    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 21-year-old was one of Barca’s breakout players last year, impressing in midfield and even earning a call-up for Spain. But the return of Marc Bernal from his ACL injury, along with the presence of Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Gavi, has pushed him down the pecking order. The Catalan giants are now open to cashing in if the player agrees, though he has not requested a move himself.

  • TELL ME MORE…

Cesc Fabregas’ Como have emerged as surprise contenders, willing to compete with English sides Wolves and West Ham. Barcelona’s willingness to sell stems less from Financial Fair Play issues and more from squad depth, with Casado struggling to find a pathway to minutes. The Spaniard remains determined to fight for his place, showing no signs of pushing for an exit himself. For now, Barca’s stance is that they would only sanction a move if the player decides he wants out, leaving the ball firmly in Casado’s court.

The Catalan giants opened their La Liga campaign with a 3-0 win over Mallorca and now turn their attention to Levante this weekend.

Ex-Barcelona and Inter star Samuel Eto'o faces criminal charges amid allegations of corruption and electoral fraud as president of Cameroon FA

Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto'o is in the middle of a legal storm as he faces allegations of corruption and electoral fraud.

Cameroonian football officials file legal complaints against Eto'oAccusations are wide-ranging Complaints have been submitted to the authoritiesFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

A coalition of Cameroonian football officials, led by international lawyer Emmanuel Nsahlai, has launched a series of legal actions at domestic and international levels against Eto'o's presidency of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAfoot). These complaints allege widespread corruption, electoral fraud and conflicts of interest, casting a dark shadow over his administrative career and putting the integrity of Cameroonian football at risk.

AdvertisementAFPTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The legal battle is not an attack on the former star's legacy as a player as lawyer Nsahlai explained that Eto'o's playing career is "untouchable." Instead, it is a focused effort to address deep-seated governance failures within FECAfoot. The complaints paint a troubling picture of an administration fraught with ethical issues. This includes a previously reported 22-month suspended prison sentence in Spain for tax fraud in 2022, a six-month ban from attending matches imposed by FIFA for misconduct, and a recent U.S. probe into wire fraud related to missing funds.

The list of allegations against Eto'o is extensive. He is accused of alleged corruption and match-fixing in Cameroon's second division, a conflict of interest with the betting company 1xBet, and the alleged misappropriation of approximately $1.5 million from international friendlies. The complaints also highlight the suppression of dissent, pointing to the controversial 10-year suspension of director Guibai Gatama, a vocal opponent of Eto'o.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR ETO'O?

The legal actions have been submitted to Cameroon's Ministry of Sport, the FIFA Ethics Committee, and Confederation of African Football (CAF), which are all now faced with the decision of whether to investigate further. The requests call for a review of FECAfoot's statutes and the provisional suspension of Eto'o from his duties. As Cameroon prepares for the 2026 World Cup, the outcome of these investigations will not only determine Eto'o’s future as a football administrator but also could have significant implications over the credibility and governance of the sport in the region.

'I have to find my rhythm' – Leroy Sane reacts to 'worse league' dig from Julian Nagelsmann as Germany coach casts doubt on World Cup hopes

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sane has reacted after being left out of Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. The 29-year-old winger, who swapped Bayern Munich for Galatasaray on a free transfer, was omitted as Nagelsmann cited his need to “stand out more” in the Turkish Super Lig, which he described as “a bit worse than the Bundesliga." Sane, who has earned 70 caps since his Germany debut in 2015, admitted he must “find his rhythm” to force his way back into contention.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sane’s exclusion highlights the shift in Germany’s selection priorities under Nagelsmann, who is balancing injuries with form and competition level. With Jamal Musiala and Marc-Andre ter Stegen sidelined due to injuries, the coach still chose to leave out Sane, raising questions about his standing in the national team hierarchy after moving to Turkey.

Gala’s lower profile compared to Bayern has inevitably influenced perceptions, and Nagelsmann made it clear that Sane must dominate in his new surroundings to earn his way back. For Germany, the immediate challenge is clear that they must top a qualifying group that includes Slovakia, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg to seal their ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

  • WHAT SANE SAID

Despite the disappointment, Sane struck a measured tone when speaking , saying: “I just have to keep pushing, find my rhythm, and then the Champions League will start soon. The season is still very long."

He also stressed that there is no rift with his national coach: “Everything is fine. He told me that I will definitely continue to be part of the plans. We have a very good relationship.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR SANE?

For Bayern, Sane’s summer departure to Gala was one of the most notable exits of the window, leaving the Bundesliga champions lighter in wide attacking depth, but they quickly revatalised it by signing Luiz Diaz from Liverpool. The German, though, must do something special to convince Nagelsmann to take him to the World Cup.

Arsenal player ratings vs Liverpool: Viktor Gyokeres goes missing again as Gunners suffer huge William Saliba injury blow in Anfield defeat

Mikel Arteta's side mostly held their own at Anfield but lacked any cutting edge in attack against the defending champions

Arsenal fell to their first defeat of the season as they lost 1-0 to Liverpool on Sunday. The Gunners were beaten by Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning free-kick on a day when they also lost William Saliba to injury.

The Gunners suffered a massive blow inside the opening five minutes when Saliba was forced off following a coming together with Hugo Ekitike. They did not let it effect them, however, as they largely kept the home side at arm's length, while Noni Madueke forced Alisson Becker into a save after a corner fell to him on the edge of the box.

Neither side was willing to take too many risks in what was a low-octane affair for long periods. Liverpool thought, however, that they had taken the lead on the hour mark when Ekitike netted from close range, only for the linesman's flag to rule the goal out as Cody Gakpo was offside in the build-up.

That seemed to spark Arne Slot's side into life, but they needed a bolt from the blue to break the deadlock as Szoboszlai struck a superb 30-yard free-kick into the top corner to secure all three points for the defending champions.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from Anfield…

David Raya (6/10):

One poor pass into a dangerous area apart, never looked overly flustered, though he didn't have that much to do aside from picking Szoboszlai's stunning free-kick out of his net.

Jurrien Timber (7/10):

Solid up against his compatriot Gakpo and looked to get forward and support Madueke when possible

William Saliba (N/A):

Off with an injury after just five minutes after clashing with Ekitike.

Gabriel Magalhaes (7/10):

Never troubled by Ekitike as he dominated at the heart of the Gunners' backline.

Riccardo Calafiori (8/10):

Locked down Salah with some strong defending and carried the ball well out of defence. Had a couple of off-target shots.

Mikel Merino (6/10):

Stepped in for Odegaard but couldn't provide the same attacking spark. Did help shut down Mac Allister, though.

Martin Zubimendi (5/10):

Solid if unspectacular for the most part. Needed to take more risks with his passing while he was caught out by Jones' movement, leading to the foul for the winning free-kick.

Declan Rice (5/10):

Did some excellent defensive work and never stopped running. Set-piece deliveries, though, were poor on a day when the Gunners needed to make their dead-ball situations count.

Noni Madueke (8/10):

Used his electric pace to leave Kerkez chasing shadows on more than one occasion, and forced Alisson into his only save of note. Ensured Saka wasn't really missed.

Viktor Gyokeres (3/10):

Just could not get himself involved at all. Booked in the second half of another frustrating display on the road.

Gabriel Martinelli (4/10):

A couple of decent defensive moments aside, he offered little for Arteta's side. Seems to be lacking in confidence.

Cristhian Mosquera (7/10):

On for Saliba in the opening five minutes and did not look fazed as he dealt well with Ekitike.

Eberechi Eze (6/10):

Made a couple of dangerous, driving runs in his 20 minutes on the pitch.

Martin Odegaard (6/10):

Couldn't conjure up a moment of magic after being thrown on in the 70th minute.

Max Dowman (N/A):

Chucked on in the 89th minute.

Mikel Arteta (5/10):

His side might have been undone by a world-class strike, but they didn't take the risks required to try and win the game beforehand. His Anfield hoodoo remains.

'It takes time!' – Borussia Dortmund chief explains last-minute deal to sign Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea

Borussia Dortmund sporting chief Sebastian Kehl has revealed just how brutal Chelsea were to deal with as he wrapped up a deal to sign Carney Chukwuemeka in a €20 million (£17m/$23m) move. Chukwuemeka, who spent last season on loan at Dortmund, was never likely to feature prominently in Chelsea’s long-term plans. But with the club seeking to keep their financial balance sheets in check, they refused to let him leave on the cheap.

Dortmund snap up Chukwuemeka in €20m swoopKehl slams Chelsea’s ruthless transfer tacticsTrio of late signings spark Bundesliga buzzFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Chukwuemeka was joined by Aaron Anselmino, snapped up on a straight loan deal without a purchase clause, while Fabio Silva also arrived from Wolves in a €22.5m (£19.5m/$26m) transfer. The triple swoop has injected fresh energy into Dortmund’s squad, but Kehl admitted the path to those deals was far from smooth.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT KEHL SAID

Kehl pulled no punches when describing the frustrations of negotiating with clubs across the Channel.

“Transfers in the Bundesliga are generally a bit easier,” he said. “We’ve now dealt with clubs that aren’t necessarily dependent on money. This changes the negotiating position dramatically. And I have to say: the English are often pain-free. They sometimes deliberately enter the final phase of the transfer window because they know that, given their financial resources, they can rest assured that a potential domino effect will follow. So, we had to be patient in order to be able to negotiate.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea were determined to squeeze maximum value from a player they picked up for significantly less. That left Dortmund waiting until late August before they could strike.

“Of course, I could also fly to Chelsea in July, sit down with the bosses, and make the €20 million offer for Chukwuemeka,” Kehl added. “But then they’d probably say, ‘You can fly home immediately!’ It takes time and a clear strategy to implement your ideas. And it also requires a clear commitment from the player.”

For Chukwuemeka, the move represents a fresh opportunity to establish himself after a stop-start period in England. THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe was named France's full-time captain in March 2023, in light of Hugo Lloris' retirement from international football. In 2024, though, Mbappe was not selected for two consecutive international breaks, which gave rise to speculation that all was not well between Mbappe and the rest of the dressing room and coaching staff. However, those rumours were short-lived. Mbappe continues to be one of the pillars of the French side under Didier Deschamps as he eyes eight more goals to become France's all-time top scorer.

  • WHAT KOUNDE SAID

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Kounde said: "I've always found that he does it quite naturally. He's very present for his teammates, very open to discussion, he shares responsibilities. Because of the player he is, he inspires respect and recognition from his teammates. It's quite natural for him."
