liverpool boss Arne Slot revealed why star winger Federico Chiesa was left out of the Reds squad for their upcoming Champions League fixture against Galatasaray this week. The Italian displayed impressive performances in the club's last couple of matches. After starring with two assists in the win over Southampton, he scored the Reds' solitary goal against Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Chiesa's impressive run of form

Chiesa enjoyed an impressive run of form last week as he scored a goal and provided two assists for the Reds. He first starred with a couple of assists in the club's 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup and then scored the only goal for Liverpool in their 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Earlier on Monday, Liverpool announced a 21-member travelling squad to Turkey that will face Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday. While Slot named a star-studded roster, Chiesa was a notable absentee from the list of players.

Slot revealed why Chiesa was left out

Speaking to reporters, the Liverpool manager said: "He got a little niggle, I think it is the word you use here in England, in the last game against Palace. He tried it today, he was on the pitch in the beginning but he couldn't end the session, so we decided not to take him because in a few days it's Chelsea again."

The Gunners are seemingly determined to end the club’s two-decade-long wait for another Premier League title, and despite their need to offload surplus squad members right now, Arsenal could still sign Eze before the window closes.

They view the England international as a more potent playmaker in terms of goals, and who could complement club captain Martin Odegaard in a central role (Sky Sports).

Eze is Arsenal’s top target from now until the transfer deadline on September 1, and they’re expected to make a formal bid for the Palace star after holding extensive talks with his representatives.

The 27-year-old has also spoken directly to both Arteta and Berta about joining Arsenal, according to Ben Jacobs for talkSPORT, with some initial talks taking place with Palace as the north Londoners aim to get his signing done for around £55 million.

However, Eze may not be there only signing in the next few weeks, with Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet believed to be a target as well.

The promising Ligue 1 sensation only signed a new deal until 2029 in May, but some reports suggest Jacquet is increasingly tempted by the prospect of a move to Arsenal, with Fabrizio Romano also reporting that an approach has been made.

Jeremy Jacquet debating future with camp as Arsenal and Liverpool eye moves

According to journalist Graeme Bailey for TBR Football, Jacquet is holding talks with representatives over his future amid this contact from Arsenal, while it is also believed that Premier League champions Liverpool have registered an interest.

While Rennes insist that he’s not for sale, the 20-year-old is still speaking to his camp about what could be next for him, so Jacquet’s head may be turning amid this attention from England.

There is a feeling among the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool that he could still be attainable despite Rennes’ stance, with the idea of a ‘buy-to-loan’ type move, similar to how Arteta’s side got William Saliba from Saint-Etienne, not ruled out.

Even in that scenario, Rennes would keep Jacquet in France for at least another season, but Arteta would have to wait before fully integrating him into the squad.

His price tag is rumoured to be around £25 million, which could be a savvy investment for the future considering his already-glowing reputation across the channel.

Jacquet has been dubbed the “technical leader of his generation” by his former development coach at Rennes, Pierre-Emmanuel Bordeau, and football writer Phil Costa believes he’s “one of the best defensive prospects in France” in a similar mould to Ben White.
