It's Raza's day out with bat and ball as Zimbabwe trump Ireland

The allrounder hit 82 in 48 and picked up a wicket, and the Zimbabwe bowlers did their bit, to script a 31-run win

Takeaways: Is batting first the way to go at the T20 World Cup?

Zimbabwe re-announced themselves on the big stage with a win over Ireland in their first major tournament appearance since 2016. It was also Zimbabwe’s first World Cup win over Ireland in four meetings across the 50- and 20-over formats, and puts them second on the Group B table behind Scotland, who beat West Indies earlier in the day.In chilly conditions and on a surface with extra bounce, Zimbabwe were in early trouble on 39 for 3 inside the powerplay, but recovered to 79 for 4 at the halfway stage. Sikandar Raza took the reins from there on, and powered his way to his sixth T20I half-century while also sharing in a 58-run fifth-wicket stand with Milton Shumba.Raza went on to add 33 from 17 balls with No. 9 Luke Jongwe at the death to give the bowlers a decent total to defend. He took on the Ireland spinners, as Simi Singh and Gareth Delaney conceded 52 runs in the five overs they combined to bowl. However, the pace bowlers weren’t spared by Zimbabwe either, as Curtis Campher and Mark Adair’s seven overs cost 68, with only left-armer Josh Little posing a real threat. It turned out to be a good day for left-arm seamers, as Richard Ngarava made the first two incisions into Ireland’s line-up. But Blessing Muzarabani also joined the fun, as Ireland were reduced to 33 for 4 in the powerplay. George Dockrell and Campher put up some resistance with a 42-run fifth-wicket partnership, but once they were separated – by Raza! – Zimbabwe’s path to victory was clear.Though Zimbabwe were untidy at the end by dropping two catches and allowing Ireland’s tail to wag, their bowlers will be pleased with their returns. Wickets were shared, with seven falling to the quicks and two to the spinners. Sean Williams, who became the player with the longest T20I career of 15 years and 323 days, finished with 1 for 22.Sikandar Raza held Zimbabwe’s innings together with a 48-ball 82•ICC/Getty ImagesIreland’s short-ball strategy
Ireland’s fast bowlers clearly had a plan, which seemed to be to bowl short early on, and they stuck to it almost to perfection. Collectively, they only delivered one full delivery in the first five overs while testing Zimbabwe’s top four with pace, bounce and seam movement.Regis Chakabva was greeted with a ball that kissed his shoulder and cramped him for room, even as it nipped back. The ball eventually caught the shoulder of his bat on its way through to Lorcan Tucker. Wessly Madhevere faced more of the same in the opening over, and top-edged the third delivery he faced from Tucker for four.He should have been out in the next over when he pulled Mark Adair to Campher at deep square but Campher mistimed his jump and the ball went through his hands. Madhevere made the most of his let-off, rocked back and rolled his wrists to bring out the pull and the whip through midwicket. However, he tried to take on one short ball too many when he picked out Gareth Delany at deep backward square to give Little a second wicket in his opening spell. Zimbabwe also lost Craig Ervine to offspinner Simi Singh in the powerplay.Catching in tandem
Williams and Raza steadied and then accelerated Zimbabwe’s innings with a fourth-wicket stand of 42, which was dominated by Raza. Williams had just joined the party with a slog sweep off Simi that went over the short-square boundary for six. But when he tried to repeat it, he found an Ireland pair that was stationed on the rope with good awareness. Adair ran towards long-on to get underneath it but knew his left foot was close to the boundary, so he lobbed the ball back to Harry Tector, who had made his way in from deep midwicket. Adair timed his throw back to perfection as his momentum carried him over the rope, and Tector made sure he was there at exactly the right time.Stunning Sikandar – Part 1
What a year Raza is having. Since July 2022, he has scored five T20I fifties in nine innings, compared with the one fifty in 47 innings before that. Against Ireland, not only did Raza almost single-handedly ensure Zimbabwe got a solid total, he did so with complete authority over an attack who were dead-set on trying to bounce Zimbabwe out and too often got that tactic wrong.Raza hit 54 of his 82 runs on the leg side, with 39 off those coming off the pull shot. He hit the ball high and far, and demonstrated a technique that is not always present in a Zimbabwean line-up. Raza’s was the third-highest score by any batter batting at No. 5 or lower in T20Is.Blessing Muzarabani helped Zimbabwe reduce Ireland to 23 for 4 inside the powerplay•ICC via Getty ImagesNgarava, Zimbabwe count their Blessing(s)
Unlike Ireland’s quicks, Zimbabwe’s went fuller, and let the extra bounce and swing do some of the work for them and ripped through Ireland’s top order in the first four overs. Ngarava struck first when Paul Stirling inside-edged on to his leg stump. Two overs later, Tucker, who had successfully scooped Tendai Chatara over short fine-leg, shuffled across his stumps to sweep but was late on the stroke and was bowled. From the other end, Zimbabwe introduced their two-metre tall quick Muzarabani, who delivered a Test-match like delivery on a good length on fourth stump, which Tector edged to Ervine at slip. Three balls later, Andy Balbirnie went in exactly the same way although the ball was slightly short of length.Ireland were 23 for 4 after four overs and 33 for 4 at the end of the powerplay, with the required rate already over ten.Stunning Sikandar – Part 2
Why contribute in one discipline when you can in two, especially after you have significantly changed the way you execute one of them? That must have been idea for Raza, complete with a new, Sunil Narine-esque action, when he was given the ball in the tenth over, with Dockrell looking dangerous.Dockrell was on 24 off 18 balls and it was Raza’s job to slow things down. He did one better and foxed Dockrell with a delivery that came out of the front of his hand, snuck under the toe end of the bat and yorked the batter. If that wasn’t enough, Raza also took the catch when the ninth wicket fell to cap off a spectacular all-round performance.

After Jackson injury: Chelsea must rue selling "outstanding" star for £3m

Chelsea were flying high at the start of this campaign, scoring for fun, creating plenty of chances and finishing teams off. However, things haven’t been as plain sailing in the past few months.

Enzo Maresca’s side have become overly reliant on goals from three main sources, with Cole Palmer scoring 14 Premier League goals, Nicolas Jackson scoring nine Premier League goals and Noni Madueke scoring seven in the league.

Now, things are about to get even worse for the Blues, as one of their top three scorers is set to be sidelined for a significant period of time, which could see Maresca scrambling for a solution.

The latest on Nicolas Jackson's injury

The Telegraph has confirmed that Jackson will now be out until at least the end of March, possibly the beginning of April.

This comes after he sustained an injury against West Ham in Chelsea’s last Premier League fixture, which will leave Maresca without a natural number nine, as Marc Guiu is also set to be out for a few weeks.

The 23-year-old had a brilliant start to the season, scoring eight goals in the opening 13 Premier League games, and also providing three assists in that time frame.

However, since then, Jackson has only managed to score one goal and provide two assists in the last ten matches.

Now without Jackson and Guiu, Maresca is likely to have to play either Christopher Nkunku or Cole Palmer as a striker (not their natural positions) in order to deal with their lack of a striker, but perhaps their answer was there all along, being sold at the wrong time.

The Cobham star who could have replaced Jackson

Back in 2017, Dominic Solanke’s contract expired at Chelsea, allowing him to join Liverpool, only having to pay £3m as compensation (decided by a tribunal).

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Since then, the English striker has gone on to play for Liverpool, Bournemouth and now Tottenham, really starting to come into his own at the age of 27.

Solanke only ever made one appearance for the Chelsea senior side, but his 77 goals in 216 games for Bournemouth truly catapulted his career, earning him a huge £65m move to Tottenham in the summer.

Solanke and Jackson are compared as “similar players” by FBref, which shows in their underlying metrics too. Both players rank closely in their output provided per 90, both looking to link play and provide for others as well as themselves.

Ange Postecoglou has praised Solanke, labelling him “outstanding” already this season, and his ability to work hard from the front, contest duels in and around the box and finish at a clinical level is exactly why he is so well suited to the Premier League.

Dominic Solanke scores for Bournemouth,

Not only is Solanke the exact profile Chelsea are currently missing, but he is also showing exactly why development isn’t always linear, now coming into his prime years and proving he can be a top Premier League striker, one which the Blues would likely appreciate having right about now.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Manchester United, Juventus and France star Paul Pogba is reportedly prioritizing a return to Europe, amid reported interest from MLS side D.C. United.

ESPN reports that the 32-year-old is interested in a future move to MLS, but at the moment, is focused on returning to Europe.

Pogba is of the belief that he can still play at a UEFA Champions League-caliber level, and is aiming to sign with a club competing in the competition. The 2014 FIFA World Cup Young Player of the Tournament believes it will give him the best chance to return to his national team in hopes that manager Didier Deschamps will call his name to represent at the 2026 competition in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

However, the Frenchman is set to consider all offers at the moment, including D.C. United's reported interest.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pogba has not played competitively for over 20 months, since September 2023, after testing positive for DHEA – a banned substance that raises testosterone levels. Playing for Serie A side Juventus at the time when banned, the Italian anti-doping agency banned Pogba for four years. Claiming he unknowingly took the substance, Pogba appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced his suspension to 18 months, and he was cleared to return to play in March of this year.

Juventus and the 32-year-old agreed to a contract termination last November, making him a free agent. He is now available to sign for whomever he wishes, as long as the two parties come to an agreement.

The report added that in March of this year, Pogba was the subject of interest from both Fiorentina and Marseille, as well as multiple clubs in Spain. He reportedly rejected approaches from Brazil and Saudi Arabia.

ESPN added in its reporting that Pogba, who owns a home in Miami and has been living there since November, has held talks with David Beckham – co-owner of Inter Miami.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The last time Pogba played a full 90 minutes of competitive action at the senior level was three years ago for Manchester United in a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.

'The best player in the world is French' – Marcus Thuram risks winding up Lamine Yamal as he downplays Barcelona star's heroics vs Inter & claims TWO fellow countrymen are better than him

Marcus Thuram believes that two fellow Frenchmen are better than Lamine Yamal despite his incredible performance in the 3-3 draw with Inter.

French forward Thuram has raised eyebrows with a bold claim that the best player in the world hails from France, subtly downplaying the rising stardom of Barcelona sensation Yamal. Speaking after the epic clash with Inter on Wednesday, which ended in a 3-3 draw, Thuram appeared unimpressed by the young winger’s standout performance, instead throwing his support behind two of his compatriots – Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe – and hailing them as superior talents.

Thuram was asked by after the first leg if Yamal was the best player in the world. "No," said Thuram, before adding: "The best player in the world is French, and the second is too. They are Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe. After the two of them comes Lamine Yamal."

Yamal has been on a record-breaking spree ever since making his breakthrough for Barca in the 2023-24 season aged just 15. On Wednesday, he became the youngest player in Champions League history to find the back of the net in a semi-final, breaking Mbappe's record. Recently, Lionel Messi, who is Yamal's idol, hailed the youngster as "one of the best players in the world", with other pundits, managers, and players have also acknowledged that the La Masia graduate is indeed a generational talent.

Yamal, who may now be more fired up after Thuram's comments, will feature when Barcelona visit San Siro to take on Inter in the return leg on Tuesday, May 6. Before then, it's back to league matters for Barca, who take on Valladolid away from home as they look to extend their four-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of La Liga. Inter, meanwhile, trail Napoli in the Serie A title race by just three points, with the Nerazzurri taking on Verona on May 3.

T20 World Cup scenarios: England, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan cannot afford washouts

Australia have a trickier ride while New Zealand are hot favourites to top Group 1

S Rajesh29-Oct-20221:40

Fleming: Possibly the strongest squad NZ have ever had

New Zealand
New Zealand have pulled clear of the rest of the teams in the group, both in terms of points, and even more so, in terms of net run rate. One more win in their two remaining matches should seal qualification, given their excellent NRR. However, if they lose both games, then several other results will have to go their way for them to qualify with five points.England
The defeat against Ireland could hurt England badly.Rain is forecast in Brisbane on Tuesday for their game against New Zealand – if points are shared in that game, England will finish on a maximum of six points, not what they want since New Zealand (with a much better NRR) would touch six points too, and Australia can get up to seven if they beat both Ireland and Afghanistan. If England grab four points from their last two games, then it is possible that three teams – New Zealand, England and Australia – finish on seven points, bringing NRR into play.Ireland
Ireland’s fortunes rest in their own hands: if their follow the victory against England with wins in their last two games – against heavyweights Australia and New Zealand – then they will qualify for the semi-finals regardless of other results. The problem for them, though, is that they have a 0-5 T20I record against those two teams. For the defending champs, it is a chance to stay in contention of making the semis at their home World Cup•Associated Press

Australia
Australia’s two remaining games are against the two new Full Members – Ireland and Afghanistan. Victory in both will lift them to seven points, but Australia will also want to undo the damage caused by the 89-run loss in their tournament opener against New Zealand. The margin of that defeat could hurt them if it comes down to NRR.Sri Lanka
If Sri Lanka win their last two games, New Zealand lose their last two, and Australia beat Ireland but lose to Afghanistan, then Sri Lanka will top group 1 with six points. However, both Australia and New Zealand will finish on seven points if the scenario doesn’t play out that way. Sri Lanka’s only option, then, is to win their last two and then hope. They might not even get a chance to get to their maximum of six points if the weather forecast holds true for Brisbane on Tuesday, when they are scheduled to play Afghanistan.Afghanistan
Like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan can also top the group – on six points – if they win both their games and if New Zealand lose both of theirs. For a start, though, they will be hoping to play some cricket after their last two games were abandoned without a ball being bowled. A third such match is on the cards given the forecast in Brisbane for Tuesday. If that game is washed out and other results follow a specific pattern, it is possible for all six teams in the group to finish on exactly five points.

Arsenal let star go for £0, now he’s playing "best football of his career"

One of the most impressive aspects of Arsenal’s season so far has been the emergence of several academy players in the first-team under Mikel Arteta.

17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri is one of the young starlets to come through to the senior set-up this term and he registered his first assist in the Premier League with a beautiful cross for Mikel Merino on Saturday.

The England U19 international, who has scored seven goals in all competitions this season, is not the only Hale End star to emerge for Arteta, though.

Left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly had not made a single first-team appearance before the 2024/25 campaign, and has already racked up 21 this term.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's form this season

The 18-year-old defender has beaten off competition from Oleksandr Zinchenko, Kieran Tierney, and Riccardo Calafiori to be the first-choice option at left-back for the Gunners in recent weeks.

He has started eight of his 11 appearances in the Premier League this season, all as a left-back, and recently scored his first senior goal for the club in a huge 5-1 win over Manchester City at The Emirates.

Lewis-Skelly has made a terrific start to life at first-team level and Arteta will, surely, be hoping that the academy graduate can be his first-choice in that position for many more years to come.

The Spanish head coach, however, did once have another academy full-back with potential who he ended up allowing to leave for nothing, in the form of Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

Where Are They Now

He came up from the academy and made 132 appearances in all competitions, the majority of which came as a full-back, before Arteta ruthlessly released him for £0 in the summer of 2023.

Where Ainsley Maitland-Niles is now

The five-cap England international was snapped up by Ligue 1 side Lyon ahead of the 2023/24 campaign and he has made 57 appearances in all competitions for the French side to date.

Maitland-Niles has played 28 times in the current season, mostly as a right-back, and France-based broadcaster Matt Spiro recently claimed that the defender is “playing the best football of his career with Lyon” and should be in with a shot at making the England squad again.

Spiro added that Pierre Sage, the Lyon manager, hailed the full-back’s tactical intelligence and claimed that he does a lot of good work that goes unnoticed on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Maitland-Niles has offered a creative threat whilst also winning defensive duels for his team on a regular basis in Ligue 1 this season.

The 27-year-old star has found his place with Lyon and it appears as though Arteta’s decision to ruthlessly bin the defender in 2023 has worked out for everyone, as the Gunners now have Jurrien Timber and Ben White at right-back Maitland-Niles has hit his stride in France.

Arsenal now make contact for "composed" £50m striker with 20 league goals

The Gunners have made the first move to sign a striker who is the top scorer in his league this season.

ByDominic Lund Feb 16, 2025

Hopefully, the English dynamo can continue to impress with the Ligue 1 outfit and force his way into Thomas Tuchel’s plans for England this season, and beyond.

Romano says Arsenal in contact to sign "deadly finisher" who loves Henry

Arsenal have now resumed talks to sign a “deadly finisher” for the second half of the campaign as they look to add more firepower to their ranks in a bid to return silverware under Mikel Arteta.

Arsenal eyeing late move for forward

Despite the transfer window being firmly in its closing stages, Arsenal are still hoping to sign at least one fresh face as they look to catch Liverpool in the second half of the Premier League season.

Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Manchester City, Arteta doubled down on the plan to add more firepower to his side.

"Even above Sesko" – Arsenal "dream" of signing £150m striker for Arteta

The Gunners remain in hot pursuit of a new number nine.

ByEmilio Galantini Feb 1, 2025

“I’m confident with the people we have at the club, with what we are trying to do, that we will do everything we possibly can to achieve it,” the Arsenal boss explained. “The outcome we don’t know yet, it doesn’t depend only on us, but the intention is clear”.

The Gunners have already had one bid rejected for Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who has previously admitted that it would be a dream to move to north London, and they could yet return with a second offer, though Jhon Duran’s sale last week complicates any potential Villa exit for the England forward.

Elsewhere, they have been reportedly offered Victor Boniface after his move to Saudi Arabia fell through, though Evan Ferguson is now off the table as he closes in on a loan move to West Ham.

Instead, the Gunners have begun to look elsewhere once more, but will face plenty of competition to land their man.

Arsenal back in talks to sign forward who idolises Thierry Henry

Now, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal have once again resumed talks to sign Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel, who is free to leave the club in the final hours of the transfer window.

The Frenchman has already turned down a move to north London after Tottenham attempted to sign him, but was left out of Bayern’s squad for the 4-3 win over Holstein Kiel on Saturday and could still depart Bavaria before the window slams shut.

Mathys Tel

As per Romano, Arsenal and Premier League rivals Manchester United are “both in contact with Tel’s camp” over a potential move to the Premier League, with the striker considered a potential opportunity for both sides as they look to add more firepower to their side.

It is added that Tel considers Thierry Henry one of his “main idols” alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, and that there remain “concrete chances to leave Bayern” in the next 36 hours.

The Frenchman is very highly rated, with his idol Henry dubbing him an “extraordinary” talent after working with him at U21 level, while Football Analyst Ben Mattinson has also labelled him a “deadly finisher with the leadership/personality to deliver in big moments”.

Both a loan move and a permanent one are thought to be possible, which could allow Arsenal to strengthen without spending too much money as they look towards potential big summer business in six months time.

He can silence Isidor: Farke must drop Gruev to unleash £50k-p/w Leeds star

Leeds United dropped down to second in the Championship table over the weekend after Sheffield United secured all three points in their clash with Luton Town.

The Whites are now second in the division but can move straight back to the top of the league with as little as a point in their match against Sunderland this evening.

Daniel Farke’s side welcome the Black Cats, who are fourth in the table and can move level with Burnley with a win, to Elland Road for a big match-up tonight.

The West Yorkshire outfit come into this clash off the back of a terrific 4-0 win away at Watford in their last outing in the Championship, and will be hoping to follow up with another impressive showing.

Leeds are currently gunning for automatic promotion back to the Premier League at the second time of asking and that means that every point counts, with Sheffield United and Burnley providing stern competition.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

The Whites came close to a huge three points when they visited the Stadium of Light in the reverse fixture earlier this season, only for disaster to strike…

What happened when Leeds visited Sunderland

Farke’s men travelled to Wearside at the start of October, in the early stages of the 2024/25 campaign, and played out an entertaining, for the neutral, 2-2 draw.

It was the Black Cats who struck first, though, as teenage sensation Chris Rigg converted from close-range after a scramble in the box provided him with a huge chance to score after just nine minutes.

Sunderland'sChrisRiggand Wilson Isidor celebrate after the match

Joel Piroe did not need long to find an answer for Leeds, however, as the Dutch centre-forward met Wilfried Gnonto’s beautiful cross from the right flank to head into the bottom corner in the 22nd minute.

It was then a stalemate until Junior Firpo drove forward down the left flank and played a one-two with Gnonto, who put it on a plate for the left-back to find the far corner in the 56th minute.

Leeds appeared to be on course for all three points at the Stadium of Light as they repelled attack after attack, with Joe Rodon making six clearances and three blocks in total.

However, with just seconds left in the match, Illan Meslier inexplicably allowed the ball to bounce through his grasp and into the back of his net after Firpo deflected an effort that seemed to be going straight towards the French goalkeeper.

It was a big mistake by the former Lorient man and one that he will surely be keen to avenge by putting in a fantastic performance against Sunderland this evening.

All of the players across the defence could need to be at their best, though, because Black Cats centre-forward Wilson Isidor has been in phenomenal form of late.

Wilson Isidor's form this season

The 24-year-old number nine failed to score in the reverse fixture but he did create a ‘big chance’ for his teammates and won four of his seven duels, which shows that it was far from a poor performance.

Sunderland's Wilson Isidor

Isidor, who joined the club on a permanent deal in the winter window after initially being on loan from Zenit, has proven himself to be a reliable striker at Championship level so far this season.

The French whiz has racked up 11 goals and seven ‘big chances’ created in 26 starts in the second tier for Regis Le Bris’ side, and has been in particularly impressive form of late.

As you can see in the table above, Isidor has registered one goal contribution in each of his last four matches in the league, which shows that Leeds are up against a striker who is confident and ready to produce tonight.

The Sunderland star, who scored the winner in a clash with Sheffield United last month, is a huge threat at the top end of the pitch and one that the Whites have to be wary of ahead of this game this evening at Elland Road.

In order to silence the in-form French marksman, Farke must ruthlessly ditch Ilia Gruev from the starting line-up in order to bring Pascal Struijk into the side.

Why Pascal Struijk could silence Wilson Isidor

Firstly, it will be harsh to drop the Bulgarian dynamo from the XI after he played the full 90 minutes against Watford last time out, but Struijk is now back from injury and bringing him into the team would allow Ethan Ampadu to play in his natural midfield role.

Gruev lost seven of his 11 duels against the Hornets and the captain, who has won 64% of his duels this season, could move up into midfield to offer more physicality in the middle of the park.

As well as improving the physicality of the midfield set-up, moving Ampadu into the midfield alongside Ao Tanak and dropping the Bulgaria international to the bench would provide Farke with the chance to reinstate Struijk next to Rodon.

The £50k-per-week Dutch defender, who was once dubbed “unbelievable” by former teammate Liam Cooper, recently missed four matches through injury and has been on the bench in the last three league outings, but should be brought into the XI for this game in order to utilise his defensive skills up against Isidor.

As you can see in the table above, Struijk could have a better chance of dealing with the in-form Sunderland centre-forward than Rodon, based on his superior defensive statistics in the Championship this season.

The former Ajax youngster has won the ball back more frequently than the Wales international, without making any major mistakes that have led to shots, goals, or penalties, and this suggests that he could be the man to silence Isidor this evening.

That is why Farke must drop Gruev down to the bench to shuffle his side around, with Ampadu moving into midfield to dominate in the middle of the park and Struijk coming into the XI to deal with the French striker.
