Liam Dawson moved to 45 LV= Insurance County Championship wickets with his fourth five-wicket haul of the season to delay Surrey’s title confirmation.Left-arm spinner Dawson has had his best batting season since 2015 and best-ever bowling campaign as his 5 for 44 kept Surrey waiting in their quest to squash last contenders Essex.Sai Sudharsan had led Surrey’s batting with an exceptional 73 before Jordan Clark came in and struck 50 not out.Surrey were eventually bowled out for 207, 93 runs short of winning the crown, and a 12-run deficit to Hampshire, which was increased by one in a truncated 20 balls before bad light ended proceedings for the day.Surrey needed to get to 300 in 110 overs to make sure they claimed the bonus points required to be confirmed champions for a second year in a row. They began the day on 47 for 2, replying to Hampshire’s 219, and by the time Ryan Patel had hoicked to deep midwicket off Dawson, they had only added 13 more runs in 53 minutes. It would be Patel’s last action of the match as Jamie Smith will come in for him for the third innings of the match.Getting to that 300 mark quickly was clearly not the priority – with winning the match and lifting the trophy on a high prominently mentioned by Tom Lawes the previous evening.Hampshire’s tidy bowling didn’t help the run rate, neither did Ben Foakes taking 36 balls to get off the mark and even then, it was only a misfield that helped him move from a blob. He never would look comfortable at the crease, although was perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw going back to Dawson.Sudharsan was by no means lucid in his batting, but his classical style was pleasant on the eyes and accumulated runs at a workmanlike tempo.Sai Sudharsan sets off for a run•Steve Paston/PA Photos/Getty Images
The 21-year-old is one to watch in world cricket having struck a stunning 96 in the IPL final early this year, to go with two centuries in nine previous first-class matches. His defence was solid, but his coup de gras was his varied shot-making, with proficiency shown on the drive, sweep and wristiness.Sudharsan reached his maiden Championship fifty in exactly 100 balls. He had been joined by Will Jacks – who had replaced five-wicket haul celebrator Lawes after returning from England duty – and the rate of scoring increased for a short period.Jacks twice took on Ian Holland’s medium pace and twice dispatched the ball over the ropes, which helped the morning scoring to 67 runs.Sudharsan was the victim of big bounce out of the footholds from Dawson, as the Indian gloved to short leg, with Jacks leg before to James Fuller in the following over.Dawson picked up his fourth when Cam Steel was lbw and Holland bowled a swinging Jamie Overton.Clark belligerently scored a 75-ball half-century, his 21st in first-class cricket, as he put in 32 with Kemar Roach before the West Indian was caught at first slip with the second new ball.Clark also scored all 15 runs with Dan Worrall at the other end, before the Australian-born seamer was bowled by Dawson – his 17th wicket in September.Surrey’s failure to reach 300 is not a huge problem in their pursuit of glory. Essex are stuttering against Northamptonshire and if they don’t reach 400, Surrey will automatically be champions.Despite 18 overs still remaining, only 20 balls were bowled and a single run scored as bad light prevented Hampshire from really getting their second innings moving under lights.

Leeds United supporters owe a huge amount to boss Daniel Farke for the work he’s done in stabilising the club after dropping into the Championship back in 2023.
The German took the reins looking to secure an immediate return, but most importantly, aiming to keep the core of the side together to secure success in England’s second tier.
Since his appointment, he’s won 49 games out of a possible 80 league outings, achieving a win percentage of 62% – a simply staggering feat, one that has set them up for success this time around.
The Whites have blown the majority of sides away this campaign, losing just three times in 34 Championship matches, sitting seven points clear of third with just 12 games remaining.
Farke has built a superb side for England’s second-tier, including two players who have both joined after his own appointment at Elland Road, playing vital roles in the recent success.
Tanaka & Piroe’s stats for Leeds in 2024/25
Midfielder Ao Tanaka has been a pivotal cog within the Leeds side over the past couple of months, nailing down his place as a regular starter after his £3.5m move in the summer.
The Japanese international has started every Championship game in 2025, showcasing his importance to the German, chipping in with three goals – subsequently making a huge impact at both ends of the pitch.
He’s even registered two assists this campaign, providing Joel Piroe with the ammunition needed within the final third, which has seen the Dutchman lead the club’s goalscoring charts in 2024/25.
The 25-year-old has certainly had his doubters during his time in Yorkshire after his £10m transfer, but has silenced his critics in recent weeks, registering 15 goals in his 34 league outings to date.
However, despite the impressive performances from the aforementioned duo, they are still valued lower than one player who departed Elland Road a couple of years ago – starring beyond anyone’s imagination after his transfer.
The former Leeds ace worth more than Tanaka & Piroe combined
Back in the summer of 2018, Leeds announced the signing of 18-year-old defender Leif Davis from Morecambe, originally linking up with the academy side with a view to moving him into the senior ranks.
The left-back would make his first-team debut in the same season, but limited to just minutes off the substitutes’ bench, something which would become a pattern during his first three years in Yorkshire.
Former Leeds defender Leif Davis.
After just 14 appearances across three seasons, Davis would move to Championship outfit Bournemouth on a season-long loan, returning for pre-season ahead of 2022/23, but he would play no part for the Whites that campaign.
Instead, the 25-year-old would move to League One Ipswich Town for just £1m, a move that would catapult him to huge success, handing him that break he so desperately needed in the professional game.
During his first season at Portman Road, he registered three goals and 14 assists, helping the Tractor Boys secure promotion back to the second tier, before making it back-to-back the following year.
Davis managed to achieve 20 goal contributions for Kieran McKenna’s side, playing a vital role in ending their Premier League exile, preventing his former employers as a result – something which would’ve been hard to see for the Whites hierarchy.
The full-back has impressed in the top-flight despite Ipswich’s struggles, scoring a phenomenal goal against Leicester City, with the two promoted sides desperately battling for survival.
However, the 25-year-old has seen a 2000% increase on the fee paid for his services a couple of years ago, now valued at £21m by Transfermarkt, a fee which is more than Tanaka and Piroe combined with the pair valued at £3.3m and £11.6m respectively.

Given his rapid rise to the top of the English game, coupled with his increase in price over the last few years, it’s evident that the club sold him too prematurely – potentially playing a key role this campaign had they kept him.
High-quality left-backs in the modern game are extremely hard to find, with Leeds’ loss now Ipswich’s gain, with the Tractor Boys having themselves a talented ace who could be sold down the line for a mammoth profit.
Leeds hit gold selling "dangerous" striker who's being outscored by Bogle
Leeds United certainly made the right call in allowing the talented star to depart Elland Road.
Journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that Everton are considering making an offer for a “superb” player during the summer transfer window.
Everton eyeing midfield reinforcements this summer
The Blues continue to be linked with summer signings now that top flight status is secure, with Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard the latest player named as a possible target. The 30-year-old is now a proven Premier League player, so he would bring a wealth of experience in the middle of the park.
Manor Solomon has also been backed to join Everton at the end of the season, following a productive spell on loan at Leeds United in 2024/25. The winger is a Tottenham player currently, but they are willing to sell him permanently in the summer.
Leeds United'sManorSolomoncelebrates scoring their first goal
Speaking of loanees, a fresh report has stated that the Blues are unlikely to retain Jack Harrison’s services beyond this summer, as his second year in a row at Goodison Park nears its conclusion. He appears likely to return to Leeds instead of joining the Merseysiders for good, perhaps taking Solomon’s place in Yorkshire.
As for important current midfielders, David Moyes is thought to be a driving force behind Abdoulaye Doucoure signing a new deal, seeing him as a key figure moving forward. He is out of contract in June, at which point he will be able to depart on a free transfer.
Everton planning offer for "superb" centre-back
It’s not only in the centre of the park the Toffees want to strengthen however, as according to Nixon on Patreon [via Give Me Sport], Everton are ready to make an offer for Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordonez ahead of the summer window.
The 20-year-old is valued at £40m by the Belgian side, with Aston Villa the other Premier League club mentioned as suitors in the update.
Ordonez is a young player with a lot of potential, hence his price tag, so it is no surprise Everton view him as an exciting long-term option for the summer.
He's outscoring Beto: Everton may regret selling Finch Farm star for £7.5m
Everton must rue this £7.5m sale of “outstanding” star who’s now outscoring Beto
ByConnor Holden Mar 3, 2025
While James Tarkowski has enjoyed another strong campaign, he turns 33 years of age later this year, and there are doubts about how long Jarrad Branthwaite will remain at the club.
Ordonez had the misfortune of scoring an own goal against Manchester City in the Champions League in January, but he has shone this season overall, averaging six clearances per game across 10 appearances in the competition. Meanwhile, football talent scout Jacek Kulig has described him as “superb”.
While at his most effective as a centre-back, the four-cap Ecuador international can also do a job at full-back, which could appeal to Moyes, strengthening his defensive options and no longer having to rely on ageing figures such as Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman in that position.
The forgotten £60m midfielder set the Red Devils on their way to the Europa League final with the first strike in an emphatic 4-1 comeback win
Mason Mount reminded Manchester United why they invested so much in him as the forgotten midfielder guided the Red Devils to an emphatic 4-1 win over Athletic Club, sealing their passage to their Europa League final with a 7-1 aggregate scoreline.
For much of the game, United did not look like a team with a comfortable lead from the first leg. They fell behind to a wonderful strike from Mikel Jauregizar after shaky defending from Harry Maguire and did not look comfortable for large parts of the second half. But Ruben Amorim responded with a triple change and Mount was the key part in a resurgent display.
The once England midfielder equalised with a curling strike which had shades of Federico Macheda's famous goal against Aston Villa in 2009. The goal calmed the nerves in Old Trafford but instead of settling down United turned on the gas and accelerated towards a resounding win.
Casemiro put them in front, Rasmus Hojlund then stretched their lead before Mount fittingly rounded off his stunning cameo with a long-range lob in added time. United will play Tottenham in the final at San Mames, where both sides will have the chance to avenge their truly terrible campaigns by qualifying for the Champions League.

Goalkeeper & Defence
Andre Onana (6/10):
Surprisingly transmitted security on a nervy evening for everyone else. Confident in the air, catching crosses which he would normally punch. Not much he could do about the goal.
Victor Lindelof (4/10):
Looked anxious throughout. Made several rash challenges and his positioning was poor. Amorim will hope he has better centre-back options for the final as he looks like the weak link.
Harry Maguire (5/10):
Made two big mistakes leading to Jauregizar's goal but also did well to clear his lines on other occasions. A reminder that he is far from flawless even though United will be praying he remains fit for the final.
Leny Yoro (8/10):
The calmest and most authoritative defender wearing red although he did much more than defend. Shuttled forward like a prime era Gerard Pique and played a big part in Mount's clincher.

Midfield
Noussair Mazraoui (6/10):
Made a couple of good clearances and some poor ones. Picked up an early booking for an elbow and it led to him being taken off for Shaw.
Casemiro (6/10):
A shadow his dominant performance at San Mames for much of the game but showed his class and enduring winning mentality once the substitutes came on. His aggression helped pin Athletic back and showed excellent movement to sneak in behind the defence to glance in Fernandes' cross to give United the lead.
Manuel Ugarte (4/10):
His passing was very loose and he gave the ball away too often and in dangerous areas. Predictably taken off on 62 minutes.
Patrick Dorgu (6/10):
One of the brighter sparks, offering incisive movement down the left. Played a lovely ball to Garnacho which the Argentine wasted and could have had a penalty when he went to ground from a challenge from Andoni Gorosabel.
AFP
Attack
Alejandro Garnacho (5/10):
Lively as usual but fluffed all his best opportunities. Julen Agirrezabala beat him to one through ball and then saved a one-on-one. His best chance was right before half-time when he dinked the ball wide of the near post when he had the time to dribble round him.
Rasmus Hojlund (6/10):
Led the line well albeit without creating much danger until he rubber stamped the victory with his close-range tap in.
Bruno Fernandes (7/10):
Quieter than usual both in terms of his play and body language but he grew into the game and led the team forward in their excellent latter spell. Set up Casemiro's goal for his 19th Europa League assist, a competition record.

Subs & Manager
Mason Mount (10/10):
The impact United had in mind when they paid Chelsea £60m for him. His brilliant goal settled all nerves and he was on fire from then on. Pulled off a stylish back-heel before having the final say with his audacious lob.
Luke Shaw (6/10):
Helped United get a grip on the game.
Amad Diallo (8/10):
His energy and verve put fear into Athletic and paved the way for the comeback. Provided the cross for Hojlund's strike.
Harry Amass (N/A):
Got involved in the forward play as United ran riot.
Kobbie Mainoo (N/A):
Came on at the perfect time.
Ruben Amorim (9/10):
Diagnosed the problem perfectly with his substitutions, which turned the game right back in his side's favour. And six months after taking charge he's taking the team to a European final.

WHAT HAPPENED?
Former Manchester United, Juventus and France star Paul Pogba is reportedly prioritizing a return to Europe, amid reported interest from MLS side D.C. United.
ESPN reports that the 32-year-old is interested in a future move to MLS, but at the moment, is focused on returning to Europe.
Pogba is of the belief that he can still play at a UEFA Champions League-caliber level, and is aiming to sign with a club competing in the competition. The 2014 FIFA World Cup Young Player of the Tournament believes it will give him the best chance to return to his national team in hopes that manager Didier Deschamps will call his name to represent at the 2026 competition in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
However, the Frenchman is set to consider all offers at the moment, including D.C. United's reported interest.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Pogba has not played competitively for over 20 months, since September 2023, after testing positive for DHEA – a banned substance that raises testosterone levels. Playing for Serie A side Juventus at the time when banned, the Italian anti-doping agency banned Pogba for four years. Claiming he unknowingly took the substance, Pogba appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which reduced his suspension to 18 months, and he was cleared to return to play in March of this year.
Juventus and the 32-year-old agreed to a contract termination last November, making him a free agent. He is now available to sign for whomever he wishes, as long as the two parties come to an agreement.
The report added that in March of this year, Pogba was the subject of interest from both Fiorentina and Marseille, as well as multiple clubs in Spain. He reportedly rejected approaches from Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
ESPN added in its reporting that Pogba, who owns a home in Miami and has been living there since November, has held talks with David Beckham – co-owner of Inter Miami.
DID YOU KNOW?
The last time Pogba played a full 90 minutes of competitive action at the senior level was three years ago for Manchester United in a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League.
