New Tonali: Newcastle looking to sign £35m midfielder after holding talks

Newcastle United have built their modern reputation not just on financial clout but on shrewdly identifying opportunities that balance ambition with strategy.

Their recruitment since the change of ownership has been measured, targeted and often brave.

The signing of Sandro Tonali in 2023 epitomised that approach.

In making the AC Milan midfielder the most expensive Italian player in history, Newcastle showed their willingness to gamble on a player who combined proven Serie A quality with enormous potential upside.

Despite his 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations, Tonali has since returned to play a central role in Eddie Howe’s side.

He was instrumental in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup triumph – their first domestic silverware in 70 years – and now forms part of a midfield three with Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton that ranks among the most complete in Europe.

That calculated risk has paid off.

It has also demonstrated to Newcastle’s hierarchy that Italian football remains fertile ground for elite talent that can be persuaded to make the move to the Premier League.

Newcastle make contact over Inter star

They have already dipped back into Serie A this summer, recruiting Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, further evidence of a strategy built on trusted relationships and a willingness to invest in players who can adapt quickly to Howe’s aggressive, high-pressing football.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Against that backdrop, it is no surprise that Newcastle are once again monitoring the Italian market.

According to reports in Italy, via Sport Witness, Newcastle have made initial contact with Inter Milan regarding midfielder Davide Frattesi.

While discussions have not moved beyond a preliminary stage, the very fact the club have opened a dialogue underlines their intent to explore whether another Serie A talent could be lured to Tyneside.

Frattesi, 25, has long been viewed as one of Italy’s brightest midfielders.

He joined Inter in 2023 from Sassuolo, and since then, he has grown into an important option for Inter.

Christian Chivu, Inter’s new head coach, considers him a key part of the squad, but with the likes of Nicolo Barella, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Piotr Zieliński and Luis Henrique all competing for central roles, a departure cannot be entirely ruled out.

Still, Inter’s position is firm: any suitor must meet their €40m (£35m) valuation.

That figure is not insignificant, particularly for Newcastle, who have already invested heavily this summer.

Jacob Ramsey’s arrival from Aston Villa strengthened their midfield department, making a further signing in that area less of a priority.

Yet Frattesi’s profile fits with Howe’s long-term vision of building a squad capable of competing both domestically and in Europe.

Lessons From Tonali and the Italian Connection

Frattesi’s numbers underline his threat.

He scored five times and registered two assists in 28 Serie A appearances last season, while also making an impact on the European stage with two goals in 13 Champions League outings, including a decisive strike in Inter’s semi-final victory over Barcelona.

Internationally, he already has 29 caps for Italy and an impressive return of eight goals.

Beyond raw output, his underlying metrics stand out. According to FBref, he ranks in the 99th percentile among midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues for non-penalty expected goals per 90 (0.37), the 95th percentile for total shots per 90 (1.91) and the 93rd percentile for touches inside the attacking penalty area per 90 (3.08).

Few central midfielders in Europe consistently arrive in advanced areas with such effect.

The parallels with Newcastle’s pursuit of Tonali are obvious. In both cases, the club identified a player who, while not surplus to requirements, could potentially be prised away from one of Serie A’s giants for different reasons.

In Tonali’s case, although he was a key player in Milan’s 2021/22 Scudetto-winning side, the club’s difficult financial situation forced his transfer.

By contrast, Frattesi’s place in Inter’s starting lineup is far from guaranteed.

This situation could play into Newcastle’s hands, particularly if the player desires a more consistent role ahead of a potential World Cup campaign with Italy.

At 25, he has room to grow further, and his skillset – high pressing, ball-carrying, late penalty-box entries – aligns with Howe’s blueprint.

The challenge is financial. Inter, flush with midfield depth but also mindful of squad harmony, are under no pressure to sell unless their €40m (£35m) price tag is met.

Newcastle, mindful of PSR Regulations, may be wary, having already spent significantly on Ramsey, Anthony Elanga and Thiaw this summer.

That said, Newcastle’s Serie A ventures are rarely speculative.

Their recruitment team has cultivated strong networks in Italy, and the arrivals of Tonali and Thiaw underline the willingness of Italian clubs to engage with them when the price is right.

Whether or not a deal for Frattesi materialises, the broader point is that Newcastle are doubling down on a transfer strategy that has already brought success.

Tonali’s rehabilitation from suspension into a central figure was a vindication of Newcastle’s faith in Serie A talent.

Frattesi, with his goalscoring instincts and ability to operate at both ends of the pitch, could be the next step in that evolution.

For Newcastle, the Serie A experiment has already paid off once – a repeat, even if not immediately, seems only a matter of time.

Italian swear words and living on Lake Garda! How Jamie Vardy and wife Rebekah are settling into life abroad following Leicester icon's move to Serie A side Cremonese

Jamie Vardy is embracing a new challenge in Serie A, with it revealed that the ex-England international is living in a £2 million villa on Lake Garda while Italian lessons are teaching him “colourful swear words”. The veteran frontman has stepped out of his comfort zone after reaching the end of his contract at Leicester City and becoming a free agent.

  • Vardy ready to emulate evergreen Ronaldo

At 38 years of age, and with no plans to retire any time soon, Vardy has signed an initial one-year contract with Cremonese – with that deal including the option for a further 12-month extension, which would take him into his 40s.

Linked with Wrexham but headed to Italy

Vardy snubbed interest from a number of teams in British football, having reportedly registered on the recruitment radar of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney at Wrexham, and is loving his new life in picturesque surroundings.

  • Vardy already knows Italian swear words

He is said to be undertaking “intensive” language lessons, alongside wife Rebekah, with a source telling : “Jamie and Becky are already loving Italian life, and doing all they can to blend in seamlessly. The whole family is having Italian lessons, and Jamie is already au fait with some of the more colourful swear words. ‘Vaffanculo’ is his current fave; he actually knows most swear words in most languages – he is quite the polymath.

“People close to them thought Jamie would base himself out there for the season and Becky and the kids would stay as they are – but in the end they’ve decided to throw themselves in at the deep end as a family.

“Actually she really fell in love with the place a year or so ago when they went there on holiday, and it's early days but they are super happy – it's all going really well, and they've made some great new pals.”

Why wife & children haven't moved yet

Rebekah and her five children are yet to join Jamie in Italy on a full-time basis, with Vardy having told reporters of an elongated moving process: “They're not here yet at this moment. You have to go through all the procedures to get visas and things like that. But they're really looking forward to it. A real buzz and excitement, especially with getting to learn a new language as well. So, as a whole, we can't wait.”

James Vince quits first-class cricket to take up PSL deal

Hampshire batter steps down as club captain in move that will rock county game

James Vince has quit first-class cricket for 2025 in a move that will enable him to play in the Pakistan Super League despite the ECB’s new policy on No-Objection Certificates (NOCs). Vince will continue to lead Hampshire’s T20 side but has stepped down as club captain after nine seasons in charge, and will play no part in their County Championship campaign this summer.Vince, 33, was retained by Karachi Kings ahead of the PSL draft on Monday. The ECB announced in November that it will only grant NOCs – the paperwork required for players to feature in overseas leagues – to white-ball specialists for tournaments that take place during the English season, with the notable exception of the IPL.The new policy, and the PCB’s decision to shift its flagship tournament into a new April-May window, left Vince with a choice between skipping the PSL – at significant financial cost – or renegotiating the final year of his Hampshire contract to become a white-ball specialist. He has chosen the latter, in a move confirmed by the club on Wednesday morning.”I love Hampshire,” Vince said. “It’s been my club and home for 16 years, so I want to be able to maintain my best to keep delivering for Hampshire in T20 cricket, and hopefully even further our success in the competition [the Blast]. I also need to understand what is best for my family, and combine that with the stage of my career I am at.”Hampshire cited Vince’s decision to relocate his family to Dubai – where he is currently playing for Gulf Giants – as a major factor in his new deal, following a series of unexplained attacks on their home in the county last year. “I am so grateful to everyone at Utilita Bowl for supporting me last year through a really tough time, and for allowing me to make this next step,” Vince said.Related

GMR 'keen' on Hundred investment after Hampshire deal

Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, asked the club’s supporters to be understanding of Vince’s decision. “James has been at the heart of the club for the best part of 20 years, showing absolute commitment on and off the field as the team’s leading batter and captain,” he said.”We recognise that this announcement will be tinged with disappointment for many fans but hope everyone will join us in celebrating what he has given to our club over many years and supporting him as he fulfils his commitment to continue leading the Hawks in the 2025 Vitality Blast.”Vince is the first high-profile player to make a major career decision informed by the ECB’s new policy and even if, at 33, he was unlikely to add to his 13 Test caps, his move is significant. He has captained Hampshire since 2015 and has been the linchpin of their batting line-up, scoring 29 hundreds and averaging 41.22 across his 197 first-class matches for them.Tom Kohler-Cadmore could follow Vince’s lead•PCB

Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who was signed on a lucrative contract by Peshawar Zalmi on Monday, is likely to follow Vince’s lead and has committed to playing in the PSL. He has been speaking to Somerset and the ECB in a bid for clarity over whether he will need to renegotiate his own deal – moving to a white-ball contract – in order to be granted an NOC.Players reacted furiously when the ECB announced its new policy in November, threatening legal action, but the board has dug its heels in since. Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, said last month that the policy is designed “to defend our game” and that the collective interest of English cricket “takes precedence over the priorities of an individual”.2025 will be Hampshire’s first season under new ownership, after the GMR Group – who co-own Delhi Capitals in the IPL – agreed a multi-million pound deal to buy the club from Rod Bransgrove last year. GMR are also expected to become owners of Southern Brave, the Hundred team based at Utilita Bowl, assuming they meet the ECB’s valuation.

Tottenham verbally agree deal for £60m star as Frank awaits "final green light"

Tottenham have a few transfer items on their agenda, namely Crystal Palace playmaker Eberechi Eze, with Thomas Frank looking to replace the injured James Maddison by signing a quality, proven Premier League star.

This time last week, Spurs re-opened negotiations over a deal for Eze after north London rivals Arsenal seemingly backed off in the race for his signature – despite Mikel Arteta’s side holding extensive talks with the player’s representatives.

Eberechi Eze at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal’s hesitation stems from wanting to give highly-rated youngster Ethan Nwaneri more game time next season (talkSPORT), with club captain Martin Odegaard also currently their first choice number 10 – meaning it isn’t exactly an area in need of reinforcing.

This has given Spurs a chance to swoop in and sign Eze for themselves, with the 27-year-old believed to have already agreed personal terms as Daniel Levy and Palace chairman Steve Parish attempt to hash out a potential £60 million deal.

Eze featured in Palace’s opening Premier League game of the season on Sunday – a 0-0 draw against Chelsea – and Oliver Glasner attempted to quash rumours of an imminent exit for the England international.

However, as much as Glasner may not like it, the likelihood is that Eze will be a Tottenham player by the transfer deadline on September 1.

Reports suggest that Tottenham are on the verge of a deal for Eze and Palace are actively pursuing replacements, with Leicester City star Bilal El Khannouss approached by the south Londoners (Sacha Tavolieri).

Tottenham reach "verbal agreement" to sign Eberechi Eze

According to reliable Spurs insider, Paul O’Keefe, this afternoon, a breakthrough has now been made.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEzereacts

Talks have apparently reached the final stage, with Tottenham reaching a verbal agreement to sign Eze.

O’Keefe expands on this, detailing in a thread via X that Spurs have agreed on the deal numbers with Palace, and all that is left is for Glasner’s side to give the “final green light” to Eze’s move.

He adds that nothing is done until contracts are signed, but Frank has now taken a pretty monumental step towards welcoming the attacking midfielder to N17.

In the meantime, before Palace do give their full approval to the transfer, it is likely they’ll want to secure their replacement first – so keep an eye on El Khannouss and his potential switch to Selhurst Park.

The best players to include in your FPL wildcard and when to use it 25/26

It’s officially FPL season and that means absurd forfeits, creative team names and feeling guilty about cheering a late Bruno Fernandes penalty. Come on, we’ve all done it.

After three gameweeks, a clearer picture is beginning to emerge as to who the must-have players could be. Last season, it was Jacob Murphy who emerged as a surprise option, but in the current campaign the likes of Jack Grealish are proving to be worthwhile transfer coups.

Everton star Jack Grealish

There’s still plenty to think about, however, and with two wildcards at your disposal, there’s still time to ensure that your Dad who still thinks Fernando Torres is Liverpool’s No.9 does not win the family league title for a third straight season.

Best gameweek to use FPL wildcard

The international break is here and, more importantly, the summer transfer window has ended. Using your wildcard now could be wise. It would be an understandable urge, but holding fire and implementing a free hit this time around may be the way forward. That way, any slight gamble taken on a now-underperforming player can be solved for at least one week whilst some much-needed points are gained.

The fixtures are also not the most suitable after the international break. In back-to-back weeks, Manchester City face Manchester United and then Arsenal, which could instantly see potential wildcard pick Erling Haaland struggle to leave his usual mark.

Manchester City's ErlingHaalandcelebrates scoring their third goal with Oscar Bobb and Tijjani Reijnders

More factors to consider are form, injuries and how far players have travelled during the international break. Whilst it may seem tempting to jump the gun and welcome Alexander Isak into your side, for example, the last thing you want is to spend £10.4m on a player who is unlikely to start until he is deemed ready to go after missing pre-season.

So, when is the best time to wildcard? Well, gameweek six stands out. By that point, it will be clear whether a new signing can hit the ground running or if they are even in a starting role. Any lasting effects of the international break will also be known by this point and the fixtures become more routine for the likes of Haaland and Man City, while Arsenal also have an easier swing coming in October.

Best wildcard picks in FPL

By holding out until matchday six, several impressive options should emerge – including Isak. By that point, he should be ready to go and in a Liverpool side that already includes Florian Wirtz, Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike no less. The Swede is almost a guarantee for goals and is far cheaper than Haaland or new teammate Salah, who cost £14.1m and £14.5m respectively.

To partner the Premier League’s record signing, getting Joao Pedro in is a must at this stage. At £7.6m, he is a bargain buy and should now start most games under Enzo Maresca following Liam Delap’s injury.

Having Ekitike, Haaland and Pedro together – albeit whilst sacrificing Isak and/or Salah – gives you three of the hottest players in the league right now and would leave room for a strong midfield.

Elsewhere, Xavi Simons at £7m is also one to watch as a player who scored 11 goals and assisted eight more for RB Leipzig last season before recently joining Tottenham. The arrival of several fresh faces in North London has thrown up some interesting FPL decisions to make, but Thomas Frank and Daniel Levy did not spend £52m on a benchwarmer, so his minutes should be secure once he settles, perhaps at the cost of Brennan Johnson.

If you’re searching for a differential, new Crystal Palace signing Yeremy Pino (£6.0m) looked fantastic off the bench in his Gameweek 3 debut, and the injuries to Ismaila Sarr and Adam Wharton mean he is almost certain to start most matches from here on out.

In defence, at least one Arsenal defender becomes a must as their fixtures turn from Gameweek 7 onwards, with Gabriel at £6.1m the safest for minutes while Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori – both £5.6m – offer a goal threat.

Continuing that theme, the obvious pick in goal is David Raya, but keep an eye on Marco Bizot at Aston Villa, who now appears to be Unai Emery’s favoured choice at just £4.5m.

What to expect: RCB hope to stay aliveThe spotlight is on RCB. Placed fourth, the defending champions will have to win both their remaining games, starting with this contest against bottom-placed UP Warriorz, and then wait for other results to go their way to qualify for the playoffs. Losing even one out of the next two games will put them out of contention. Warriorz, meanwhile, were knocked out by Gujarat Giants on Friday and will look to finish the season on a high.Four straight defeats after two successive wins have left RCB with more questions than answers. The batting has looked overly dependent on Ellyse Perry, with Smriti Mandhana in the middle of a lean patch. The rest of the line-up has been inconsistent. KL Rahul plays down India's injury worries ahead of NZ clash

KL Rahul has suggested Mohammed Shami and Rohit Sharma will be niggle-free and good to go in India’s last Champions Trophy group game, against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday. India go into that match a week on from Shami having not bowled out against Pakistan because of trouble with his shin, and Rohit showing signs of wear in his hamstring – both players went off the field at various stages of Pakistan’s innings.”I don’t know too much but from whatever I know I think everything seems pretty okay,” Rahul said on Friday. “There’s no real concerns about anyone missing games as far as I know. We’ll probably know more in today’s training.”Yeah everyone’s been in the gym, everyone’s been at training the last time as well, so yeah [there were previously] some concerns but I don’t think it’s too much.”Related

  • Is Rohit India's best contemporary ODI batter at ICC tournaments?

India, like New Zealand, go into this game knowing they have already qualified for the semi-finals. And for India, that semi-final will come two days later, on March 4. Will the short turnaround in games prompt India to rest anyone? “Luckily I am not in the leadership group to have to make that decision,” Rahul said. “But I am sure there will be some temptation and we have been in these positions before where, if there is an opportunity, you can try out the players who haven’t gotten games.”But I don’t know if that will happen in a Champions Trophy. And I don’t know if that will happen in tomorrow’s game. We only have one day’s break before the semi-finals [but] we have gotten a six-day break now. So, we probably want all of the players to play the game and get a little bit of time in the middle. This is my version. I don’t know, it might be very different tomorrow.”Rahul the batter was not needed against Pakistan, but in India’s first game, against Bangladesh, he made 41 not out off 47 from No. 6 to take the team home in a chase of 229 on a tricky Dubai track. He expects the pitch to continue to be tricky to bat on. “The wicket is slow. Going in, any new batter, he finds it very difficult to rotate the strike. The pace of the wicket is slightly different to the [preceding] England series we have played [in India]. So, it takes a little bit of time to get used to it.”But the good thing is that we have played in Dubai before. And we played on pitches like this. We had a fair understanding that when we come here, this will be the challenge. So we were mentally a little bit prepared and we came here a week early and the practice we were doing also had similar wickets. It just gave us a little bit of time to get used to it.”I think on such wickets, whoever is the set batter, the longer he plays, the better it is for the team. And that’s what gives you that extra 30-40 runs. Because if the wickets keep going, the new batters will find it a bit difficult.”KL Rahul has taken the gloves off Rishabh Pant in ODIs•MB Media/Getty Images

Rahul the keeper, meanwhile, knows he is keeping a certain Rishabh Pant out. While it does play on his mind, Rahul said it doesn’t change the way he plays his cricket. “There is [pressure] – I won’t lie. I mean, he’s obviously a very, very talented player and he’s shown all of us what he can do and how aggressive [he can be] and how quickly he can change the game.”So yes, there’s always the temptation for the team as well, whoever is the captain, the coach… There’s always that temptation to either play him or play me. There’s always that.”But yeah, for me, if I’m given the opportunity, I try and see what I can do best. I am not trying to compete with Rishabh or I am not trying to play like him. When he gets his opportunities I am sure he is not going to try to play like anybody else. He is picked on the basis of how he can play and what he can provide for the team and the same applies to me. So I try and do what I do best and try and stick to my game.”In his role as keeper, Rahul also had high praise for Shami. “Funnily, somehow, in every game he’ll make sure that I’m diving full-length,” Rahul quipped. “He gives me one or two opportunities to be brilliant behind the stumps or look stupid sometimes.”With wicketkeeping, I think [he’s] one of the few bowlers that the ball really wobbles. Him and sometimes Bumrah when he bowls in the second or third spell. So that’s been very challenging.”And yeah, [Shami is] very accurate. That’s something that not many people talk about. Everyone talks about how he’s gifted and how he can get the ball to seam in any condition and how upright his seam is. But not many people talk about how accurate he is and how sharp he is. He can surprise you with his pace. Just the other day in the nets he hit me straight in the [helmet] badge. So, all of these things make him a very difficult bowler to play against.”Really happy to have him back and I think he’s very close to his best.”

Garnacho will love him: Chelsea in "further talks" to sign £52m phenom

In a shock to nobody, it’s been another busy summer of transfer activity for Chelsea this year.

The Conference League champions have backed Enzo Maresca in a significant way so far, offloading players deemed no longer good enough and replacing them with a host of exciting talents.

The likes of Jamei Gittens, Joao Pedro, Jorrel Hato and Liam Delap could all develop into world-beaters in West London, and with a few days left until the window slams shut, the Blues are closing in on even more signings, like Alejandro Garnacho.

Yet, if reports are to be believed, Chelsea are looking at bringing in another young attacker, someone the Argentine will love playing with.

Chelsea target dream teammate for Garnacho

Of all the transfer sagas Chelsea have been involved with this summer, the one that has felt like it’s dragged on the longest concerns Garnacho.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, after months of stories touting the Manchester United ace for a move to Stamford Bridge, it is finally happening, with a report revealing that his medical was planned to take place earlier today.

The 21-year-old might not be the final signing the West Londoners make this summer, though, as they’re now being heavily linked with another young talent, someone Garnacho will love playing with.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachoduring training

At least that is according to a recent report from Ben Jacobs, who claims that Chelsea are still very interested in Fermin Lopez.

In fact, the journalist has revealed that the Blues are now in “further talks” with the player’s camp, and that “initial club-to-club contact has also taken place.”

However, to sell the young attacker, the Spanish giants want a fee in excess of €60m, which is approximately £52m.

Yet, for a player as talented and promising as Lopez, that may be a fee worth paying, especially as he could be the perfect teammate for Garnacho.

Why Garnacho will love Lopez

It might sound rather simplistic, and it probably is, but one of the most significant reasons Garnacho will love playing with Lopez at Chelsea is his output.

Despite being just 21 years old for almost the entirety of last season, the Spanish ace was impressively effective for the Catalan giants.

For example, in 46 appearances, totalling just 2039 minutes, “creative” star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, scored eight goals and provided ten assists.

That means he managed to average a goal involvement every 2.55 games, or every 113.27 minutes, which is undeniably impressive for someone his age.

Moreover, it highlights the fact that he’s more than capable of providing plentiful goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates, which will be music to the ears of the United ace.

More than that, though, it also makes it clear that he can be an effective goalscorer himself, which in turn could help improve the Argentine’s assist tally.

In addition to his raw output, another reason the Madrid-born gem will love playing with the 22-year-old is his positional versatility.

The reason is twofold, as on the one hand, the El Campillo-born phenom’s ability to play in midfield and on the wing means he’ll have plenty of opportunities to form a partnership with his potential new teammate.

On the other hand, it means he’ll be able to cover for him when he needs a rest.

Finally, the fact that the “spectacular” midfielder, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, is practically the same age as the former Atlético Madrid prospect means they’ll be able to grow and develop alongside one another, further cementing the potential partnership they could build.

Ultimately, while the price might be a little on the high side, Lopez looks like he could be an excellent signing for Chelsea and a brilliant teammate for Garnacho.

Rangers expected to sign new versatile defender in late deadline day deal

After yet another draw in the Scottish Premiership, Rangers are now expected to sign a defensive reinforcement in a last-gasp deadline day deal for Russell Martin.

Rangers set for busy deadline day

Without a win in their first four Scottish Premiership games under Russell Martin after their latest draw against Old Firm rivals Celtic, Rangers are in desperate need of last-minute additions.

The Gers have had a nightmare few weeks under the former Southampton boss, from crashing out of the Champions League to then losing star man Hamza Igamane, but could yet enjoy a turning point if they get deadline day right.

The manager himself, meanwhile, once again chose to remain optimistic after his side’s 0-0 draw against rivals Celtic in what was a poor game between two sides that haven’t been at their true best as of yet this season.

Martin is adamant that the 49ers still have faith in his project and that could once again be showcased in the transfer market. With the hours ticking away on deadline day, the American owners are still reportedly eyeing some last-minute deals.

The likes of Youssef Chermiti, for example, are still on Rangers’ radar whilst another deal for a much-needed defensive reinforcement is expected to reach completion.

Rangers expected to sign Cornelius

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are now expected to sign Derek Cornelius from Marseille in a last-minute loan deal. The central defender, who can also play as a left-back, should offer Martin some welcome cover in both areas and potentially the addition that finally helps his side back to winning ways.

As highlighted by the Rangers Journal, Cornelius is particularly one to watch in possession and that should suit Martin’s style of play far more than his current options.

The Marseille man particularly stands out for his progressive passing ability, which is something Rangers have arguably lacked. As much as he is a defensive addition, having a defender who is capable of ending an opposition’s press with one line-breaking pass can quickly turn defence into attack in rapid fashion.

Meanwhile, at 27 years old, Cornelius is not an inexperienced option like Rangers have already signed this summer. He should be able to hit the ground running from the off at Ibrox.
