Dominic Sibley has signed a contract extension with Warwickshre, committing to the club until the end of the 2022 season.Opening batsman Sibley earned a maiden call-up to England’s Test squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand off the back of an oustanding County Championship season in which he was the leading scorer with 1324 runs at an average of 69.68 and including five centuries.Paul Farbrace, who stepped down as England assistant coach this year to become sport director at Warwickshire, said he was delighted that Sibley had re-committed to the club.”He’s been the standout batsman in the 2019 County Championship and has proven that he doesn’t just have the ability to score hundreds but dominating hundreds, with double centuries recorded earlier this year versus Kent and Nottinghamshire,” Farbrace said.”We’re thrilled for Dom that he’s secured a place in England’s Test squad for the winter series with New Zealand, which is an excellent opportunity for him to cement a place in the team and to potentially enjoy a long career in the international game.”The 24-year-old Sibley, a unanimous pick as opener in ESPNcricinfo’s County Championship team of the seaon, joined the Bears on a three-year deal mid-way through the 2017 season from Surrey after finding limited opportunities at the top of the order. He has since formed a strong partnership with Will Rhodes – theirs was the most productive opening pairing in the 2019 Championship season at 1103 runs.”It’s been a good first few years at Edgbaston in many ways,” Sibley said. “I’ve settled well, relished the opportunities, made some firm friends and I’m really happy to be extending my commitment as a Bear.”It’s an exciting time for the club and, with so many young exciting players in the squad, we’re going to keep improving and hopefully success and trophies are just around the corner.”Warwickshire finished seventh in the Championship’s eight-team first division, avoiding relegation because only one team (Nottinghamshire) went down under a restructuring of the competition for next year, which will see 10 teams in the top flight and eight in Division Two.
With Delhi in trouble early, Shorey dodges almost all his paradoxes to produce a near masterclass but it wasn’t enough in the end
Hemant Brar in Bengaluru20-Oct-2019Dhruv Shorey’s career has been full of paradoxes. When he plays first-class cricket, his attractive strokeplay makes you think he will be better suited for 50-over cricket. When he bats in one-dayers, you wonder he’s probably going a tad slower. A List-A strike rate of 73 backs that observation.Shorey is supposed to be a mainstay of Delhi’s batting. He has a more than decent first-class record but averages in the low 30s in List A cricket with just one hundred from 42 games. At 27, Shorey’s career is yet to fully take off. Still he finds himself leading Delhi in the 2019-20 Vijay Hazare Trophy, and on Sunday, in the middle with his side at 17 for 2 against a rampant Gujarat in the second quarterfinal. What does Shorey do? He dodges almost all the paradoxes to produce a near masterclass.Chintan Gaja had just dismissed Delhi openers Shikhar Dhawan and Anuj Rawat, while Roosh Kalaria had kept things quiet from the other end. But Shorey not only stabilised the innings – along with Nitish Rana – but also accelerated towards the end to finish with a 109-ball 91.But just like his career, this innings too proved to be a paradox. He played a captain’s knock but failed to take his side to a winning total. In the end, Delhi were all out for 223 in 49 overs, and Gujarat chased the VJD-adjusted target of 225 in 37.5 overs with six wickets in hand.Earlier, Dhawan’s lean run with the bat continued. After failing to open his account in the first six balls, he skipped down the track to Gaja only to chip it towards short extra cover. But the fielder there spilled the straightforward chance, the sort of thing you hope for as an out-of-form batsman. But Dhawan failed to take any advantage of that. He sashayed down once again on the next ball, only to splice it towards mid-off this time. Piyush Chawla made no mistake. Four overs later, Rawat tried to do a similar thing and was taken at cover. With the side in trouble, Shorey and Rana decided to bid their time on a two-paced wicket. The team fifty came in the 14th over, and it took Delhi another 14 overs to reach the hundred-run mark. But Shorey batted with a calm demeanour, hitting mostly along the ground and reached his fifty in 67 balls. At the other end, Rana smashed two fours in one Arzan Nagwaswalla over but mostly found it difficult to get the ball off the square. Despite Rana’s struggles, the two had added 90 for the third wicket in 129 balls. It was once again Gaja who provided his side with a wicket. In an attempt to provide momentum to the innings, Rana ended up flicking one straight to short fine leg and was dismissed for 33 off 61.Shorey had moved to 77 off 98 without much fuss before he decided to take on Axar Patel. Using his feet, he lofted the left-arm spinner over wide long-off. Three balls later, when Axar pitched on short, Shorey got down on one knee to sweep-pull it for another six over fine leg. Suddenly, he was on 90 off 102 balls. With Himmat Singh for company, Shorey took Delhi to 150 in the 37th over, with the last 50 runs coming at almost run a ball. The platform was set, the hundred was there for the taking but then the paradox struck again. Or maybe it was just the nervous nineties. After all, last season he was dismissed thrice in the 90s in first-class cricket.Shorey had looked to play in the ‘V’ until then. But in the 38th over, while trying to steer Nagwaswalla towards third man, he ended up edging one to Parthiv Patel. Another unfulfilled promise as Shorey admitted after the match.”I should have stayed there till the end,” Shorey said. “Initially the wicket was doing a bit but after I got settled, it appeared a very good wicket to bat on. But the way I got out, or Nitish got out, it was a little disappointing. Maybe on this wicket, we could have gone on till the 45th over to pace our innings as anything around 270-280 or 300 would have been a good total.”A brief shower in the 40th over further disrupted Delhi’s momentum and when the teams returned – with the match reduced to 49 overs per side – the lower-order batsmen couldn’t do much against Chawla’s guile.Parthiv and Priyank Panchal then got Gujarat off to a quick start, with the former happily feasting on the buffet of short balls served by the Delhi seamers. Delhi’s fielding didn’t help their cause either. Panchal was on 28 when Rana dropped a sitter at mid-on, while wicketkeeper Rawat failed to grab an inside edge off Parthiv with the batsman on 57.The two added 150 in just 23.1 overs to make light work of the chase. Though Delhi struck back, by then there were not enough runs left to make a match out of it. Only if Shorey had stayed in there for a little longer, but that’s how his career has been so far.
Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side have enjoyed a brilliant spell in recent weeks, with the Gunners winning six Premier League games in a row, scoring 25 goals in the process.
The Gunners have been utterly dominant, with the club in a strong position to end their 20-year wait for a league title, sitting five points off leaders Liverpool – with their game in hand coming against Sheffield United on Monday evening.
Arsenal's winning run has seen the club impress at both ends of the pitch, also only conceding just three times in the process, keeping clean sheets against Crystal Palace, Burnley and West Ham United.
The run has allowed players such as William Saliba and Gabriel Martinelli to flourish, with some players unlucky to be missing out despite some impressive performances.
Why Jorginho could make way vs Sheffield United
Arsenal midfielder Jorginho produced an impressive display against Newcastle United, with the former Chelsea man coming away with TNT's Player of the Match award for his efforts.
During his 89-minute performance at the Emirates, the 32-year-old completed 92 passes – the most of anyone on either side. The former Chelsea man also won four duels, with the Italian playing a key role in Arteta's three-man midfield.
Despite his positive display, he could make way for the trip to face Chris Wilder's side with Arsenal looking to close the gap opened up by Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool over the course of the weekend.
It would be a tactical change with Arteta's side potentially wanting to take advantage of the Blades' defensive frailties at home so far this season.
Wilder's side have conceded three or more goals five times at Bramall Lane this season, with United currently having the worst defensive record in the division.
With that in mind, Arteta may want to replace Jorginho with a more forward-thinking player to put the hosts under a greater threat.
The man to replace Jorginho
Given the Blades' abysmal defensive record, Arteta could choose to deploy Leandro Trossard from the start for just the tenth time this campaign.
The Belgian, who's been described as a "Santi Cazorla regen" by sports scientist Rajpal Brar, boasts an impressive record this campaign, given his limited opportunities as a starter. Trossard has scored seven and assisted once in the Premier League this campaign, with the former Brighton man averaging a goal every 131 minutes in the league.
The Arsenal boss could play Trossard as a third midfielder, with Declan Rice operating deepest, Martin Odegaard as a box-to-box and the Belgian as a more advanced option behind Kai Havertz.
Alternatively, Arteta could deploy Havertz slightly deeper, allowing Troassard to take up a false nine role, similar to how he did against West Ham United, which resulted in the 29-year-old firing home a screamer.
Arsenal will likely dominate much of the ball against Wilder's side, with the Blades' manager set to stick with his low-block five at the back system.
Arteta's side will need more bodies in attacking areas to create an overload and subsequently create more opportunities against a side that will be happy to sit in and counter-attack.
Although Jorginho has the ability to dictate the play, the game at Bramall Lane could be a great opportunity to let Rice sit at the base with Odegaard and Trossard able to play slightly higher and cause the struggling side serious problems in the attacking third.
Tottenham Hotspur maintained their bid for Champions League qualification with a last-gasp win at home to Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend, with summer signing Brennan Johnson lashing home at the back post in the sixth minute of stoppage time to grab all three points.
That crucial victory also marked the welcome return of influential captain, Heung-min Son off the bench, the South Korean star making his return to action after enduring Asian Cup disappointment in Qatar.
While Spurs have performed admirably in the 31-year-old's absence, the north Londoners are undoubtedly a better team with him in it, showcased by the fact that it was Son who teed up Johnson for the game's decisive goal.
Now firmly out of Harry Kane's shadow, the former Bayer Leverkusen man leads the way for his side this season with 12 Premier League goals, while his latest contribution also ensures that he now has six assists to boot in the top-flight.
Such devastating form has once again illustrated just how lucky the club are to have the wing wizard on their books, with it likely to be a case of when and not if the forward pens a new deal, with just over a year left on his existing contract.
Although there is currently no need to think about replacing the £190k-per-week marksman due to his continued heroics, it may be wise for Ange Postecoglou and co to have a succession plan in place, if and when Son does eventually depart or see his form begin to dwindle.
Players who could replace Son at Spurs
In his absence while on international duty, the one-time Hamburg man saw his left-wing berth taken up by January arrival, Timo Werner, with the former Chelsea flop making a solid start with two assists from his first four league outings for the club.
With Spurs having the option to make the German's loan deal permanent for just £15m this summer, it looks as if the 27-year-old will be part of Postecoglou's plans over the next few years – unless something goes drastically wrong over the next few months.
Timo Werner applauding Tottenham supporters.
Whether the RB Leipzig man is of the desired quality to eventually fill Sons shoes on a long-term basis is another matter, however, with the Lilywhites likely to be wary of his dismal stint at Stamford Bridge, in which he scored just ten league goals in two seasons.
With alternatives such as Manor Solomon having been hampered by injury – and with both Dejan Kulusevski and Brennan Johnson typically featuring off the right flank – Postecoglou may have to search elsewhere to find a suitable successor to Son.

Of course, future transfer windows could aid in that pursuit, although there is perhaps a chance to look closer to home, with academy sensation Yago Santiago seemingly deserving an opportunity to impress at first-team level before too long.
Yago Santiago's style of play
The former Celta Vigo youth star – who arrived in England from his hometown club back in 2019 – has operated in a variety of attacking roles during his time in north London, albeit while typically thriving off the left flank this season.
The 20-year-old has been dubbed the 'total footballer' by reports in Spain of late, with the Galicia Press suggesting that he is getting 'closer and closer' to making his senior bow under Postecoglou, having been named on the bench in the Premier League and FA Cup this season.
With academy colleague Jamie Donley having already been handed a handful of brief cameos in recent times in the senior set-up, Santiago could well follow the England youth star, having become hard to ignore with 15 goals and eight assists in 63 games for the club's U23 side.
A talent with a "really bright future" at the club – in the words of Tottenham presenter Matt Tarr – the silky Spaniard has received glowing reports over recent seasons, with superhotspur hailing him as looking 'effortless with the ball at his feet' as he is 'so composed'.
As per the same source, the promising wideman – who previously trained with the first-team during Antonio Conte's stint in charge – has particularly impressed due to 'his pace and running in behind the defence', ensuring he could fit in smoothly to Postecoglou's approach.
Yago Santiago's season in numbers
Now on the cusp of the first-team, Santiago is doing all he can to catch the eye of the former Celtic boss amid his dazzling displays at youth level, having chipped in with six goals and four assists in just nine Premier League 2 appearances in 2023/24.
A right-footer like Son who seeks to cut in from the left, the Vigo native also caught the eye against senior opposition in this season's EFL Trophy, playing the full 90 minutes against both Colchester United and Peterborough.
Despite not scoring in those two outings, the future Spurs star did still impress having averaged three key passes per game as a marker of his creative prowess, with Son, for instance, averaging just 1.8 in that regard in the top-flight – albeit across 21 games.
Equally, what also sets Santiago apart is his 'excellent' work rate – as noted by superhotspur – having averaged 2.5 interceptions and two tackles per game in the competition, while also averaging seven balls recovered per game.

With two successful dribbles per game also under his belt, the emerging sensation appears to have it all in his locker, with it hopefully just a matter of time before this young diamond can sparkle in the senior ranks.
There may be a long way to go before he is rivalling the likes of Werner and Son, but all the signs point to a player who supporters can fall in love as the South Korean's dream successor.

Spurs are among the suitors for Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly, for instance, with the Englishman's contract expiring this summer. He may soon be a readily available free agent, and his top-flight experience makes him a very good option for the north Londoners.
A more ambitious open who's also been floated is Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite, coming amid his impressive season at Goodison Park as he puts himself in the conversation for a call-up to England's Euro 2024 squad.
There have been suggestions that Spurs wish to sign two "top-level" centre-backs in 2024, and with Dragusin sealed, they're set to go for another in the summer.

"The situation hasn't changed, and Tottenham have always intended to sign two top-level centre-backs across 2024," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport recently, who listed other potential targets.
"They’ve got one through the door, and now, in the summer window, the plan is to go after another. Calafiori and Morato might be mentioned now, but the net is being cast wider than that. They’ve got some interesting options opening up to them. Still, from what I understand, they’re not committing at this stage, even though they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window similar to how they did in the winter market.”
In these last two windows, the Lilywhites have shown a trend of buying young stars for their backline, with both Dragusin and Micky van de Ven under the age of 23. This indicates they're also considering the long-term and another defensive target with many years left ahead of him is Hull City centre-back Jacob Greaves.
Senior Tottenham official sent to Hull as Lange eyes Greaves
According to a report in The Mirror's print edition [10/03/2024], via TBR, Spurs sent a "senior" scout to run the rule over Greaves earlier this month as Postecoglou's side seemingly take an interest in the Englishman.
Tipped to be a "special" player by Grant McCann, Greaves has started 36 Championship matches as a mainstay for the Tigers, even bagging two goals and four assists in that time.
Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.
"The kid is going to be special, it’s as simple as that," said former Hull boss McCann, who exposed him to first-team football early doors.
"We don’t want him to have a dead year and when I say a dead year I think he’s beyond Under 23s football. We’re working hard trying to do that at the minute so we can get him exposed to men’s football."

Messi endured a rare big-moment slip-up in Argentina's Copa America quarter-final clash with Ecuador, pinging a penalty off the bar in La Albiceleste's shootout win. Ecuadorian goalkeeper Alexander Dominguez consoled the Inter Miami forward immediately after, but it was a shocking start to the shootout.

His blunder ultimately mattered little as Emi Martinez provided yet another memorable shootout performance, stopping two Ecuador attempts, while Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel and Nicolas Otamendi all converted for Argentina in a 4-2 shootout win.
Still, it's a haunting moment for the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner. One can't help but think of his missed attempt in the 2016 Copa America final – a moment that saw him briefly retire from the national team.

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain has been asked to return home from the CPL immediately. He had originally gone to the West Indies with a no-objection certificate that said he could play the entire tournament for Trinbago Knight Riders but it has now been revoked by the PCB with the aim of bringing the 19-year old back to play the Quaid-e-Azam trophy.Hasnain shot to prominence earlier this year, when he was picked up by the Quetta Gladiators even though at the time he had played only two first-class games. The reason for that became immediately apparent as the teenager started hitting speeds of 150 kph consistently and ended up with 12 wickets in 28 overs with an economy rate of 7.5. That led to a maiden call-up to the Pakistan one-day team in March and a World Cup spot in July (even though he didn’t get to play any games).Considering that, it was unsurprising that TKR came calling but the fact that one of Pakistan’s most promising bowlers was missing the first round of the Quaid-e-Azam trophy to play T20 cricket abroad became a talking point, especially in light of other senior Pakistan bowlers doing much the same. Mohammad Amir retired from Test cricket earlier this year and Wahab Riaz has also chosen to take an indefinite break from first-class cricket. These events – and perhaps a Test tour of Australia in November – prompted the PCB to call Hasnain back home so he can hone his long-form skills.
Celtic's disappointing week could be set to get worse with a departure under threat of collapsing at the eleventh hour, it has been reported.
Celtic miss out on chance to go top
It seemed certain that Celtic would regain control of the Scottish Premiership title race when Rangers fell to a surprise defeat over the weekend. But a poor performance and a sending-off saw them fall to a surprise defeat of their own, this time against Hearts, and let their arch-rivals off the hook.
It increased the pressure on Brendan Rodgers, who is struggling to fill the large void left by Ange Postecoglou and could see the title head to the other side of Glasgow for just the second time since 2011. With speculation around the Scot's future at the helm amid reports of transfer disagreement and tactical confusion, all things are not well at Celtic Park.

Now matters could get worse, with one player departure in doubt after what had been reported as positive developments, and a sense of urgency around the move.
Bernabei U-turn as Brazilian media left guessing
Just 24 hours ago, Bernabei appeared set to leave Celtic imminently, with Sport Witness reporting that Argentinian sources were revealing a move was basically done for the 23-year-old, who has managed just 8 appearances in the Scottish Premiership this season. He was supposed to be finalising a move to Brazilian outfit Internacional.
However, reports from Brazil have cast doubt on this in the time since, and Brazilian outlet Globo Sport (via Sport Witness) have since explained that though a move is being discussed, it is far from a done deal as had previously been suggested.
Celtic left-back Alexandro Bernabei.
Any deal for the Hoops outcast will have to be agreed urgently, with the Brazilian transfer window closing on Thursday evening. It means that the two clubs have less than 24 hours to complete any agreement, for the Argentine defender to pass his medical and sign on the dotted line.
The structure of the deal appears to have been broadly agreed; Bernabei will join the club on loan with an option to buy at the end of the season (should a deal go through), but there appears to be confusion around just how much that option to buy will be, with Sport Witness adding that 'no one in Brazil knows how much Celtic want' for a permanent transfer.
The 23-year-old arrived for just 4m euros but is under contract until 2027, meaning that there is still plenty of time for him to turn his career around at Celtic Park should Brendan Rodgers place his faith in him. However, given the chances he has been handed this season he may have to seek pastures new on a permanent basis.
For now though, it appears that he will have to hope that a move can be completed in the coming hours as he looks to get back to playing regular football again for at least the short term.
Manchester United fans have slammed the club for the deal to sell Donny van de Beek for a fraction of the cost they paid for the Dutch midfielder.

Fans slam 'disaster' deal
Midfielder to play Champions League
WHAT HAPPENED?
Girona have agreed a deal with United to sign van de Beek in a move that would end the former Ajax player's nightmare spell in Manchester. According to Relevo, an initial €500,000 (£423,000/$542,000) fee has been agreed between the two clubs, significantly less than the £35m (€41m/$45m) they spent on Van de Beek in 2020.

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING
One United fan @utdscope posted on X was simple in his assessment. They said: "Disaster of a deal."
Simon Walkden shared the sentiment, saying: "We are so bad at buying and selling players for good value."
Fans could not believe the low fee. @UtdTata tweeted: "500k is just crazy."
@Aig_space said: "Please ….this must be a joke"
@LeLenchLALxUTD found the humour in the deal, saying: "Bro worth a bag of chip."
Another fan, Christopher Skanes, was particuarly critical of the deal. He said: "He should be going for 10x that, at the very minimum."
Not all United fans were unhappy, and @adam_dworak was able to find some positives. He said: "On one hand, it's funny, but on the other hand, it's better than nothing. Additionally, the club gets rid of his salary from the payroll."
THE BIGGER PICTURE
While the initial fee is low, Fabrizio Romano has shared further details about the figures involves and United will reportedly earn more than just half a million Euros when all is said and done, with 'easy' add-ons up to €4/5m and more on top of those.
