Charlie Allison stars with maiden century to leave Surrey with testing final day

Charlie Allison, a 20-year old with a previous first-class best of just 28, hit a memorable maiden hundred to stun champions Surrey at the Kia Oval.Allison’s brilliant 140, in his sixth first-class match, helped Essex rack up a second innings 479 and leave Surrey with an unlikely victory target of 418. By stumps, in eight overs’ batting, they reached 32 without loss.Surrey’s six-pronged pace attack was neutered on an easing pitch, leaving Rory Burns’s side facing a stiff final-day battle for a draw to maintain their unbeaten start to the Rothesay County Championship season.Towards the end of the innings of his young life, Colchester-born Allison even hit a weary Daniel Worrall for two sixes over long on and there were also 19 fours in a 235-ball epic spanning just over five hours.Allison, remarkably, had come in on a pair after being caught behind off New Zealand Test all-rounder Nathan Smith from his fifth ball in Essex’s first innings of 217. In nine previous first-class innings, since making his debut last month, he had made only 154 runs at an average of 17.11.But when he tucked his 185th ball to deep mid-on and sauntered for a single, Allison was coolness personified as he initially hardly reacted to his achievement until removing his helmet and raising both arms in the air to acknowledge generous applause from a sizeable third-day crowd.Noah Thain, his contemporary from Essex age groups and recent England U19 teams, gave Allison a bear hug and the pair then continued an impressive seventh wicket stand that eventually raised 116 and, in effect, batted Surrey all but out of the match.Thain made 50 before holing out to long off and, earlier, Allison had helped Tom Westley – who fought hard for his own 50 – to blunt a Surrey attack already up against it after Paul Walter’s superlative 118 on day two and his magnificent opening stand of 188 with Dean Elgar.Essex had resumed 133 ahead on 195 for two, and Elgar could not believe it when, having added just four runs to his gritty overnight 60 not out, he attempted to square drive a full ball angled across him by Worrall and succeeded only in slicing it all the way to third man where Smith took the catch running to his left.If that was a bonus for Surrey, as Worrall began the day with a testing spell of 7-5-5-1, then they were soon being frustrated as Westley and Allison added 80 for the fourth wicket.Allison was fortunate to get off the mark with an inside-edged four, the ball narrowly missing off stump as he tried to square cut a delivery from Worrall that was too close to him for the stroke. But the youngster settled his nerves by soon hitting Smith beautifully to the cover boundary, his second scoring shot, and then taking further fours off his pads against Jamie Overton and through extra cover off Tom Lawes.Overton even touched 88mph in a pacy spell in which he was always in the mid-80s, but Westley was equal to the challenge with fours through extra cover and tucked neatly off his pads. The Essex captain then clipped Lawes wide of mid on for another boundary. On 35, Westley survived a difficult low chance to Sam Curran, diving to his right, as he clipped Lawes off his legs but the Essex total had moved on to 266 for three by the time Surrey took the second new ball 20 minutes before lunch.Jordan Clark, nursing a sore toe, was brought on for his first bowl of the day immediately after lunch and, with his 10th ball, he had Westley athletically caught by Kurtis Patterson – diving to his right – at point. He had faced 114 balls, hitting seven fours.Worrall then pinned Matt Critchley leg-before for four, nine runs later, and at 294 for five it seemed as if Surrey were back in the game with almost five sessions remaining.Michael Pepper, however, hung around to make 18 in a 49-run stand with Allison, until Curran – finally thrown the ball for the 50th over of the day – struck with his seventh delivery to have Pepper caught behind. But Allison and Thain, the two 20-year-olds, capped a brilliant day for Essex by staying together for almost two hours after Pepper’s dismissal 45 minutes before tea. There were some fine shots, too, from both of them – though perhaps none better than the lofted straight drive by Allison off Lawes that took him to 117.Allison finally miscued a swipe at Clark, giving a simple return catch as the last few Essex wickets fell in a flurry of slogs, but whatever he goes on to achieve in his cricket career he will never forget this day.

'He'd have me out of there in one round!' – Wayne Rooney fight turned down by Premier League winner despite new career in boxing as Man Utd legend is offered sparring session

Premier League title winner Danny Simpson has, during an exclusive interview with GOAL, explained why he will be avoiding a boxing match with ex-Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney. Simpson has stepped into the ring, while Rooney is a big fight fan, but no clash will be organised there due to close friends occupying very different weight classes.

  • Rooney back on punditry duty after coaching flops

Simpson formed part of United’s academy ranks when Rooney made his way to Old Trafford in 2004 as the most expensive teenager in world football at the time. Simpson made his competitive debut for United in 2007, with Rooney well on course to becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer by that point.

Rooney ended his United career with 253 goals and moved into management once he hung up his boots. Coaching endeavours have not played out as planned, with testing spells being taken in at Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle. The former England captain is now back on punditry duty.

Simpson explains why he will avoid Rooney fight

While stepping away from competitive sport, Rooney has hinted in the past that he would welcome the opportunity to lace up a pair of gloves. Simpson has already trodden that path, having faced YouTuber Danny Aarons in an exhibition bout that ended in a split decision draw.

Quizzed by GOAL on whether he would like to face off against Rooney, Simpson – speaking in association with – said: “Not Wazza, no! He’s a little bit bigger than me! He’s definitely a different weight and he’d have me out of there in one round! I’d give it a go in sparring. I’d spar with him, but I don’t think I’d put myself on the main stage with him. He is strong and I have seen him box a little bit. I’d definitely stay away from his weight class.”

  • Hearn & KSI react to Rooney's boxing wish

Simpson, who claimed the Premier League crown with Leicester in 2026, had previously told iFL TV in September 2024: “I’m seeing him next Saturday because we’ve got a charity game at Old Trafford against Celtic. Listen, I’d have a go with Wazza. He’s a boxer, I know he is. He’s been around it, everyone’s got to back themselves, so why not?”

While Simpson has changed his tune, Rooney has explored potential routes into the ring. Matchroom Boxing chief Eddie Hearn told the Peter Crouch Podcast: “Rooney can fight, I’ve spoken to Wayne. When Wayne has a drink, he’ll message me and he’ll start going, ‘I’ll fight him and I’ll fight him,’ and I get excited. Sometimes I get a message from Wayne saying, ‘Make me vs so and so, make that fight.’ I’ll look at it in the morning and go, ‘This is massive’. So I’ll message him back, ‘Few glasses of red or [are you serious?]’. Then he won’t reply and I’ll go, ‘Damn.’ But Wayne can fight.”

A spot on one of the cards for Misfits Boxing has also been discussed, with KSI saying of those proposals: “I think he's probably going to have to lose a bit of weight before he gets into the ring. But if he's actually serious about wanting to fight, then Misfits have their arms wide open.”

Kenny offer & documentary series: Next up for Rooney

Ex-Sheffield United and QPR goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has offered to provide opposition for Rooney after facing questions from the United great about his role in Manchester City’s dramatic Premier League title win in 2012 – with it Kenny that conceded Sergio Aguero’s iconic stoppage-time winner. He has told Boxing Social: “He keeps hammering me about that Aguero goal, so I think me and him need to sort it out in the ring. 13 years on, he’s still saying I let the goals in! It might have looked like I let them in but I didn’t!”

No imminent return to management appears to be on the cards for Rooney. Simpson has suggested that a role should be found for a club legend back at Old Trafford – in a coaching capacity – while the United icon is also preparing to star in a fly-on-the-wall documentary series from Disney+ alongside wife Coleen and their four sons.

Nuno told "special" West Ham star may be the world's best in his position, it's not Bowen

West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo oversaw a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Everton during his debut game in the Hammers dugout, and he’s now being told that there’s another world-class player in his new squad to rival Jarrod Bowen.

West Ham set for change under new boss Nuno Espírito Santo

Chairman David Sullivan followed the advice of fellow boardroom member Karren Brady, who was a big supporter of Nuno, and appointed the Portuguese on a three-year contract immediately after sacking Graham Potter last Saturday.

Potter was a popular figure among senior members of the West Ham squad and had significant backing behind-the-scenes, according to credible reports.

However, a string of poor results, not to mention the club’s second-worst win percentage of the Premier League era behind Avram Grant, forced Sullivan and co to pull the trigger.

Nuno wasted no time stepping into Potter’s shoes, with Tottenham’s former boss overseeing first-team training at Rush Green the very same day that Potter was sacked, as he prepared his team for a looming trip to Merseyside.

The tactician noticeably omitted midfielder James Ward-Prowse from his first ever West Ham matchday squad – a player he didn’t fancy at Nottingham Forest either – and it’s since been reported that the 30-year-old is resigned to leaving in January (GiveMeSport).

Wolves midfielder James Ward-Prowse.

Ward-Prowse has already been told that he has no future at West Ham under Nuno, with the ex-Al-Ittihad coach wasting no time in stamping his authority on the team amid reports that Sullivan is also ready to back him in January.

There are suggestions that West Ham are prepared to bid up to £43m for AC Milan star Christian Pulisic, though it is highly debatable that the USA international would leave a potential Serie A title challenge midway through the campaign.

In any case, the squad is going to look slightly different under West Ham’s new manager.

That being said, alongside the obviously undroppable Bowen, summer signing El Hadji Malick Diouf is already making quite an impression.

West Ham told El Hadji Malick Diouf might be the best left-back in the world

The 20-year-old, who joined West Ham in July for around £19 million from Slavia Prague, is already looking like an absolute bargain.

Malick Diouf’s marauding pace down the left-hand side has already wreaked havoc at times, with the Senegal international bursting past two Everton players before putting in a delightful cross in the build up to Bowen’s equaliser at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday.

The defender undoubtedly sent a message to Nuno with that moment of sheer quality, and members of the media are convinced that he could be something special.

YouTuber and football content creator ‘CaniSports’ told West Ham they might have the best left-back in world football, while Sky presenter Joe Thomlinson has already called Diouf “one of the finds of the season”.

Elsewhere, presenter Jamie Boyce branded the African a “special” player amidst a tongue-in-cheek verdict that Diouf could be one of the best players to ever wear Claret and Blue.

Meanwhile, journalist Muhammad Butt has already called Diouf “massively superior” to Man United’s Patrick Dorgu, hailing West Ham’s often criticised recruitment team in the process.

It is still very early days, and a lot of these verdicts may be deemed excitable to say the least.

However, what is clear is that Diouf has stood far above West Ham’s newest recruits so far, and Nuno will be hoping that is set to continue.

Liverpool now racing PSG to sign "excellent" £80m star likened to Desire Doue

Looking to spend big once again, Liverpool are reportedly going head-to-head with Paris Saint-Germain to sign an £80m talent who’s been compared to the French club’s own young superstar Desire Doue.

Liverpool international round-up

For a set of players that entered the international break off the back of three straight defeats in all competitions, Liverpool’s stars have enjoyed an impressive couple of weeks away with their nations.

Just last night, Dominik Szoboszlai found himself in the right place at the perfect time to tap home a last-gasp equaliser for Hungary against Portugal. Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister also found the back of the net for Argentina, and Cody Gakpo has also been in free-scoring form for the Netherlands.

In fact, almost every Liverpool star has enjoyed at least one moment to savour for their nations during the break. Virgil van Dijk found the back of the net, Giorgi Mamardashvili saved a penalty for Georgia and Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

Those moments should act as the perfect antidote to Liverpool’s recent form as they prepare to welcome rivals Manchester United to Anfield this weekend. It’s a game that the Reds must win as they look to regain some composure in the early days of their Premier League title defence.

The Reds still need a centre-back.

ByTom Cunningham Oct 14, 2025

The international break may have also allowed Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to plan ahead. They already smashed Liverpool’s transfer record twice in the summer to sign Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, but are now going head-to-head with PSG to sign an £80m star.

Liverpool racing PSG to sign Rogers

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are now racing PSG to sign Morgan Rogers, who Aston Villa value at as much as £80m ahead of next summer.

Whilst the England international still has five years left on his current deal, those at Villa Park still have plenty of PSR concerns to think about and may not have any choice but to accept a big-money offer if it arrives.

For a player of Rogers’ talent, that £80m fee could prove to be worth every penny for Liverpool, who have lacked a missing piece to their title-defending puzzle so far this season.

Compared to PSG star Doue for his unpredictability, dribbling and directness, Rogers has every chance of reaching the same level as the Frenchman with a move to Anfield.

Whether Unai Emery is keen to let his star man go is another question, however. Described as “excellent” by England boss Thomas Tuchel, Rogers is vital to any ambitions that those in the Midlands have already set their sights on.

Hardik, Santner not completing their overs 'an opportunity missed' for MI

Between them, Hardik and Santner bowled just four overs, possibly because of Shreyas Iyer’s presence in the middle

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jun-20252:30

Why didn’t Hardik and Santner complete their quota of overs?

In the end, Mumbai Indians’ (MI) 203 was not even enough to take the Punjab Kings (PBKS) chase into the last over. And that could well have been because of a couple of errors in judgment on the part of Hardik Pandya and the MI think tank in crunch moments in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2. Why didn’t Hardik himself bowl more than the two overs he did? Why did Mitchell Santner bowl just two overs? Why did Reece Topley bowl the 13th over? All this is in hindsight, of course, and while Santner being kept away because spin-destroyer Shreyas Iyer was batting might make sense, Hardik not bowling after the tenth was a puzzle.”First of all, Hardik, Santner and [Jasprit] Bumrah were going to be the three main bowlers, who had to bowl 12 overs together,” Varun Aaron said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “But Hardik and Santner have just bowled two overs each. I don’t know why Hardik didn’t bowl four overs in this game. This wicket, he has bowled so much on this wicket playing for GT, he had to bowl four overs.”Related

Sensational Shreyas Iyer powers PBKS to second IPL final

Hardik bowled the eighth over, giving away just two runs and picking up the wicket of the big-hitting Josh Inglis. The tenth went for 17. Nothing Hardik bowled was further up than a length, and five of the 12 balls he bowled were pace-off. He seemed to be doing the right things even if Iyer and Nehal Wadhera got runs off him in that second over.”He looked very difficult to get away, especially in his first over,” Aaron said. “Yeah, he went for a few in his second, but he should have still persevered because his plans were right, and he executed them really well: back of length, bouncers, slower bouncers…”Tom Moody, Aaron’s fellow panelist, felt that Trent Boult dropping Wadhera off the last ball of what turned out to be Hardik’s spell might have forced a change of plan.”Hardik should have had a two-for. That second over, that catch that you’d expect Trent Boult to take 99 times out of 100. He fresh-aired it. Not even a firm glove on it,” Moody said. “He should have bowled. He was executing what was required on that surface. And that was an opportunity that was missed. He should have had a two-for, and I agree, he should have come back and grabbed the bull by the horns, and said, ‘right, okay, I’m going to bowl in here’.”1:26

Moody: Dhir should be batting ahead of Hardik

If Hardik had bowled more, Topley, playing his first game of the season after two months of bowling in the nets, might not have come on for a third over – the 13th – and been carted for 19 runs, mainly by Iyer.”Topley looked like a bowler that was conditioned for nets but way off the mark for real, high-pressure, competitive cricket,” Moody said. “That’s what he was missing. It’s very hard to come from being on top of your game, feeling you’ve got rhythm, bowling good areas in the nets, to suddenly transferring that to a pressure-game situation.”It might have been the over that turned the game, Iyer’s hat-trick of sixes bringing the required run rate from 11.87 after the 12th to 10.85 after the 13th.Moody: ‘Hardik didn’t back Santner because of Shreyas’ presence’Santner finished a high-scoring IPL 2025 with an economy rate of 7.92. On Sunday night, his two overs went for 15 runs. He didn’t bowl anymore. Iyer is a great hitter of spin and Wadhera, the other batter for a large part of the chase – they added 84 for the fourth wicket – is a left-hand batter, making it an unfavourable match-up for Santner. But still…3:14

Rapid Fire review – Shreyas Iyer’s hat-trick of sixes turned the match

“I mean, you can look at it in different ways. I think Hardik looked at it because we knew that there were a couple of match-ups against Nehal and he didn’t want to get the game away from him,” Mahela Jayawardene, the MI head coach, said at the press conference after the game. “Then after that just the game went away from him because they had those two big overs [the 14th, from Boult, went for 14 runs]. After that he was a bit hesitant to bring Mitch back again.”There’s lots of ifs and buts – we could have done this, we could have done that – but I think when we executed those things in the past, it has worked for us and gone our way and today it didn’t. So I think the game is such that you have to make some decisions and sometimes it goes, sometimes it doesn’t, so we will reflect on that, have a debrief.”It wasn’t just Wadhera. Iyer was perceived as a danger for Santner too, Moody suggested.”[Hardik] needed to back Santner. I felt that he didn’t back Santner because of Shreyas’ presence at the crease. Because he is such a good player of spin, [Hardik] felt that Shreyas may take to him,” Moody said. “But I’d be backing the bowler. Santner is a very crafty bowler. International pedigree. He’s been there and done that in those moments. Back him!”

'Not normal' – Vincent Kompany attempts to calm 'hype' surrounding record-breaking Bayern Munich teenager Lennart Karl after impressive Champions League goal

Bayern Munich cruised past Club Brugge 4-0 on Wednesday, with 17-year-old Lennart Karl stealing the spotlight by scoring a stunning opener on his full Champions League debut while becoming the club’s youngest-ever scorer in the competition. Coach Vincent Kompany hailed the teenager's brilliance but urged restraint, calling the hype around him “not normal.”

  • Bayern’s dominance and Karl’s breakthrough performance

Bayern looked every bit the European powerhouse on Wednesday night, easing to a 4-0 victory over Brugge at the Allianz Arena. From the first whistle, the German champions dictated the tempo, pressing high and carving open spaces with fluid combinations. 17-year-old Karl, in the starting XI for just the third time this season, stunned the crowd within five minutes. Picking up the ball near the edge of the box, he weaved past two defenders and unleashed a curling left-footed strike into the top corner. The goal made Karl the youngest German and youngest Bayern player ever to score in the Champions League, etching his name in the club’s history books.

As the night went on, Bayern only tightened their grip. Harry Kane doubled the lead shortly after with his trademark precision, Luis Diaz added a third before half-time, and Chelsesa-loanee Nicolas Jackson sealed the result late in the game.

On the sidelines, Kompany’s reaction to Karl’s goal wasn’t one of exuberance but of quiet satisfaction as hails Karl's performance but urges him to stay focused on his path.

Kompany’s calls for calm and hard work amid Karl's hype

The post-match atmosphere was filled with excitement over Karl’s dream debut. Yet, the Belgian coach chose to anchor the conversation in perspective.

"This isn't normal. I'm not a fan of the hype he'll get now. I'm a fan of training and calm. We'll see what he shows and just move on," said Kompany in a post-match press conference.

It was a classic Kompany approach, acknowledging brilliance without letting emotion overshadow discipline. Since arriving at Bayern, the former Manchester City captain has emphasised the value of consistency, teamwork, and development over instant stardom.

Karl himself echoed that maturity beyond his years. "It's a lot of fun with the boys, everything is working out and I can learn a lot here," he said. "I have to build on that now and not stop just because I've scored a goal. I'm the type of player: I take my shots, I'm not afraid of my opponent. Now that I've scored the first goal, a lot of people are looking at me. But I don't really feel any pressure."

With their latest win over Brugge, the German giants maintain their perfect Champions League start, securing nine points to put them level with Paris Saint-Germain on both points and goal difference.

  • Lennart Karl's journey from Germany's fifth-tier to Bayern Munich

Karl’s rise through German football has been a story of steady progress and sharp discipline. The winger began his journey at Viktoria Aschaffenburg in Germany's Hessenliga, Germany's fifth tier league, where his close control and instinctive movement quickly set him apart. He moved to Eintracht Frankfurt’s youth setup in 2017, gaining exposure to more competitive systems before returning briefly to Viktoria in 2022.

Bayern signed him later that year, impressed by his maturity and technical intelligence. The transition was not immediate with Karl having to adapt to the physicality and tactical demands of the youth academy. But during the 2024-25 season, his performances became impossible to ignore. With 17 goals and eight assists in just nine appearances for Bayern’s U17 Nachwuchsliga Group F, Kompany’s staff promoted him to first-team training early in the 2025 campaign. What followed was a meteoric rise where he debuted at the Club World Cup in June, followed by his first Bundesliga appearance, and finally, the unforgettable Champions League night against Brugge.

Kompany’s renewal signals stability as focus shifts to key players

The victory over Brugge capped off an important week for Bayern, as the club announced the extension of Kompany’s contract until June 2029. The deal, kept entirely under wraps until official confirmation, signals deep trust in Kompany’s project.

With the manager's future confirmed, Bayern are now focusing on two vital contract renewals: Kane and Dayot Upamecano. Kane, who has had a phenomenal start with 20 goals in 12 games, is reportedly keen to extend his deal. Meanwhile, discussions with Upamecano are ongoing, centering primarily on his salary. Coach Kompany's influence will be essential in aligning the players' performance expectations with the club's long-term financial stability. And for Karl, the goal that stunned Europe might just be the beginning of a carefully guided rise, not a momentary spark.

Kishan signs short-term deal with Nottinghamshire

Ishan Kishan has signed a short-term deal with Nottinghamshire to play two County Championship fixtures this season. Kishan will replace Kyle Verreynne, who will be away on national duty as South Africa travel to Zimbabwe for a two-Test series later this month.Kishan is known for his limited-overs game, but has 3447 first-class runs in 58 games including 17 half-centuries and eight hundreds. The wicketkeeper-batter also has 118 catches and 11 stumpings. He will be eligible for selection against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on June 22 and Somerset in Taunton on June 29 and is looking forward to experiencing county cricket for the first time.Related

Better than Aarons: Rangers star may have just saved Russell Martin's job

Glasgow Rangers finally got their first win of the season in the Scottish Premiership to alleviate some of the pressure on head coach Russell Martin.

The Light Blues had failed to win any of their first five matches in the division, their worst start to a league campaign in 47 years, but finally got three points on the board on Sunday.

Max Aarons scored in the 94th minute to win the match for the Ibrox giants after coming off the bench to strike, scoring his first goal for the club since his loan move in the summer.

How Max Aarons won the game for Rangers

The former England U21 international popped up with a crucial goal that was desperately needed, because the Grs were staring down the face of six games without a win to start the season.

As heard in the clip above, Martin needed a goal from that corner and that is exactly what he got when Aarons evaded his marker to smash home a brilliant finish on the spin.

It was a goal that a striker would have been proud of. The way he moved to get away from his marker and then the finish to find the bottom corner was textbook centre-forward play, but it came from a right-back.

Whilst Aarons was the player who scored the winner, it may have been Nicolas Raskin who just saved Martin’s job at Ibrox with his performance against Livingston.

How Nicolas Raskin may have saved Russell Martin's job

Ironically, after being left out of the matchday squad for games against Celtic and Hearts by the manager, the Belgium international may have saved his job by heavily contributing to the 2-1 win for the Light Blues.

Martin is under a lot of pressure from some supporters, who protested against him before during the recent League Cup win over Hibernian, due to the nature of the results and performances this season.

A sixth game without a league win, after losing 1-0 to Genk on Thursday night, could have put the manager’s position into major doubt, at least from the outside looking in, which is why beating Livingston feels like a big moment for Martin.

It was a win that was largely orchestrated by the quality of Raskin in the middle of the park, because he showcased his ability in and out of possession throughout the game.

As you can see in the table above, the former Standard Liege star won the majority of his defensive duels and was not dribbled past a single time, which shows that he was incredibly reliable and solid defensively.

On top of that, Raskin won the penalty that James Tavernier missed in the first half and created three chances for his teammates in total, the last of which was his excellent delivery from the corner that Aarons scored from.

The 23-year-old star, who earned an 8/10 player rating from IbroxNews, never stopped running from the first whistle to the last, closing down opposition players, making unselfish runs to stretch the game, bursting beyond his man to spark attacks.

It was a terrific performance that was full of energy, grit, determination, and quality. Things that the team’s overall performances this season have been lacking.

Not Dyche or Gerrard: Rangers should axe Martin for future "elite manager"

With Russell Martin under intense pressure as Rangers boss, the 49ers should make a future “elite manager” their top target to replace him at Ibrox.

If Martin keeps his job and goes on to be a success at Ibrox, he may have Raskin to thank for his match-winning performance in midfield against Livingston in this game.
