Tottenham: Fabrizio Romano Shares Definitive Tapsoba Update

Tottenham Hotspur and Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba is "definitely" one to watch this summer and he looks like their top defensive target, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Who will Tottenham sign?

Spurs and new manager Ange Postecoglou are thought to be targeting multiple senior centre-backs ahead of the 2023/2024 Premier League season.

The new campaign, and Postecoglou's debut one at that, kicks off in around a fortnight but the north Londoners are still yet to confirm the arguably crucial addition of a capable new defender.

Spurs held one of the worst defensive records of any elite side in the top flight last season, conceding a pretty woeful 63 league goals, with no side above 15th in the table leaking more.

It is a glaring issue that Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy must address quickly, especially if they are to mix it with some of the division's top sides.

The Lilywhites head coach, speaking to media recently, has also admitted that his side are actively looking at signing a new defender or two this summer.

"That's definitely our intention, absolutely," said Postecoglou.

"We've been working on it for a while and we'll definitely try to get it done as quickly as possible.

"I don't think it's any secret about some of the areas we needed to strengthen. Some of it I identified early on. The goalkeeper was one and central defence is another.

"In terms of the other boys, we've got a big squad but my view is I wanted to bring them along and just work with them, get some clarity in my head and give clarity to them."

Tapsoba, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tottenham in recent weeks, is believed to be one of the centre-back candidates – joined by Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo, Barcelona's Clement Lenglet, Juventus star Gleison Bremer and Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven – who have all been mentioned at points by the media.

Renowned transfer journalist Romano, speaking to CaughtOffside this week, shared an update on Tottenham's pursuit of Tapsoba in particular.

He says that it is "definitely" one to watch and the Burkina Faso international could well be Spurs' top transfer target in the centre-back position.

"Tottenham are still working on this one, he remains a top target for Spurs in defence," said Romano.

"Still, it’s not an easy deal to get done because Bayer Leverkusen are asking for a big fee but Spurs are still trying to find a way.

“As previously mentioned, Tottenham have also had an interest in Wolfsburg centre-back Micky van de Ven, as they have a strategy of negotiating with a few different players before attacking the target they really want. It seems that Tapsoba is that player but the issue is he’s more expensive than Van de Ven.

"Also with Tapsoba, let’s see if other clubs could join the race for him too – it’ll be one to watch, definitely.”

How good is Edmond Tapsoba?

The 24-year-old played more Bundesliga minutes than any other Leverkusen outfielder last campaign, highlighting his real importance for manager Xabi Alonso.

Tapsoba ranked just behind teammate Jonathan Tah for clearances made per 90 also, making him an enticing option for Spurs and Postecoglou (WhoScored).

Indeed, the Bundesliga website even likened him to former Bayern Munich star Jerome Boateng for his composure in possession and pint-point long range passing.

Derby: Rams Set To Wrap Up Charlie Lindsay Transfer

Derby County are set to complete another piece of transfer business soon, with The Derby Telegraph reporting that a deal is nearly sorted to snap up Charlie Lindsay on a free transfer.

Who is Charlie Lindsay?

The 19-year-old is currently without a club, having been let go by his previous club Rangers. The youngster never made his debut for the Scottish Premiership outfit and instead spent the entirety of his time with the team playing for their B-Squad in the Lowland League and in various cup competitions. He initially caught the eye with Glentoran's Under-17 squad, which prompted the Gers to bring him to their own youth setup. Initially getting minutes for their Under-18 outfit, he then moved up to Rangers B, but has been let go after just two seasons with them.

During his stint playing for the Gers, he did manage to impress in reserve team action. The attacking midfielder played in the Trust Trophy and UEFA Youth League for the Scottish outfit without ever really making an impact – he played 13 times and scored twice – but it was his 2022/23 season in the Lowland League that stands out. Becoming a regular there, he played 33 times and rewarded the Gers B team with 12 goals and six assists along the way. Despite that impressive record though, the midfielder was released at the end of the campaign.

Are Derby County signing Charlie Lindsay?

On a hunt for a new club, it now looks as if he may have found one. According to a report from The Derby Telegraph, Derby are ready to snap him up on a permanent transfer having tried him on a trial basis. He'd been tracked by several other EFL outfits too, with Hull, Blackburn and Huddersfield all monitoring his situation, but it looks as if he will now head to Pride Park.

The League One outfit must have liked what they saw from the 19-year-old and having now impressed during his spell there, he has earnt a place in the Rams' academy.

Lindsay, who appears to be one for the future, offers Derby some versatility should they need to call upon him. He can play as both a central midfielder but also further forward in an attacking midfield role too. He seems to excel in both positions, with the youngster managing more assists when further back but more goals when he is given the chance to roam forward. If needed, he has also been utilised on either wing in the past too.

The 19-year-old talent also has some experience at international level, albeit not a first-team cap. He has played four times for the Northern Ireland Under-16 squad and bagged two goals in four games for them. Despite a solid record with that youth outfit, he has since gone unpicked though for Under-17, 18 and 19 teams. Some more coaching and reserve gametime with Derby though could lead to more caps – and could perhaps lead in the future to some first-team football for the Rams and his country.

Tom Westley hit a century as Essex moved to within touching distance of a home semi-final with a 72-run Royal London One-Day Cup win over previous South Group leaders Somerset at Taunton.A crowd of around 4,000 saw the visitors run up 334 for 6 from their 50 overs, Westley making exactly 100, Ravi Bopara 92 not out and Alastair Cook 65. Craig Overton and Roelof van der Merwe claimed two wickets each.Somerset were given a lightning start in reply by Johann Myburgh (57). But despite a solid 77 from skipper Jim Allenby, they lost wickets regularly as Neil Wagner took 3 for 55 and Simon Harmer 3 for 56.The result gave Essex a two-point lead over Somerset going into the final round of group games, so avoiding defeat in their final match against Kent at Canterbury would put them in the last four. Somerset may have to be content with a play-off spot. After the early loss of Varun Chopra, Westley and Cook laid the foundation for a competitive Essex total with a second-wicket stand of 135 in 20 overs.Cook reached an untroubled 54-ball half-century, featuring six boundaries, shortly after his partner had reached the same landmark off 42 deliveries, with 9 fours. It was a surprise when the former England captain, who had looked in total command, departed with the total on 156, caught behind flashing at a short ball from Jamie Overton.Westley was in full flow by then, moving fluently to three figures off 95 balls. Without addition he was bowled by left-arm spinner van der Merwe going down on one knee to swing to leg. There was a second wicket for van der Merwe when Ryan ten Doeschate was bowled by a delivery that skidded through. At 215 for 4, Essex were in danger of falling short of 300.That changed when Bopara and Ashar Zaidi added 88 in less than ten overs before the latter was well caught by Adam Hose at deep mid-wicket for a brisk 32.Bopara went to his fifty with a straight six off Tim Groenewald, having faced 56 balls, and completed a valuable contribution with another maximum off the final ball of the innings from Craig Overton following a short rain break.Somerset’s reply began in sensational style as Myburgh, who survived the simplest of chances to Paul Walter at mid-on off the fifth ball of the innings, bowled by Matt Quinn, went on the charge. The South African was on 48 by time the total reached 50 after just 4.4 overs and completed a thrilling 28-ball half-century, with 6 fours and 4 sixes, before holing out to Chopra on the mid-wicket boundary off Quinn.Peter Trego, Steve Davies and James Hildreth fell cheaply as Essex began to peg the run-rate back. At the halfway stage of their innings Somerset were 158 for 4, with Allenby well set.The captain took few risks moving to a 56-ball half-century and was looking on course for his first Somerset hundred at Taunton when he drove loosely at Neil Wagner and directed a simple catch to cover.Adam Hose, looking to build on his maiden century in the previous game against Gloucestershire, looked good again before being bowled for 28 by an off-break from Simon Harmer, who sent back Jamie Overton in the same over, attempting a second six over mid-wicket.With the required run-rate rising fast, van der Merwe and Groenewald perished to attacking blows. Some lusty hits from Craig Overton kept Somerset hopes alive before he was run out to finish the game.

Chelsea Schedule New "Talks" To Sign £21m "Sensation"

Chelsea are set to hold a fresh round of discussions regarding a deal to sign Flamengo star Matheus Franca, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Following Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival, the boss has wasted no time in starting to create his new-look squad by having a mass clearout which has seen the confirmed departures of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson have come in as senior recruits in the opposite direction, as per Transfermarkt.

Franca, who is primarily an attacking midfielder, has worked his way up through the ranks at the Maracana Stadium to become a regular feature of Jorge Sampaoli’s first-team, having made 53 senior appearances since entering the fold back in January 2022.

The Brazilian’s impressive performances in his homeland appear to have caught the eye of the Blues hierarchy after The Daily Mail reported that they are exploring a deal for the 19-year-old, who has also previously attracted interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the teenager is “keen on the move” to Stamford Bridge, and having been made aware of this, negotiations are expected to take place in the coming days to try and reach an agreement for his transfer.

Are Chelsea signing Franca?

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that Chelsea and Flamengo have organised discussions to see if they can find a middle ground on a switch for Franca. He wrote:

“Chelsea have scheduled new round of talks for Franca with Flamengo. Matheus, being negotiated for €20m fee while Flamengo want at least €25m (£21m). #CFC. Can confirm again Angelo Gabriel plan to fly to London this week then sign 6 year deal at Chelsea. €15m fee to Santos.”

Flamengo midfielder Matheus Franca.

Would Franca be a good signing?

Chelsea will recognise that Franca being just 19 years of age means he’d be a signing more so for the long-term future of the club, but he also looks more than ready to be involved with the first-team, so should he put pen to paper he would be a wonderfully exciting acquisition for Pochettino.

The Rio De Janeiro native, who’s sponsored by Nike, has posted 14 goal contributions (11 goals and three assists) in 58 appearances throughout his career so far and is a constant threat in the final third, ranking in the 97th percentile for most shots by players in his position and the 96th percentile for number of attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area.

Flamengo’s “sensation”, as lauded by journalist Aaron Stokes, also has the ability to play in six various positions across the pitch, including everywhere across the frontline alongside his usual role in the centre of the park, so he would provide the boss with plenty of versatility.

Finally, Franca may only be a teenager but he’s already got a taste of success with two senior trophies to his name and there’s no doubt that he’s hungry for more, which is a goal that he could achieve should he decide to link up with the squad in SW6.

Liverpool To Hold Meeting Over £100m-Rated Attacker

Liverpool may have a new striker in mind this summer, with journalist Sacha Tavolieri reporting that the Reds are set to have a meeting with Victor Osimhen's representatives next week.

How many goals did Victor Osimhen score last season?

The current Napoli striker has been in scintillating form over the course of the last campaign, helping fire his side to Serie A glory. It was the first title that the player has won since his move to Italy and he had a large part to play in that victory too.

With just 30 starts to his name in the league, the attacker managed to hit the back of the net a whopping 26 times, with four assists along the way to boot. It means that Osimhen averaged 1.05 goals or assists per 90 – meaning that every time he played a game, he was guaranteed to do one or the other.

When you compare him to others in his position amongst the Men's 'Top Five' big leagues in Europe too, he stands out as arguably one of the most clinical finishers around right now. His 0.87 non-penalty goal rate, for example, puts him in the top one percent in that category, whilst his overall non-penalty xG and xAG rate of 0.80 puts him in the top six percent in that category too.

It means that he possesses one of the best abilities to hit the back of the net in Europe and is also one of the best options for setting up teammates too, and he could soon be on his way to Anfield.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Are Liverpool interested in Victor Osimhen?

It's no wonder then, that there has been interest in his services. A recent report suggests that Premier League side Chelsea were still considering a deal for the player but that they may have to stump up £100m or more to do business for the player.

Now, according to an update from Tavolieri, there are actually three teams booked in to speak to Osimhen's entourage next week and one of the newest emerging teams who have planned talks is Liverpool.

It states that the Reds, and by extension new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, are set to speak about the player next week and that the "intentions" of the side will be "defined." Chelsea and Man United are also holding meetings about the striker.

The player has had an excellent 2022/23 season, when you consider both his stats and the way that he has impressed onlookers. Football journalist Josh Bunting for example has called Osimhen "lethal" based on his performances and goalscoring this season and it shows how prolific the attacker has been in front of goal.

If Liverpool do indeed have plans to bring in fresh forward options, then they could do a lot worse than the Napoli player.

Breakthrough In Negotiations WIth "Important" Arsenal 23-y/o

Arsenal are confident that Reiss Nelson will sign a long-term contract to stay at the club very soon, journalist Charles Watts has revealed.

What's the latest on Nelson and Arsenal?

The 23-year-old has struggled to break into the Arsenal first team this season as a result of injuries and the form of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, but has delivered when called upon as a substitute.

His cameo against Bournemouth saw him provide an assist for the equaliser and score a stunning winner as Arsenal completed a dramatic comeback, and some impressive substitute appearances followed as he finished the season with six goals and assists in 18 games across all competitions.

Nelson's contract expires this summer, and it appeared that he was going to depart the club, but he now looks set to stay following a breakthrough in talks.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts revealed that there is now confidence within the club that the winger is going to commit his future to Mikel Arteta's side.

"All signs are that this is going to be a done deal with Reiss Nelson and his contract, after rejecting a few previous offers," he stated.

"A breakthrough in talks has happened and people that I'm speaking to at Arsenal think this is going to happen. Until it's signed, until it's done, you never know something can change and other clubs can come in and wave a big contract offer under his nose and he could decide to go elsewhere.

"But at the moment there is a lot of positivity that Reiss Nelson will sign his new contract, we're just waiting for it to be done and announced."

What are Arsenal's aims for Nelson?

Given that Saka played in every league game last season, Nelson can be used more as rotational cover for the England international as Arsenal return to the Champions League.

Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson

Losing Nelson for free would have made a replacement necessary, and keeping Nelson, even with a wage rise, would likely be better value than spending a large fee on another winger, when Saka and Martinelli are the undisputed first choice options.

Arteta recently described Nelson as "important," and it is hard to imagine a scenario where Nelson will have committed his future to the club without assurances over his game time.

The winger was once regarded as one of the best talents in the academy, and after a difficult few seasons and a number of loan spells away, it now seems that he is in prime position to fulfil his potential at the club.

Scotland captain Mommsen retires aged 29

Preston Mommsen, Scotland’s captain and one of their leading batsmen, has announced his retirement from international cricket to pursue a career outside of the game

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-20160:53

Quick Facts: Preston Mommsen

Preston Mommsen, Scotland’s captain and one of their leading batsmen, has announced his retirement from international cricket to pursue a career outside of the game. Mommsen, who has been a vocal advocate of Associate nations being given greater support, said he had received “a very exciting and attractive opportunity in the corporate world”.Mommsen, 29, took on the captaincy in 2014 and led Scotland at the World Cup a year later. At the 2016 World T20, he oversaw Scotland’s first victory at a global ICC event, at the 21st attempt. His finest hour as a Scotland player came at the 2014 World Cup Qualifier, when he scored 520 runs at 86.66 on the way to being named Man of the Tournament. Having replaced the injured Kyle Coetzer as captain after the first two matches, he went on to lead Scotland to victory in the final, making 139 not out against UAE – his highest ODI score.Mommsen remained a key member of Scotland’s batting line-up and his retirement will leave them with a significant hole to fill in the middle order. In August, he scored 111 not out and 80 not out as Scotland beat UAE 2-0 in their WCL Championship fixtures, leaving them well placed to reach the 2018 World Cup Qualifier.During the first match against UAE, he passed 1000 ODI runs for Scotland and talked about becoming the first to reach 2000. However, he has now decided to step away from the game and take up a career in property investment.”After much thought and reflection, I have taken the decision to step down as the captain of Scotland and not renew my contract with Cricket Scotland, in order to pursue a very exciting and attractive opportunity in the corporate world,” Mommsen said. “It has been an incredibly difficult decision but one that I felt I had to make at this stage in my life.”I would like to thank everyone involved at Cricket Scotland, both past and present, for giving me the opportunity to fulfil my dreams and supporting me on my journey. I am enormously proud of what we have achieved over the last few years, and I have no doubt that the team and the organisation will continue to grow its presence on the global stage in the future.”I leave the team in a very healthy position with a world-class management setup and a group of players that are demonstrating the skill and hunger to push Scotland cricket into the top 12 in the world. I would like to wish both the team and the organisation all the very best.”Mommsen’s decision to step away from cricket is likely to have been influenced by scant opportunity to perform at the highest level. With the 2019 World Cup reduced to ten teams – and the top eight qualifying automatically – Scotland face a stiff task to reach the tournament in England. The 2018 qualifier would likely pit them against Afghanistan, Ireland, Zimbabwe and either Pakistan or West Indies for one of two spots.Scotland also took part in the last World T20 – although Mommsen was critical of the format, where the first round saw eight teams, including six Associates, compete to make it through to the Super 10s – but the next one is scheduled for 2020, with a proposed 2018 event still uncertain. At the 2015 World Cup, Mommsen was among several players from Associate nations to call on the ICC to help create a more level playing field, with increased fixtures against Full Members. He retires having played 146 times for Scotland, averaging 32.38 with the bat in ODIs and 34.91 in T20 internationals. Born in South Africa, where he played for the Under-19s, Mommsen moved to Edinburgh in 2006 and was first capped in 2010 after completing the qualification period.Scotland’s head coach, Grant Bradburn, said: “This is a bittersweet situation for our team and for Cricket Scotland. Above all we are very happy for Preston to be offered such an exciting opportunity. Preston is intelligent, well respected and ambitious, so for him to be moving into a corporate field that he is passionate about is just brilliant.”Preston Mommsen offers the team many qualities that will be difficult to replace, he will be a big loss. A quality experienced batsmen at the peak of his skills, consistently our fittest player, top fielder and of course our leader with a tough uncompromising attitude. Preston has proudly been a champion for the Associate game and a role model who has helped bring next tier nations to global attention, always striving to give Associate cricket the growing credit it deserves.”Preston should be very proud of his many achievements as an international player and we wish him every success in his new career.”
