Jofra Archer: 'This is not a wicket to bend your back on'

Fast bowler rues English misfortune with the ball as Pakistan take advantage in first Test

Andrew Miller06-Aug-2020Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah might beg to differ after their thrilling displays of unfettered fast bowling, but Jofra Archer believes that this Emirates Old Trafford is “not one to bend your back on” as Pakistan claimed the ascendancy in the opening exchanges of the first Test.Speaking to the media at the close of the second day’s play, Archer insisted that England’s own bowlers had been unlucky rather than outplayed, after a brilliant Shan Masood century had underpinned Pakistan’s first-innings 326, and added that on another day they might have been “eight or nine [wickets] down in two or three sessions”.”I don’t think that it particularly went our way,” Archer told Sky Sports. “A lot of balls today probably beat the bat or got the edge, we had two lbws turned around, one with a feather. I think we bowled well as a unit, but we didn’t have a lot of luck. Most of their singles were a bit suicidal and it only takes one direct hit and then who knows. They were very lucky with the running as well.”Archer himself finished with the creditable figures of 3 for 59 in 22 overs, including two in two balls as he got stuck into the tail late in Pakistan’s innings. However, his performance was arguably more notable for the moments that he wasn’t involved – particularly in the lead-up to the second new ball, when Joe Root opted instead to use his own offspin in tandem with Dom Bess, and again thereafter, when Chris Woakes partnered Bess to bowl a spell of short-pitched deliveries at Shadab Khan – a role that might have been better suited to Archer himself, especially as he hadn’t been called upon for nearly two hours.”It was approaching a new ball, and [Root] he just wanted all of the bowlers to be fresh,” Archer explained. “There was a time last night that I probably got off the hook as well, when the umpires said it was a bit too dark. I probably wanted to bowl then too, but I guess the captain knows best and, to be honest, we’ve got more than enough bowlers here to do a job. I wouldn’t be upset at all if it didn’t start.”Jofra Archer celebrates with Joe Root•Getty Images

The haphazard deployment of Archer is becoming a running theme of his Test career, with Root attracting huge criticism for over-using him in his early Tests – not least on debut at Lord’s last summer where he bowled 44 overs in the match and was touching 96mph in the spell in which he felled Steve Smith with a devastating bouncer.Archer never came close to such speeds today, clocking in the high-80s for the most part. And while Pakistan’s attack leader, Mohammad Abbas, proved with his brilliant new-ball display that pace does not need to be everything if you have the skills to exploit a fuller length, he also said that the decision to throttle back had not necessarily been a conscious one.”It’s not deliberate,” he said. “It’s not every day you’re going to come in and 90mph. I’ve seen Shah started bowling 90 so we’ll see how he goes on later on tomorrow morning or afternoon. No one’s robots so I’ll be very, very interested to see what he can produce a bit later.ALSO READ: Jos Buttler needs to convert after letting Pakistan off the hook”This wicket is not a wicket you’re really going to try to bend your back on. We bowled first and there was a little bit there in the morning but eventually as the game’s gone on…actually it’s spinning on day two so that says a lot about the wicket right now.”Archer did, however, concede that the elbow fracture that he sustained in South Africa might have been at the back of his mind as he settled for rhythm over shock.”I had one injury in pretty much a year of cricket, and it was my first since being in the England team, so I’m very happy to be back, touch wood,” he said. “It’s taken a little bit to trust it. Sometimes you get an ache and think ‘oh no, it’s gone again’, but I’ve got reassurance from the medical staff that it’s not the case.”It’s about putting mind over matter, but everything else is pretty okay. I’ve landed the ball where I wanted to. Everyone’s going to bowl a boundary ball at some point of their spell, but I was more happy with where the majority of the balls have gone.”Archer was speaking for the first time since his breach of England’s biosecure environment during the West Indies series – a transgression that required him to be dropped for the second Test at Old Trafford.”I’m just glad to be back out playing again,” he said. “Whatever happened in the last series is gone.”

Wolves one of main candidates for £9m ace with more assists than Ait-Nouri

After an excellent first season under Gary O'Neil, Wolverhampton Wanderers have turned their attention towards rewarding the manager with a possible left-back boost in the transfer window.

Wolves transfer news

For clubs outside of the Premier League's top six, impressive campaigns can come at a price with those at the top of English football and around Europe more likely to circle around their top stars. And that looks set to be the case at Wolves this summer, with Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha already linked with summer departures to Arsenal and Manchester United respectively.

Wolves star Pedro Neto celebrates

The attacking duo enjoyed standout seasons in the Midlands, earning such links as a result, with Neto battling injuries whilst still maintaining his form when available throughout the season.

Both departures would undoubtedly deal Wolves a frustrating hole and two major gaps to fill, but they're not the only ones linked with a move away. Reports have also cast doubts over Rayan Ait-Nouri's future in the Midlands, with Liverpool mentioned as a potential destination. Suddenly, O'Neil could be looking at losing three of his best players in what would leave his side instantly battling against the odds in the Premier League at the start of next season.

After being pushed aside under Julen Lopetegui, Ait-Nouri found himself restored to the Wolves side by O'Neil this season in what turned out to be a stroke of genius by the former Bournemouth boss. Now, however, if the defender repays that faith by heading for the exit door, those at Molineux may have a potential successor lined up.

According to A Bola, Wolves are one of the main candidates to sign Francisco Moura from Famalicao this summer in a deal that could be worth just €10m (£9m). Moura has impressed in Portugal and could follow a famous trend of Portuguese players finding themselves on their way to the Midlands, following in the footsteps of the likes of Neto and Ruben Neves.

With five assists to his name – three more than Ait-Nouri managed this season – Moura certainly represents a solid option to turn to when looking to ease any potential summer blow.

Wolves wise to target Moura

Still just 24 years old, Moura would represent smart business for Wolves, especially if Ait-Nouri does leave in the coming months. The Famalicao man, at just £9m could quickly turn into a bargain deal if he took his form from Portugal into the Premier League. Replacing Ait-Nouri will be no easy task, however, with the left-back attracting the interest of Liverpool for good reason.

Having bounced back well from losing Neves last summer, Wolves will be hoping to enter the start of next season in similar form no matter who they lose in the coming months. What's more, if links to Moura are anything to go by, the Midlands club could be willing to spend when it comes to replacing any outgoings this summer.

Nottingham Forest in contact to sign £7k-p/w star in potential £20m+ move

Nottingham Forest could well have identified their first signing of the summer, but will have to pay a premium to get the deal done, according to one report.

Forest on the verge of safety but concerns ahead

Despite a pretty dismal season all round and a points deduction for breaching the Premier League's financial fair play regulations, Nuno Espírito Santo's side look set to stay in the Premier League for at least another season.

The City Ground outfit need just three points from their last two games to be mathematically sure of being a top-flight club next season, though a point this weekend against Chelsea could also be enough should Luton and Burnley both fail to win their games.

But the problems don't stop there for Forest, as it has emerged that they are likely to need to sell one of their star men again this summer to remain compliant with Premier League regulations, just 12 months after parting ways with Brennan Johnson.

Newfound star Murillo and midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White appear to be the most likely candidates to leave, and it appears that should the former depart the City Ground, the Midlands outfit have already lined up his successor.

Forest eye up £20m defender

That is according to French outlet L'Equipe, who name the Reds as one of three Premier League sides working to try and sign impressive Toulouse defender Logan Costa.

The 6 foot 3 centre-back has racked up 29 Ligue 1 appearances this season, grabbing a goal and an assist for his troubles, while he also went to the Africa Cup of Nations with Cape Verde, where his nation were knocked out by South Africa on penalties.

His form has caught the eye of Premier League sides, with Forest and Fulham both keen as well as another unnamed club, and the French outlet claim that a "big transfer" is "looming" for the 23-year-old.

Offer made: Nottingham Forest the "main interested party" in £2k-p/w ace

He could be a fresh face at the City Ground next season.

ByBen Browning May 7, 2024

Forest could well be that move, and they have already made the first move by making an enquiry for the defender. Costa still has two years left to run on his £7k per week deal in the south of France, and it is added that Toulouse would demand in excess of 20m euros (£16m) to let him leave.

In an ideal world, they are aiming for a record fee, which currently stands at the £20m that Issa Diop moved to West Ham United for in 2018, though whether or not they do net a record sale for another young promising defender remains to be seen.

There is also thought to be interest from La Liga duo Atletico Madrid and Villarreal, with Diego Simeone's side in particular on the hunt for a new defender with Mario Hermoso seemingly leaving on a free transfer this summer.

But should Murillo depart the City Ground, Forest would have the funds to meet Toulouse's demands for Costa, and could find themselves among the frontrunners for his signature.

Chiesa has been unable to make the move with the end of the summer transfer window only four days away. However, Liverpool are pondering upon a late move for the winger.

49ers eyeing surprise Leeds move to sign new striker with 204 career goals

Leeds United are eyeing up a move for a Premier League-proven striker ahead of the summer transfer window.

Leeds targeting attackers

With just three game weeks left of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, Leeds United remain firmly in the hunt for an automatic promotion spot. The Yorkshire outfit sit just two points off Ipswich Town and one point adrift of Leicester City in what promises to be a tight end to the season.

Should they indeed secure promotion, though, the Peacocks will need to ensure their squad is once again good enough to compete at the highest level. As a result, a busy summer is expected for the Whites, with a number of players already being tipped to make the move to Elland Road. Leeds are believed to be eyeing a "bargain" summer move for Southampton striker Che Adams, while the return of Kalvin Phillips to Elland Road has also been discussed.

Kalvin Phillips for West Ham

Elsewhere, reports in February claimed Leeds are one of several clubs eyeing up a swoop to sign Kilmarnock gem Bobby Wales at the end of the season. Now, a fresh name with proven Premier League quality has been linked with a move to Yorkshire ahead of the summer window.

Leeds eye surprise move for 204-goal striker

According to Star [via Sport Witness], Leeds are said to be a ‘surprise suitor’ for striker Michy Batshuayi. The Belgian joined current side Fenerbache from Chelsea in 2022 for €3.5m and has since found the net 41 times in 68 outings for the Turkish outfit.

However, the 30-year-old's current contract expires this summer and though there is reportedly the option to extend that deal by a year, Star claim that Batshuayi is likely to depart Fenerbache this summer and that Leeds are following his situation closely.

Belgium's MichyBatshuayiin action

Should Leeds indeed secure promotion this season, signing someone of Batshuayi's experience would be a smart move. The forward has netted an impressive 204 goals for club and country across his career and while his time at Chelsea did not go as well as some may have hoped, he still received high praise, including from former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

"It was interesting to see not just the player – I kind of knew the quality Michy had and it’s always good to see that up close – but also the personality. Since early season, how he’s trained, his demeanour, his positivity, and quality when he’s come on, which is obviously the most important thing, have been top class.

"When Tammy is scoring regular goals and getting a firm foot in the team, that’s not easy. It’s the same for Oli [Giroud]. Michy has shown all the right ways of handling that. He has been very good for us so far, and that positive spirit when you’re not playing regularly is not just important for him, cause that’s tough sometimes, but it’s important for the group. He deserves extra praise for that. He’s positive, hard-working, loves scoring goals."

A move to Elland Road could be one to watch, but you'd expect Leeds will need to earn promotion first.

Newcastle chiefs monitoring chance to hijack "amazing" Chelsea target

After failing to make it back-to-back top four finishes in the Premier League this season, Newcastle United are reportedly set to turn their focus towards the summer transfer window, when they could pounce to hijack a player Chelsea are currently leading the way for.

Newcastle transfer news

After previously walking a fine line with Financial Fair Play rules, the rumours have circled regarding potential departures at St James' Park this summer, with Bruno Guimaraes at the centre of that. Reports have even suggested that the Brazilian is expected to leave Newcastle this summer, with the likes of Manchester City among those interested in securing his signature, though he has recently bought a house on Tyneside.

It would be quite the blow to lose a player of Guimaraes' calibre, there's no doubting that, but his exit would at least hand PIF further license to spend in the coming months, resulting in some much-needed improvement for Eddie Howe's side.

douglas-luiz-bruno-guimaraes-liverpool-opinion

After a summer transfer window to forget last year too, with Sandro Tonali stealing the headlines for all the wrong reasons since completing a move, the Magpies will aim to make up for lost time, which could see a top forward arrive.

According to Sports Lens, PIF and Newcastle chiefs are lying in wait for their opportunity to hijack Chelsea's summer move for Ivan Toney, who will reportedly cost between £55m and £60m in the coming months.

It would be quite the full circle moment for Toney, who left Newcastle as a player who failed to cut it in the Premier League back in 2018 after several loan spells away. Now an England international and player in demand, Toney could make his St James' Park return to become the perfect partner to Alexander Isak, showing Callum Wilson the door in the process.

"Amazing" Toney can make Newcastle return to partner Isak

Toney has already shown glimpses of his quality once more since returning from a lengthy ban due to breaching betting rules, and a full pre-season would likely see him return to his very best. And if anyone needs reminders of what that best looks like, only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane scored more than Toney's 20 goals in the Premier League last season.

Given that Wilson is still struggling with injuries and not getting any younger, now is the time for Newcastle to strike when it comes to getting the best out of Isak by welcoming a fresh partner to lead the line.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank will be well aware of the type of player he is likely to lose this summer, having previously said via Brentford's official website: "Ivan is amazing in many, many aspects.

"The way he copes with pressure and distractions is amazing. He’s been scoring goals, performing for the team and driving the team. He’s remarkable. I can only talk about the Ivan that I see every day around the place and he’s a fantastic person around the group. He’s got that unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players, and every staff member."

Senior Tottenham official sent to club as Lange eyes club’s star defender

A senior Tottenham official has been sent to run the rule over a club's star mainstay defender recently, with technical director Johan Lange's preparations for the window well and truly underway.

Spurs eyeing new centre-back signing for Ange

Despite bringing in Radu Dragusin from Genoa in January for around £25 million, reports over the last few weeks have claimed that Ange Postecoglou and co are eager to bolster their back line further.

Tottenham could move for £43m star in "one of the biggest transfer stories"

Spurs threaten to derail Arsenal and Chelsea’s plans.

ByEmilio Galantini Mar 11, 2024

Spurs are among the suitors for Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly, for instance, with the Englishman's contract expiring this summer. He may soon be a readily available free agent, and his top-flight experience makes him a very good option for the north Londoners.

A more ambitious open who's also been floated is Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite, coming amid his impressive season at Goodison Park as he puts himself in the conversation for a call-up to England's Euro 2024 squad.

There have been suggestions that Spurs wish to sign two "top-level" centre-backs in 2024, and with Dragusin sealed, they're set to go for another in the summer.

"The situation hasn't changed, and Tottenham have always intended to sign two top-level centre-backs across 2024," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport recently, who listed other potential targets.

"They’ve got one through the door, and now, in the summer window, the plan is to go after another. Calafiori and Morato might be mentioned now, but the net is being cast wider than that. They’ve got some interesting options opening up to them. Still, from what I understand, they’re not committing at this stage, even though they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window similar to how they did in the winter market.”

In these last two windows, the Lilywhites have shown a trend of buying young stars for their backline, with both Dragusin and Micky van de Ven under the age of 23. This indicates they're also considering the long-term and another defensive target with many years left ahead of him is Hull City centre-back Jacob Greaves.

Senior Tottenham official sent to Hull as Lange eyes Greaves

According to a report in The Mirror's print edition [10/03/2024], via TBR, Spurs sent a "senior" scout to run the rule over Greaves earlier this month as Postecoglou's side seemingly take an interest in the Englishman.

Tipped to be a "special" player by Grant McCann, Greaves has started 36 Championship matches as a mainstay for the Tigers, even bagging two goals and four assists in that time.

Jacob Greaves in action for Hull City in the Championship.

"The kid is going to be special, it’s as simple as that," said former Hull boss McCann, who exposed him to first-team football early doors.

"We don’t want him to have a dead year and when I say a dead year I think he’s beyond Under 23s football. We’re working hard trying to do that at the minute so we can get him exposed to men’s football."

Batsman took supersition to the extreme for fear team’s innings would go down the pan

Stories of superstitious cricketers not moving round the dressing room during tense moments are not uncommon, but Joe Denly took the fear of bad juju to extremes when he found himself confined to to the loo during Ben Stokes’ historic knock at Headingley.Denly said while some of his team-mates were enjoying the best seats in the house as Stokes and Jack Leach carried England to the most unlikely of victories, the only throne available to him was of the porcelain variety.”I’m not a very good watcher of cricket when I get out,” Denly told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The first 10-15 minutes is sulking and reliving how I got out. That last hour I was stuck in the urinal – toilet area of the changing room.”There were a few guys out back in the physio room, a few guys in viewing area and we all stayed in our position and patrolled our area for the final hour. I felt every time I sat down and watched a bit of cricket we seemed to lose a wicket. I took myself off to the lovely urinals and paced around there for the last hour.”Denly confirmed he would open the batting in place of Jason Roy, who will drop down to No. 4, as reported by ESPNcricinfo last week.”I got a call from Joe Root after a bit of time off and he said he’d like me to go at the top of the order and try to get us off to a good start,” Denly said.”Obviously Jason is going to bat four and that’s great for English cricket. With Jason Roy in the team we are a better team and with him coming in at four, hopefully with the new ball worn off and myself and Rory Burns doing our job at the top, it allows him to come in and play his way. He’s a great player to have there.”Denly was England’s top-scorer with 12 in their woeful first innings of 67 all out while his 50 in the second innnings was overshadowed by Stokes’ match-winning 135. But Denly didn’t mind.”Obviously it was a proud moment but as any top-order batter you come off after getting out wanting more runs,” Denly said. “Having made 50 it would have been nice to go on and get a bigger score, but thankfully we had ‘King Stokes’ coming in and finishing it for us.”I don’t think it’s going to sink in for a while. It was a remarkable day and one that will be remembered forever, so to be part of it was very special.”
