Sunderland have received a big injury boost regarding a “really sharp” player ahead of their Championship clash with Norwich City this weekend.
Latest Sunderland news
The Black Cats are back in action on Saturday afternoon, welcoming the Canaries to the Stadium of Light for an important clash near the top of the table.
Regis Le Bris’ side sit fourth in the Championship heading into the weekend action, still only five points adrift of current leaders Sheffield United, thanks in part to their impressive 3-2 win away to Swansea City last time around.
Sunderland’s form has dipped a little in recent weeks, having topped the table earlier in the campaign, so it’s now a case of staying in the mix and not allowing some injury problems to derail them.
The Black Cats have had to make do without various influential players throughout the campaign, while Jobe Bellingham also served a suspension after his red card against Queens Park Rangers, but a positive update regarding one player has now emerged.
Sunderland receive injury boost
Speaking ahead of the visit of Norwich on Saturday [via The Sunderland Echo], Le Bris confirmed that Sunderland attacker Ian Poveda is fit enough to play a part in matches again, having overcome a longstanding injury issue:
“Sometimes you just need time to find the connection with the project and club. Ian is now in a really good place. He’s not ready to play a full game but can be a sub and help us in short spells in games.”
Leeds forward Ian Poveda.
This is great news for Sunderland, with Poveda’s time at the club not gaining any momentum at all yet, having completed a permanent transfer to the Stadium of Light during the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old is yet to start in the Championship this season, making just three appearances totalling 44 minutes, but the hope is that he is now ready to kick on. This is a player who excelled for Leeds in a Premier League clash with Manchester City back in 2020, with Danny Mills saying of him:
“I thought he was superb when he came on. He looked really sharp, full of energy and kept the ball really well. He cause a lot of problems for Mendy in the second-half and I think that is why Pep Guardiola decided to make the change.”
Admittedly, it doesn’t feel like Poveda is going to play a huge role for Sunderland for the time being, with Le Bris easing him back into the fold rather than giving him too many minutes, but having him as a strong option is a huge boost.

At 24, this is now an important point in Poveda’s career, with the winger having a sporadic time of things, being loaned out to Sheffield Wednesday from Leeds last season, for example.
He now needs to kick on and become a genuinely influential figure for Sunderland, playing a positive role in getting them back into the Premier League.
Leicester City are now plotting their January transfer window, and have identified two key deals as they look to secure their Premier League survival under Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Leicester City fighting relegation
After a promising start to the season, a slump in form has left Leicester City once again on the cusp of the relegation zone.
Replacing Steve Cooper with Ruud Van Nistelrooy, the Foxes are now 17th in the Premier League and have conceded seven in their last two games, falling to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of relegation rivals Wolves in their most recent outing.
So far, Van Nistelrooy has managed just one win from his four games in charge, conceding 10 goals in that time and leaving the Foxes with the second-worst goal difference in the division.

After the defeat, Van Nistelrooy bemoaned the individual errors that cost his side.
“The players were focused and committed today. They wanted to do well, but it [the defeat] happened. We, and the players, are frustrated and disappointed but it is now about reflecting to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
“Last week we spoke about set-pieces, today we are talking about miscommunication and individual mistakes. In the Premier League, you have to be spot on against everyone, in all areas of the game.”
But January business feels essential for Leicester if they are to have any chance of survival, especially following the injury to Abdul Fatawu. Now, they have seemingly put their plans in place.
Leicester identify priority January deals
That is according to Football Insider, who report that the Foxes have shortlisted two key positions as in need of reinforcements in January.
They claim that Van Nistelrooy and co “will target a new striker and centre-back as their priorities” in the winter window. Though Jamie Vardy has found the net six times this season, the club “are keen to bring in more help for the legendary forward”, with Jordan Ayew having failed to help lighten the burden on his shoulders.

Meanwhile, there is also concern at the back, where Wout Faes, Conor Coady and Jannik Vestergaard have all failed to impress at the King Power so far this season, and the 3-0 loss to Wolves left the Foxes with the second worst defence in the league.
Leicester defender Jannik Vestergaard.
That is despite goalkeeper Mads Hermansen having kept out a league-high 5.8 more goals than expected goals suggests he should have, 2.5 more than any other goalkeeper in the top flight, showing that there is a clear problem in front of him at Leicester.
A new centre-back feels vital at the King Power, and the report claims that “club chiefs have recognised the need for an upgrade” if they are to have any chance of remaining a Premier League side for the 2025/26 Premier League season.
January feels like another key transfer window for the Foxes, and one that they can ill afford to get wrong as they look to secure survival, with the sides around them likely to shell out on new signings, and Leicester in danger of being left behind.
World-class performances from Rodman and Thompson, goalkeeping debut by Tullis-Joyce highlight USWNT victory
LOS ANGELES – Before the second largest-crowd in the L.A. area ever to watch a U.S. women’s national team game – 32,303 turned out for the first women's sporting event at SoFi Stadium – Emma Hayes' squad defeated Brazil 2-0 Saturday night in a rematch of the 2024 Olympics final.
The USWNT didn't waste much time, with Trinity Rodman reminding everyone how much she was missed – not to mention her ability to score. Just five minutes into the first half, two USWNT hometown heroes showed out, with Alyssa Thompson dribbling centrally, drawing in Brazil's backline and allowing Rodman to subtly sneak in behind to receive a perfectly paced slip ball.
While Thompson and Rodman were obvious standouts, so too was Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who made her first international start in goal for the United States. She was confident, poised and made crucial saves to earn the shutout.
Since the 2024 Olympics, the USWNT have experienced many changes. From the retirement of Alyssa Naeher to Sophia Wilson and Mallory Swanson not being in uniform since Paris, coach Emma Hayes has been tasked with fielding a different squad.
When the USWNT played in the SheBelieves Cup in February, there were new faces on the pitch – and it was a story of younger talent getting minutes. Saturday's match against Brazil was a balanced roster of older and newer, with players such as Rodman back in the mix, and the midfield held down by captain Lindsey Heaps next to reigning U.S. Young Female Player of the Year Ally Sentnor.
And in the process, Hayes earned her 16th win as USWNT coach, with just one loss in 19 games.
GOAL takes a look at the winners and losers from the USWNT's 2-0 victory over Brazil.

WINNER: Alyssa Thompson
Alyssa Thompson played like she was right at home, which – as a Los Angeles native – she was. Thompson showed no fear in any of one vs one opportuniies. In the first five minutes, Thompson received the ball on the left wing, dribbled centrally, leaving Brazil on their heels, she saw Trinity Rodman slip through and played a cheeky driven ball into Rodman's stride.
And just like that, the USWNT were on the board, with much thanks to Thompson's driving ability and vision to find the small gaps in Brazil's backline.
"I mean, I love playing in LA," Thompson said after the game. "Being here is amazing for club, and I've never played here [SoFi] or played in LA with the national team. So being able to just feel that comfort from my city and my family and friends, like I just felt like I could be more like me a- nd like I knew what I could do."
While that assist was a highlight, Thompson continued to impress throughout the game, tracking back defensively, taking players on down the wing, and driving centrally when it made sense, which confused the Brazil defenders.
In the 16th minute, Thompson had another highlight-worthy moment when she dribbled centrally and got her foot on the ball for a clean strike far post. Brazil goalkeeper Lorena bobbled it, displaying just how much pace Thompson was able to rocket her shot.

LOSER: Lorena
Lorena is rarely a loser and not even on this night, but the fact that the USWNT got two goals past such an elite goalkeeper puts her in this spot. She made some incredible saves against Thompson, and handled some dynamic runs and dangerous balls in the box.
However, the first goal Brazil gave up was a tough one for Lorena, who almost never gets beat off a simple touch central from a forward. Lorena has been a standout for Kansas City Current this season, and has been the secret to Brazil's defensive prowess since she was named to the senior national team in 2021.
Getty Images
WINNER: Trinity Rodman
Trinity Rodman made her return to the USWNT in absolute style, rocking the pink braids and notching a goal. Her presence has been clearly missed by the USWNT since the Olympics, and Hayes talked about her being back: "Just her whole aura, her whole being… just having her presence and just having Trin back just feels so good for the group."
Her goal was clinical; from the sneaky run that split past the Brazil center-backs to her touch inside to get Lorena to commit – and then use of her outside foot to tap the ball in. After she scored, Rodman continued to put in work, playing one twos on the right side and serving in some dangerous balls into the box.
"I think my main focus for this game, and even in the first five minutes, it was just kind of the timing of my run," she said. "And even a couple times I was offside, I was starting my run a little bit too early, so on that goal, I was waiting for the perfect moment to kind of make that run."
Rodman said she has been looking to get the ball more centrally, something she's also been focused on with the Washington Spirit in the NWSL.

LOSER: Brazil's backline
Brazil had a tough start, especially letting Thompson break through and Rodman sneak in behind. While they held the USWNT strong on many chances, they were sloppy in key moments.
They struggled most defending one vs one, and couldn't seem to quite knock the U.S. off the ball. While their tracking was sound – and positioning as well – their individual battles fell short.
For the next game against the USWNT on Tuesday in San Jose, Brazil will likely look to fine tune some of the defensive tactics to stay closer.
Mark Wood has revealed he is due to undergo a further operation on his troublesome right elbow this week, and will miss the rest of the English summer. He remains hopeful of making the T20 World Cup in Australia which begins in the middle of October.Wood has been out since March after sustaining the injury in the first Test of the tour of West Indies. An operation at the end of that month removed a bone that was blocking the joint, preventing his right arm from straightening.Originally it was hoped that Wood, 32, would return within three months, and his recovery began well until he began encountering further issues in the area. The hope from the ECB and Durham medical teams was that the pain was just part of the rehabilitation process and would eventually subside. He was originally pencilled in for Durham’s Vitality Blast game against Notts Outlaws at Trent Bridge on July 1 before he was taken out of consideration in case the elbow had a bad reaction. Following a few sessions at full pace in the Chester-le-Street nets at the end of last week, he turned out for his home club, Ashington Cricket Club, on Saturday and took five wickets against Lanchester Cricket Club.Unfortunately, Wood woke up on Sunday unable to straighten his arm again and, with time running out to be fit for the T20 World Cup, the decision was made to operate again later this week.Related

Mark Wood admits return from elbow surgery is 'slow progress'
“It’s not going well actually,” Wood told Test Match Special during Tuesday’s first ODI against South Africa. “I’m off again for probably more surgery on Saturday. I played a club game to see what it was like when I tested it out, so unfortunately it’s not pulled up well. To be ready for the World Cup, I’m going to have to get that done.”I’ve been bowling for the last two or three weeks in the nets, top speed also off my full run-up. But it just seems to keep deteriorating. When I played that club game it was an indication in a match of how does it actually feel. The next day… I can straighten my left arm fully, but my right arm is still sort of bent a little bit.”The setback is another blow to England’s fast bowling stocks, with Jofra Archer’s recovery from a stress fracture of his back still uncertain. Olly Stone, the other 90-plus mph option, has been working his way back in the Blast with Birmingham Bears.Wood remains hopeful of making it to Australia, even if he is unsure of the exact issue. The need to get to the heart of the problem stems from the fact that each strong session would require a period of recovery, making back-to-back sessions impossible.”It’s not so much at the time,” Wood said. “It’s more the day after. If I had to back it up or if I was in the tournament, for example, it would knock me back four or five games, or days.”That’s why it’s crunch week this week. That’s why I’ve been building it up so much. But this week it needed a decision, so that’s why I played the club cricket. Unfortunately it hasn’t been good. The frustration for me is I’ve done everything everyone has asked. It’s just not giving me a break.”

Jaffer: Shikhar Dhawan needs to come good
Big pictureThe last time India came away from a multi-format tour of Australia, England, New Zealand or South Africa without a series loss in any format was in 2018-19 in Australia. To find the next-most-recent instance, one will have to go all the way back to 1986, when India drew their ODI series in England 1-1, and won the Test series 2-0.On Sunday, India will have an opportunity to add to that list. Yes, they lost the Edgbaston Test on this trip but the Test series, which began last year, ended at 2-2. Then they clinched the T20I series 2-1 with their new, attacking approach. While England may not be aware of India’s touring record, they, and their captain Jos Buttler, will not want to start the post-Eoin-Morgan era with defeats in both white-ball series, that too at home. Both teams, however, need to do better with the bat. In the first ODI, England were bundled out for 110. In the second, India only managed 146 in a chase of 247. One strategy could be to see out the new ball – in both games, the eventual losing team all but lost the match in the first ten overs of their innings. Another thing that should provide some relief to the batters is the fact that Old Trafford, the venue for the third ODI, has seen some high totals in the recent past.Form guideEngland WLWWW (last five completed ODIs, most recent first) India LWWWWJason Roy’s form will be a concern for England•AFP/Getty ImagesIn the spotlightJason Roy epitomised England’s aggressive approach under Morgan. While he has continued to show the intent to go hard from the get-go, the results have been missing. With England’s white-ball bench strength arguably at its all-time peak, Roy will know he needs an impactful knock sooner rather than later.Virat Kohli will always be in the spotlight – whether he is scoring runs, not scoring runs, or replying to Babar Azam on Twitter. But the focus will also be on Shikhar Dhawan, who scored an unbeaten 31 at The Oval but consumed 54 balls while doing so and looked less than convincing. In the second ODI at Lord’s, he was out for 9 off 26 balls. He was been named the ODI captain for the upcoming tour of the West Indies, but at 36, his long-term place in the side could be in danger if his form doesn’t improve.Team newsEngland have released Harry Brook, Phil Salt and Matt Parkinson for the T20 Blast Finals Day. While the trio will be back in Manchester for the ODI, they are unlikely to play. Leeds United’s transfer business has yet to take off in January, but it’s to be expected with many in and around the club anticipating a quiet window this month.
Outgoings have started to gradually take place at Elland Road, with Charlie Crew joining League Two Doncaster Rovers, alongside Joe Gelhardt, who’s joining Hull City on loan for the remainder of the season.
The moves for the aforementioned pair are vital, handing them valuable first-team minutes to continue their development, and opening the door to new arrivals to provide added quality and depth.
Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.
Various names such as Bali Mumba have surfaced in recent days, but as of yet, no progression has been made on any potential incomings for Daniel Farke.
However, that being said, one name continues to be mentioned with a move to Yorkshire this month, with the player now wanting to leave his current side for a new challenge.
Leeds remain in the race for player who wants to leave
According to German outlet BILD, Leeds are still monitoring the progress of Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi over a potential move this window.
The 28-year-old Swiss defender has previously been touted as an option for Farke’s side, but the latest update could give them a potential boost in their pursuit.
Wolves transfer target Nico Elvedi
The report states that Elvedi would want a move to England in the near future, with his current side in the market for a new central defender by the end of the month. Previously valued at around £8m, this could be a rather big deal for any second-tier side to complete.
Such links could provide the Whites an edge in their hunt for reinforcements, with the international star undoubtedly bolstering the club’s current promotion ambitions.
Transfer Focus
Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
It would also allow the hierarchy to complete a deal for a player who may be able to follow in the footsteps of a former fan-favourite should he complete a move to Elland Road.
Why Elvedi could be Leeds’ next Georginio Rutter
French attacking midfielder Georginio Rutter joined Leeds back in January 2023 for a club-record £35.5m, looking to provide added ammunition in their quest for Premier League survival.
However, he was unable to do so, failing to make a real impact – registering just one assist in his first 11 outings following his big-money transfer to the club.
Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.
The drop-down to the Championship would be the turning point of his career under Farke, starring as the club managed to reach the play-off final – notching a tally of eight goals and 16 assists, forming a deadly partnership with Crysencio Summerville.
Rutter would depart the Whites last summer, with Premier League side Brighton triggering his £40m release clause, allowing the club to make a profit despite his wobbly start to life in England.
The fanbase will always cherish him for his magic moments at Elland Road, with the club having an opportunity to replicate such business with a move for Elvedi.
On the face of it, the comparison may seem far-fetched, but the similarities between the pair, both moving from the Bundesliga in a winter window, could see Farke land a player who could play a pivotal role in their title ambitions in the coming months.
The Swiss star, who’s been dubbed “one of the best defenders” by one scout and analyst, has impressed in Germany this campaign, producing numerous defensive figures that would improve the options currently at the manager’s disposal.

Dubbed a “tremendous player” by German football expert Chris Williams, if he were to follow in Rutter’s footsteps and have a similar sort of impact, it would be an unbelievable addition and one that could massively boost Farke’s chances of ending the club’s two-year Premier League exile.

Ross Taylor has opened up about how he and other players have faced racism in New Zealand cricket. In his new autobiography following his retirement from international cricket earlier this year Taylor, who has Samoan heritage on his mother’s side, wrote the game in New Zealand was “a pretty white sport” and that he had experienced racism inside dressing rooms that was likely considered “banter” by those involved.”Cricket in New Zealand is a pretty white sport. For much of my career I’ve been an anomaly, a brown face in a vanilla line-up,” Taylor wrote in an extract published by the . “That has its challenges, many of which aren’t readily apparent to your team-mates or the cricketing public. Given that the Polynesian community is dramatically under-represented in the game, it’s probably no surprise that people sometimes assume I’m Maori or Indian.”In many ways, dressing-room banter is the barometer. A team-mate used to tell me, ‘You’re half a good guy, Ross, but which half is good? You don’t know what I’m referring to.’ I was pretty sure I did. Other players also had to put up with comments that dwelt on their ethnicity.”In all probability, a Pakeha [white New Zealander] listening to those sorts of comments would think, ‘Oh, that’s okay, it’s just a bit of banter.’ But he’s hearing it as white person and it’s not directed at people like him. So, there’s no pushback; no one corrects them. Then the onus falls on the targets.”You wonder if you should pull them up but worry that you’ll create a bigger problem or be accused of playing the race card by inflating harmless banter into racism. It’s easier to develop a thick skin and let it slide, but is that the right thing to do?”Elsewhere, Taylor also wrote about experiences from within the New Zealand team environment that had been racially “insensitive”.An NZC spokesperson told the New Zealand Herald: “NZC deplores racism, is a staunch supporter of the NZ Human Rights Commission’s ‘Give Nothing to Racism’ campaign, and is deeply disappointed Ross has been exposed to this type of behaviour. We’ll definitely reach out to Ross to discuss the matter.”
What an instantaneous impact Vítor Pereira has made at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
When Gary O’Neil was sacked in mid-December, Wolves had just lost four successive Premier League matches, winning only three of their last 26, dating back to early-March.
Thus, few would’ve forecast Pereira’s reign would commence with back-to-back victories, hammering Leicester and then toppling Manchester United on Boxing Day, before earning a credible 2-2 draw with Spurs last Sunday; Jørgen Strand Larsen lashing home a late equaliser from an acute angle in North London.
Wolverhampton Wanderers managerVitorPereirareacts after the match
However, ahead of Monday night’s clash with Nottingham Forest at Molineux, only goal difference is keeping Wolves out of the bottom three, meaning supporters are certainly still concerned.
After this, the Old Gold’s next five league opponents are Newcastle, Chelsea, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Liverpool, hence why Pereira will surely be eager to strengthen his squad in January.
Champions League winner could sign for Wolves
According to reports from Turkish outlet Sabah Spor, Wolves are in talks with the agent of former Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech, to sign him.
Currently with Galatasaray, the report suggests that Ziyech is no longer training, as he seeks to force through a January move, having not even been on the bench for the Süper Lig leaders’ last three matches.
Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech.
Ziyech burst onto the scene during his time with Ajax, a key figure as they reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019, earning him a £33.6m move to Chelsea, with whom he won the Champions League, before being cast aside following the change in ownership.
The Moroccan then moved to Galatasaray in August 2023 for a fee of around £3m, most notably scoring two free-kicks in the same game as the Turkish giants held Manchester United to a 3-3 draw in the Champions League.
Now, out of favour in İstanbul, starting only three matches so far this season, Ziyech is likely to be available at a cut price. One journalist on the continent claims he will move this month “no doubt”, and Wolves seemingly lead the race to land his signature.

How Hakim Ziyech would improve Wolves
As Sam Dean of the Telegraph documented, Ziyech earned the nickname “the Wizard of Amsterdam” during his time at Ajax, with Goal describing him as “magic”.
Now though, approaching his 32nd birthday, just how good is Ziyech, and how does he compare to Hwang Hee-chan, the player he’d surely be seeking to replace in the front three, alongside Matheus Cunha and Jørgen Strand Larsen?

As outlined in the table, Hwang and Ziyech are very different players.
The South Korean is a goal-scoring wide-forward, netting in Wolves’ last two Premier League matches against Man United and then Tottenham.
In contrast, Ziyech is a creator, accumulating 81 assists during his time at Ajax, as well as 13 for Chelsea, underlined by his numbers when it comes to both passes and crosses into the penalty area.
Considering Wolves have the fourth-lowest xG figure of any team in the Premier League this season (19.4), a creator-in-chief could be just what Pereira’s team require this month, underlining why Ziyech could be both an opportunistic but also an astute edition in their battle against the drop.
