Jos Buttler hails 'new beginning' to restore England's tarnished white-ball image

Captain takes ‘personal responsibility’ for World Cup debacle but won’t let experience define him

Cameron Ponsonby01-Dec-2023Jos Buttler has stated his desire to take England white-ball cricket back to its previous heights, saying that he feels personal responsibility for “shaping the next period” of the format’s evolution.Speaking after England trained for the second consecutive day at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, Buttler reflected on what has been a difficult two months, before throwing forward and highlighting the talent and excitement at the start of a “new beginning”.”There’s some really exciting talent in this team,” Butter said. “Young guys eager to get their opportunities and perform. There’s some guys that have not been exposed to ODI cricket a lot, but have a lot of experience in Test cricket, so not necessarily new to the international game. It’s a nice blend.”One player who particularly impressed at training was fast bowler John Turner, who bowled a barrage of bouncers at both Buttler and Harry Brook in a gut-busting spell of high-quality fast bowling. Turner doesn’t currently appear in the running for a starting spot in the first ODI, but Buttler said he was more than happy to have faced half an hour of bouncers from England’s new quick on the block.”It was good. It’s what I want him to do,” Buttler said of the battle between the two. “There are some exciting seam bowlers, guys with good pace, some good athletes and it’s a nice time to look forward to, give guys an opportunity and see what they have got.”Another of those seamers is Reece Topley, who joined up with the group to continue his recovery from the broken finger he sustained in the World Cup and to prepare for the T20I series next week. There is no suggestion that Topley will be made available for the ODI series.Buttler also confirmed that Phil Salt and Will Jacks will open the batting on Sunday, but kept his cards close to his chest in regards to the balance of the bowling attack that will line up on what has appeared to be a wicket that could spin prodigiously. England coach and former Test offspinner Richard Dawson bowled throughout the session, at one stage getting the ball to rag back through Brook’s gate and clean-bowl the IPL millionaire.”We’re gaining a lot of information from the couple of training days here,” Buttler said, though he went no further as to whether England will opt to field both specialist spinners in Rehan Ahmed and Tom Hartley. In referring to this tour as “certainly a bit of a new beginning”, Buttler was more holistic about the context of the series than his teammate Ben Duckett had been when speaking a day earlier, with Duckett instead preferring to consider the series in little more than the here-and-now.Buttler’s macro-approach can be attributed to a player who has been there, seen it and done it. An international debut that came when David Cameron had only just ticked off a year in No.10 Downing Street, you can forgive Buttler for speaking in the knowing tones of someone who just knows more about this subject than you do.”We have had one bad tournament,” Buttler said on the position of English white-ball cricket, as well as what is left to motivate a man with over 300 international appearances and two World Cup titles to his name.Related

“It’s been in a great place for a long time and you see the depth of talent of guys coming through and you want to help shape that period of white-ball cricket. That’s something I feel responsibility and motivation for….to get England white-ball cricket back to where it’s been for a long time.”In regards to his own learnings, Buttler emphasised the need to find balance in his own preparations that centre mainly around remembering to focus on himself as much as the team: “That’s a big learning for me, managing my own game is vital to the team and just finding different ways to do that to allow me to walk to the middle with a clear mind.”[And] realising that sort of tournament doesn’t define you. I’ve got to use it as motivation and hunger to push myself and the team forward and take the learnings from that. Use it as a positive experience to go into the rest of my career….I always think of Ben Stokes’ words to Jofra [Archer] about the [2019] Super Over. ‘Whatever happens here doesn’t define you,’ and I certainly feel like that World Cup isn’t the defining moment for me.”I’m at the stage of my life and career where I have got good perspective. I get home and have got two children who don’t really care about the World Cup. It certainly gives you a nice focus as a dad and those things, but I’m a very proud guy as well and have disappointments. But you know, life moves on, the world moves on pretty fast. There’s always something to look forward to. It’s never as bad as you think it is and it’s never as good as you think it is.”

The games will be played at the Zhejiang University of Technology’s (ZJUT) Pingfeng campus cricket ground.Laxman, who is the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, has previously too stepped in as head coach on men’s tours when Rahul Dravid has been rested – as was the case recently for the T20I series in Ireland. Kanitkar oversaw the women’s team for the home T20I series against Australia in December last year and then the tri-series in South Africa followed by the T20 World Cup earlier this year. The women’s team has been without a permanent head coach since December last year, when Romesh Powar was moved to the NCA. Former India bowler Nooshin Al Khadeer was appointed interim head coach for the women’s team’s last assignment – a white-ball tour of Bangladesh. The BCCI’s cricket advisory committee had conducted interviews for the women’s head coach position with three shortlisted names, but there has been no update on any appointment. In the men’s squad, there are doubts about Tilak Varma’s availability, as he could be asked to stay on in India on standby for the World Cup, given Shreyas Iyer had suffered back spasms just before the Super Four clash against Pakistan in the Asia Cup on Sunday. The women’s team will be led by Smriti Mandhana to start with. If India do make it to the semi-finals, Harmanpreet Kaur, who had been handed a two-match international ban for disciplinary issues, will return to lead in the final or the third-place playoff.

– Rafael é importante para o time. A imagem do Rafael é boa para a gente.

Eu falei “Calma, filho, vai jogar primeiro” (risos) – completou.

Cricket Scotland has announced the appointment of Pete Fitzboyden as interim chief executive. Fitzboyden joins on a six-month contract and replaces Gordon Arthur with immediate effect, after Arthur announced his intention to step down earlier this year.Fitzboyden is a former chief executive of London Sport, and has served in similar interim roles at Badminton England and Cycling UK. His most recent role was as a consultant working on governance standards for the Rugby Football Union. His arrival comes at a time of upheaval at Cricket Scotland, which was last year placed into special measures after a damning report into racism. The board is currently without a chair, following Anjan Luthra’s resignation after just six months in the role, and there has been criticism on both sides over plans to increase diversity in the Scottish game.”I am delighted to be joining Cricket Scotland during this important time for the sport,” Fitzboyden said.”There remains a great deal of work to be done to build on the progress to date and deliver on our commitments to anti-racism and EDI within the sport, whilst continuing to rebuild trust within the Scottish cricketing community. I am also keen to support the ongoing enhancement of Cricket Scotland as an organisation, to ensure it flourishes for years to come.”We are about to begin an exciting domestic cricket season, while our men’s and women’s national squads have crucial World Cup qualifying campaigns on the horizon. It promises to be an extremely busy summer, and I am really looking forward to getting out and about around the country to meet people from all communities who share my love of cricket.”Cricket Scotland has also brought in Kash Taank as its head of EDI, and Declan Ritchie as conduct in sport manager. The governing body said it is close to appointing a head of “Changing the Boundaries”, in a specialised role named after the racism report published in 2022.The process of hiring a permanent chief executive will begin during the summer, with a view to filling the role by December 1, 2023.

-Temos o foco agora no Brasileiro.

Chelsea join huge race to sign £15,000-p/w youngster after sending scouts

Joining a busy race ahead of the summer transfer window, Chelsea have now reportedly set their sights on signing a Champions League gem for Enzo Maresca after already sending their scouts his way.

Chelsea transfer news

The Blues rarely find themselves out of the transfer headlines and this summer is likely to be no different. Even after splashing the cash last season, those at Stamford Bridge are still on course to miss out on Champions League qualification and could turn towards further reinforcements as a result.

Among those already reportedly on their radar is Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens. The former Manchester City gem has been on the rise ever since leaving the Etihad and could now follow in Jadon Sancho’s footsteps by returning to the Premier League. Of course, the irony is that the Dortmund star would likely replace Sancho in Enzo Maresca’s strongest Chelsea side.

It’s not just attacking reinforcements who have seemingly caught the attention of the West London club, however. According to The Boot Room, Chelsea have now joined the race to sign Lamine Camara from AS Monaco this summer in what is set to be a hectic pursuit for his signature.

As the summer approaches, Chelsea are reportedly joined by Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Liverpool – among others – in the race to sign the young central midfielder.

BlueCo ready to finalise Chelsea deal to sign new £12m South American gem

He’s one for the future…

Having sent their scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for themselves, Chelsea could flex their financial muscles once again when the summer transfer window swings open to welcome a rising star who already has 23 caps for Senegal.

"Excellent" Camara could complete Chelsea's midfield

With Enzo Fernandez dipping in and out of form and Romeo Lavia struggling for fitness once again this season, the one constant in Chelsea’s midfield has been Moises Caicedo, who has been better than ever. But he can’t be asked to perform the job of three players on a consistent basis and the arrival of Camara would put an end to that at Stamford Bridge.

Playing 10 games less, the £15,000-a-week star has managed to keep up with Caicedo in most departments and has particularly excelled in possession, completing over 100 progressive passes.

Praised for his “excellent” ability to switch play by analyst Ben Mattinson, it should come as little shock that Europe’s best clubs are forming a queue to secure the Monaco star’s signature this summer.

Lamine Camara for Aston Villa.

Just who emerges to lead that line remains to be seen, but if Champions League football does prove to be a factor then Chelsea could face an uphill battle. With just 11 Premier League games remaining, the Blues have got plenty of work to do in the race to finish inside the top four.

Fabrizio Romano – Burnley now make "offer" to sign 26 y/o Championship star

Burnley have now made an “offer” to a Championship star and have already received a reply, as per Fabrizio Romano.

Burnley thrash Plymouth and prepare for Leeds

Scott Parker’s side were ruthless in the week, putting five past struggling Plymouth Argyle in the first half. Braces from Zian Flemming and Josh Laurent alongside a goal from Josh Cullen ensured that the Clarets head into Monday’s crucial encounter with Leeds United just three points behind the Whites.

Talking after the win in Devon, Parker was full of praise for his side, saying: “I thought we were superb tonight. We came here with a real clear idea and a game plan. We set that up as coaches, it’s down to players to then execute and the players were absolutely first class.

“We needed to come here with a mentality and mindset about us, this is a tough place to come, I know people look at league tables and may see a very different story.

“But a new manager in, an aggressive team, I played against this coach once in Belgium and had some struggles in a sense of how he sets up teams, so I knew the challenge here. We were just ruthless tonight. I thought we had everything about us.”

It has also been a productive month away from the pitch in the transfer market, with Burnley signing Ashley Barnes and Jonjo Shelvey in free transfers, while also landing Oliver Sonne.

More could be on the way before the February 3 deadline, though, with a bid for Plymouth star Morgan Whittaker being tabled earlier this month. Another Championship attacking star is also of interest to those at Turf Moor in West Brom’s Grady Diangana.

Burnley make Diangana “offer” – Romano

According to transfer expert Romano, Burnley have made an “offer” to sign Diangana, who is out of contract at The Hawthorns in the summer.

However, the Baggies star has “turned down” Burnley’s proposal, with Italian outfit Parma and Spanish club Celta Vigo also keen on Diangana’s services.

Called “exceptional” by journalist Jonny Drury in 2023, Diangana has been a West Brom player since 2020 after making his loan move from West Ham permanent.

Capable of playing on either wing or as an attacking midfielder, the 26-year-old is approaching 200 appearances as a Baggies player, however, his days in the Midlands could be numbered going off the recent update.

His next move may not be to Burnley, though, after turning down an offer from the Clarets, so it’ll be interesting to see who those at Turf Moor turn to next as they eye an attacking reinforcement.
