Mahika Gaur hits her straps as England's next generation step up

Alice Capsey hails “exciting young squad” after teenage trio help to seal victory in first T20I

Alan Gardner01-Sep-2023

Mahika Gaur claimed her first England wicket with the final ball of her debut•Getty Images

Never mind the persistent drizzle and autumnal chill, it was all about teenage kicks for England at the start of their T20I series with Sri Lanka in Hove. Alice Capsey, who turned 19 a few weeks ago, produced the star turn with her second international fifty, while Freya Kemp, 18, twinkled in her batting cameo – but perhaps the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Mahika Gaur, the 17-year-old debutant who claimed her first England wicket with her final ball of the night.Capsey has been an England player for just over a year – it feels like she has been around much longer, having shot to prominence as a 16-year-old during the inaugural edition of the Hundred – but she took on the role of senior pro in an experimental batting order that saw Maia Bouchier open for the first time in her international career and Kemp, playing as a specialist batter as she continues her recovery from a back stress fracture, at No. 4.This series, which sees England missing the likes of Sophia Dunkley, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone either for rest or through injury, had been billed by captain Heather Knight as a chance for the youngsters to push their case. And while it was the familiar face of Danni Wyatt who set the tone with the bat, before victory was closed out by Kate Cross – the experienced seamer playing her first T20I in almost four years – much of what took place in between justified the faith shown by Knight and head coach, Jon Lewis.”It’s a young squad but a really exciting squad,” Capsey said. “You look at Mahika coming in and making a difference and you’ve got players like Bess Heath and Issy Wong on the sidelines who are extraordinary cricketers who can change the game just like that so yeah, it’s nice to obviously be in the XI and but you’ve always got people coming up behind you and putting pressure on you which is which is great for the women’s game and English cricket.”Obviously we’re missing a few big names out of our squad, just getting rested. It’s nice for players who have performed in regional cricket to come and get their opportunity to be a part of the England environment to see what it’s about and I guess be exposed to international cricket so that when they do get their opportunity and, if in the future they become a permanent part of the side, then they know what it’s like to be a part of the squad and they’re already integrated, which is brilliant. They’ve fitted in so well with our squad so it’s been really nice to have them about.”For Gaur, who is actually an old salt by some measures, having made her international debut for UAE at the age of 12, this threatened to be a tricky introduction. With the toss delayed by an hour due to the weather, she was presented with her cap by Cross and then had to wait to get involved with the action after Sri Lanka chose to bowl in a shortened, 17-over game.Related

Capsey, Gaur shine in the wet to help England clinch rain-affected win

England’s aggression meant the visitors were staring down the barrel of a record run-chase when Gaur took the new ball. With rain in the air again, her first delivery swung down the leg side for wides but she quickly hit her straps, twice appealing for lbw decisions and prompting a review for caught behind down the leg side. Then, one ball into her second over, the players went off – and a subsequent rejig of the requirements meant when she walked back out 45 minutes later, Sri Lanka were suddenly in the game needing 45 off 17 with all ten wickets standing. The assault duly came, as Chamari Athapaththu launched the third ball back after the resumption for six. But Gaur put her 6ft 3in frame to good use with a well-directed short ball and then found the edge of the Sri Lanka captain’s bat to cap her maiden England appearance (and 20th T20I overall) with a wicket.”I think her previous ball, her bouncer was superb,” Capsey said. “I think that really set up the wicket and yeah, obviously her first England wicket, you can’t go past that. It’s an incredible achievement and no one can take that away from her.”We’ve all got along with her really well. She’s fitted in perfectly, she’s just a really good human. She’s just someone who doesn’t take too much fuss. She gets on with it, she works really hard and I’m not surprised how well she went out there and bowled today. It was probably a different role to what she was expecting, having to go to her death overs pretty quickly but she took that role on really well and it shows her character.”We all just told her to really go out there and express herself, she doesn’t need to change, she’s been bowling so well in the regional cricket and in the Hundred cricket on the platform as well. I think the messaging was pretty much ‘go out there and do what you do, we’re all backing you’. Whenever you step on to that cricket pitch, you’ve got everyone behind you and just enjoy it.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tudor wants Juventus to add defensive players that can actually hold and control the backline, something the team have been missing. Juventus, in their effort, have permanently signed Lloyd Kelly for €17.5 million (£15m/$20m) from Newcastle United. While Tudor's side were also interested in Viega, who impressed during his loan at Turin, the Italian side couldn't match the London club's transfer fee. They have now identified Aguerd as a promising figure to lead the backline but might have to offer Daniele Rugani to West Ham in return.

Juventus general manager Damien Comolli wants to make big changes at the club. The Italian side were also considering replacing Tudor, but the Croatian's last-minute effort changed the feeling around him for the club to then extend his contract for two years. Defender Bremer is expected to return early at the onset of next season after his knee injury last October. This will strengthen the squad, but gaps are evident as the club look into the possibility of adding another left-footed player. At the front, Randal Kolo Muani's situation hasn't progressed, although Juve will retain his services till the culmination of the Club World Cup.

Dravid: WI series loss has shown India needs batting depth

India are placing a high value on having a wide array of bowling options in T20I cricket. So, despite the risks involved, they went in with four No. 11s in each of the five games against West Indies. The resulting lack of batting depth has been a big talking point and it appears the team management is very aware of this. Head coach Rahul Dravid admitted that they were hamstrung by the resources they had – or lack thereof – after finishing on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline.”I think in terms of our squad here, probably it didn’t allow us the flexibility in some ways to be able to change the combinations a little bit,” he said in the press conference after the final T20I. “But I think going forward, we’ve got to look at certain areas in which we can get better. Finding depth in our batting has been an area we are trying to address. We are trying to do the best we possibly can but that’s certainly an area we can look at, how we cannot weaken our bowling attack but ensure we have a certain amount of depth in batting.”As these games are going on, and scores are becoming bigger and bigger, if you look at West Indies, they had Alzarri Joseph coming in at No. 11 and he can hit a mean ball. So you have sides which have that depth. Obviously, we have some challenges on that front and we need to work on that. It’s certainly something that this series has shown us and we need to build on that depth.”Related

  • Tilak: 'I'm here because of the IPL'

Several senior players were missing from this tour either due to workload management or injury. Even so, a lot of them are either specialist batters, like Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, or specialist bowlers, like Jasprit Bumrah. India are searching for allrounders and Wasim Jaffer on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time:Out show suggested it may be time to bring in some more IPL head-turners.”The bulk of the [T20 World Cup] team will be from this 15,” he said. “You need to look at the youngsters to take you forward in this format. So players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, they are the future. But there are some gaps you need to fill. The major concern is the batting finishing at No. 7. Quite a few of the top order are not getting a start and not converting it and quite a bit of that boils down to them feeling there’s nobody to bat after No. 7 so they have to bat the bulk of the overs and when you go with that mindset, it doesn’t help.”Within ten months’ time, India will be playing the World Cup. This can’t be the template. The batting needs to come till No. 8, possibly No. 9, somebody who can tonk the ball. And obviously the bowlers, they need to start getting their batting a little bit better. At least their six-hitting or four-hitting ability. We need to look at guys who can bat and bowl. Shivam Dube comes to my mind. Venkatesh Iyer, Washington Sundar, those are the guys that come to mind and we need to groom them.”1:26

How did India’s debutants in the West Indies fare?

Jaiswal, Tilak and Mukesh impress Dravid

The players who did get an opportunity in the West Indies made the most of it. Jaiswal struck a century on Test debut and a match-winning half-century in the T20Is as well. Tilak is already being talked about as an option for bigger challenges, like the Asia Cup. And Mukesh, having toiled for several years in domestic cricket for Bengal, proved he was good enough to win an India cap in all three formats in the space of just a few weeks.”I thought all the three guys who made debuts for us in this series stood up,” Dravid said. “Yashasvi Jasiwal in the fourth game, I thought he played a very good innings. He’s shown us what he can do in the IPL and it was nice to see him replicate that in international cricket.”Tilak Varma, I thought, was really good, to come in in the middle order. He came in sometimes in very difficult situations. He plays with a lot of intent, plays very positively, looks to move the game along, fielded brilliantly throughout the series, showed us he can bowl one or two overs as well. So really positive signs from Tilak and to have that left-hander in the middle order does make a huge difference against some of the attacks that we’ve been playing against.”Mukesh as well. He debuted in all the formats in this series and I thought he acquitted himself really well. His ability to bowl at the death, sometimes he was called upon to bowl against some really big, powerful, hard-hitters and he acquitted himself well for someone who was just playing his fourth or fifth game. So I think there’s some real good positives in the guys who made their debuts for us and hopefully they take confidence from the series and keep learning as they go forward. They’ll be going to Ireland and get a few more opportunities in the T20 format and I’m sure the more opportunities they get, they better they’ll be.”

Farke must ruthlessly axe Leeds star who earns more than Gnonto & Meslier

Picking up just one win across their last five Championship contests, Leeds United are in danger of falling out of the coveted top two positions in the tricky division.

If it hadn’t been for Zan Vipotnik’s late equaliser for Swansea City on Saturday, a golden victory would have been coming the way of the hot-and-cold Whites, but a disappointing 2-2 draw would end up being the final scoreline instead.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkeapplauds fans

There were plenty of heroes and villains on show from the hosts, with Wilfried Gnonto firmly in the first bracket after scoring Leeds’ second on the day, whilst Illan Meslier continues to find himself in the club’s bad books.

Best and worst performers vs Swansea

Despite Gnonto displaying obvious class this season, the Italian attacker has only started 20 Championship games across 2024/25 to date.

Still, the 5 foot 8 speedster would only need 14 minutes of action against Alan Sheehan’s Swans to gift his side the slender 2-1 lead, with the 21-year-old’s effort far too fierce for opposition goalkeeper Lawrence Vigoroux to palm away.

Unfortunately for the promotion chasers, that goal would be immediately cancelled out by Vipotnik’s strike right at the death, with questions rightly asked about Meslier after the effort somehow went past him.

Dropping the ball into Harry Darling’s path for 1-1 too, patience will be running very thin in the Leeds fanbase surrounding the error-prone Frenchman, with Meslier pocketing a hefty £30k-per-week wage – as per Capology – which is the same amount Gnonto rakes in.

Whilst promotion might see Farke change up who his starting ‘keeper is, there is one high earner – who earns more than Meslier and Gnonto – who is in danger of being axed in the short-term, with his performance against Swansea another worrying one to watch.

The Leeds high earner who could now be axed

Farke will be glad that there hasn’t been a whole host of injury issues for him to deal with this campaign, with the main concern in this area coming in the middle of the park.

Indeed, the likes of Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu have found themselves sidelined for significant amounts of time this season, missing a combined 47 games, consequently, for both club and country.

Ampadu’s injury numbers – 24/25

Ampadu’s long absences on the sideline haven’t necessarily hit Leeds hard, however, with Farke calling upon the likes of Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell in the holding midfield positions instead, leading to the Whites managing to pick up eight league wins when the 24-year-old is out of the side.

Arguably, his showing on Saturday looked as if his manager had fast-tracked him back into the XI too quickly after injury, with the shaky Leeds number four only registering 23 accurate passes when he is usually averaging 59.1 per Championship clash.

Of course, like Gnonto who is another high earner in the camp, there’s no doubt that Ampadu will still have a key role to play moving forward in Leeds’ promotion fight, but Farke might well feel he doesn’t need to start his £40k-per-week man every week following the Italian’s example.

With injury issues ramping up, it’s been far from a smooth sailing season for the Welshman, but the ex-Norwich City boss will know he needs to utilise his full squad between now and May in order to deliver a glorious return to the Premier League, even if that means he drops the 24-year-old on occasion.

Therefore, Farke must consider ruthlessly dropping the Wales international from the starting line-up and only bringing him in when the midfielder is fully fit and ready to play at his best.

Not just Aaronson: 49ers must sell Leeds dud who's rinsed them of £22m

Leeds United desperately need to offload one player who’s rapidly declined over the years.

Buttler masterclass sets up record chase to put Originals in final

Southern Brave overwhelmed after fifties from Allen, Vince and Conway lead them to 196 for 1

Alan Gardner26-Aug-2023Manchester Originals ransacked their way to the highest successful run-chase in the men’s Hundred on a night of boundary-fuelled belligerence at the Kia Oval, sweeping past a seemingly intimidating target set by Southern Brave with seven wickets and four balls to spare. Jos Buttler was at his imperious best, striking 82 off 46, and although he wasn’t there at the end, victory was sealed in fitting style as Jamie Overton crashed Chris Jordan high over long-off.Brave looked to have shrugged off the disadvantage of losing the toss and being inserted, following a delay for mopping-up after rain washed out the women’s eliminator, becoming the first side to record three individual half-centuries in a 100-ball innings. Finn Allen set the initial tempo with 69 off 38, before James Vince added a 24-ball fifty during the closing stages; Devon Conway was neat and tidy in between times to anchor the innings with an unbeaten 51 off 38.But as Originals set about their chase in ruthless fashion, it immediately called into question whether Brave had spent their batting resources wisely. Phil Salt’s first three balls all went to the boundary – albeit two of them were thick edges between slip and gully – as he hammered five fours and two sixes from 14 powerplay deliveries, Originals posting 61 without loss. The scoring rate only went up with the fielding restrictions off. Buttler, whose one miscue came from his second ball when he just cleared cover running back, hammered Craig Overton for his first six down the ground before Salt drilled two more brutal hits in a set costing 21. Salt fell to his next ball to depart for an incendiary 47 off 17, Vince roaring in celebration after scooping a low catch in the covers as Mitchell Santner’s introduction paid off – but Buttler kept the pressure on by hitting Santner into the crowd before new batter Max Holden carved and scooped George Garton for sixes from his fourth and seventh balls.Originals had raced to 100 from 41 balls, equalling their own record from the 2022 edition, and they were 115 for 1 at halfway. The carnage continued for Brave’s seamers as Jordan was struck for 17 in the next set, Buttler bringing up a 26-ball half-century, and the Originals captain took back-to-back boundaries off Tymal Mills before the competition’s leading wicket-taker ended Holden’s cameo with a slower delivery.Buttler’s calculated assault continued as he crashed Rehan Ahmed for two more sixes during a run of ten consecutive balls from the teenaged legspinner, at the end of which Originals needed 26 from 20. The requirement was down to 17 when Buttler finally top-edged one into the night sky to be held by the scrambling Rehan and Laurie Evans’ emphatic blow into the crowd off Mills kept Originals on course.Buttler, England’s white-ball captain, has been a vocal backer of the tournament in recent days and extended his lead at the top of the run-scoring charts. This has been his first full season of involvement and he will now lead Originals out at Lord’s against Oval Invincibles on Sunday, looking to go one better than the side did in his absence last year.ESPNcricinfo LtdFollowing the abandonment of the early game, and with the threat of more rain interrupting proceedings in south London, Buttler had no hesitation asking Brave to set a target. He admitted afterwards to being a “bit disappointed” with his side’s effort with the ball – which included conceding 20 extras – but added: “Once we got that momentum it was hard to stop us.”There was swing and seam movement for the Originals new-ball pair of Richard Gleeson and Josh Little, but although the Brave openers only managed four scoring shots in the first 15 balls, they still had 24 on the board through a combination of leg byes and wides – which had increased to 37 without loss after the powerplay.Allen’s first boundary came off a thick edge over slip, and he then needed assessing by the physio after playing a rolling ramp shot straight into the grille of his helmet. He launched Little for a sweetly struck six over deep midwicket, while Conway got going by chipping his fourth ball over cover for four, but there were few other examples of timing during a scratchy start. After back-to-back boundaries in the eighth set, Allen then took Calvin Harrison for four and six, followed by another straight smash over the ropes off Zaman Khan to bring up a 31-ball half-century and put Brave on the front foot at the halfway stage of their innings on 84 for none. Harrison was again targeted in the 12th, as both Allen and Conway cleared the ropes in a set that cost 20. But two balls after hammering Paul Walter over long-on for his fifth six, bringing up a record opening stand for the competition, Allen was finally removed attempting to reverse-scoop and feathering a catch behind. That was to be Originals’ only breakthrough with the ball, but they nevertheless managed to keep on top of the scoring. Vince also made a slow start, eking out six runs from his first ten balls, but a flicked six off Zaman seemed to bring him to life. Off his next 12 balls, Brave’s captain smoked 40 runs, with Originals paying the price for missing the cut-off and only being allowed four men out for the final 11 deliveries.Conway had batted throughout the innings without ever dominating, reaching a 37-ball fifty during the final set, as Brave notched the highest Hundred total at The Oval – only for Buttler’s men in black to produce an extra-terrestrial response.

Ollie Watkins salary: How much does Aston Villa star earn per week and annually in Premier League?

Everything you need to know about Ollie Watkins' salary at Aston Villa

Ollie Watkins joined Aston Villa in 2020 after spending three seasons with Brentford. The English striker signed for the Premier League side for a then club-record fee of £28 million. Watkins reunited with his former manager Dean Smith and quickly adapted to life at Villa Park.

Pep must now drop Savinho & unleash Man City's "special player"

The Premier League title may finally be going elsewhere after a four-year stranglehold, but this season certainly isn’t over as far as Manchester City are concerned.

Not only are the Citizens still firmly in the race for Champions League qualification, but Pep Guardiola’s side can also right the wrongs of last term by claiming FA Cup glory.

Such an accolade may not have been the priority when the campaign began, although the Citizens – who have reached the last two finals in the competition – must not pass up this opportunity to add to their trophy haul, particularly with the rest of the so-called ‘Big Six’ already crashing out.

The lack of genuine rivals won’t mean that it is a smooth ride to Wembley, however, with the 2023 winners facing a tough task away at high-flying Bournemouth on Sunday afternoon, with the Cherries running out 2-1 winners in this fixture back in November.

Will another upset occur this time around, or can Guardiola help to kickstart a positive end to this sticky campaign by claiming victory?

What happened in Man City's previous meeting vs Bournemouth

For the first time in Premier League history, it was Bournemouth who claimed victory against City when the two sides met earlier in the season, with that result representing the first real signs of trouble in the visitors’ title bid.

In fact, the 2-1 win for the Cherries ensured it was a first top-flight defeat of the campaign for Guardiola and co, with the away side ending that gameweek still only two points behind rivals Liverpool at the summit, after ten games played.

Despite their strong start to 2024/25, City could hardly argue with the result, in truth, as the hosts were dominant right from the off, with Ederson called into action to deny Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert early on.

Semenyo did eventually make the breakthrough after just nine minutes, before summer signing Evanilson added a second on the hour mark, with the former Porto striker prodding home after being left free inside the penalty area.

A late header from Josko Gvardiol did spark a nervy finish inside the Vitality Stadium, although Andoni Iraola’s side held strong, with City suffering their first loss in a month that would end without a win in all competitions.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

In a way, the reigning champions have not recovered since that night on the south coast, with now the perfect time to exact revenge, ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final tie later today.

If Guardiola’s side are to get a positive result, however, the serial-winning coach may need to shuffle his pack following the 2-2 with Brighton last time out, with Savinho among those who could make way.

Why Man City must drop Savinho vs Bournemouth

That outing prior to the international break saw City twice take the lead against the Seagulls, only to twice be begged back, with the stuttering side having now slipped to fifth in the table as a result.

Among the underperformers on the day was that man Savinho, with the former Girona starlet having been replaced after just 58 minutes, having missed two big chances prior to that.

The fleet-footed Brazilian was handed a 5/10 match rating by the MEN’s Simon Bajkowski due to his errant display, with the City correspondent writing that the winger was ‘let down by poor finishing and final touches’.

The upcoming clash with the Cherries could then provide the opportune time to drop the 20-year-old back to the bench, with academy graduate, James McAtee among those who could be in line to take his place.

Lauded as a “special player” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Englishman has been used sparingly this season by Guardiola, albeit while making an impact when he has featured, having scored six times despite only starting six games in all competitions.

Indeed, the 22-year-old has already proven himself something of an FA Cup hero after netting a hat-trick in the 8-0 thrashing of Salford City, with the left-footer capable of slotting in centrally, or in Savinho’s right-wing berth.

With Phil Foden – who hasn’t scored since the win over Chelsea back in January – currently off the boil, it might be wise to give McAtee the nod instead, not least amid his fine form over the international break.

James McAtee for Manchester City.

While question marks are lingering over Foden’s future in the senior England set-up, his compatriot sparkled for the U21s, after registering three goals and assists across meetings with France and Portugal.

There does remain the prospect that McAtee could depart this summer, amid mounting interest in his services, yet the next few months could be his chance to prove that he has a long-term future at the Etihad.

Kanitkar oversaw the women’s team for the home T20I series against Australia in December last year and then the tri-series in South Africa followed by the T20 World Cup earlier this year. The women’s team has been without a permanent head coach since December last year, when Romesh Powar was moved to the NCA. Former India bowler Nooshin Al Khadeer was appointed interim head coach for the women’s team’s last assignment – a white-ball tour of Bangladesh. The BCCI’s cricket advisory committee had conducted interviews for the women’s head coach position with three shortlisted names, but there has been no update on any appointment. In the men’s squad, there are doubts about Tilak Varma’s availability, as he could be asked to stay on in India on standby for the World Cup, given Shreyas Iyer had suffered back spasms just before the Super Four clash against Pakistan in the Asia Cup on Sunday. The women’s team will be led by Smriti Mandhana to start with. If India do make it to the semi-finals, Harmanpreet Kaur, who had been handed a two-match international ban for disciplinary issues, will return to lead in the final or the third-place playoff.
