Romano: Nottingham Forest bid to sign £100k-p/w "beast" instead of Gimenez

Nottingham Forest are locked in talks to sign an alternative to Santiago Gimenez in the final days of the transfer window, it has emerged.

Nottingham Forest target late reinforcements

Heading into the final month of the transfer window, Nottingham Forest had outlined a minimum of five new signings to make before the transfer window slammed shut, in order to give manager Nuno Espírito Santo the best chance of Premier League survival.

As per the reliable John Percy, the Reds were keen to sign two wingers, a forward, a goalkeeper and a left-back before August 30th.

So far, they have made good progress on that front; the arrivals of Ramon Sosa from CD Talleres and Jota Silva from Vitoria SC respectively have fulfilled their desire for fresh blood in wide areas, while they are also reportedly in talks to sign Aston Villa left-back Alex Moreno, who Unai Emery admitted was "close to leaving" the Villans.

Personal terms done: Nottingham Forest "very close" to signing £23k-p/w ace

It would be an interesting move for the Reds having seen first hand what he can do.

ByBen Browning Aug 19, 2024

Any deal could be a season-long loan for the Spaniard and would provide cover and competition for current left-back Ola Aina at the City Ground.

Meanwhile, Forest are also chasing a striker and had earmarked PSV attacker Gimenez as a potential target. However, they have seen their initial €25m (£21m) offer rejected by the Eredivisie side, who are believed to be holding out for around €40m (£34m) to sell the Mexican this summer. Now, they have identified an alternative to the 23-year-old.

Nottingham Forest table offer for "beast"

That comes in the shape of Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, who is set to be on the move this summer after managing just 11 Premier League starts in 2023/24.

The 25-year-old was an unused substitute for the Gunners as they beat Wolves 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium on the opening day of the season, and has already been the subject of a failed move to Marseille, who ultimately opted to sign Elye Wahi instead.

Now, he is on Nottingham Forest's radar, with the Reds having already sent an opening offer to Arsenal for his services, though it was rejected according to Fabrizio Romano.

As per David Ornstein, that initial bid totalled £25m including add-ons, but the Gunners are holding out for between £30m and £35m to part ways with their second choice striker.

Despite seeing limited game time, Mikel Arteta is still believed to rate Nketiah highly, while the Englishman is in no rush to leave the Emirates given he still has three years left to run on his £100,000-a-week deal.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah

Speaking after Nketiah scored against Nottingham Forest 12 months ago, Arteta hailed his striker as a "beast".

“Eddie sums up what we want this season in terms of the squad,” Arteta told the club’s official website.

“He was a player who was really disappointed not to start against Manchester City in the absence of Gabby [Gabriel Jesus], but he had an incredible impact in the game against City and he trained this week like a beast."

Now, that "beast" could well be heading to Nottingham.

Perfect for UCL: Aston Villa want £325k-p/w "phenomenon" who’s like Benteke

Aston Villa will embark on an exciting adventure when they return to the Champions League next season. It will be their first time playing amongst Europe’s elite since the competition rebranded from the European Cup in 1992. In fact, they haven’t played in the Champions League since 1982/83, having won the whole thing the season before, in 1981/82.

Villa’s pathway to qualification for the Champions League last season saw them finish fourth in the Premier League, two points clear of Tottenham Hotspur who occupied fifth and therefore the Europa League spot. In total, the Villans ended the campaign with 68 points.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

However, according to Understat’s expected points tally, they hugely exceeded their expectations. In reality, instead of their 68 points, Unai Emery’s side should have got 55.43xPTS, which would have placed them seventh in the top flight instead. However, their overachievement shows just how impressive the Midlands side performed last season.

Indeed, with their Champions League adventure awaiting them next term, the Villans will need to add players to their squad who can enhance their chances of a good performance in the competition. In fact, they have recently been linked with one player who could bring plenty of European experience to their squad.

Aston Villa target Premier League striker

The player in question here is Chelsea and Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku. Since returning to Stamford Bridge for £97.5m in 2021, the all-time record goalscorer for Belgium has become something of an outcast in Blue, and could now permanently leave this summer after several loan spells.

According to a report from Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato, the Villans are ‘pressing hard on the Belgian striker’, and could launch a bid and leave other suitors in the dust as they look to beat competition to his signature.

Indeed, the other side showing the strongest interest in Lukaku this summer is Italian giants Napoli. However, for Gli Azzurri to do a deal this summer, Victor Osimhen must depart the club. The Nigerian striker was linked with Chelsea, but a deal to Stamford Bridge may now be off after they are set to sign Samu Omorodion from Atleti.

Should Villa nip in front of Napoli in the queue to sign Lukaku this summer, they will have to fork out a fee of £30m, assuming Chelsea ask for the same price the 2022/23 Scudetto winners were charged for the Belgian.

Why Lukaku would be a good signing

It has certainly been an interesting few years for Lukaku, who put up some impressive numbers for his second club in Italy, AS Roma. The 31-year-old Belgian scored 21 goals and grabbed four assists in 47 games in all competitions last term. He grabbed 13 goals and three assists in 32 top-flight games in Italy, as well as seven goals and an assist in 13 Europa League games.

One thing that Lukaku can bring to Villa next season if he joins the club that could be crucial is experience and goals in the Champions League. He is vastly experienced in the biggest club competition in Europe and boasts an impressive record.

Stats from Transfermarkt

The 31-year-old’s excellent goalscoring record amongst Europe’s elite is better than some legends of the game. Italian icon Francesco Totti has only scored 17 goals in the Champions League, and legendary Brazilian striker Ronaldo boasts just 14 goals in 40 games.

Having played in a Champions League final, albeit ending up on the losing side, the former Inter striker could bring plenty of experience to a Villa side taking an unknown step into arguably club football's biggest competition.

Not only will he bring goals and experience in the Champions League, but the signing of the Chelsea man would mean he is the first Belgian striker to play for the club since Christian Benteke between 2012 and 2015.

The Belgian, who, like Lukaku, is something of a journeyman himself, was superb for the Villans during his time at the club. He played 101 games, getting himself on the scoresheet 49 times as well as grabbing 12 assists, before getting a big £32.5m move to Liverpool.

Benteke was a talisman for Villa, and the signing of Lukaku would certainly have shades of that prior deal, given he has an exceptional goalscoring record and could become a cult hero at Villa Park if he manages to find his best form.

One of the only stumbling blocks for a deal to sign Lukaku for Villa this summer could be his wages. The 31-year-old is currently earning an eye-watering £325k per week at Stamford Bridge according to Capology, which would see him be the highest earner at Villa Park by some distance.

The highest-paid players in Claret and Blue currently are Boubacar Kamara and his Belgium teammate Youri Tielemans, who both earn £150k per week. The Chelsea striker currently earns £175k per week more than those, and even if he accepted a wage reduction, it could be hard to negotiate a weekly wage in line with Villa’s current wage structure.

Sky Sports presenter Dougie Critchley once described Lukaku as an “absolute phenomenon”, and if he can rediscover his best form, such as what he showed at Everton or during his first spell at Inter, Villa could have one of the best strikers in the Premier League on their hands.

Inter Milan's former loan striker Romelu Lukaku.

There is no doubting Lukaku’s quality, and if he gets on a goalscoring run, Emery’s side could find themselves progressing through the Champions League thanks to one of the most exciting strikers of his generation.

Maresca must instantly drop Chelsea star who was given a 0/10 match rating

Heading into the new Premier League season, Chelsea were seen as the 'banter' club once again.

Why? Well, unless you've been living under a rock, Todd Boehly has waved his big fat chequebook around again to bolster his squad further.

New bodies were needed under Enzo Maresca and they have actually completed some impressive business this summer. Pedro Neto has long been sought-after by clubs in the Premier League. Tosin Adarabioyo was smart on a free transfer and Joao Felix is a pretty handy player.

Yet, it's the way in which they've handled player exits that defies belief. Academy graduates Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah were alienated from the first-team squad and the same treatment has been dished out to high-earner Raheem Sterling.

So, when the Blues tasted defeat against Manchester City on the opening weekend you feared the worst once again.

Fortunately, they have bounced back well, producing their best performance in many a month to dispatch Wolves 6-2 at Molineux on Sunday afternoon.

Chelsea's best player vs Wolves

There's no prize for guessing this one. Noni Madueke – who among the thrills and spills of this transfer window has been linked with an exit – scored a remarkable hat-trick during a frantic 14-minute period of football.

It was the first of his career and one that will likely now keep him at Stamford Bridge. Talk about timing. This Chelsea squad won't be easy to feature regularly in this season but the former PSV Eindhoven star has begun the season with some aplomb.

All three strikes were supplied by Cole Palmer, running Wolves ragged with a trio of goals that silenced a crowd who had been booing the winger due to comments on social media prior to the game.

His first may have been deflected beyond the goalkeeper by Rayan Ait-Nouri but there was no doubting the quality of the other two goals, firing beyond Jose Sa from very similar angles having been laid off by the inevitable Palmer.

That said, despite a rosy day for Chelsea, there was one notable underperformer in Blue.

Chelsea's worst player vs Wolves

Coming into this new campaign Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk was sporting a new head of hair. Gone were the luscious blonde locks. Instead, a skinhead had arrived back at Cobham, ready and raring to show something different on the pitch too.

Sadly, the mega-money signing during the winter of 2023 is still failing to produce the goods and is leaving fans to wonder why on earth they paid such a pretty penny to beat Arsenal to his signature.

Mudryk's lack of influence on the game was summed up by his withdrawal at the break. Maresca said after the game that he was "not happy" with his display in possession.

Why was that the case? Well, the stats do all of the heavy lifting for us. Inevitably producing fewer touches (13) than goalkeeper Robert Sanchez's 54, he left the pitch having mustered a tally of just five completed passes. From his low number of touches, he ceded possession on six occasions.

On that evidence, it's hardly a surprise the new manager was a bit fed up with the winger's performance.

To make matters worse he failed to carve out a single key pass on a day where Chelsea ran rampant. Mudryk also succeeded with just one of his two dribble attempts.

This was a particularly poor afternoon for the attacker who was given a hammering by the media post-game. Football.London's Bobby Vincent handed him a 5/10, lambasting his 'quiet' nature. GOAL were particularly scathing with reporter Mark Doyle suggesting it was a 0/10 display, writing that it was an 'embarrassingly ineffective display'. Tell us what you really think, eh?

So, with Neto champing at the bit for his first league start for Chelsea, Joao Felix recently signed and Christopher Nkunku also looking over his shoulder, it would not be a surprise to see Mudryk benched next time out.

Alastair Cook, Ryan ten Doeschate steal a march on young guns to inch Essex into ascendancy

Olly Stone and Dan Lawrence miss their chances to impress before Lord’s Test

Andrew Miller22-May-2021Warwickshire 166 and 0 for 0 trail Essex 217 (Cook 57, ten Doeschate 56, Harmer 40*) by 51 runsOn a day when two of England’s likely lads might have hoped to make final, indisputable cases for involvement in next week’s first Test against New Zealand, it was instead a pair of old stagers who stole a march on the young bucks, as Essex inched themselves into a position of quiet advantage against Warwickshire in the LV= County Championship.Olly Stone and Dan Lawrence are both strong bets for a starting berth at Lord’s in 11 days’ time, after being named last week in England’s 15-man squad, but on this occasion they ceded the limelight to Alastair Cook and Ryan ten Doeschate, with their combined age of 76, whose pair of fifties, allied to a responsible 40-run marshalling of the tail from Simon Harmer, secured a 51-run lead that might yet prove significant if Chelmsford’s fourth-day factor can come once again into play.A stalemate remains the strong likelihood, however, after an Essex performance that lacked the requisite ruthlessness to really turn the screw on their visitors, and another day of weather frustration – this time centred around bad light, which caused a two-hour delay to the afternoon session, including a ludicrous moment when the players returned to resume play, only to march back off before a ball had been bowled.Either way, the interruption seemed to affect Essex’s poise rather more than Warwickshire’s, who were perhaps grateful for a chance to regroup after a sketchy start to their day, including two dropped catches at square leg and point respectively – the latter by Dom Sibley to reprieve his England team-mate Lawrence before he had scored. But, having gone to lunch well placed on 65 for 2 after 24 overs, with Cook cruising towards his third half-century in his last four games, and Lawrence unfurling further glimpses of the startling strokeplay that had wrecked Derbyshire on this ground last week, Essex lost four wickets in 11 overs to slump to 125 for 6, and squander the platform that had been laid. The first to go was Lawrence, who was beaten for pace by Liam Norwell and comprehensively yorked for 14 – not the most encouraging mode of dismissal given the quality of the New Zealand attack that he may be facing next week. But Warwickshire’s true golden-arm would prove to be Will Rhodes, whose diligent seam-up picked off three scalps in his first four overs, including Cook to the second ball he faced.Up until that moment, Cook had been playing the most authoritative innings of the match. All season long, his cover-driving has been particularly eye-catching – not always for the right reasons, given that his record-breaking Test career had essentially been built on his two most risk-free strokes, the cut and the shovel to leg. But, there was no sense of anything other than sweet timing as Cook opened his account for the day with a brace of drives off Oliver Hannon-Dalby and Norwell, before adding a third to remind Stone that raw pace is all very well, but raw pace in the slot will be punished however burgeoning your reputation. But wobbly seam on a full and wide line, on the other hand … Cook had only himself to blame when he opened the face for another drive as Rhodes joined the fray in the 36th over, and scuffed his effort straight to Rob Yates at gully. He slumped on his bat, frustrated at giving his wicket away cheaply after laying the groundwork, much as he had done against Derbyshire last week, but Rhodes was only just getting started.Paul Walter came and went in a curious flurry. After using his height to get the better of a bouncer barrage from Stone – a flick for four and six over the keeper’s head forced a rapid change of approach – he was then nailed on the pad for 22 by a full-length swinger from Rhodes, who steadied himself one over later to pocket a wild top-edge from Adam Wheater, who won’t want to look back on his duck in a hurry. At the other end, however, Tendo was doing what Tendo does, chivvying the score along with a particular eye for anything remotely wide on the off side. With Harmer steadfast alongside him, and scoreless for the first 20 balls of his innings, Essex regained the initiative. Stone served up a pair of short balls that Ten Doeschate swatted for four through fine leg and third man respectively to march to a 74-ball fifty.By the end of the same over, the scores were level and the seventh-wicket stand had extended to 44 when Norwell extracted one swing too many to strangle ten Doeschate down the leg side for 56.What followed was a curious game of cat-and-mouse in arguably the best batting conditions of the match. While Essex – Harmer to the fore – resolved not to do anything rash as they eked their way towards a precious batting point that may yet prove vital in a tightly permutated Group One, Warwickshire seemed content to keep the contest in check, with Tim Bresnan’s hard lines belatedly coming to the fore for figures of 10-3-8-1, rather than risk the awkward challenge of a ten-over batting stint before the close. As it was, they were left with a solitary over to negotiate after Danny Briggs had spun his way through Sam Cook, and Stone – armed with the new ball – had unpicked Jamie Porter for his solitary scalp of a brisk but unthreatening day’s work. And it was Briggs himself who saw it off as the nightwatchman. It’s hard to see a result in this contest, but compared to most of the matches in a rain-wrecked round, the third day finished on a relative knife-edge.

Man Utd now enter race to sign £205,000-a-week "magician" to replace Antony

Manchester United are considering making a move for an attacking "magician" this summer, according to a fresh transfer rumour from abroad.

Man Utd enjoying productive summer

The Red Devils knew reinforcements were needed at the end of last season, even though they won the FA Cup, in order to fare far better in the Premier League this time around. Joshua Zirkzee was the first man through the door, coming in from Bologna, and it paved the way for Sir Jim Ratcliffe to make further additions.

Leny Yoro then arrived from Lille, coming in as arguably one of the most exciting young centre-backs in world football, and while a long-term injury is a massive blow, he could be a generational signing at the heart of the defence. Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui are also both joining from Bayern Munich, further strengthening United's defensive options.

De Ligt for Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils are still being linked with plenty of signings with less than three weeks of the transfer window remaining, however, and they are believed to be confident that Everton will accept their next incoming bid for Jarrad Branthwaite. The Englishman has excelled over the past 12 months and could make Erik ten Hag's centre-back options even more formidable.

In the centre of midfield, Youssouf Fofana and Sander Berge, of Monaco and Burnley respectively, have both been mooted as potential options for United, as Ratcliffe looks to make significant inroads in the middle of the park.

Man Utd considering move for Raphinha to replace Antony

According to a report from Spanish publication Sport, Manchester United and INEOS are also interested in signing Barcelona winger Raphinha before the current transfer window ends.

The update claims that the Red Devils are close to moving on Antony, seeing the Brazilian as a replacement for the current Old Trafford player and fellow countryman.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

Raphinha is an enormously talented player – one who scored 17 goals and chipped in with 12 assists in the Premier League for Leeds United – so he represents a great option for United.

The 27-year-old has an Antony-like ability to cut inside onto his left foot from the right wing, but unlike his compatriot, he delivers end product at a far more consistent rate. Former Red Devils wide man Dan James knows all about his qualities, waxing lyrical about him during their time together at Elland Road:

"He’s a magician. He’s always been a great player – I played against him at United and he was always great – but he’s improved so much. He fully deserved his Brazilian call-up and I think since he got it, he’s pushed on even more, he’s even more confident. He can do absolutely anything on the pitch. It’s great playing with him."

Agreement reached: Man Utd set to sign midfielder to huge £72.8m contract

This is massive news for Erik ten Hag.

ByHenry Jackson Aug 12, 2024

The £205,000-a-week Raphinha ticks so many boxes for United and he appears to be in his prime years, so if they could snap him up and offload Antony, it would prove to be a significant upgrade, considering the latter has just 11 goals and five assists in 82 appearances for the Red Devils.

Tony Bloom reveals the brutal truth behind De Zerbi’s exit from Brighton

Brighton and Hove Albion's Chairman Tony Bloom has revealed just why Roberto de Zerbi was surprisingly let go from his post at the end of last season, stemming from a fundamental disagreement between the Italian and the club that was present from day one.

De Zerbi in demand

Ahead of Brighton's clash with Manchester United on the final day of the 2023-24 Premier League season, the Seagulls announced that Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi would be leaving the club.

"We have mutually agreed to end Roberto’s contract at a time that suits both parties allowing us the earliest opportunity to plan for next season, and Roberto plenty of time to consider his next move and his future", Bloom explained.

It came as a major shock, with De Zerbi having been hailed by fellow managers and the media for his stint at the AMEX Stadium, and having been linked with a move to Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona and AC Milan, only for his release clause on the south coast to prove prohibitive.

He helped guide Brighton to their first ever taste of European football, but a tough season saw them slip to 11th as injuries and defensive woes crippled the Seagulls in the wake of the exits of Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister the previous summer.

Now at Marseille, the top level interest which promised to transpire never did, and now Bloom has revealed just why his sudden exit had to happen.

Fundamental disagreement over transfer strategy

That comes thanks to a major disagreement over the transfer strategy that Brighton utilise, which often revolves around selling their best assets for a massive profit and replacing them with young, largely unknown talents based on data-driven recruitment, as they did when replacing Caicedo with youngster Carlos Baleba.

Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba

The transfer and scouting department have the major and final say on proceedings, something that De Zerbi was clearly not keen to buy into, judging by comments made by Bloom about his departure.

"Roberto had thoughts on certain players, but that is not the way we as a club work. The club will decide on the players potentially to bring into the club, in conjunction with the head coach", Bloom explained to The Athletic.

"It’s not a situation, the way we work, that the head coach says, ‘I like this player and that player’, and that’s what we do (in terms of signings). If a head coach has some ideas, that comes in as part of the process, but a head coach really liking a player has got to fit many characteristics, it has got to fit with the data analysis we do.

All 20 Premier League clubs' record signings

From Manchester City to Ipswich Town, here’s a look at each Premier League club’s most expensive signing.

ByBrogan Clasper Sep 4, 2024

"When Roberto came in (After Graham Potter's departure in September 2022), we explained the process and the philosophy. If there is non-alignment between the head coach and the club, things are never going to work out long-term."

Clearly successful as a strategy to date, even the ability of De Zerbi in the dugout was not enough to convince Brighton to change their policies, and they will be hoping that in Fabian Hurzeler they have found a man who is just as tactically adept while also being happy to work with the players he is given.

Liverpool reach £30m agreement in principle to sign "outstanding" player

Liverpool are believed to have reached an agreement in principle to sign an "outstanding" 23-year-old, according to a new transfer report.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds made an impressive start to life under Arne Slot on Saturday afternoon, winning 2-0 away to Ipswich Town to get their Premier League season off to an ideal start. Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah got the goals at Portman Road, but despite the positivity surrounding the result, there is continued frustration at no signings coming in this summer.

There is still time for that to change, of course, and Liverpool continue to be linked with potential additions, including Rennes left-back Adrien Truffert. Andy Robertson's very best days are arguably behind him, while Kostas Tsimikas feels like a squad player, so the 22-year-old could be a savvy signing before the end of the month.

The Reds' failure to sign Real Sociedad hero Martin Zubimendi has caused great frustration among the fanbase, with a proper No.6 arguably still needed this summer. Atalanta ace Teun Koopmeiners has been continually linked with a move to Anfield and a fresh report has once again stated that he is on their radar.

In terms of long-term reinforcements, 18-year-old midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl has emerged as a reported option for Liverpool, having impressed for Norwegian side Tromso. He has already appeared 17 times for Norway at youth team level, and could be viewed as a big talent for the future.

Liverpool reach agreement in principle with "outstanding" ace

According to a new report from journalist Graeme Bailey for HITC, Liverpool have an agreement in principle to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, with the Reds set to pay £30m next year.

The 23-year-old cannot sign for the Reds this summer and then head out on loan to a Premier League rival, so Mamardashvili will remain contracted to Valencia and is on course to join Bournemouth on loan for 2024/25 before heading to Anfield.

Mamardashvili showed at Euro 2024 precisely why he is rated as one of Europe's most exciting young 'keepers currently, standing out as one of Georgia's best player in the tournament. His tally of 30 saves in Germany was the second-most in any Euros in history, while former England stopper Paul Robinson has said of him:

"Where this leaves Kelleher is another conversation. Alisson is 31 years old now, you look at him, he missed a good chunk of last season. Mamardashvili, he's an outstanding talent, at 23 years old, he was the best goalkeeper in La Liga last year at Valencia."

As Robinson alludes to, there is a Caoimhin Kelleher conundrum for Liverpool to deal with, considering what an impressive deputy he has been to Alisson in recent seasons, but it could be that the Irishman stays put for now, before moving on next summer when Mamardashvili comes in.

Either way, the Georgian looks like a perfect successor to Alisson between the sticks, although Reds supporters will hope the Brazilian isn't going anywhere for a while, given his status as one of the best 'keepers of his generation.
