Tuchel could axe £182m disaster trio if he gets the Man Utd job

Erik ten Hag’s position as Manchester United manager is becoming more under threat as the season goes by. The Red Devils have started the season poorly, and find themselves in 14th in the Premier League after seven games. They have just seven points to their name and have scored five goals, the joint second-lowest in the top flight. It has certainly been a poor start to the new campaign.

With that in mind, it is not surprising that United’s hierarchy, headed by new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, are debating the Dutchman’s future as manager. The Manchester Evening News’ chief United writer, Samuel Luckhurst, claims the club are ‘lining up’ Thomas Tuchel as the new boss.

Should the German get the job at Old Trafford, he would no doubt want to make some changes to the squad. Not only would he want to add new faces, but he may also wish to move on some of United’s current stars. Here are three of them who could be given the boot…

1 Casemiro

The first player Tuchel might decide to move on from the club should he get the prestigious role at Old Trafford is midfielder Casemiro.

It is fair to say that the Brazilian has found life difficult in the last 18 months or so, and has looked like a shadow of his former self. The Brazil has struggled with his mobility around the pitch, lack of control in possession and tendency to dive into tackles.

United signed the 32-year-old from Real Madrid for a whooping £70m, leaving the club where he won the Champions League five times, including the legendary threepeat in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Sadly, United’s number 18 has had a steep decline in his form, which has seen his minutes diminish over the seasons he has been at the club. The Brazil international was a key player in his first campaign, playing 51 times and 3905 minutes as United won the Carabao Cup and finished fourth.

Last term, the midfield battler played fewer minutes, largely due to injury. He played 32 times in all competitions, and 2578 minutes in total. However, his decline was noticeable, and the midfielder has played just nine times, including six in the Premier League, just 548 minutes.

Manager Focus

When considering his rapid decline, and his wage of an eye-watering £350k per week, United’s highest earner, it may well make sense for Tuchel to move him on. The Red Devils have Kobbie Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and the likes of Toby Collyer who could take his place, so it might not be too much of a miss for United in the long run.

2 Antony

Antony is another player who could leave Old Trafford if Tuchel moves to the club. The winger joined the club for an extraordinary £81.3m fee but has underwhelmed during his time as a Red Devil.

The former Ajax winger, who played under Ten Hag in Amsterdam, has simply not lived up to expectations given the extortionate fee he cost. The winger has played 86 times for the club but has managed just 12 goals and five assists in that time.

Granted, this is not just on the winger. He has not played in the same system where he thrived at Ajax, with Ten Hag’s United side at times happy to concede possession and become deadly in transition rather than be a side who have the majority of the ball, especially in the opposition’s third.

With that being said, he has not lived up to expectations and Tuchel might prefer other profiles of winger, more in the mould of Marcus Rashford. He has spoken highly of United’s number 10 in the past, calling him “a big threat” before praising the impact he has had at Old Trafford.

Antony

It certainly feels like a fresh start for the Brazilian at a new club would be the best thing for all parties. It also means the Red Devils get his wages off the books; Antony earns an extraordinary £200k per week, the fourth-highest earner at the club.

ByLuke Randall Sep 4, 2025 3 Victor Lindelof

One of United’s longest-serving players is now Victor Lindelof. The Sweden captain joined the club in June 2017, signing from Benfica for a fee of £31m. Whilst he played a key role at the back with Harry Maguire under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he has been more of a squad player under Ten Hag.

Lindelof has notched up an impressive number of appearances for the Red Devils. The 30-year-old has played 260 times for the Red Devils, even managing to score four goals and register seven assists.

Victor Lindelof

However, the central defender has not had many minutes under Ten Hag since he took over at Old Trafford. He has played just 64 times under the tutelage of the Dutchman, and whilst he has suffered from injuries too in that time, he has not been the first choice ahead of the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

Nicknamed ‘The Iceman’, he was cool, calm and collected in arguably his finest moment in that famous Red shirt. Lindelof slotted home the winning penalty in the 2022/23 FA Cup semi-final shootout against Brighton and Hove Albion at Wembley, to send United through to the showpiece event, which they ended up losing to Manchester City.

United’s number two has been a superb servant to the club and is into his eighth season at the 13-time Premier League champions. With that being said, United may well want to sell the defender, who earns £120k per week, if Tuchel becomes manager.

It is unsurprising that the German would want to give the squad a refresh should he get the job at Old Trafford. Casemiro, Antony and Lindelof are just three players who could depart, with Tuchel looking to bring in some new faces to help refresh the squad and take United back to the top of English and European football.

Nottingham Forest ready to pay £13m release clause for 19 y/o rising star

Nottingham Forest face a daunting trip to Anfield to face Liverpool on Saturday, and ahead of that game they are being linked with a move for an exciting European player, according to a recent report. It has been a good start to the Premier League season for the Reds as they are unbeaten in their first three league games, with their 11 new signings strengthening the squad significantly.

Nottingham Forest player suffers international duty injury; he's had tests

Nuno Espirito Santo and Nottingham Forest have suffered a blow during the international break.

ByBrett Worthington Sep 11, 2024 Nottingham Forest injury news

Saturday’s game against Liverpool represents a difficult afternoon for Forest, as they face a side who have won all three of their league games so far and look to be in very good form, not even conceding a goal. Nuno Espirito Santo will want his players to be at their very best and will hope he has as much of his squad available as possible.

However, the Premier League side didn’t manage to get through the international break without receiving bad news. Defender Willy Boly suffered a calf injury while on international duty with the Ivory Coast, as confirmed by his international manager. Boly didn’t feature in his country’s first game against Zambia, and Emerse Fae has revealed since that the player has suffered a calf injury in training.

Fae told reporters: “Regarding the absence of Willy Boly, I will simply explain to you: he was unfortunately injured in training just before our match against Chad. Examinations revealed a calf injury, and he is therefore unavailable. He returned to the club to recover.”

It is unclear how long the 33-year-old will be out for, but it appears as though he will be unavailable for the Liverpool match and possibly some of the games that follow. While all eyes for Nuno are on Anfield however, it appears the club's recruiting department are getting a head start on their 2025 business.

Nottingham Forest ready to pay £13 million release clause for 19 y/o

According to El Periodico, relayed by Nottingham Forest News, Forest want to sign young forward Adrian Liso in January and are ready to pay the £13 million release clause. His club, Real Zaragoza, would even give in and welcome the approach, seemingly hoping to turn some profit from a promising academy talent.

Forest are keen on striking a deal in the upcoming January transfer window and it is claimed that Zaragoza are “buzzing” about the are interest, although they also face competition from La Liga side Getafe so Zaragoza may be wishing for a bidding war.

The 19-year-old winger came through the academy at the Spanish side and, so far, he has played more games for the academy than he has for the first team. Liso, who can operate on the left or up front, has scored three goals in 26 appearances for Zaragoza’s second team. He would of course be a risky signing for Forest, as he is only 19 and has yet to establish himself at senior level, but the scouting department are clearly impressed by what they've seen so far.

Liverpool now keeping tabs on £100m star wanted by Vincent Kompany’s Bayern

Still looking to add to their midfield, Liverpool are now reportedly keeping tabs on the progress of one transfer target who Michael Edwards could steal in to hijack ahead of Bayern Munich.

Liverpool transfer news

Whilst the Reds sit top of the Premier League even without a summer full of investment, they’ll be well aware of how unsustainable their position at the top is without the added depth they could welcome in 2025.

Of course, it wasn’t for the want of trying that a midfielder failed to complete a move to Anfield in the summer, with Martin Zubimendi simply changing his mind and rejecting Liverpool, but that’s not to say alternatives weren’t available.

Liverpool battling Man Utd to sign "flamboyant" gem compared to Di Maria

He’s one for the future…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 2, 2024

Their summer failure has at least made the 2025 task clear as day, however. A defensive midfielder to compete or sit alongside the recently-emerged Ryan Gravenberch must be the priority, even if the Reds find themselves flying under new boss Arne Slot.

With that said, those at Anfield have reportedly turned their attention towards a man in demand. According to The Boot Room, Edwards is now keeping tabs on Adam Wharton ahead of a potential move that would see Liverpool hijack a deal and jump ahead of Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich as well as Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Wharton impressed against Liverpool last season, as Crystal Palace shocked the Reds to secure a rare Anfield victory. Since then, he has gone on to make his England debut and steal further headlines, before struggling alongside the rest of Oliver Glasner’s side in an early period to forget in the current campaign.

If the former Blackburn Rovers man swiftly returns to his best though, then there’s no doubt that the rumours over his Selhurst Park future will continue to arrive, with FSG, Edwards and Richard Hughes now firmly in the race.

"Incredible" Wharton could complete Liverpool midfield

At just 20 years old, Wharton’s first struggle for form was always going to arrive at one stage, but once he reaches the other side of his current blip, big things could once again await. He more than proved himself in his Anfield audition last season, winning eight out of 10 duels and making six tackles in a dominant display in the middle of the park. Now, as Liverpool look to add to their midfield, Wharton could emerge to become Slot’s missing piece.

Unsurprisingly, the Palace star has earned plenty of praise during his time at Selhurst Park, including from teammate Eberechi Eze, who said via BBC Sport: “Playing with him at Palace, I’ve got used to seeing the way he plays and understanding him. He’s very calm, composed, and a joy to play with.

“For someone so young, he’s very mature and very wise. When you speak to him, it feels like you’re speaking to someone older than you, that’s the type of person he is. He’s an incredible player.”

Alas, amid such impressive interest, those in South London may need to appreciate their midfielder whilst they still can, with Anfield potentially awaiting Wharton in 2025 despite Palace’s valuation of £100m.

Friedkin hold internal talks about hiring "great" serial winner at Everton

As the Friedkin Group continue to contemplate Sean Dyche’s Everton future, they’ve reportedly held internal discussions about hiring a manager who has won all there is to win in English football.

Friedkin could ruthlessly replace Dyche

Finally set to emerge out of the storm that is Everton’s ownership problem, Dyche could now find his job at risk in ruthless fashion. The Toffees have endured a dire start to the campaign, picking up the habit of dropping points from two-goal leads, but at least eased some pressure on themselves by defeating Crystal Palace for their first Premier League victory of the campaign last time out.

That victory has done no harm for Dyche, but the pressure is still on amid reports that the Friedkin Group want to appoint the likes of Gareth Southgate or former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian has even reportedly identified Piotr Zielinski as a player he would bring to Goodison Park, should the new owners turn his way in the coming months. If it’s not Sarri, meanwhile, then the Premier League may just get the return of one of its biggest pantomime villains.

Lampard wanted Everton to sign star now worth £85m but got Maupay instead

The Toffees could have missed a trick over one centre-forward signing…

ByJoe Nuttall Oct 3, 2024

According to Football Insider, the Friedkin Group have held internal discussions about appointing Jose Mourinho, despite the former Manchester United manager’s current role at Fenerbahce. Reports indicate that the so-called special one cannot be ruled out in what would be a sensational move from those at Goodison Park.

Dan Friedkin, of course, knows Mourinho well from their time together at AS Roma in a spell that saw the Italian side win the Europa Conference League. Now, they could be set to reunite and hand him what could be one last chance to leave an added mark on English football.

"Great" Mourinho would be blockbuster appointment

If Friedkin wants to steal the headlines, then appointing Mourinho is certainly the way to do it. Everywhere the manager goes, people watch, whether it’s Tottenham Hotspur, Fenerbahce or Roma. Now, as Everton prepare for the start of a new era at the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium, they could start fresh on the pitch with what would be a blockbuster arrival.

There would be questions over whether Mourinho can still perform wonders in England’s top flight, but after he worked his magic to welcome European gold during his time in Rome, Everton’s bet would at least be one to watch.

Earning high praise as a result of that Europa Conference League win, Mourinho earned the respect of Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, who told Radio Serie A, via Goal: “He’s been successful even if the Giallorossi are not considered among the best teams. It’s not surprising because Mourinho is an honest person and a great coach, so he built an amazing connection with the fans, which is positive.”

With the exception of Spurs, and Fenerbahce as things stand, Mourinho has won silverware at every club he’s managed in what must surely be a selling point for Friedkin to chase his signature.

Laxman: Rohit’s adjustments more in his mindset than technique

It was worth the wait. Rohit Sharma’s first Test hundred away from home took India into a dominant position against England at The Oval, leaving them well-placed to push for a 2-1 lead in the series.Rohit shared partnerships of 83 and 153 for the first and second wicket with KL Rahul and Cheteshwar Pujara, pressing on through the third morning after seeing out 16 overs on the second evening. He batted within himself for most of the day in gloomy, overcast conditions but moved from 94 to his hundred by swinging Moeen Ali for six over long-on.Rahul fined for dissent

India opener KL Rahul was fined 15% of his match fee for violating the ICC Code of Conduct by showing dissent at an umpiring decision.
The incident occurred during the third day of the fourth Test, in the 34th over of India’s second innings, when Rahul showed dissent on being adjudged caught behind following a review. He was also handed one demerit point for the offence, his first in 24 months.
The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Alex Wharf, third umpire Michael Gough and fourth official Mike Burns. Rahul admitted to the Level 1 breach and accepted the penalty imposed by match referee Chris Broad, so there was no need for a formal hearing.

He was eventually dismissed in bizarre fashion, heaving a pull straight to long leg when Ollie Robinson dug the second new ball into the pitch, and when Robinson had Pujara caught in the slips via an inside edge into his back thigh five balls later, England were back in the game. But Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja – retaining his spot at No. 5 – battled through before bad light brought an early close shortly before 5.45pm local time.Rohit rode his luck at times, offering two chances to Rory Burns at second slip, but neither was taken. The first came on the second evening when he had made only six: he edged James Anderson into the cordon, but Burns appeared not to pick the ball up against the backdrop of the crowd and only realised it had come in his direction once it had brushed his foot on its way to the boundary.Rohit Sharma deposited one in the stands at long-on to get to his century•Getty ImagesThe second came on 31, when Ollie Robinson had him poking defensively at a wide-ish ball on a good length. Third slip had been moved into the covers shortly before, meaning Burns had to fling himself to his right; he could only get a fingertip to it, pushing it down towards third man.Anderson made the breakthrough shortly after Burns’ second drop, inducing an outside edge from Rahul. Rahul had started brightly, driving Chris Woakes down the ground for four and pulling him for six, but England bowled dry to stem the flow of runs. Anderson found a hint of movement away off the seam as Rahul came forward to defend; the on-field decision was not out, but the DRS showed a healthy outside edge.Related

Stats – Rohit Sharma's first overseas Test century

Rahul gestured to the umpires that he had flicked his back pad with his bat on the way through, but replays confirmed the ball had hit the bat after that. England reviewed an lbw appeal shortly before lunch with Rohit on 42, but DRS confirmed it was an optimistic shout.Pujara started his innings brightly, admittedly helped by some loose bowling from England’s change bowlers, but had to overcome an injury scare shortly after lunch. He rolled his ankle turning at the non-striker’s end and underwent seven minutes of treatment from the physio with heavy strapping before resuming.Rohit punched Craig Overton off the back foot for two to bring up his fifty and Pujara continued to bat fluently, cutting two boundaries in the space of three balls off Overton – the second a deft, late upper-cut over the vacant gully region. Rohit cruised through the 90s, pulling Anderson for four and then bringing up his hundred with a straight six, celebrating in restrained style.Rohit’s comparative struggles overseas compared to in India have often been used as a stick to beat him with but this was further proof that he is still one of the best all-format players in the world. This was his third 50+ score in the series and his eighth Test hundred in all – three of them brought up with a six.Cheteshwar Pujara brings out the upper cut during his knock of 61•Getty ImagesPujara brought up his own half-century – his second in three innings – by steering Overton away behind square after tea, as England tried out a short-ball strategy with the second new ball looming to no great effect. The crowd were subdued, with the partnership extending past 150 as Moeen and Root’s offbreaks were milked. But Robinson struck twice in the first over bowled with the new ball to change the complexion of the day and enliven the crowd. The first was an innocuous ball, a back-of-a-length loosener which hardly got up above waist-height, which Rohit inexplicably pulled straight to long leg; five balls later, Pujara was cramped for room playing off the back foot and inside-edged to third slip via the back thigh, given out on review.Jadeja walked out to join Kohli, keeping his position at No. 5 after his surprise promotion in the first innings, and the pair saw India through to the close with Kohli again looking in superb form, creaming two cover drives away for four. They will resume with a lead of 171 on the fourth morning and while the pitch appears to have flattened out, India will be much the happier side overnight.

Injury-hit Man City must make January signings or risk letting Women's Super League title hopes slip away

With the likes of Lauren Hemp and Bunny Shaw still sidelined, the Cityzens risk lacking depth and match-winners in the second half of the season

New Year, new signing. Just 12 hours of the January transfer window had passed when Manchester City kickstarted their business for the month, announcing the arrival of defender Rebecca Knaak. It was a timely transfer, following Alex Greenwood's knee surgery in December, but it's not the only position that the club needs to address in the winter market due to injuries.

As the Women's Super League returns this weekend, Chelsea have a comfortable six-point cushion over City at the top of the table and find themselves in quite the opposite position to their nearest rivals, boasting plenty of depth while knowing that some big stars, such as Sam Kerr and Lauren James, are returning from spells on the sidelines in the second half of this season.

"We're really happy with that signing," City head coach Gareth Taylor told reporters this month, "and we'll see if there's some more to come." Fans will hope that is a hint that there is indeed more business on the horizon as this team gets ready to compete for trophies on four fronts, against some absolute juggernauts of the game.

To opt to power through and wait patiently for big names to return would be a conservative move, one unlikely to pay dividends as City chase a first WSL title since 2016.

Getty ImagesInjuries galore

Heading into the winter break, City's list of absentees was fairly extensive. Greenwood's knee injury in mid-December made her the latest addition to a group that already included Vivianne Miedema, Lauren Hemp, Bunny Shaw, Risa Shimizu and Sandy MacIver. It's not the longest injury list by any means, but City don't have a big squad as it is, and it's the significance of some of those names, the likes of Hemp and Shaw especially, that is also concerning.

City were able to welcome Miedema back last weekend, as they beat Ipswich in the FA Cup fourth round, but she's still very much in the process of being built back up after playing 30 minutes on her return from a third knee surgery in two years. "Some other players," Taylor explained, "will be slightly longer."

"Obviously Lauren and Alex, as we're aware of. Bunny was with us [on our winter training camp], which was good. She was out training separately but from what I saw, she looked really good. She feels really good, so we'll see what that looks like for her. Whether we can get her back in this next period or not, we'll see, but hopefully we can, because, again, similar to what we're saying about Viv and Alex, they're really influential players."

AdvertisementGetty ImagesOpportunities emerge

Of course, there are silver linings to this issue, that being that there are several young players getting opportunities as a result. Lily Murphy, in particular, has been a revelation this season, the lightning fast 18-year-old helping to bolster an attack that has been left especially light because of injuries. Naomi Layzell, the young defender who signed from Bristol City in the summer, got to play a starring role in victory over Barcelona due to the lack of depth at full-back; Laura Blindkilde Brown, who joined from Aston Villa last January, has emerged as a more regular starter; and there are several academy graduates getting more of a look-in, such as Gracie Prior, Codie Thomas and Eve O'Carroll.

"I think that's one of the positives," Taylor said last week. "The big change, I think for me, was in the summer, being able to have those guys with us training on a regular basis. To be able to come away with us to Perth was great, because it's really difficult for young players, I think, when they're only potentially training with the first-team group one or two occasions a week. So to be with us full time has been really good and it was a big effort to be able to achieve that, and the likes of Lily have really stepped up."

Getty Images SportCompeting with a juggernaut

There's nothing wrong with giving the young players a chance, and the aforementioned names have put in some really good performances for City this season to help them get some big results. But it would be wildly unfair, for example, to assume that Murphy can simply come in and deliver the consistently top-class quality of a Hemp when battling for the WSL title – and the FA Cup, the League Cup, and the Champions League.

Let's take a look at what Chelsea, the team City are chasing down, did in this situation 12 months ago. Dealt a major setback when Kerr suffered a devastating ACL injury, the Blues did not hesitate to go out and replace her with another top-quality centre forward, despite already having Mia Fishel, a United States international, in the squad as her back-up. Chelsea set a British-record fee for a transfer in the women's game when they signed Mayra Ramirez from Levante, and that aggressive, front-footed approach paid dividends when she produced a blistering performance on the final day of the WSL campaign to deliver the Blues' fifth-successive title. It also looked like an even greater move just a few weeks after the contract was signed, as Fishel was struck down with her own ACL injury.

Title-winning teams don't sit back and hope things will be alright. They go out and make sure they are in the best possible position to compete for trophies, no matter what is thrown at them. City might not be dealing with two ACL injuries, but their squad also isn't as deep and, crucially, they are the chaser here. That's not to say they have to splash out a record-breaking fee for new recruits, but they are at risk of only having the bare bones in crucial positions as the business end of the season rolls around, especially in attack.

Getty ImagesHectic schedule

It's not just because of the players Chelsea have at their disposal that January transfers should be a priority; it's because City find themselves in a fantastic position, still competing on four fronts, which is also a demanding one.

On Sunday, they take on Manchester United in a big WSL clash. Three days later, they visit their city rivals for a League Cup quarter-final. Three days later, they're on the road again, travelling to Aston Villa. "After that, it's not like the schedule kind of lightens up," Taylor conceded last week. "If you are successful in those competitions and you move forward, then the games come thick and fast."

There is a massive home game against Arsenal just two days after the January transfer window closes, with any potential League Cup semi-final to follow in midweek, while FA Cup fifth round action will then bookend another potentially huge week. This is the kind of schedule you cannot get through without depth and an array of options, not if you want to win these competitions.
