Crystal Palace made club-record £37m bid for "commanding" Guehi replacement

Crystal Palace submitted a club-record bid for a Marc Guehi replacement, which was knocked back by his club, it has been revealed.

Guehi stays at Selhurst Park after crazy deadline day

Guehi looked poised to move to Anfield on transfer deadline day, with Liverpool agreeing a fee for the centre-back, but the move fell through, given that Palace weren’t able to bring in adequate cover.

There have been widespread reports suggesting Oliver Glasner threatened to resign if the captain was sold, which may have played a big part in Steve Parish’s decision-making, with the chairman clearly keen to retain his FA Cup-winning manager.

It seems as though things would’ve panned out differently if a replacement had been brought in for the 25-year-old, and it wasn’t for a lack of trying, with the Eagles making a deadline day move for Brighton & Hove Albion defender Igor Julio on loan.

According to a report from Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), another centre-back target was in Crystal Palace’s sights, with it being revealed they made an offer of around €42m (£37m) for Inter Milan’s Yann Bisseck.

Yann Bisseck and Inter Milan celebrate reaching the Champions League final.

However, the Serie A club blocked a move, as they didn’t feel the bid was high enough, given the 24-year-old’s age and versatility, while he also displayed little desire to complete a move to Selhurst Park.

Palace clearly hold Bisseck in high regard, given that he would’ve been their club-record signing if the £37m offer was accepted, eclipsing the £32m fee paid for Christian Benteke in 2016, but in some ways, it is a bonus they will now have their captain for the rest of the campaign.

"Commanding" Bisseck could've been ideal Guehi heir

Indeed, it is a bonus to retain the services of Guehi until January at the very least, with the England international putting in a top performance last time out, scoring a wonder goal and helping his side keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 win at Aston Villa.

However, it is also a blow that Palace are now set to miss out on a transfer fee, with the former Chelsea man now able to leave on a free contract at the end of the campaign, and he is clearly frustrated the deal fell through.

If the offer for Bisseck had been accepted, Palace might not be in this situation, given that the German could’ve been an ideal replacement, having been lauded as a “commanding” centre-back by scout Ben Mattinson.

Moreover, the Inter defender has outperformed Guehi in some key defensive metrics over the past year, while he is also more comfortable in possession of the ball.

Everton think they can land £50m star Rooney loves for bargain fee in 2026

Everton look to be enjoying a new era under David Moyes and could be set to launch an offensive to complete a bargain move once the New Year comes around.

Everton willing to trigger Omar El Hilali's release clause

The summer window saw an influx of arrivals at the Hill Dickinson Stadium that marked the start of a new era for all involved, with Jack Grealish being the pick of the bunch after claiming the Premier League Player of the Month award.

While the England international impressed in a 0-0 draw against former club Aston Villa on Saturday, Everton have already made Espanyol full-back Omar El Hilali one of their main priorities come January and plan to trigger his £26 million release clause once the mid-season market opens.

After trying and failing to land him during the summer, Moyes may now act to bring in some competition on the right-hand side of defence for Jake O’Brien, putting another piece of the jigsaw in place as the Toffees continue to probe on the transfer front.

Solidity is a quality that has underpinned the Scot’s sides over the years, but that also needs to be tempered with offensive quality, something that slowly appears to be emerging due to the Friedkin Group’s investment power.

Despite the window being closed, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has emerged as a free agent target for Everton, potentially offering a balance of the two qualities in the engine room.

Optimism is growing on the blue half of Merseyside and supporters appear willing to stick with Moyes’ blueprint as his side find their niche in the Premier League, and they may now be ready to sanction a bargain move come 2026.

Everton hopeful of bargain permanent Jack Grealish transfer

According to The Telegraph, Everton are hopeful they can sign Jack Grealish for less than his £50 million transfer option included in his loan agreement at Manchester City.

The outlet claim a bargain deal may be possible due to his clause being a result of accountancy rather than being set in stone, given he has two years on his deal at the Etihad Stadium and his market value at the club was factored in before Pep Guardiola sanctioned his departure.

Everton's "incredible" star is quietly having a bigger impact than Grealish

Everton appear to have turned a corner with David Moyes at the helm this season, with Jack Grealish central to it. He’s not alone, however…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 12, 2025

Loved by Wayne Rooney due to his character on and off the field, Grealish has registered four assists in his first five matches for the Toffees across all competitions and has endeared himself as a fan favourite due to some dazzling displays.

However, his wages are said to be around £12 million per year and that may be a sticking point in negotiations, meaning a free transfer may be the only way for Everton to afford the Three Lions man if they were to take on his full earnings.

Time will tell on that front, but it is clear to see that Everton and Grealish have hit it off instantly and their relationship is worth continuing at any cost.

Liverpool urged to DROP Mohamed Salah by club legend Jamie Carragher in wake of Man Utd defeat as out-of-sorts attacker desperately searches for form

Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool to drop Mohamed Salah, with the Egyptian superstar putting in another lacklustre performance as the Reds suffered a dramatic 2-1 defeat to old adversaries Manchester United. Salah has been a talismanic presence at Anfield down the years, but questions are now being asked of whether he should be one of the first names on the team sheet.

Salah bench duty: Should Egyptian superstar be dropped?

Salah has registered 248 goals for Liverpool through 412 appearances, rewriting the history books along the way and landing four Premier League Golden Boots. He drew a blank, though, against United as the Red Devils left Merseyside with all three points – courtesy of Harry Maguire’s late header.

Salah has now gone seven games in the English top-flight without registering a non-penalty goal – his longest barren run in that department since linking up with Liverpool in 2017. Faith continues to be shown in him after a contract extension was agreed over the summer, with Arne Slot reluctant to tinker with the right-hand side of his attack.

There is, however, no ignoring Salah’s uncharacteristic struggles. With those in mind, Reds legend Carragher believes it is time to take the 33-year-old out of the firing line. He has told : “I think we're at that stage now where Mo Salah shouldn't be a guaranteed starter every week. I do think this is a real conundrum for the manager going forward.”

AdvertisementAFPAway day plan: Salah to be a substitute on the road

Carragher also said in the Sky Sports studio when helping to cover Liverpool’s disappointing loss against United: “I don't think Salah should be like a Virgil van Dijk where it's like 'first name on the team sheet'. Liverpool have got two away games – in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then they go to Brentford. I don't think Salah should start both of those games.

“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top, around the edge of the box and more often than not he scores in those situations today. But I do think in the away games and helping your full-back, I don't think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he's in.

“Would he be OK with that? Probably not. But when you get to a certain age you have to understand that, especially when you're not playing well, where's your argument? It's different if you're banging in the goals and your manager makes a tactical decision and you're frustrated. I don't think Mo Salah's in any position to complain if he was left out of one of the next two away games.”

Liverpool told to build around Wirtz and Isak

Liverpool spent big in the summer window of 2025, breaking the British transfer record in deals for German playmaker Florian Wirtz and Swedish striker Alexander Isak – with £240 million ($322m) being invested in two stars of the present and future.

Quizzed on who the Reds now need to be building around, with Salah only tied to terms through to 2027, Carragher added: “It has to be Isak and Wirtz because they've spent the money on them and their age profile compared to Salah.”

AFPWho plays instead of Salah? Carragher has a solution

Carragher believes that, especially on the road, Liverpool need to consider using another new recruit – Dutch star Jeremie Frimpong – as an alternative to Salah on the right wing. He went on to say: “These things have got to start coming into the manager's head. Maybe [he needs] to have a little look at Frimpong in an away game, who can maybe help the full-back back a little bit more defensively, and give you a little bit of pace on the outside, as we saw when he came on.”

Frimpong replaced Salah against United and posed a few problems as Liverpool pushed for a late equaliser, although that search was fruitless. He will be in contention for a starting berth when the Reds travel to Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday, on his return to Germany after leaving Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

It remains to be seen what role Salah will play in that contest, with a place among the substitutes having already been filled in one European fixture this season away at Galatasaray. Slot’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat there and have now come unstuck in their last four matches across all competitions.

Remaining IPL 2025 league games to have extra 120 minutes for rain interruptions

League games generally have 60 minutes extra allotted for delays, while only playoffs were supposed to have two extra hours previously

Cricinformed: Bumrah, the gold standard for a T20 bowler

In an effort to complete a full 20-overs match in case of rain interruptions, the IPL has decided to add 120 minutes of extra time for the remaining nine matches in the league phase of the 2025 season.Normally the two-hour extra time allowance has been part of the playing conditions for the playoffs only. However, with the tournament resuming after a week-long suspension and the onset of monsoon across India, the IPL has decided to ensure play as far as possible.Eight of the nine remaining league matches are scheduled to be played in the evening barring the Gujarat Titans-Chennai Super Kings game which will be played in the afternoon on May 25. As per the playing conditions, the regulation completion time for an evening match is 10.50pm and 6.50pm for an afternoon game (all timings IST).This means with an extra two-hour allowance now, a full 20-overs match can start as late as 5.30pm (afternoon game) or 9.30pm (evening game). For a minimum five-overs game, the cut-off time for an afternoon match will be 7.56 pm (including 10-minute changeover) and 11.56 pm for an evening game.So far in IPL 2025, three matches have been abandoned due to rain, with teams sharing points, while two other games have been shortened due to the weather.Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Kolkata was the first game to be abandoned due to rain, followed by the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)-Delhi Capitals (DC) match in Hyderabad. The first match that was scheduled after the week-long suspension of the tournament, between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and KKR, was then abandoned without a ball bowled in Bengaluru.PBKS earlier defeated RCB in a shortened game, while Gujarat Titans (GT) came up trumps against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a match that saw multiple stoppages.Due to a yellow alert issued by the meteorological department in Bengaluru that has predicted “heavy to very heavy rainfall” in the city until Thursday, RCB’s final home game against SRH on May 23 has been shifted to Lucknow.

Not just Shaw: Amorim must drop Man Utd ace who's becoming a huge "problem"

Despite finishing 15th in the Premier League last season, judgment was withheld on Ruben Amorim’s tenure as Manchester United manager after taking the reins midway through the 2024/25 campaign.

The 40-year-old was subsequently handed £200m worth of funds to improve the first-team squad and help the club rise up the table after a dismal year last time around.

However, it’s safe to say pressure has continued to mount on the manager’s shoulders, especially after falling to a 3-1 defeat against Brentford on Saturday afternoon.

Such a result was the Red Devils’ ninth Premier League defeat in their last 15 outings, highlighting the issues currently facing the side at present and in the near future.

Despite the latest slump in form, the board still continue to back Amorim, a decision which could raise eyebrows given the failure to right the wrongs of last campaign.

His decision-making in the role has certainly been called into question as of late, with his constant selection of one first-team member, one that has baffled many supporters of the club.

Luke Shaw’s lack of form at Man Utd in 2025/26

After a torrid run of injuries over the last couple of seasons, defender Luke Shaw has enjoyed an injury-free run in the first-team squad in the opening stages of 2025/26.

The 30-year-old has started every single game in England’s top-flight to date, but that’s not to say he’s met the standards expected of a United defender in the Premier League.

He’s operated on the left-hand side of Amorim’s back three, but has come under fire for his lack of impact – rightfully so given the poor figures he’s produced over recent weeks.

The Englishman has only ranked in the 16th percentile for duels won, whilst ranking in the 82nd percentile for fouls committed – often struggling to contain the opposition’s attackers.

Shaw has only ranked in the 31st percentile for passes completed, often hitting possession away and being just as ineffective with the ball as he is without.

The injuries have ultimately taken their toll on his career, with the defender no way near the level of an English top-flight side, with Amorim needing to take action and drop him from his side.

However, he’s not alone in struggling to make a positive impact, with one other first-team member also enduring an extremely below par start to the 2025/26 season.

The United player who’s becoming a “problem” in 2025/26

Seven points from the first six games of 2025/26 is a hugely disappointing return for United, especially given the huge spending during the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal for the club in the recent defeat against Brentford, but unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to catapult the Red Devils to a third league win of the season.

Bryan Mbeumo blanked against his former employers, but the Cameroonian international has already netted twice for the club after his £71m transfer in the summer.

However, despite the heavy spending, alarm bells are still ringing out at Old Trafford, with the manager still not getting the best out of his current crop of players.

Bruno Fernandes was a shining light last campaign, notching 37 combined goals and assists in all competitions – often saving the side in numerous key moments.

The Portuguese international, who’s the current club captain, has since had to take up a new role after the summer spending spree – subsequently dropping into a deeper midfield role.

While he’s previously operated in such a position, it’s now become his permanent role in the side, but one that has yet to have a desired effect in the early stages of the new season.

The 30-year-old has failed to match his heights from 2024/25, scoring twice to date, but ultimately costing the side in key moments – in a complete switch from his success last time around.

Bruno has already missed two spot kicks in the Premier League this campaign, with his latest against the Bees undoubtedly costing them the opportunity to walk away from the clash with at least a point.

Away from his spot kick failures, he’s been unable to dominate in the centre of the park, often being overrun in such an area – once again showcasing the failure to land a new ball-winning option during the off-season.

The 30-year-old’s lack of impact has led to analyst Adam Clery labelling the captain as a “problem” with the summer additions certainly contributing to his recent demise.

It’s clear that Bruno is a player who possesses a lot of talent, but his attitude and lack of leadership at the heart of the side has undoubtedly added to the poor form once more.

Amorim desperately needs to get a grip on the situation to prevent the club spiralling out of control – which could even lead to the former Sporting CP boss losing his job.

Nearly a year into the job, it’s clear the 40-year-old still doesn’t know his best central midfield partnership, but it’s clear Bruno needs to be taken out of such a position in the coming matches.

Saved by Martinelli: Arteta must drop Arsenal star who lost 100% of duels

Arsenal secured a phenomenal last-gasp point against Manchester City at the Emirates this afternoon, highlighting the title credentials the Gunners possess.

Mikel Arteta’s side looked set to fall to defeat against Pep Guardiola’s side, but the 93rd-minute strike from Gabriel Martinelli secured a vital point in their hunt for Premier League title glory.

Such a result maintained the club’s unbeaten record in the 2025/26 campaign, but has seen them fall a couple of points behind Liverpool at the top of the table.

However, given the circumstances around the late equaliser, the result will certainly feel like it’s a point gained rather than two dropped – especially after it kept their unbeaten start intact.

Such a result will undoubtedly highlight to Arteta the changes he needs to make going forward, with one player deserving of a recall to the starting eleven in the near future.

Gabriel Martinelli’s heroics against Manchester City

Over the last couple of months, Martinelli has come into huge question for his lack of impact at Arsenal – subsequently leading to the huge investment over the summer.

However, the Brazilian has proved some of his doubters wrong over recent days, producing some impressive displays even before his cameo against Guardiola’s side.

He scored off the bench against Atlético Bilbao on Tuesday night, before doing the same again this afternoon – staking his claim for a regular first-team starting role again.

The 24-year-old only managed five touches of the ball after being brought on for the remaining 10 minutes, but it was his first time finish which was the decisive one.

Martinelli subsequently completed 100% of the passes he attempted and placed 100% of his shots on target, further highlighting the impressive cameo he produced off the bench.

Despite the showing of the Brazilian, one other player failed to deliver at the Emirates, with Arteta needing to take action and drop him from the side in their next outing.

The Arsenal player who needs to be dropped after City

The draw may give reasons to be positive for the weeks ahead, but it can’t gloss over the issues that arose in the early stages – most notably in the first half of the contest.

Arsenal were on the back foot, subsequently going a goal down after Erling Haaland’s strike, but were unable to break down the Citizens, given their low defensive line.

Arteta made a mistake in not starting an attacking midfielder, leaving Eberechi Eze on the substitutes bench and deciding to operate with Mikel Merino alongside Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice.

He also started with Noni Madueke off the right-hand side once again, but it was an afternoon to forget for the Englishman, as he failed to have the desired impact.

The 23-year-old has been filling the void after Bukayo Saka’s injury, but he was replaced by the aforementioned star at the break upon his return to first-team action.

However, his withdrawal from the contest was certainly warranted, with his underlying figures highlighting how dismal his showing was in North London today.

Madueke only managed 32 touches of the ball, missing a big chance in the process, and often being wasteful with the chances that were presented his way in the final third.

He also failed to complete any of the dribbles he attempted, whilst also losing 100% of the duels he entered – often being dominated by young full-back Nico O’Reilly.

The winger also registered five crosses, but not one of them found a player in red, subsequently achieving a 0% success rate – further showcasing his lack of positive impact.

As a result of his showing, Madueke was handed a measly 6/10 match rating by GOAL’s Sean Walsh – topping off what was a dismal afternoon for the £50m addition.

After such a showing, Arteta needs to drop the attacker from his starting eleven, with Saka needing to come back into the fold after his return from injury.

However, the biggest talking point will be Martinelli after his late goal, with the Brazilian undoubtedly saving the day in what was a pretty lacklustre showing at the Emirates.

Rodgers says "excellent" under the radar Celtic star is impressing in training

Celtic were in action against Hibernian on Saturday, and one star caught the eye more than most for Brendan Rodgers on an occasion that ultimately ended in frustration.

Celtic have to settle for a point against Hibernian

Despite their best efforts, Celtic had to settle for a point at home to Hibernian on Saturday in a goalless draw mired by frustration due to their lack of potency in the final third.

Statistically, the Scottish Premiership holders racked up 26 shots and an Expected Goals tally of 3.00, per Fotmob. Nevertheless, some excellent stops from Raphael Sallinger and a host of missed chances meant a share of the spoils at Parkhead.

Opting not to criticise his players too much after a day where luck wasn’t on their side, Rodgers praised Celtic for their ‘dominant’ performance, also offering credit to Hibernian for their robust display. He stated via BBC Sport:

“I was happy with the performance. I think every metric in the game, we were dominant. I thought today our football was really good, we went through the pitch well but we just lacked that killer instinct in the box. But I also think they defended the box really well so we need to credit Hibs for that.”

Kelechi Iheanacho couldn’t convert his chances against Hibernian despite being heavily involved in attacking moves, while Arne Engels and Luke McCowan didn’t do enough to convince supporters they are worthy of a regular place in the engine room after rare starts.

Perspective is needed in light of the Hoops’ opportunity creation, but they are now two points behind Heart of Midlothian in the league standings as they now focus on facing Braga in the Europa League next Thursday.

Regardless, one Celtic performer did take his chance against Hibernian, earning praise from the manager after an impactful display on an otherwise forgettable afternoon.

“Working with so many South American players, it’s an obligation, they’re not timid, they’re aggressive and strong and very committed and when we have the ball, he wants to play forward and come into those nice spaces.

“He’s made a really good impact coming into training. That attitude I like. You need that personality at a club like this. Some can be overawed, and you have to be patient, but he was excellent.”

Ultimately, Saracchi was a shining light for Celtic and proved his worth as an able deputy to Kieran Tierney, who is still working to reach full fitness after his summer move from Arsenal.

The Uruguay international has made an impressive start to life at the club and supporters will be excited to see more of the left-back in weeks to come.
