Interestingly, Olabe has a unique connection to Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta. In 2004, it was Olabe who signed Arteta, bringing him into the Spanish side, where the midfielder began to make a name for himself.

Rodgers could land "exciting" Kyogo heir in Celtic move for £8.5m star

It is the start of July and this means that Celtic are finally back in action for pre-season this month to prepare for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign.

The summer transfer window officially opened for business in June and the Hoops are yet to dip into the market to bolster their options across the park as of yet.

One area in which they could look to strengthen is striker after Ireland international Adam Idah returned to Norwich City at the end of his loan deal.

Last month, Football Insider reported that Kyogo Furuhashi would be allowed to leave for an offer of £25m but it remains to be seen whether or not any teams are prepared to pay that for him.

Why Celtic need to look beyond Kyogo Furuhashi

The Japan international has been the first-choice number nine for Celtic in each of the last two Scottish Premiership seasons, with 62 starts across those two campaigns.

However, Kyogo's form in front of goal has declined over the last 12 months and Brendan Rodgers must now look to life beyond the forward at Parkhead.

As you can see in the table above, the experienced attacker's finishing has fallen off a cliff. He was incredibly wasteful in the top-flight last term, scoring just 14 goals and missing 24 'big chances'.

Kyogo Furuhashi

Kyogo also turns 30 next season and Rodgers could want a younger centre-forward to come in as his heir to offer a long-term number nine option for the Hoops.

Who Celtic could replace Kyogo Furuhashi with

The Hoops reportedly hold a long-standing interest in Brondby striker Mathias Kvistgaarden, who is valued at around £8.5m, and he could be the perfect heir to the current Celtic marksman.

Like Kyogo, he is not a traditional, towering, number nine. The Danish whiz stands at 5 foot 8, one inch taller than the Japanese ace, and can provide an agile, dynamic, forward option for the Bhoys, rather than being a target man.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old striker is also coming off the back of a solid season in the Superliga, with 13 direct goal contributions in 18 starts.

Kvistgaarden, who was once described as one of a number of "exciting" young stars by talent scout Jacek Kulig, also scored six goals and provided four assists in nine starts in the Championship Round in the Superliga at the end of last term.

This means that the Celtic target has racked up 14 goals and nine assists in his last 27 league starts, along with boasting a higher conversion rate than Kyogo.

At the age of 22, Kvistgaarden is also seven years younger than the Japan international and has plenty of time left to develop and improve, which could make him a terrific long-term signing for the club.

Overall, the £8.5m gem appears to be a dream heir to the current Hoops forward due to his playstyle, threat in front of goal, age, and clinical finishing, which is why Rodgers should swoop for him this summer.

Tottenham make informal £30m proposal to sign "superb" player from Man City

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly sent an informal £30m proposal to sign a new player from Manchester City this summer.

Spurs already seal first summer signing

Ange Postecoglou may currently be away on pundit duty at Euro 2024, however, he outlined the need for change when it comes to his squad over the coming months. Speaking in May, the Australian said: "We need change. Change has to happen.

"You can’t want to alter your course and expect the same people are going to be on that. It’s just not going to happen. We’ve had two windows and we’ve had some development of players, for sure, but when I say we’ve still got a long way to go, that’s what I’m talking about. It’s impossible to say you’re going to have drastic change and yet expect everyone to be on that journey.

"It’s not for the want of trying. It’s just that we’re going to play a certain way, we’re going to train a certain way and we’re going to have a certain mindset. And that’s not for everyone. Whether it’s Liverpool or Arsenal, if you look at the beginning of their journeys, by the time they win the competition or have success, the team’s almost unrecognisable."

Tottenham have already secured a first summer signing, once again bringing back Timo Werner on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig, which includes an even cheaper option to buy this time round. Reports have suggested Tottenham can sign the German attacker in 2025 for around £8.5m.

Additions at the back also appear to be on Postecoglou’s to-do list, with claims that Spurs are leading the race to sign Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord, offering the right-back a north London contract.

A deal for the Dutch defender could be worth around £25m, however, he isn’t the only full-back target, with a new report suggesting a fresh name on Tottenham’s radar.

Tottenham make Yan Couto proposal

According to a report from Spain in the last 48 hours, Tottenham are one of three clubs vying to sign Yan Couto from Manchester City. Premier League rivals Aston Villa and La Liga side Girona are also keen, with the Brazilian spending the last two seasons out on loan with the Spanish side.

It is stated that have Spurs have shown a strong interest, with a proposal that could exceed €35m (£30m), so Daniel Levy and co appear to have made an informal offer.

City would rather not sell to a direct rival in Spurs or Villa, but money could talk with Girona possibly finding it hard to match the finances on offer in England. Couto, primarily a right-back who can also play further forward if needed, is 22 years of age and is actually out of contract at the Etihad Stadium in 2025.

The Brazilian, called “superb” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, signed for City in 2020 but is still yet to make an appearance under Pep Guardiola, and by the looks of things, his first taste of top-flight football in England could be with Spurs, should they win the race for his services.

Prem Sisodiya leads rout as Northants are crushed by Glamorgan

Prem Sisodiya celebrates a breakthrough•Getty Images

After winning their first four games, Northants lost their second successive Blast outing as Glamorgan completed their second win with 29 balls to spare. The visitors were dismissed in 17.2 overs, which did little for their run rate, while Glamorgan produced their best performance to date.Had David Lloyd, their aggressive opening batsman, been available for every game, instead of only the last two, Glamorgan might still have a realistic chance of qualifying. After opting to bat first on a slow pitch, the visitors were soon in trouble, losing their prolific openers after just seven balls. Prem Sisodiya, who has been Glamorgan’s most effective bowler in the competition, trapped Richard Levi leg before with the fourth ball of the innings, then Paul Stirling overbalanced to his first ball from Andrew Salter and was stumped for a single.Worse was to follow for Northants, as two more wickets fell to leave them struggling on 33 for 4 after the Powerplay, although the batsmen failed to help their cause by playing some careless shots instead of attempting to build an innings.Tom Sole, son of the former Scotland rugby captain David, was his team’s top scorer with 25, playing some inventive strokes, and of the ten fours struck in the innings, three came from his bat, including one scoop which almost carried all the way for six.The five Glamorgan bowlers returned satisfactory figures, with Sisodiya and Timm van der Gugten taking three apiece, while Northants’ attack appeared to have surrendered before the second innings began.Needing to score at only five runs an over ,Lloyd, playing in only his second game of the season because of injury, tucked in to Sanderson’s gentle medium pace by hitting him for three fours in his first over that cost fourteen runs, before Nathan Buck was plundered for fifteen in his first. There was little respite for the other bowlers as Selman struck Graeme White’s slow left arm spin into the River Taff at long-on, and Glamorgan’s openers were already half -way to their target-(52 for 0) at the end of the six over power play. The Northants spinners White and Cobb, also bowled accurately, taking a wicket apiece, conceding only thirty nine runs from their combined eight overs. After sharing an opening partnership of 68 in only overs, Lloyd and Selman departed in quick succession. Lloyd, after a sprightly 40 from 29 balls, with a six and four fours, pushed an innocuous delivery back to Cobb, before Selman was stumped off White after scoring 29.With fourteen runs required, Chris Cooke skied Gareth Berg to mid-on, but it made little difference to the outcome as the home team strolled to victory.

Arsenal agree personal terms for "electric" signing who'd revive Martinelli

While there are still a couple of weeks to go and plenty of football to be played, it would be fair to say that Arsenal have enjoyed another brilliant season under Mikel Arteta, one that could still end in Premier League glory.

The Spaniard’s side went into the campaign with the sting of last year’s collapse fresh in the mind, but instead of wilting under the pressure, they have shown that they are worthy of challenging Manchester City for domestic dominance.

That said, while almost every player in the squad has looked better than they did last year, Gabriel Martinelli has been underwhelming and, as a result, has struggled to make it into the starting XI of late.

Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli

However, based on recent reports, the North Londoners could soon land the perfect player to revive the Brazilian’s fortunes on the left – oh, and he’s already rejected Tottenham Hotspur.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Turkey (via TEAMtalk), Arsenal are keen on bringing Tottenham target and Fenerbahçe fullback Ferdi Kadioglu to the Emirates this summer.

The report has claimed that while the Lilywhites are interested in landing the 24-year-old’s signature, his agent has already met with Arsenal representatives and agreed to a ‘deal in principle.’

This means that for the Gunners to get the transfer over the line, they just need to agree a fee with Sarı Kanaryalar themselves, which, according to the report, could be as little as £26m.

Now, this would still represent a considerable investment from the Gunners in a player from a league outside of Europe’s traditional top five, but as he has the skills to revive Martinelli’s fortunes, it would likely be worth it.

How Kadioglu could revive Martinelli

On the whole, Arsenal have had a reasonably predictable lineup for the majority of the campaign thus far, with the same names generally starting week-in-week-out regardless of the opponent ahead of them, apart from on the left-hand side, that is.

So far this year, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Takehiro Tomiyasu, and Jakub Kiwior have all taken turns starting on the left of the back four. At the same time, Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, and Martinelli have come in and out of the XI on the left of the attack.

This constant chopping and changing has clearly had an impact on the former Ituano ace, as last season, when he knew it would be Granit Xhaka and the Ukrainian behind him, he was fantastic, scoring 15 goals and providing six assists in 46 appearances. A stable lineup could reignite his devastating attacking threat.

Ferdi Kadiolgu for Fenerbahce.

This is where Kadioglu could come in, as in the opinion of respected data analyst Ben Mattinson, the Turkey international’s impressive “stamina, athleticism and speed” would allow him to make constant overlapping runs with the Brazilian, thus allowing him to “cut in and shoot more frequently.”

Moreover, Mattinson claims that the “electric” fullback can play on either side of the backline and invert when in the final third, becoming a “part of the attacking line” to further increase the Gunners’ myriad of attacking options and bring a new dimension to the team’s approach.

Ultimately, if Arteta wants to bring Martinelli back to his very best next season, then signing Kadıoğlu is a brilliant way to do that and a fantastic way to increase the team’s attacking threat overall.

Multan Sultans, KKR owners express interest in Hundred investment

Ali Khan Tareen joins Venky Mysore in saying private backing would benefit ECB’s new tournament

Matt Roller and Danyal Rasool06-May-2020Multan Sultans co-owner Ali Khan Tareen and Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore have registered their interest in investing in teams in the Hundred, the ECB’s 100-ball competition which is due to start next summer after its recent postponement. The ECB initially rejected the involvement of private investment when devising its new city-based tournament, but the financial fallout of the Covid-19 crisis – which could cost the English game as much as £380 million (US$470m) – could prompt a softening of that stance. Chief executive Tom Harrison said last week that the pandemic could force the ECB into “a place where we have to look at some of those opportunities”.Tareen – whose father Jehangir is a long-time close advisor to prime minister Imran Khan – told ESPNcricinfo that he believes potential investors should have at least some links to the team they want a stake in. Having owned a house in Hampshire for the best part of a decade, Tareen wants to invest in the Southern Brave, if such an opportunity becomes possible.ALSO READ: Explainer: Will the Hundred make a profit?”I’m a Hampshire boy who loves Hampshire cricket,” he said. “I see it as a way to benefit the counties, so they get more money. If someone with no connections owns a side, they wouldn’t give a hoot about counties. Why would they? Someone like me, who’s an actual Hampshire fan, sees the real attraction of external investment as my opportunity to help Hampshire.”There shouldn’t be a case where the teams are sold fully to a random owner. I’ve heard of problems occurring at the CPL when owners haven’t been vetted, as well as the Global T20 in Canada. The ECB cannot afford to have issues like these happen to their league.”What I suggest is they find people not to own and run teams, but to contribute financially to them because they care about a team or have connections to that area. Even right now, one person doesn’t run the team, a board runs the team. Maybe that one person then gets to sit on the board for a year. They can then help grow the profile of their side and by extension the league in different countries, and leverage local connections. I get that most owners would want to control a side, but this isn’t about that.”Tareen, whose Sultans side finished top of the PSL’s group stages thanks to a data-driven strategy before Covid-19 curtailed the season, said that his ties with coaches and backroom staff could help Southern Brave succeed. “The likes of Andy Flower, Nathan Leamon, Azhar Mahmood, who’ve been involved internationally, perhaps I’d be able to convince them to join up more? That would benefit both the team and the county. As a Hampshire fan, to be a 10% owner, have a board seat, travel with the team, give your own input, is a massive attraction.”Ali Tareen won the ownership rights of the sixth team in the Pakistan Super LeagueEach county will receive an annual sum of £1.3m (US$1.6m) from the competition, and Tareen said that any private investors should keep in mind that the rationale behind the Hundred was in part to ensure the financial viability of the county game. “The counties are the main stakeholders from this and they need to benefit from the Hundred. With more money, they could benefit cricket in their region. The spirit of the investors needs to be that of benefactors, not profiteers.”Under the Hundred’s existing model, all eight teams are owned by the ECB with no private investors. Last week, a report by the advisory firm Oakwell Sports recommended that the ECB should consider selling equity in the teams to reduce the financial hit of Covid-19, and to help “unlock the south Asian, UK-based fanbase”. The report’s authors included Mike Fordham, who was a senior figure at management firm IMG when they helped the BCCI launch the IPL in 2008 and supported a private ownership model while working as head of the Hundred for two-and-a-half years at the ECB.Mysore, the CEO of Kolkata Knight Riders’ parent company Red Chillies Entertainment, which is owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, said that he had met with two ECB representatives “three or four years ago” while the possibility of private investment was being floated, and had engaged in “some interesting conversations” with Harrison in 2015 when the pair were in Barbados. Red Chillies purchased the Trinidad and Tobago franchise in the CPL in 2015, renaming the team Trinbago Knight Riders a year later.Unlike Tareen, Mysore suggested that the group’s interest in the competition would likely demand a controlling stake in a team. “A passive investment doesn’t make sense for us,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “If I go there I want to build a business. We probably do it better than anyone else: we know how to manage from a distance and how to leverage all aspects of running a cricket franchise.”If you go to Trinidad and Tobago – TKR is a household name, during the season if you walk into a restaurant everyone is wearing a TKR jersey. That’s the value that we bring. It has to be a meaningful partnership for us, and it has to be something where the league can also leverage our expertise, otherwise it doesn’t make a lot of sense.Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore shares the stage with the side’s newly appointed captain Dinesh Karthik•Kolkata Knight Riders”We’d be very open to evaluating it and would be very keen on it if it came about, but we don’t know all the details right now. As and when [the ECB] are ready, and if they ask us to evaluate it and send us a proposal, we’d look at it very positively and we’d be very keen.”Mysore said that if the company did invest, the ECB could “rest assured” that the Knight Riders brand would help to engage South Asian fans, both in the UK and overseas. “One market that TKR have been able to tap into is the diaspora in the US,” he said. “There’s a huge market there, and there’s a large number of people that fly into our games from Miami or New York. We can help unlock that market in the UK and bring in new viewerships from the diaspora from round the world.”[The ECB] have to figure out their situation – I know all the counties are involved, and how you balance all these things is important. I honestly don’t know whether the model can be tweaked sufficiently to bring in brands and other investors because of all the other stakeholders who are involved there. That’s going to be their challenge. [Private investment] would make the tournament much bigger.”Any shift towards involving private investors in the Hundred would require counties’ approval, and there is likely to be a review into the competition’s viability when the ECB’s incoming chairman Ian Watmore begins his tenure in August. The ECB decided against such a model in order to maintain control of the new teams but there would likely be no shortage of willing overseas investors. Kings XI Punjab’s owners purchased the St Lucia Zouks in February, while the companies behind PSL teams Peshawar Zalmi and Lahore Qalandars have previously expressed interest in global expansion.

Celtic messed up by releasing a star who could’ve been sold for £13m

Celtic have made a habit out of cashing in on some of their best talent over the years, including exciting Portuguese forward Jota last summer.

The likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Kristoffer Ajer, Odsonne Edouard, and Moussa Dembele have also been sold on by the Hoops after enjoying successful careers in Scotland.

Current Bhoys star Matt O'Riley has been linked with a move to Leeds United ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window, and Brendan Rodgers may need to fight to keep hold of the Denmark international.

Celtic midfielder Matt O'Riley.

However, the Hoops must also be aware that there is no guarantee that a player's value will stay the same or increase if they opt against selling them, as they found out the hard way with Olivier Ntcham, who they had a nightmare with.

The bid Celtic rejected for Olivier Ntcham

The Scottish giants swooped to sign the central midfielder from Premier League side Manchester City in the summer of 2017 for a reported fee of £4.5m, with Rodgers hailing him as "gifted" and "powerful" at the time.

Ntcham enjoyed a terrific debut campaign with the Bhoys, scoring nine goals and assisting six in 49 appearances in all competitions, and this led to interest from elsewhere.

As you can see in the table above, the Cameroon international played regularly domestically and in Europe for the Hoops, and chipped in with goals and assists on a semi-regular basis.

GOAL reported in the summer of 2018 that Portuguese giants Porto came in with an offer of £13m to sign the dynamo but it was rejected by Celtic, who were not willing to sell him, and that turned out to be a howler from the club.

Olivier Ntcham's Celtic career after 2018

The talented whiz missed 24 matches for club and country through injury during the 2018/19 campaign, which restricted him to 37 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops.

After another 18 months of action with the Scottish side, Ntcham left to join Marseille on loan for the second half of the 2020/21 season in Ligue 1, where he played just four times in the league.

Olivier Ntcham

His contract with Celtic then expired in the summer of 2021 and he moved to join Swansea in the English Championship on a free transfer that year.

He departed from Parkhead after four years, 147 competitive appearances, 24 goals, 13 assists, and nine trophies won after his move from Manchester City in 2017.

Whilst the club may look at his achievements on the pitch, with his attacking contributions towards their impressive trophy haul during that period, as justification for the £4.5m they spent on him, it is hard to argue against them having messed up with the rejected bid from Porto.

They turned down a chance to make a huge profit, of £8.5m, on the Cameroon international and then allowed him to walk away for nothing three years later.

This shows that they had a nightmare as they did not have a chance to benefit financially from the success he had on the field, despite having the chance to do so when the bid arrived at their desk, as his value dropped from £13m to £0 when Ntcham left for nothing.
