Sri Lanka are in talks to tour Pakistan for a series of three ODIs which will be vital preparation for both teams ahead of the Women’s ODI World Cup global qualifier that starts on November 21 in Zimbabwe. If the tour goes ahead the matches will be Sri Lanka’s first in 18 months, since the T20 World Cup in February-March last year.Talks for the bilateral series have happened as an eleventh-hour arrangement after the ECB pulled their men and women’s teams from a tour of Pakistan in mid-October citing concerns over the players’ “mental and physical well-being” as well as security.ESPNcricinfo understands that Harshitha Madavi will likely lead Sri Lanka given Chamari Athapaththu, the regular captain, had taken the SLC’s permission months before this series was ever in the works to go and play the WBBL. She is currently in Adelaide, undergoing quarantine with the Perth Scorchers. If these three ODIs are confirmed – and the PCB said it is still a “work in progress” – Sri Lanka will fly out to Pakistan on October 15, following a seven-day self-isolation period. A practice game is also on the schedule.Related

SLC rolls out plan for women's T20 league in October

Considering they may be coming out of an 18-month break from international cricket, newly-appointed women’s head coach Hashan Tillakaratne has been focused on doing what he can to get rid of the players’ ring rust.”From October onwards we’re trying to play at least nine games with the Under-17 side boys,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “We also finished a three-week practice program in Dambulla, which went off very well. So what we’re trying to do is go through the process and give them more challenges in due course.”SLC say the lack of playing time for the women’s team has not been for want of effort. Ashley de Silva, the board CEO, said they had been trying to get a home series against Pakistan since the start of the year but could never figure out the timing.”There was a time that we wanted to get them [Pakistan] down to Sri Lanka, but due to the fact that we were playing so many tournaments, we couldn’t create so many bubbles at the same time,” he said. “We were also having problem with the resources; we couldn’t find the necessary amount of doctors to handle so many bubbles.”We were going to host them here, but then we had two tours (for the men’s side) with the South African team and then the Indian team. On top of that there were bubbles and training for some other teams as well, such as the A team. So we couldn’t find the resources to handle so many bubbles.”But we were on the lookout for a window. Now that the window has opened up, and they invited us, we jumped at the idea.”The SLC had announced a four-team 50-over women’s invitational tournament set for October, but that is unlikely to happen now, with the turnaround between the team’s return from Pakistan and their flying out again to Zimbabwe on November 15, a little over two weeks.

INEOS believe Eddie Howe is the manager to nurture Man Utd’s young stars

Erik ten Hag knows he needs to get results against Porto and Aston Villa this week or he could face the sack, and if he does, Manchester United have identified a potential manager who could help their youngsters grow, according to a new report.

Ratcliffe and Ashworth push Man Utd towards "incredible" £100m Eriksen replacement

Man Utd are looking to revamp their midfield once again in 2025.

1 ByBrett Worthington Oct 2, 2024 Man Utd linked with several Erik ten Hag replacements

Defeat to Tottenham Hotspur plus other factors have resulted in Ten Hag coming under serious fire from supporters, pundits, and former players. He now faces two massive clashes against Porto and Villa, where defeats could see him depart in the international break.

This week, United have been linked with potential replacements, with Ruud van Nistelrooy backed to take over from Ten Hag, as he is already at the club working as an assistant manager. A former chief scout of United believes van Nistelrooy would be a “brilliant” fit at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan’s Simeone Inzaghi has emerged as an option for the Red Devils. The Italian is said to be under consideration should a change in the dugout occur, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe will discuss it with the Glazers, sporting director Dan Ashworth and chief executive Omar Berrada before deciding on his next move.

INEOS identify new target who can nurture Man Utd's youngsters

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have placed Eddie Howe on their four-man managerial list should they decide to sack ten Hag. Ratcliffe is keen to appoint a British manager should a change need to be made, and he wants the “best of the British” at the club.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

The report states that discussions are underway about who could replace Ten Hag, and Newcastle United’s Howe, along with Graham Potter, who is currently unemployed, are the leading candidates at this stage. It goes on to add that Gareth Southgate and Inzaghi are also admired by the Premier League side.

Howe is said to be well-regarded at United, and Ashworth now being at Old Trafford could also play a part in him moving to the club, given that he is said to have a “fractious” relationship with the Newcastle board. That relationship is said to have made United aware, but there remains caution when it comes to Howe, as he is among the favourites for the England job himself.

From an INEOS perspective, Howe is viewed as the manager who could “nurture” some of United’s most exciting young talents, while his experience in the Premier League with the Magpies also gives him an edge. However, getting the Englishman out of St. James’ Park would cost a lot, and Newcastle are likely to demand a hefty fee to release him from his contract just like they did with Ashworth.

Pakistan, West Indies look to tune up ahead of Women's World Cup Qualifiers

Designated captain Javeria Khan, senior player Nida Dar unavailable for series opener

Annesha Ghosh07-Nov-2021Designated captain Javeria Khan, pacer Diana Baig and spin-bowling allrounder Nida Dar has been ruled out of Pakistan’s first ODI against West Indies scheduled for Monday, hindering their preparations ahead of the 2022 ODI World Cup global Qualifier slated to take place in Zimbabwe from November 21.In Javeria’s absence, Sidra Nawaz has been named stand-in captain for the opening ODI of the three-match bilateral series which will be held in its entirety at the National Stadium in Karachi. Pakistan head coach David Hemp put Javeria and Baig’s unavailability down to fitness concerns, saying the duo are not “not quite right” yet though they, along with top-order batter Omaima Sohail “came out of isolation a couple of days ago” after a Covid-19 outbreak in their original 18-member squad forced six players into isolation.According to Hemp, all three players trained with the extended squad on Sunday morning. While Sohail was named in the 12-member squad for Monday’s fixture, Javeria and Baig will miss out along with Dar, who exited the bubble a few days ago following her father’s passing.”As you are aware, we have been hampered by a Covid outbreak cumulatively in our camp from October 22,” Hemp said on Sunday during a virtual press conference. “We still have three players that will return to us over the next three to four days. Today (Sunday) we got three players back into the group, so we now have an extended group but we’re still three players short. We are also short of Nida Dar. Our condolences go to Nida and her family. Unfortunately, her father passed away a few days ago.”Fixtures (All matches start at 10am local time)

1st ODI: November 8 at National Stadium

2nd ODI November 11 at National Stadium

3rd ODI: November 14 at National Stadium

Despite the trio’s absence, and the unavailability of Bismah Maroof, who is on maternity leave, Hemp, who was appointed Pakistan’s coach in October 2020, backed the home team to come good against West Indies. This series will be his first home assignment.”We have Sidra Amin, Iram Javed, Ayesha Zafar and Aliya Riaz,” he said. “In the top six, we have players that are capable and performing. This [series] is a great opportunity for them.”

West Indies beat Pakistan 3-2 the last time the two teams squared off in a bilateral ODI series in the Caribbean in July-July. Pakistan won the last two matches of that series. Hemp hopes several members of Pakistan’s batting department will look to build on their performances from the Caribbean tour.”Muneeba, she got herself in most of those innings [in West Indies],” he said. “She was disappointed not to go on and get to 60, 70 or even a hundred. Omaima did manage to get through the 30-run mark and a couple of 60s. There has been some progress there.”Stafanie Taylor missed the previous tour to Pakistan in 2019 due to security concerns•IDI via Getty ImagesThe series – Pakistan’s first home assignment since November 2019 – also marks the return of captain Stafanie Taylor to the West Indies side. She had missed the T20I series against South Africa in Antigua in August-September after being identified as a primary contact of a Covid-19 case in Jamaica, which required her to serve a period of isolation. Now she returns to tour Pakistan after having opted out of the previous tour to the country February 2019 due to security concerns.”It was really disappointing not being in the last ODI series [against South Africa]. I had to take some personal leave of absence,” she said on the even of the series opener. “But I’m back and it’s really good to be back. In Pakistan it’s my first time being here and it’s been good so far.”It seems obvious that we struggled against South Africa. We had some time to go back and reflect on things that we needed to improve our game,” she said. “We were fortunate enough to have a few weeks’ camp in Antigua to rectify some of those errors. So yeah, hopefully, you know, starting tomorrow (Monday), something new.”We are using these games to get the preparation going for the qualifiers, but not looking too far ahead. We definitely want to take away winnings, of course. So not just this practice, but also for us personally, to get some runs and wickets under our belt, and I think looking at not just the qualifiers but also for [the] World Cup [proper next year]. You never know, probably Pakistan again. So, it’s good preparation for us moving forward.”Women’s cricket is set to return to the National Stadium after 15 years•Getty ImagesThe series also marks the return of international women’s cricket to the National Stadium nearly 16 years after Pakistan last played at the venue in January 2006. Back then, Karachi hosted the Asia Cup during which the home team, India, and Sri Lanka played at Karachi Gymkhana and National Stadium.Spectators up to 50% capacity will be allowed for each of the three matches, though only those with invites – strictly colleges and schools – can attend the first two games. The ground will be open to the general public for the third fixture.West Indies served a three-day quarantine upon landing in Karachi on November 1 and had their first training session on November 5. After the series, which ends on November 14, both teams will travel to Zimbabwe where they will be among the 10 teams vying to secure one of three places for the World Cup to be played in New Zealand in March-April next year.Pakistan squad for first ODI: Aliya Riaz, Sidra Nawaz (captain and wicketkeeper), Anam Amin, Ayesha Zafar, Fatima Sana, Iram Javed, Kainat Imtiaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra AminWest Indies squad for Pakistan tour and World Cup Qualifier: Stafanie Taylor (capt), Anisa Mohammed (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Shemaine Campbelle (wk), Shamilia Connell, Deandra Dottin, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Qiana Joseph, Kycia Knight, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Chedean Nation, Shakera Selman, Rashada Williams; Reserves: Cherry Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Karishma Ramharack

Man City shortlist "amazing" Raphinha with Barca reluctantly open to sale

Manchester City have shortlisted Barcelona’s Raphinha as a potential transfer target but face stiff competition, according to a new report. The Blues had a rather quiet summer transfer window, but that may have been in preparation for a busy January or 2025 summer transfer window.

Wolves fans spot new Chris Kavanagh mistake before Man City's goal (Video)

Wolves fans will be even more furious with Sunday’s defeat to Man City after seeing this incident.

Pep Guardiola’s side is going to have a firm focus on the upcoming games, but there is news away from the football that may have some supporters interested. The Blues appear to be keeping a close eye on potential transfer targets, as City are showing an interest in Facundo Buonanotte.

The Blues are not the only side interested in the Brighton player, who is currently out on loan at Leicester City, as Liverpool are also keeping an eye on the Argentine. Buonanotte has been rather impressive for the Foxes, and there is a possibility he could leave Brighton next summer, but only if they get an offer of around £25 million, which is a fee that both City and Liverpool are willing to pay.

Brighton midfielder Facundo Buonanotte.

Away from transfers, the future of Guardiola is another hot topic at the Etihad, and while they will be doing everything they can to extend his stay beyond this season, they also appear to be lining up potential replacements. Former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi is a potential candidate to replace Guardiola should he decide to leave. The Italian took over at French side Marseille in the summer and has made an impressive start, so much so that he is being linked to replacing one of the best managers the game has seen.

While City keep an eye on Buonanotte at Leicester, the Blues also have their eye on a Brazilian playing at Guardiola’s former club.

Latest on Man City links to "amazing" Raphinha

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City have shortlisted Barcelona’s Raphinha as a target but will face competition for his signature. The 27-year-old, who has been labelled as “amazing” by writer Ben Mattinson in the past, has been at Barça since July 2022, when he joined from Leeds United.

The Brazilian has been a key contributor since joining the Spanish giants, and that hasn’t changed this season, even under Hansi Flick. His performances have put him on the radar of City, with reports claiming that they could look to sign him should Xabi Alonso replace Guardiola as manager.

However, City’s interest in Raphinha has been the case since the club was linked with Alonso. The Blues gathered information on the winger in the summer of 2023 as they looked at a possible replacement for Riyad Mahrez, and he remains a player of interest.

City have followed the Brazilian for over a year and a half now, and he remains on their shortlist, but at this stage he isn’t considered a priority target. For Barça, even though he has been so important to them, they are “reluctantly open” to selling Raphinha as he is one of several “sacrificable” players, as they look to improve their finances.

The Premier League side don’t have the most concrete interest in the player, as that comes from Saudi Arabia and Al-Nassr, as they have continued to keep an eye on him since 2023, when they had an offer turned down.

Diogo Jota confirmed out of Arsenal v Liverpool, two others are late doubts

As Liverpool look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League, they’ll have to do so without one of Arne Slot’s key men against title rivals Arsenal at The Emirates, with two more Reds now late doubts as well.

Liverpool injury news

The Reds’ injury list is slowly beginning to increase in what is a worrying sign for Slot. Already, Alisson Becker and Harvey Elliott find themselves sidelined long-term to particularly open the door for Caoimhin Kelleher to take his opportunity. The Irishman has so far grasped hold of his chance once again and will start against Arsenal hoping to secure Liverpool’s biggest result of the campaign so far.

The injury to Elliott is slightly more frustrating, meanwhile, given how the youngster was yet to really make his mark under Slot before being ruled out. Up against Arsenal though, the Reds will be feeling the full impact of at least one other absentee.

According to Slot, confirmed during his press conference, Diogo Jota will miss the Arsenal game after failing to travel to face RB Leipzig and coming off injured against Chelsea with a rib injury last weekend. There are also question marks over Federico Chiesa and Conor Bradley, who could return to training on Saturday but are unlikely to be fit enough to take full part.

"Cheeky" £24,000-p/w star favours Liverpool move after contract talks stall

He could replace Mohamed Salah…

1 ByTom Cunningham Oct 25, 2024

The Portugal international isn’t exactly unfamiliar with spells on the sidelines, with his struggle for full fitness often leaving fans to wonder what might have been if he could stay fit for the entirety of a campaign. Nonetheless, faced with another injury, Jota will have no choice but to sit out and hand the responsibility to Darwin Nunez in the biggest game of Slot’s tenure so far.

In a game that could reveal whether Liverpool are title pretenders or, indeed, contenders, Nunez must step up in place of his £140,000-a-week teammate.

Jota's incredible record vs Arsenal

When assessing those who can lead the Liverpool line, it is Jota who stands above the rest for his all-round quality. Where Nunez is erratic, Jota is clinical. Where Gakpo is subdued in that particular role, Jota is energised and at the centre of everything good that this Liverpool side does. So without him against Arsenal of all sides, the Reds are likely to suffer a big miss.

What’s more, given that Jota has scored eight goals and assisted another two in 15 games against Arsenal – his best record against a Premier League side – the Gunners will undoubtedly be pleased to see the forward taking his place in the stands rather than within Slot’s frontline.

Liverpool forward Diogo Jota

Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Jota during his legendary tenure, saying via TNT Sports: “He has everything that a Liverpool player in this squad needs. He has the technical skills, he has the physical skills and he is very smart and can learn all the tactical stuff pretty quick.”

The torch, however, now likely falls the way of Nunez to prove himself once and for all under Slot against Arsenal.

Slot could drop Diaz by starting "special" Liverpool ace instead

Isn’t it funny to think that were it not for Nottingham Forest, Liverpool would boast a flawless record across three competitions heading into the third month of the 2024/25 campaign?

Liverpool have won their opening game in the Champions League, against AC Milan at the San Siro, while also thumping West Ham United at Anfield in the Carabao Cup second round.

Losing on Merseyside against Forest in the Premier League was a shock, like being thrown into a blizzard having lounged on a Caribbean beach. Still, Arne Slot’s Reds are flying, and have won all five of their other top-flight matches, thus perching atop the table six games in.

Now, Bologna travel to Liverpool in the second game of the Champions League. The Italians drew 0-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk in their opener but will face a different beast later today.

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot

Let’s not forget that Liverpool lost their last home fixture in European competition – and against Serie A opposition too. Slot will need to be wary.

Despite this, he should probably consider dropping Luis Diaz, imperious as he has been this season.

Why Slot should drop Luis Diaz

Liverpool resisted caving into the sugar rush that would have come with signing Anthony Gordon this summer, offered as they were to sign the Newcastle United star amid PSR concerns.

What would be the point? Diaz might not have hit the degree of goalscoring success desired last season but he certainly produced excellent performances.

Moreover, he looks to be a factory-build fit for a ‘Slot system’, ranking among the top 4% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for pass completion and the top 10% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref, emphasising his technical skill.

As the table below shows you, though his goalscoring numbers have shot up, he’s not really raised the underlying metrics, which speaks volumes of his importance within the starting line-up.

He’s scored five goals from six Premier League matches, which is quite a thing given that Diaz only bagged eight across the entirety of last season, 37 fixtures played. He’s been more effective with his time, more economical in his offensive movements.

He didn’t, however, produce his finest performance against Wolves last time out, blanking and failing to offer all that much in attack for Slot’s side, which failed to really get going but still managed to claim a much-needed victory.

Luis Diaz for Liverpool

Indeed, as per Sofascore, the 27-year-old lost 84% of his contested duels, ceded possession ten times and failed to complete his one attempted dribble, also being dribbled past twice and taking just one blocked shot.

It was a performance that sat on more middling ground, with The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle awarding the Colombian a 6/10 match rating, acknowledging his threat on the left flank but admitting that he ’caused panic’ for the travelling side after a couple of iffy moments in the defensive third.

Diaz has spoken of his adoration of his new head coach and is showcasing his new-found love on the pitch. However, he must not be unleashed across every single one of Liverpool’s matches, lest he suffer a damaging injury.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The best replacement for Diaz at Liverpool

Luckily, Liverpool aren’t overly reliant on Diaz, who has been one of the club’s best players over the first few months but, thankfully, competes with the brilliant Cody Gakpo for a starting berth.

Slot’s found a neat way of doing things on the left side of his frontline. It’s quite simple, really: Diaz operates on Premier League days, while Gakpo takes the reins during midweek competitions.

Liverpool players congratulate Cody Gakpo

That’s how things have been carried out thus far, and though it won’t remain that way throughout the campaign and beyond, Liverpool are reaping the rewards of owning two talented wingers jostling for top spot.

Diaz has started every Premier League match, whereas Gakpo – who was kailed for his “special skill set” by Klopp’s former assistant manager Pep Lijnders – has yet to play from the outset in the top flight and has instead done so against West Ham and Milan. He’s been one of the best players on the pitch on both occasions and now deserves another shot.

Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa for Liverpool

The Netherlands international differs from Diaz in that he’s a little more dynamic and less of a touchline winger than Diaz, who, albeit, is proving that claim wrong by performing with a high goal output this year. It’s a testament to Slot’s system and its implementation that both players have hit the ground running.

Klopp, with no disrespect, didn’t figure out the best way to use Gakpo, who is so clearly, in hindsight, an out-and-out wide forward, where his pace and power and potency meld together to the greatest effect. Last term, he featured on the left across just 12 of his 53 outings, which points toward a degree of positional mismanagement.

The synergy must continue to be built up, and that’s talking about the Liverpool squad as a whole, not just Slot’s preferred 11 in the Premier League.

Diaz is in red-hot form and thus is unlikely to lose his starting berth any time soon, but the games come thick and fast for Liverpool and rotation is necessary across different competitions.

Slot’s already found a formula that’s bearing fruits for his team, and with Diaz placed on the bench for this one, Gakpo will have his chance to shine and deepen the bond that’s blossoming over on Merseyside.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. international Brendan Aaronson sparked a flurry of goals for Leeds as they won 7-0 over Cardiff in the English Championship.

Aaronson scored to put Leeds ahead less than six minutes into Saturday's match. The American was on the receiving end of a squared pass from Dan James, who had gotten around Cardiff goalkeeper Jak Alnwick. Aaronson made no mistake with the finish, picking his spot to net his eighth goal of the season in league play.

Aaronson was joined on the scoresheet by James, Manor Solomon, Joel Piroe, Wilfried Gnonto, and Mateo Joseph, with the American ultimately being removed in the 71st minute with the game well and truly out of hand.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Back in November, GOAL sat down with Aaronson to discuss his goals for the season, and he laid out a very specific one: "15 goals, 15 assists".

He has some work to do on the assist portion of that, having registered just two this season, but he is certainly making his mark in the goalscoring department. With his eight goals this season, Aaronson has now set a new career high, surpassing the seven he scored in all competitions for Red Bull Salzburg back in 2020-21.

That goal, he said, would hopefully change the perception of him while proving that he can be a legitimate attacking threat for both club and country.

"I want to be outside of that box," he said. "I'm not just a runner. I'm not just a guy that's pressing all the time. I'll show that, of course, but I think I'm also more than that, you know? I think I'm a guy that brings other things to the pitch and, yeah, I just wish people could see that more."
