Leeds could land Piroe rival in swoop for 6 ft 2 whiz who’s an "absolute joke"

Leeds United bounced back to winning ways this week as they secured a vital 3-1 win at home to Swansea at Elland Road in the Championship.

The Whites were able to secure all three points against the Welsh outfit despite starting in the worst possible way as Jamie Patterson made it 1-0 after two minutes.

However, Joel Piroe – the player they signed from the Swans over the summer – was played in by Crysencio Summerville and produced a composed finish into the bottom corner.

Brilliant goals from Georgino Rutter – who beautifully controlled a long pass and slotted past the goalkeeper – and Dan James then rounded off the 3-1 win for Daniel Farke's side.

Leeds forward Georgino Rutter.

The result leaves the club in third place and seven points adrift of the automatic promotion places as the Yorkshire-based outfit chase an instant return to the Premier League.

They are in a strong position but do have the opportunity to bolster their chances by dipping into the market during the upcoming January transfer window.

Angus Kinnear revealed that Farke does have the funds and backing to strengthen his squad if the right player, or players, become available.

With this in mind, one player who could come in to improve the manager's options at the top end of the pitch is reported target Ali Al-Hamadi.

Leeds transfer news – Ali Al-Hamadi

It was reported by TEAMtalk last month tat the Whites are one of a host of clubs interested in a possible deal to sign the AFC Wimbledon star ahead of the second half of the season.

The outlet named Derby County, Blackburn Rovers, and Sunderland as the other sides who could be in the race to secure his signature in 2024.

This means that Leeds may face competition from League One and Championship outfits if they decide to firm up their interest with a formal approach for the Iraq international.

Barnsley and Peterborough had offers rejected for the talented centre-forward over the summer but TEAMtalk did not state how much it would take to acquire his services this time around.

It was also stated that Wimbledon do not want to lose their star striker and are bracing themselves for interest and bids from other teams for Al-Hamadi.

Leeds must now beat off competition from the aforementioned clubs and land a deal to sign the young marksman as he could be a shrewd addition to the squad.

It would be a gamble to take a player out of League Two and expect them to adapt to the Championship but he could come in as an understudy, initially, and then rival to Piroe's position in the team to create a healthy competition between the pair.

They could spur each other on and ensure that no one feels comfortable with their position in the team if they are not performing – in order to drive up and maintain high standards.

Piroe's season in numbers

The Dutch centre-forward was brought in from divisional rivals Swansea during the summer transfer window in a deal that was reported to be worth more than £10m.

He arrived with a proven track record of scoring goals in the Championship after two impressive seasons in front of goal with the Swans.

Piroe plundered 22 goals and six assists across 45 appearances during his debut campaign in English football before a return of 19 goals and two assists in 43 outings throughout the 2022/23 term.

Leeds forward Joel Piroe.

He has been able to carry that form over to Yorkshire so far with a record of seven goals and one assist in 15 league matches for the club – slightly better than one goal contribution every other game.

The left-footed finisher has created two 'big chances' for his teammates and only missed five 'big chances' of his own at the top end of the pitch.

Piroe is also the club's joint-top scorer in the Championship so far this season, with Summerville also on seven strikes, and has been a fantastic addition for Farke.

The 24-year-old has been deployed in a hybrid attacking role that has seen him for a fluid partnership with Georgino Rutter in the final third.

He starts in a number ten position but has the license to venture forward into a number nine role and beyond Rutter when the French magician drops back into midfield to make things happen in possession.

Al-Hamadi could now come in and rival Piroe for his position if Leeds are able to win the race for the impressive youngster's signature.

Ali Al-Hamadi's 2023 in numbers

Wimbledon snapped up the number nine from Wycombe Wanderers in January of this year and manager Johnnie Jackson lauded him as a "hungry" prospect who has the ability to offer a "threat" in behind.

The 21-year-old talent enjoyed a superb second half of the 2022/23 campaign after his move in January as he scored ten goals and provided one assist in 15 league starts.

He has followed that up with a fantastic start to the current season in League Two. The 6 foot 2 whiz has racked up eight goals and five assists in 16 starts for Wimbledon.

His sensational form this term has led to his manager – the aforementioned Jackson – going as far to say that the Iraq international can go "all the way" to the top of the game and that the gem is a "shining light" for his side.

Al-Hamadi's form has also earned plaudits from analysts as Tom Williams dubbed him an "absolute joke" who will be playing Championship football sooner rather than later.

This suggests that those who have watched him up close and personal this year believe that he has the quality and attributes to adjust to playing in the second tier.

The statistics behind his displays for Wimbledon this year also indicate that the potential is there for him to take a step up as he has dominated League Two with a consistent stream of goals and assists.

Al-Hamadi, who can play through the middle or out wide, has showcased his quality and potential over the course of 2023 and Leeds must now offer him a chance to prove himself at a higher level.

He could come in and provide Farke with a dream rival for Piroe's position as another versatile centre-forward who could chip in with goals and assists on a regular basis.

Ambidextrous bowler Mokit Hariharan catches the eye in TNPL

With Australia in the midst of world domination in the 2000s, then coach John Buchanan was still looking for ways to add an extra dimension – or an extra arm. “I am disappointed senior coaches are not spending time with fielders, batters and bowlers to develop new skills,” Buchanan had said. “Particularly throwing with both hands.”Since then, ambidextrous players – while still rare – have started slowly emerging. In the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) last week for example, VB Kanchi Veerans threw one, Mokit Hariharan, into the mix.In Sunday’s TNPL game against Dindigul Dragons, Mokit was introduced by his captain B Aparajith in the sixth over, where he bowled orthodox left-arm spin to the right-handed N Jagadeesan before switching to right-arm offspin for the left-handed C Hari Nishant.Although Mokit – a top-order batsman who also bowls occasionally – failed to get a wicket, his unique skill makes him an allrounder of a different kind, forcing opposition batsmen to worry about an extra thing. He finished with 0 for 32 off his four overs and had the second-best economy among the seven bowlers Kanchi Veerans used on Sunday.Mokit joins Akshay Karnewar, whose ambidextrous bowling for Vidarbha in India’s domestic T20 competition befuddled the opposition batsmen two seasons ago, and Yasir Jan, the fast bowler from Pakistan who bowls “around 145kmph with his right arm and no less than 135kmph with his left.”Being able to bowl with both arms has long been considered little more than a gimmick. One of the first times history has recorded an attempt was by Hanif Mohammad when he was bowling to Sir Garfield Sobers, on 364 at the time and needing one to set a world record for the highest individual Test score. Sobers duly pushed a single off the delivery.Apart from Karnewar and Yasir, Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis bowled with both arms in the 2018 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand, while Bangladesh women’s Shaila Sharmin has made this unique skill a potent weapon.

Rohit, Dhawan set it up for wristspinners in huge win

India set off a rollicking start to their tour with a crushing 76-run win against the hosts at Malahide

The Report by Varun Shetty27-Jun-20182:12

Chopra: Ireland’s bowling looked club-class

India’s opening batsmen, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, set off a rollicking start to their tour. Their 160-run stand, the second-highest for India in T20Is, provided momentum enough to last the rest of the game in a 76-run win at Malahide. In response to India’s 208 for 5, the hosts couldn’t even trump the pair’s effort, succumbing to India’s wristspinners through the middle overs. As is often the case when the two open together, it was Dhawan who first took on the bowling. Having been the benefactor of the first of at least six dropped chances across both innings, Dhawan was ruthless. Never was this more evident than in the sixth over when, after stepping out and copping a bouncer in the grille, Dhawan completed the over by stepping out again creaming a length ball out of the ground, straight over the bowler’s head.Rohit began edgily, before joining his partner in feasting on the length balls fed by the seamers, hardly any of which were faster than 130kph. Their preferred method was to loft over the infield, a tactic provided for nicely by a flat, insipid surface. Ireland used four seamers in the Powerplay with no success, before some respite through George Dockrell’s first over immediately after. But when Rohit skipped down the track to launch offspinner Simi Singh high over deep midwicket for his first six, there would be no further control. It wasn’t a complete batsman-dominated innings. There were chances. They found Stuart Thompson, in particular, many times. By the time he finally held onto one – his fourth chance – to get Dhawan, India had made 160 in 16 overs.Suresh Raina, who along with Manish Pandey, was a surprise pick ahead of Dinesh Karthik, was promoted to No. 3 and had a brisk five-ball innings for 10 before falling to the first short ball bowled at him. With Rohit approaching a third T20I hundred at one end, India went for complete aggression at the other with, first MS Dhoni and then Hardik Pandya being pushed above Virat Kohli. But Peter Chase bowled a freak final over, managing to get Rohit – for 97 – Dhoni and Kohli, in the space of four balls to put one final, extremely belated dent to the innings.Malahide’s 9400 spectators were witness to an immediate display of aggression from Paul Stirling, who stepped out and got squared by a Bhuvneshwar Kumar outswinger first ball. That single down to third man would be his only run. With his next display of aggression, he only managed to chip one to mid-on.India dropped James Shannon thrice within the first four overs, none of them patently tough ones. The reprieves allowed a struggling batsman to find his feet against a good nagging pace attack, before he started picking out the leg side at will with predominantly front-foot hoicks. Normally a middle-order batsman, pushed up on the day for the dropped William Poterfield, Shannon found his best in the middle overs.Three of his best shots came against Chahal, each one muscled to completion against balls that were turning away from him, landing either side and far behind deep midwicket. But when he attempted the same against Kuldeep, he was promptly caught in front with a front-of-the-palm yorker. With that, the wheels came off. Neither the in-form Simi at No. 4, nor the experienced Kevin O’Brien at No. 6 got into the chase and with their tame dismissals against Kuldeep and Chahal, respectively, any hopes of Ireland coming close were dashed. And with Wilson running past a Chahal legbreak immediately after O’Brien had fallen, Ireland were all but done at 96 for 6.Kuldeep capped off the embarrassment, lulling the lower order batsmen forward with dipping, fizzing deliveries which they scarcely had an idea about. In doing this he slipped in a maiden, before tonking the off stump of Stuart Poynter as he wicketkeeper looked to flick one from leg stump. That was his fourth wicket, and at 4 for 21, he had the best figures in his exciting young T20I career.

Criticism of Australia team culture out of proportion – Ponting

The former Australia captain, however, said he was shocked by the ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town, and that the penalties handed out by Cricket Australia were necessary

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Apr-2018The ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town is being seen as much more than just that. Australia’s team culture has come under the scanner, with suggestions that such a fall was inevitable in a win-at-all-costs side. Outgoing Australia coach Darren Lehmann even said New Zealand might be a good example to follow for on-field behaviour, and Cricket Australia ordered an independent review into the team culture. However, former Australia captain and a possible candidate for the role of coach, Ricky Ponting, believes the talk about the team culture is out of proportion.Ponting, currently in India as head coach of IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils, addressed the issue for the first time at a press conference on Thursday. Ponting expressed shock at the events in Cape Town, and said the reaction from Cricket Australia was befitting. However, he didn’t necessarily feel the team culture had deteriorated drastically.”The cultural issue for me is really an interesting thing because if we wind the clock back to just a couple of months, when Australia won the Ashes like they did, there was no talk about cultural problems or issues whatsoever,” Ponting said. “I honestly feel on this occasion the cultural stuff that’s been spoken about has probably been blown out of proportion to a certain degree.”Ponting, however, did not play down what a big disappointment the ball-tampering incident was for him and the rest of Australia. “As a past player and past captain, I was quite shocked to see what actually took place out on the field,” he said. “The pleasing thing for me is that now it seems the issue is starting to come to an end. We hear this morning that David Warner also accepted his sanction, means all three guys have accepted the sanctions before them.”Ponting said the country was jolted by what they saw. “Look, when I was back at home a week and half ago, if you think it was big news over here, it was astronomical how big the issue was in Australia, and rightly so,” he said. “As Australians, we like to play the game hard, we like to play the game fair. Our fans expect the Australian player to play that way. I think the reaction back in Australia was as big as it was because the Australian public felt the Australian players had not played the game in a fair way.”It seems it’s like coming to an end, it’s a good thing for the game’s sake, it’s a good thing for the player’s sake as well, that they can try and get away from it all now. As hard as that’s going to be for them, it’s also a good thing for cricket in Australia as well. Now that the Test series is over, the guys have got a few weeks to get away from it all and then start rebuilding what has sort of collapsed for them over the last couple of weeks.”When asked how he would have reacted to the incident if he had been in a position to act, Ponting said it would be unfair for him to say, but did acknowledge that Cricket Australia’s sanctions were pretty much necessary.”There’s a very big picture there for the world game’s sake, and Cricket Australia, I think, have reacted to what the world game pretty much demanded,” he said. “The world game and the Australian public demanded that these players were dealt with and treated in a certain way.”Now it would appear that 12-month bans would appear to be a very severe ban. If you go back to what the ICC sanction was: one-game ban for Smith and nothing for the other two. You can understand the gap is vast between what the ICC deemed fair [and what CA handed out]. I wouldn’t comment on what I would have done. It would be unfair.”

Arsenal: Arteta could finally fill Xhaka void by signing "outstanding" gem

Arsenal remain unbeaten in the Premier League so far in the 2023/24 campaign, as Mikel Arteta hopes to improve on his squad’s successes from last season.

The Gunners missed out on their first league title since 2004 by five points, after leading the table for the majority of the term, only to be beaten by treble winners Manchester City on the home straight.

Arteta’s squad struggled with issues of depth towards the end of last season, as injuries to key players left the favoured XI short on quality which subsequently tarnished the Gunners’ title charge.

It was integral for Arteta and Edu to fill in the gaps this summer and bolster the squad in the transfer window, which was achieved to some degree as four new faces arrived in north London, and over £200m was spent.

Gabriel Martinelli

While the new signings have settled well to the new surroundings, there remains a feeling that the squad remains in short areas, particularly in defensive roles as £38m summer arrival Jurrien Timber was ruled out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury on the opening day of the season.

Away from the defence but staying with defensive duties, Arsenal bid farewell to Granit Xhaka in the transfer window, leaving a slight gap in deep midfield despite the £105m acquisition of Declan Rice.

Rice has made a formidable start to life with the Gunners – having been dubbed "outstanding" by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher – yet as fellow midfielder Thomas Partey battles injury woes, the role that Xhaka once excelled in remains a void in the middle of the park.

There could be some encouraging movements for Arteta in the upcoming January transfer window, however, with the latest reports suggesting that one of Arsenal’s previous targets is once more being eyed at the Emirates.

Could Arsenal sign Douglas Luiz?

According to Fabrizio Romano, as relayed by Caught Offside, Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is a player that remains an admired player in north London with a move being monitored.

The renowned journalist named Wolverhampton Wanderers star Pedro Neto as a potential target, as well as name-dropping Luiz as being a player that has “always been appreciated” at the Emirates.

It’s common knowledge of just how highly Arsenal regard the Brazilian, as they failed to sign him last summer after having three bids rejected by the Villans, with the offers said at the time to be around £25m, via the Guardian.

The 2022 window wasn’t the last time that Luiz was mentioned with reference to Arteta’s side, with The Sun claiming this summer that the Gunners were ready to challenge rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the bid to secure his signature.

Nothing prevailed from the speculation, as the 25-year-old remains at Villa Park, with his consistent performance seeing him become one of Emery’s most treasured figures in his current squad.

How much is Douglas Luiz worth?

Signed by Villa from Man City in 2019, the £15m fee that the Midlands club paid to obtain the midfielder looks to be more and more of a bargain each time he steps onto the pitch.

Currently, the Brazilian has a transfer value of around €50m (£43.4m), as per CIES Football Observatory, a figure that if the Gunners were hoping to purchase the 25-year-old, would likely rise due his importance and current contract at Villa Park.

After penning a new deal last October, Luiz extended his stay at Villa Park to 2026, boosting his earnings from £30k-per-week to £75k-per-week to reinforce his importance to the club.

With three years remaining on his current deal, his price tag will almost certainly rise if Arsenal decide to once again come knocking for the midfielder, with it likely that the Gunners will have to pull a bid far more lavish than £25m to lure the whiz away.

Why is he worth that much?

Previously lauded as “outstanding” by Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor, Luiz has become one of Villa’s most integral players, leading by example in midfield.

Last season, the former Etihad outsider showcased just why he is so highly regarded in the Midlands, as he had a direct hand in 12 Premier League goals, as well as being a reliable figure to reduce threat in the engine room.

In 37 appearances, the Brazilian scored six goals and registered six assists, ending the campaign as Villa’s best performing player with an average Sofascore match rating of 7.10 in the Premier League.

Despite being deployed in a deep role in midfield, Luiz was one of Villa’s key creators last season, as supported by his average of 1.2 key passes per game while maintaining a pass completion rate of 86%, via Sofascore.

Consistency is the most admirable element to the 25-year-old’s game, with his performances last term suggesting that he is reaching his prime, as his form continues into the 2023/24 campaign.

In eight league appearances so far, Luiz has already scored three goals and has maintained an average match rating of 7.38, cementing his importance to the Midlands club who will be desperate to keep hold of his commanding presence amid speculation.

What could Douglas Luiz offer to Arsenal?

There are a host of elements that Luiz could offer Arsenal based off his skill set alone, however with reference to the lack of fulfilment of Xhaka’s advancing role from deep, the 25-year-old could be the ideal acquisition.

With Kai Havertz showing better form when sitting around the striker, and Partey being dealt consistent injury blows, Luiz could be the perfect addition to Arteta’s midfield plans.

Prior to last season, Xhaka was identifiable as a brute, a combative and ill-mannered midfielder with a hot head, however last term he blossomed into a glorious advancing presence.

The Swiss scored seven goals in the Premier League last season, playing a similar game to that of Luiz at Villa, in being both an attacking threat and an uncompromisable presence in the heart of midfield.

As highlighted in the table above, the two midfielders have similar strengths, adding to Luiz’s potential claim to fit into Arteta’s budding squad, with the numbers suggesting that he could quite easily fill the void left by Xhaka’s departure.

After signing Rice, the Spaniard bolstered the stability of his midfield, but again by losing Xhaka, the balance in transition became slightly disrupted, which is where links to the Brazilian could become encouraging.

There is no doubt that the 25-year-old has an obscene amount of quality that has passed the Premier League test with flying colours, however, whether Arsenal are serious once again to battle for his signature remains as speculation.

Talks opened: Another Newcastle star could sign new contract with Bruno

Bruno Guimaraes' potential new deal at Newcastle United is a key talking point currently, and now a separate update has emerged regarding another Magpies hero.

Will Bruno Guimaraes sign a new Newcastle deal?

Newcastle have made some superb signings in recent years, making the most of their newfound wealth and improving greatly as a team. A host of player have arrived at St James' Park and it has helped them return to the Champions League after a 20-year absence, by virtue of finishing fourth in the Premier League last season.

One of the biggest stars to have come in has been Bruno, who joined the Magpies in January 2022 and has made an enormous different in midfield, bringing both quality and winning mentality to that area of the pitch.

The Brazilian is reportedly close to signing a new contract with the Magpies, even though he still isn't out of contract until the summer of 2026, which would be massive news for the club, and arguably as important as any new signing that comes in.

While nailing Bruno down for many years to come is right at the top of Newcastle's list of priorities, sorting out the futures of other players is also important, and a key update has emerged regarding one of his teammates.

callum-wilson-newcastle-united-leicester-city-match-opinion-premier-league

Will Callum Willson extend his stay at Newcastle?

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson could also now sign an extension at St James', with talks opened on extending his current deal which expires next summer:

"Newcastle have opened contract talks with striker Callum Wilson over a new deal at St James’ Park, TEAMtalk understands. Wilson is in the final year of his current deal after joining Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020.

"The 31-year-old has been a roaring success for the Magpies since his arrival on Tyneside and played an instrumental role in their fourth place finish last season and subsequent qualification for the Champions League. Wilson – who has scored twice in Newcastle’s opening four games – scored 18 goals and provided five assists for the club last season."

Extending Wilson's stay makes perfect sense for Newcastle, but only if it is a relatively short-term contact, considering the fact that he is now 31 years of age and has had injury problems in the past. If he remained in a Magpies shirt until he was around 33 or 34, he could continue to be a good squad player, acting as a handy backup option to Alexander Isak.

The eight-cap and two-goal England international has been an impressive servant for Newcastle since arriving from Bournemouth back in 2020, scoring 40 goals in 86 matches, and there are few signs of him slowing up at the moment.

Granted, losing him next summer wouldn't necessarily be the end of the world, considering a strong replacement would likely come in – Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been linked with a move – but he knows the club well and still has enough in the tank to be a handful for Premier League defenders for some time, having been lauded as a "hugely important part of our team" by Magpies manager Eddie Howe.
