Cavan Sullivan: The future USMNT star set to sign with Manchester City after being labelled the 'best 14-year-old in the world'

The Premier League champions are set to win the race for the Philadelphia Union academy star who has garnered interest from around Europe

American soccer is no stranger to teenage prodigies. Perhaps the most famous one the sport has ever seen, Freddy Adu, came from the U.S., rising to prominence at just 14 years old. In the years since, Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah all became stars in their teenage years before leading the charge to the 2022 World Cup.

All of those mentioned were very good players as teenagers, and were coveted by the biggest clubs in the world. They were never, though, touted as the best in the world within their age group. They were never called the can't-miss player of their birth year. They were never the very best in the world.

That's what Cavan Sullivan is being tipped as right now. The Philadelphia Union starlet is being hailed as "the best 14-year-old player in the world", and, this time around, it may not be an exaggeration. Sullivan is a legitimate superstar in the making, a player with all of the skill and ability to truly make it to the top levels of the sport.

That's why Manchester City have already pounced, moving quickly to sign Sullivan years before he can even hope of playing for them. It's also why plenty of other top European clubs tried before City even got their chance. Every elite team in the world has been watching a player that may prove to be the most coveted prospect the American game has ever seen.

But who is Sullivan and why have City made such a big move to sign him? GOAL takes a look…

  • Philadelphia Union

    Where it all began

Throughout the past decade or so, the Philadelphia Union have probably been the best club in MLS at producing talent. Brenden Aaronson, Paxten Aaronson, Auston Trusty, Mark McKenzie… the list goes on and on. There are several players waiting in the wings, too, destined for their own European moves.

Sullivan is one of those players, as is his older brother, Quinn. You see, the Sullivan family has no shortage of talent, with the two brothers representing two of the jewels of the Union Academy.

Sullivan's father, Brenden, played professionally in his day before becoming a coach. His mother played in college, too. Quinn Sullivan currently stars for the Union, having made 86 appearances over the last four years, while the family's two other brothers, twins Declan and Ronan, are also rising through the Philly soccer scene.

Cavan, though, is the player in the spotlight right now. The hype is growing after he was handed the label of the most talented 14-year-old on the planet.

  • The big break

Throw on any highlight compilation of the U.S. Under-15s national team and you'll spot Sullivan right away. It's almost impossible not to with his bleach-blonde hair. Once you get past that, though, you'll see the player rocking it can make magic with the ball at his feet.

Sullivan really rose to prominence during the Generation adidas Cup in 2023 where, as a 13-year-old, he looked dominant against some of the biggest clubs in the world at the U15 level. Despite being two years younger than most everyone on the field, Sullivan helped lead the charge in wins over Valencia, Arsenal and Real Madrid, putting himself onto the radar of every European club watching.

"Those that maybe haven’t learned yet, a young Cavan Sullivan has the talent and ability to become, I’ll just say a household name, and is doing really big things," Union head coach Jim Curtin said.

His exploits weren't limited just to club level, though. Sullivan also led the U.S. U15s to a trophy at the 2023 CONCACAF U-5 Championships, earning the Golden Ball for the best player at the tournament. That award came, once again, despite the fact that he was just 13 years old.

Big clubs started swirling, and the Union faced a fight to keep their homegrown star in-house.

    How it's going

For months, now, the Union have been trying to keep hold of Sullivan. A report from claimed the club had made him the “best homegrown offer ever extended”. However, it appears that the Union could lose out to the almighty City Football Group (CFG).

Widespread reports say that CFG is closing in on a deal to sign Sullivan, who would have an interesting roadmap going forward. Unable to move to Manchester City until he's 18, Sullivan would likely be placed with one of CFG's other clubs starting at age 16. The club most often linked is Lommel SK, who play in the second tier of Belgian football. Sullivan has a German passport through his mother, which allows him to join a club in the European Union at age 16, which means a big move across the Atlantic could come as soon as September 2025.

The deal is not yet official and the Union will still hold hope of keeping their brightest homegrown star. One pathway forward would be Sullivan staying on until he turns 18, which would allow the Union to collect some sort of compensation for the teenage star.

Regardless of what pathway he takes, Sullivan looks destined for the very, very top.

  • Biggest strengths

The first thing that sticks out about Sullivan is, obviously, his maturity. Both physically and mentally, it takes a lot of maturity to play up in the competitions that Sullivan has. It takes even more to thrive in such a way that the world's biggest clubs immediately take notice.

“He’s got his feet on the ground, all this extra hype about him," said Union II head coach Marlon LeBlanc. "It doesn’t go to his head and I think that’s the fantastic thing about him. It’s what also allows him to come into our environment and still be cool and be bold.”

Sullivan's maturity may be his biggest asset, but it's not necessarily what caught the eyes of those mega-clubs. His skills did, and he has plenty.

An attacking midfielder by trade, Sullivan's vision is already highly advanced for his age. He can make incredible passes that can change games, and he also can get goals for himself, too, with his strong left foot.

He had a pair of assists in the final of the CONCACAF U15 championship, a 4-2 win over Mexico. He'd already scored three goals of his own throughout the tournament, too, showing what kind of impact he can already make in an attack on the international level.

Mentally, though, Sullivan's got a bid of an edge to him, too. While facing off with Arsenal at the Generation adidas Cup, Sullivan inside the first minute. He promptly celebrated with a tea-drinking celebration against one of English soccer's top clubs. Sullivan was among the smallest players on the field that day, but he showed no fear, which is what makes him more than ready for whatever's in his path.

232*, a nap and 5/17 – all in a day's work for Kerr

Amelia Kerr hadn’t heard of Belinda Clark or the 229 not out the former Australia Women captain struck in 1997. Kerr, who was only born four years later, broke a 21-year-old record on Wednesday when she struck an unbeaten 232 against Ireland. It is the highest ever score in women’s ODIs and also made her the youngest double-centurion – male or female – across formats. But those are only two of several landmarks the legspin-bowling allrounder achieved on a day of astounding all-round returns. After all, when it was her turn to bowl, she picked up 5 for 17.”I hadn’t heard of Belinda Clark [before],” Kerr said. “It’s pretty surreal. I had no idea [of the record]. I think I heard them say stuff on the speaker but I didn’t hear them because everyone was clapping.”In her first game as an opener at the international level, Kerr batted the full 50 overs and bettered her previous highest score across formats at any level of 152, against Otago Under-21s. As far as maiden centuries in women’s ODIs go, her 232 not out is the highest now and it will take take some beating.”It was nice to get the opportunity to open and get some time out in the middle. I had to work hard at the start. But once I got going, I had a good partnership with Leigh [Kasperek], which allowed me to play how I wanted to play and try and hit boundaries because we weren’t losing wickets.”And how did the 17-year old fancy celebrating her amazing feat? “Bit of recovery and… watch some quality TV in Love Island! Recoupling tonight, so it’s going to be a good episode,” Kerr quipped.A student of Tawa College, Kerr reflected on her roots in Wellington’s northernmost suburb, where she played much of her age-group cricket before debuting for New Zealand in 2016.”232 is the Tawa home phone line. All my family is in Tawa. It’s a great place, great community, so I’m sure they’d be celebrating.”Amelia Kerr lofts one over covers•Getty Images

For Haidee Tiffen, the head coach, watching Kerr stitch together a record 295-run stand – the highest second-wicket partnership in women’s ODIs – with Kasperek was a journey down memory lane. Nine years ago in Sydney, Tiffen and current captain Suzie Bates had put together 262, then the highest partnership for any wicket for New Zealand women.”Suzie and I held that record and we’re happy to hand that to two young and incredible batters,” Tiffen said. “Records are there to be broken, and there’s been a fair few in this series and it’s just really exciting from the coach’s point of view – the way the team’s tracking and the way we can hit in the future.”Amelia is a pretty humble character. She had a wry smile on her. She’s chuffed inside absolutely. She wants to do well and contribute, but how the team celebrates her successes is what it’s about as well.”The way Kerr closed her innings out was especially thrilling. She smashed two fours and her second six – in an overall tally of 33 boundaries – off her last three balls to go past Clark’s 229 and brought all her team-mates up to their feet.”I was thinking, ‘Will she get the record?'” Tiffen said of the moment. “She needed a six [four] off the last ball, and trust me, she didn’t know about that, but we did. And for her to get back and hit that six down the ground and get the record is fantastic.”To put the cherry on top of one of the most dominating performances in cricket history, Kerr picked up her first five-wicket haul.”I didn’t think I was going to bowl today, I thought Suzie was going to let me rest in the field standing at slip all day,” Kerr said. “[Between innings], the physio asked me to lie down on the table, and I took a two-minute nap. Then I went out to field. I saw it was a good day, so I embraced it and it was good to be out there with the team. Got to have a bowl, it was nice, and the pitch was turning, which obviously helps me.”So at the end of it all, New Zealand wrapped up a resounding 3-0 whitewash over Ireland, scoring 400-plus in each game and winning all of them by 300 runs or more. With the experiment to promote both the bowling allrounders – Kerr and Kasperek – up the order working, the record returns on Wednesday are likely to strengthen the management’s long-term plans of giving Kerr a run at the top.”I’ve always known Amelia has huge potential with the bat and I genuinely think we have a top-class allrounder in the team, [there’s] no doubt about it,” Tiffen said. “She’ll be batting in the top order in the future for the White Ferns. The point of difference has been her spin bowling, but the fact that she’s actually gone out and worked really hard on her bowling, and I know she’s hungry for the batting, to perform with the bat, to contribute to the team. [She’s a] hugely talented player, and at 17, she’s got the world ahead of her.”[The record] is unbelievable but she’s got the skills; the 360 game – she’s capable of scoring big. A hundred – fantastic, but to go on a get 232, I’m not speechless but it’s just absolutely incredible from here.”

Dane Vilas' ruthless double century snuffs out Somerset

There was also a century for Keaton Jennings on a day of toil for Somerset, but some unexpected success with the ball from Tom Abell

Paul Edwards at Old Trafford06-May-20182:04

Yorkshire complete epic comeback

ScorecardSamuel Beckett might enjoy watching Dane Vilas bat. Just when you think he can’t go on, he goes on. Unlike the eponymous character in Beckett’s novel, however, one doubts Somerset’s cricketers consider Vilas . On the contrary, they probably had some pretty ripe names for him on the third evening of this game, albeit they may not be good out-loud words. One sees their point. When Lancashire were eventually bowled out, deep in the evening session of this hot day, they had taken an improbable lead of 63 runs. More to the point, 235 of their 492 first-innings runs had been mercilessly plundered by Vilas, a batsman who seems not to know fatigue and who regards a century as the end of his beginning, an opening gambit, an opportunity.Vilas is a serial converter. Having reached three figures on 17 occasions, he has now made nine scores in excess of 150 and four double centuries. More remarkably still, Vilas has never been dismissed between 100 and 120. His innings against Somerset illustrated his ruthlessness. Having put on a mere 201 for the third wicket with Keaton Jennings, Vilas remained at the crease while Lancashire’s total was nearly doubled, adding 102 for the sixth wicket with Jordan Clark and 49 for the tenth with Matt Parkinson. He had opened his account on Saturday with a couple of sixes off Jack Leach but hit only eight fours in reaching three figures. Then he tore the flagging Somerset attack apart in the hour before lunch, levying ten more fours in getting to 150. Before long we had almost forgotten that Jennings had made his first hundred in 43 first-class innings.Somerset thought they had chances late in the morning session when they removed Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Steven Croft cheaply. Then Vilas reasserted his mastery and, like an implacable bailiff, took everything away from them. He and Clark dominated the afternoon session so the sudden tumble of four wickets just before tea came as something of a surprise, not least because all of them were taken by the Somerset skipper Tom Abell, who nearly doubled his first-class tally in the space of 12 balls.Abell is a medium-pacer who runs up with the genial good-nature of a chap who doesn’t really go in for this bowling lark but is always happy to help the side out, doncha know. The reality is rather different. A tight off-stump line is kept and if you play down the wrong line, as Clark did, you lose your pole. Two overs later Abell took three wickets in five balls as Lancashire declined to 443 for 9. Joe Mennie was bowled, Tom Bailey was leg before and James Anderson was caught at the wicket first ball. Abell smiled at all and sundry, as if to say that a career-best 4 for 43 was absolutely tickety-boo but surely old Jack deserved some more wickets. One tended to agree. Leach may yet wake in the cold and lonely hours before dawn and imagine he is bowling to Vilas. A similar sensation may afflict Lewis Gregory who dropped Lancashire’s linchpin in the gully when the batsman was 171 and just settling into his day’s work. And even when he had reached 200 off 323 balls, Vilas was not done. There were two more sixes as he shepherded young Parkinson towards greater Lancastrian strength. A late tea came and a late tea went. Then Parkinson was brilliantly caught in the gully by Craig Overton off Paul van Meekeren to end the innings. As for the game, it will probably end in a draw. Somerset’s openers faced 18 overs in the late evening and negotiated them without mishap. Lancashire’s wicketkeeper was Dane Vilas. He watched every ball intently. It is his incurable habit.

Inaugural USA Cricket election slated for May 18

USA Cricket has announced the election timelines for the inaugural voting process being conducted by the new national governing body, filling the void left by the expelled USACA administration, with the main vote for the seven-member constituent board of directors taking place from May 18 to 28.

USA to host 2020 WT20 Americas Regional Qualifier

The ICC has announced that USA will be hosting the 2020 World T20 Americas Group A Regional Qualifier from September 16 to 23. Aside from USA, the other competing teams are Canada, Panama and Belize. The top two teams will join Bermuda and Cayman Islands in the Americas Regional Finals, with both teams having already advanced from the Americas Group B Regional Qualifier held in Argentina earlier this year.
Though no city has been selected yet to host for USA, only one ground is needed since two matches will be played per day. That means that single-turf-wicket venues such as Indianapolis, Houston, Fort Lauderdale and Raleigh, North Carolina are possible options, aside from the four-ground Woodley Park in Los Angeles.

New members of USA Cricket must register by April 24 to be eligible to vote in the elections. Once registration closes, members will have until May 8 to declare nominations for the positions of club director, league director, two elite player directors, and three individual director positions. All eligible candidates – cleared by the nominating and governance committee formed by USA Cricket last week – will be announced to voters on May 13, ahead of the opening of the voting polls five days later. Should there be any tie, a run-off election will be conducted from June 1 to 8, before winners are announced on June 11.Following the announcement of the election results for the seven-member constituent board, the nominating and governance committee will identify three independent directors to be installed, to complete the 10-member board prior to this year’s ICC annual conference. A preliminary list of all eligible voting clubs, leagues and other members is expected to be released by USA Cricket on April 27.At least two members on the new USA Cricket board will be female – one of the two elite player directors, and one of the three independent directors. It’s a noticeable change from the previous USACA administration, which had no female board members during its existence. Dr Vincent Adams, member of the ICC’s sustainable foundation advisory group, believes that the inclusion of women is a step that will make for a stronger and more united board of directors going forward.”We have worked incredibly hard to develop a constitution and a membership base that unites the wonderfully diverse cricket community in the USA,” Adams said in a USA Cricket press release. “Our hope and our expectation is that this diversity is reflected in the inaugural USA Cricket Board, and we are very excited to announce this process, which we are confident will attract the best possible candidates.”

"Wake up" – Mark Goldbridge tells Man United fans "I told you so"

Manchester United's decision to let goalkeeper David De Gea leave in the summer has been criticised by talkSPORT host Mark Goldbridge.

Why did David De Gea leave Man United?

De Gea left Man United as a free agent in the summer after 12 years with the club, having failed to agree a new contract, and he still remains without a club, despite being strongly linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

The Spaniard chose to leave the Red Devils after realising his role would have been greatly limited if he had committed to a new contract, having made too many mistakes last season, which ultimately meant Erik ten Hag brought in a new goalkeeper.

United completed the signing of Andre Onana for a fee of £47.2m near the end of July, joining from Inter Milan on a five-year deal, with Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol praising the Cameroonian's ability on the ball upon his arrival, saying:

"He's a bit of a contrast from David De Gea. Everyone talks about how you need a goalkeeper who's comfortable on the ball and can play out from the back in modern football, and Onana can certainly do that – he was exceptional for Inter, helping them get to the Champions League final."

However, despite the fact he is a fan of Onana, Goldbridge has now criticised the decision to let De Gea leave in the summer, telling talkSPORT: “I really do like Onana but it’s a mistake. It’s a mistake. I don’t like saying I told you so but so many people were clipping De Gea up last season, saying he’s a problem in the team. This, that, and the other.

“He’s not a problem in the team. Man United have conceded ten goals in five games. They’re averaging two goals per game, going in. He’s not a problem in the team. Last season he had 17 clean sheets. We only conceded nine goals at home last season. We’ve conceded, what, five already at home. That’s over half in two games.

“People need to wake up. We didn’t need to replace David De Gea. The defence worked. Yes, De Gea can’t play out from the back but did we need to replace the Golden Glove winner who was hardly conceding goals and the defence was solid?”

Should Man United have let David De Gea leave?

The former United goalkeeper was praised for some of his performances last season, with West Ham United reporter Roshane Thomas describing him as "unreal" back in October, but he was prone to a few mistakes.

Last season, the 32-year-old made two errors leading to goals in the Premier League, and the fact he struggles playing out from the back has long been criticised by the media, so it was probably the right decision to let him leave.

Ten Hag will now be hoping Onana is able to kick on after a somewhat difficult start to life at Man United, conceding ten goals in his opening five Premier League games, only seven fewer than De Gea shipped across the whole of the 2022-23 campaign.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper Could Now Sign £9m Machine To Unlock Danilo

Nottingham Forest have been linked to a Serie A midfielder according to recent reports, as Steve Cooper eyes further reinforcements in the middle of the park this summer.

The Welshman and his side are underway to a convincing start, claiming their first three points of the season at the City Ground during game week two, beating Sheffield United late on in a 2-1 thriller.

Despite recruiting strongly already in the transfer market through the arrivals of Ola Aina, Matt Turner, Anthony Elanga and the permanent deal of Chris Wood, the Reds are reported to be on the prowl for a new midfielder.

Who could Nottingham Forest sign this summer?

It’s clear to see just where Cooper envisions his next signing to play, with the club linked to a host of central midfield talent in recent weeks.

Reported interest in Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez, Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana and Benfica’s Florentino Luiz has circulated, however another name has emerged this week.

As reported by journalist Cesar Luis Merlo, Forest have approached to sign Bologna midfielder Nicolas Dominguez, who has a speculated price tag of €10m (£9m).

Merlo relayed that both the Reds and Galatasaray have “made offers to buy” the player, and are “bidding” to capture his signature this summer.

How good is Nicolas Dominguez?

Deployed in both central and deeper in defensive midfield, the 25-year-old has been lauded as being a presence that “loves a challenge” by South American football expert Nathan Joyes.

Such praise is supported by his monstrous average of 3.13 tackles per 90 over the past year, which has ranked him in the top 8% of midfielders in Europe’s top five leagues in that area, via FBref.

The Argentine won an average of 5.6 total duels per game last season in Serie A for Bologna, once more solidifying just how much of a protective cog he could be in Cooper’s engine room.

Nicolas-dominguez

One player in particular that could benefit from the Velez Sarsfield gem’s potential arrival is fellow midfielder Danilo, who has impressed greatly since arriving at the City Ground in January.

Taking to Twitter, one Forest fan commented on the Brazilian’s positioning deeper in the midfield as being a waste of his “amazing talent” in impacting a game further forward, which highlights just how much of a revelation Dominguez could be on the 22-year-old.

The Bologna machine could be the anchor in midfield, which would allow Cooper to hand Danilo a more advanced role, with the assurance that the Argentine could hold the fort in the pivot.

Averaging 6.15 progressive passes and 1.41 key passes per 90 for the Italian outfit last term via FBref, the 25-year-old could be the perfect link to unleashing Forest’s January arrival further up-field, with him having the passing ability to transition play.

Asserting himself as one of the better combative midfielders in Europe, Dominguez could be the ideal acquisition for the Tricky Trees to chase, with him being a more cost-effective and equally as impressive target to others the club are speculated to have eyed.

With Galatasaray also monitoring the Serie A sensation, Cooper must strike fast if he is to secure the impressive talent’s signature before the end of the window.

SA club cricketer slams record 490 in 50-over match

Shane Dadswell, an opening batsman for NWU Pukke Cricket Club, ran up 490 off 151 balls, with 57 sixes and 27 fours, to amass the highest individual score in a minor limited-overs match

Firdose Moonda22-Nov-2017A South African club cricketer has broken the record for the highest individual score in a minor limited-overs match when he smashed an astonishing 490 runs from 151 balls. Opening batsman Shane Dadswell, who plays for NWU Pukke Cricket Club, beat the previous record, held by Indian batsman S Sankruth Sriram, who made 486 for JSS International School in the 2014-15 season.Dadswell, who also celebrated his 20th birthday on the day of his record-breaking feat last Saturday, described it as “the best day of my life,” and admitted to having an “attacking nature,” after also scoring 126 off 38 balls the previous weekend. His 490 included 57 sixes and 27 fours.”Honestly, it’s not even something you dream about. You dream about a double hundred, so to get 400-odd is a really special moment on a special day. It’s phenomenal, the best day of my life,” Dadswell said. “It’s been an amazing two weeks. There’s certainly an attacking nature inside me.”Dadswell was the major contributor in his team’s total of 677 for 3 in 50 overs, also a record in minor cricket. The previous highest was 629 for 5 and belonged to University of Warwick 2nd XI, against Newman College in 2007. NWU Pukke had another centurion in their ranks, Ruan Haasbroek, who scored 104 not out. Potch Dorp’s bowlers were all severely punished, with Dawis Crowther conceding 131 runs in his 10 overs, although he did have a wicket as consolation. As if his batting effort was not enough, Dadswell also took 2 for 32 in seven overs, as Potch Dorp finished on 290 for 9 and lost by 387 runsA former pupil of King Edward VII School, the alma mater of Graeme Smith and Quinton de Kock, among others, Dadswell has played in all the Cricket South Africa age-group weeks and is currently in his second year as a Business Psychology student. He has yet to decide if he will pursue cricket professionally, but has been in talks with provincial side North West, one of two teams that feed into the Johannesburg-based Lions’ franchise.”It would be amazing to play cricket for a living. I guess the first steps have already been taken because it was in the pipeline for me to start training with the North West Dragons from this week,” he said. “So, that’s the direction I’m looking in for now. I have been part of a few things with them this season. I’ve played a warm-up game and stuff like that. I don’t really think I would have had an opportunity up until next year, but hopefully this innings will change that.”
