A senior Tottenham official has been sent to run the rule over a club's star mainstay defender recently, with technical director Johan Lange's preparations for the window well and truly underway.
Spurs eyeing new centre-back signing for Ange
Despite bringing in Radu Dragusin from Genoa in January for around £25 million, reports over the last few weeks have claimed that Ange Postecoglou and co are eager to bolster their back line further.

Spurs threaten to derail Arsenal and Chelsea’s plans.
ByEmilio Galantini Mar 11, 2024
Spurs are among the suitors for Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly, for instance, with the Englishman's contract expiring this summer. He may soon be a readily available free agent, and his top-flight experience makes him a very good option for the north Londoners.
A more ambitious open who's also been floated is Everton starlet Jarrad Branthwaite, coming amid his impressive season at Goodison Park as he puts himself in the conversation for a call-up to England's Euro 2024 squad.
There have been suggestions that Spurs wish to sign two "top-level" centre-backs in 2024, and with Dragusin sealed, they're set to go for another in the summer.

"The situation hasn't changed, and Tottenham have always intended to sign two top-level centre-backs across 2024," said journalist Dean Jones to GiveMeSport recently, who listed other potential targets.
"They’ve got one through the door, and now, in the summer window, the plan is to go after another. Calafiori and Morato might be mentioned now, but the net is being cast wider than that. They’ve got some interesting options opening up to them. Still, from what I understand, they’re not committing at this stage, even though they want to make early moves in the summer transfer window similar to how they did in the winter market.”
In these last two windows, the Lilywhites have shown a trend of buying young stars for their backline, with both Dragusin and Micky van de Ven under the age of 23. This indicates they're also considering the long-term and another defensive target with many years left ahead of him is Hull City centre-back Jacob Greaves.
Senior Tottenham official sent to Hull as Lange eyes Greaves
According to a report in The Mirror's print edition [10/03/2024], via TBR, Spurs sent a "senior" scout to run the rule over Greaves earlier this month as Postecoglou's side seemingly take an interest in the Englishman.
Tipped to be a "special" player by Grant McCann, Greaves has started 36 Championship matches as a mainstay for the Tigers, even bagging two goals and four assists in that time.

"The kid is going to be special, it’s as simple as that," said former Hull boss McCann, who exposed him to first-team football early doors.
"We don’t want him to have a dead year and when I say a dead year I think he’s beyond Under 23s football. We’re working hard trying to do that at the minute so we can get him exposed to men’s football."
Batsman took supersition to the extreme for fear team’s innings would go down the pan

Stories of superstitious cricketers not moving round the dressing room during tense moments are not uncommon, but Joe Denly took the fear of bad juju to extremes when he found himself confined to to the loo during Ben Stokes’ historic knock at Headingley.Denly said while some of his team-mates were enjoying the best seats in the house as Stokes and Jack Leach carried England to the most unlikely of victories, the only throne available to him was of the porcelain variety.”I’m not a very good watcher of cricket when I get out,” Denly told BBC Radio 5 Live. “The first 10-15 minutes is sulking and reliving how I got out. That last hour I was stuck in the urinal – toilet area of the changing room.”There were a few guys out back in the physio room, a few guys in viewing area and we all stayed in our position and patrolled our area for the final hour. I felt every time I sat down and watched a bit of cricket we seemed to lose a wicket. I took myself off to the lovely urinals and paced around there for the last hour.”Denly confirmed he would open the batting in place of Jason Roy, who will drop down to No. 4, as reported by ESPNcricinfo last week.”I got a call from Joe Root after a bit of time off and he said he’d like me to go at the top of the order and try to get us off to a good start,” Denly said.”Obviously Jason is going to bat four and that’s great for English cricket. With Jason Roy in the team we are a better team and with him coming in at four, hopefully with the new ball worn off and myself and Rory Burns doing our job at the top, it allows him to come in and play his way. He’s a great player to have there.”Denly was England’s top-scorer with 12 in their woeful first innings of 67 all out while his 50 in the second innnings was overshadowed by Stokes’ match-winning 135. But Denly didn’t mind.”Obviously it was a proud moment but as any top-order batter you come off after getting out wanting more runs,” Denly said. “Having made 50 it would have been nice to go on and get a bigger score, but thankfully we had ‘King Stokes’ coming in and finishing it for us.”I don’t think it’s going to sink in for a while. It was a remarkable day and one that will be remembered forever, so to be part of it was very special.”
As we approach the transfer deadline on 1 February, Leeds United have yet to make any additions to their squad. The Whites are chasing immediate promotion back to the top-flight and are currently set for the Championship play-offs, but they're only two points off the automatic promotion spots, albeit having played a game more.
One of the players they've targeted this month is Liverpool under-21 talent Mateusz Musialowski, and now there's been a significant development. Leeds carried out some initial checks and then got in touch with the Reds to express interest in a deal for the Pole, whose contract is due to expire at the end of the season.
Daniel Farke wants "attacking reinforcements" before the window is out, but "several" other clubs were said to be in the frame for Musialowski too. It's Leeds, though, who appear to have stolen a decisive march.
Leeds closing in on Musialowski after making breakthrough on Friday
According to Football Insider, Leeds are "edging closer" to a deal for Musialowski. While the 21-year-old is very much in-demand, officials from the West Yorkshire outfit made some big progress on Friday and are now advancing towards an agreement that should see them win the race.

Farke's initial plan is for Musialowski, who can play across the frontline, to act as a back-up attacker, but he will of course hope to force his way into the starting line-up in the long-term. He's yet to make a competitive first-team appearance, but now he has the chance to launch his career.
Leeds must seal full-back deal after securing Musialowski
Assuming a deal for Musialowski is indeed agreed from here, then it could spark a lively end to the transfer window for Leeds. Farke's main priority should be to acquire another right-back, because while Archie Gray has played the second-most minutes of anybody in the squad, they currently risk being caught short after cancelling Djed Spence's loan early and allowing Luke Ayling to make a temporary move to Middlesbrough. The club have been looking at a number of possible options, including West Ham's Ben Johnson, Burnley's Connor Roberts and Tottenham's Ben Davies.
There was a possibility of some activity in the centre of defence too after Charlie Cresswell was axed from the squad amid concerns over his attitude. If he left, then Farke was expected to seek another centre-half to ensure that he had four options available in that position. However, speaking in his press conference ahead of Leeds' FA Cup tie against Plymouth on Saturday, he said that the "door is back open" for Cresswell to feature after fresh talks in recent days.
During those conversations, he told his manager that "he definitely wants to stay", and that clearly makes a move for a target like Liverpool's Nat Phillips less likely, although you can never rule anything out in the hectic final phase of a window.
With just days remaining in the January transfer window it looks as though Arsenal will coast through the month without strengthening their ranks.
Supporters may well ask why they haven't boosted their chances of winning the Premier League but not many clubs in England have completed business in 2024.
That's largely due to the threat of financial fair play with the Gunners allegedly not being in the right place to spend a hefty amount of cash. That's hardly surprising considering their summer spending with Declan Rice arriving for £105m and Kai Havertz for £65m.
As a result, the summer window seems more appropriate to launch an assault to find a new striker.
Strikers Arsenal could sign in 2024
Recent talk has been dominated with talk of a move for Ivan Toney with the Brentford star seemingly set on a move to a 'big club' before too long.
However, with an £80m valuation a move was never going to be completed this month. There have even been rumours of a move for Karim Benzema while another option seems to be Victor Osimhen. Again, though, the latter commands an almighty asking price with a £111m release clause in his contract.

A cheaper option could well be that of Bologna forward Joshua Zirkzee. Having signed Takehiro Tomiyasu from the Italian club, it's likely relations will be sweet between the two parties but a deal won't be straightforward.
According to new reports from Corriere dello Sport, the Gunners are ready to bid an amount of £40m in the summer but his club are holding out for cash.
Joshua Zirkzee at Bayern Munich
The situation is further complicated by Bayern Munich's buy-back clause and interest from Manchester United.
How Zirkzee compares to Robin van Persie
Mention Robin van Persie's name around the Emirates Stadium and you'll get a smirk, perhaps a few choice words through gritted teeth or merely pure anger.
After joining Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson after a barren trophyless spell with Arsenal, he was a villain in north London. The fact he then scored twice against the Gunners for his new side only sought to make things worse.
That said, the flying forward must be remembered with a degree of fondness. After all, this is a player who scored a whopping 132 goals in 278 games for the club.
Plucked from Feyenoord at a young age, he spent time in the same Rotterdam-based academy that would later go on to produce the likes of Gini Wijnaldum and Jurrien Timber.
Interestingly, they've also produced the aforementioned Zirkzee. It must be said, however, that they aren't completely alike.
First and foremost, the Bologna star is a right-footed player, but that doesn't mean he doesn't boast a ferocious left foot too. Indeed, analyst Ben Mattinson has previously highlighted the 22-year-old's "ambipedal ability" with plenty of his goals throughout the 2023/24 campaign coming on his alleged weaker foot.
Admittedly, Zirkzee hasn't been truly prolific this term, scoring nine goals in 23 games, but the style of play he offers is truly "special" as Mattinson claimed. Four of those strikes have indeed been on his left side, a statistic that highlights the all-round danger the Dutchman provides.
What might also appeal to the Arsenal fanbase is the striker's "Kane-esque" passing ability. Like Van Persie was, this isn't just a forward content with scoring goals.
Manchester United transfer target Joshua Zirkzee in action in Serie A.
Arsenal's great Dutchman of years gone by supplied 58 goals during his time in the English capital, also capable of playing off the wing in his formative days. Zirkzee may not boast the same versatility at this stage of his career but he is creative, producing four assists this term.
The young Bologna star is evidently still raw but the unique profile would offer plenty to Arsenal. If he could be half the player Van Persie was in England then Mikel Arteta will no doubt be overjoyed should a move be completed.

According to , Ten Hag could be set to stay at Old Trafford for next season. Recent reports had claimed that the Dutchman was set to leave the club this summer, with the likes of former Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, Brentford's Thomas Frank and Roberto De Zerbi identified as possible replacements. However, it has since been revealed that Ten Hag staying at the club for the 2024-25 season remains a possibility.

United have assessed several options ahead of the summer and have been in contact with their representatives. Previous reports had claimed that Ten Hag would be sacked no matter what the outcome was at Wembley Stadium, although this appears wide of the mark as a formal review of his performance now gets underway this week.
WHAT TEN HAG SAID
Speaking after the 2-1 win over City on Saturday, Ten Hag offered a defiant response when questioned about his future.
"If they don't want me anymore, I go somewhere else and win trophies, that's what I've done my whole career," he said. "I don’t know. The only thing I’m doing is preparing my team, developing my team. This is a project for me. When I came in I can say it was a mess. Now we are better. We are not where we want to be.
"Football is about winning trophies. I want to play the best football, dynamic, attacking football but in the end you have to win games and trophies. That’s the mentality we brought in. This was our one opportunity and we did it. I‘m very proud of the players and staff."

His 2 for 18 and 16 not out off eight balls was central to Multan Sultans’ first win in PSL 2019
The Report by Deivarayan Muthu16-Feb-2019
Shahid Afridi goes through his trademark celebratory routine•PCB/PSL
How the game played out Shahid Afridi rolled back the years and produced a vintage all-round performance to headline Multan Sultans’ first win in PSL 2019. On a tired Dubai pitch, he unfurled all his tricks with the ball – the legbreak, googly, topspinner, flipper and even the seam-up variety – to come away with 2 for 18 in his four overs. Twenty-two-year-old seamer Ali Shafiq also impressed with 2 for 11 as Islamabad United cobbled out a mere 125 for 7 in their 20 overs.Multan’s batsmen then threatened to make heavy weather of the chase, but Afridi’s dash (16* off 8 balls) and captain Shoaib Malik’s calm (31 not out off 29 balls) ushered the side home. With his family in the stands, Afridi provided a blockbuster finish, with back-to-back sixes off seamer Waqas Masood in the penultimate over.Turning points Luke Ronchi greeted Afridi’s bowling with a pulled six and then hit Andre Russell out of the attack with 6,6,4. During the process, he reached a 31-ball fifty and by then Islamabad were 57 for 2 in the eighth over. In his next over, Afridi generated some overspin and had Ronchi splicing a slog-sweep to deep square leg. Two balls later, he was at it in the infield, pulling off a sharp, low catch at short midwicket to dismiss Hussain Talat for 7 off 12 balls. Shafiq did not concede a single boundary in his four overs and burst through the gate of Shadab Khan, who had been promoted to No. 6. There would be no way back for Islamabad.Star of the dayAfridi (who else?) After claiming the key wicket of Ronchi, he bowled Philip Salt with a quick fizzer. How dare you attempt to scoop Afridi over the keeper’s head? He could have got another wicket had he hung onto to a fairly regulation return catch when Samit Patel scooped a legbreak back to him in his last over.Afridi then walked into bat in the chase, with Multan needing 25 off 21 balls. He hit 16 of those, including the back-to-back sixes that sealed victory. The big missWaqas nipped out opener Johnson Charles with a good-length ball that seamed away just enough, but that good length turned out to be bad length in the end overs. Andre Russell tore him into shreds, taking 15 off four balls from him, including a six into the top tier over wide long-on.Where the teams standIslamabad slid from first to fourth, while Multan leapfrogged them to third. Quetta Gladiators, Karachi Kings, Multan and Islamabad all have two points each, with only the run rate separating them.
Liverpool are showing genuine interest in completing the signing of a player dubbed the "most underrated player in the Premier League", according to a fresh transfer update this week.
Liverpool transfer news
The Reds have looked like a completely different side to the one that toiled so badly last season, enjoying a promising start to the 2023/24 campaign. The 1-1 draw away to Manchester City was proof that Liverpool are in the mix in the Premier League title race, with new midfielders such as Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch making a noticeable difference.
This still isn't the near-perfect squad that Jurgen Klopp assembled a few years ago, however, with further additions needed to make it truly formidable, whether that be an out-and-out defensive midfielder, another centre-back option or a right-back deputy to Trent Alexander-Arnold.
OGC Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has again emerged as a Liverpool target, according to a recent report, so it certainly seems as though Klopp may not be done with strengthening his choices in the middle of the park.
Liverpool have the funds to hijack "very dangerous" star from major suitors
The other suitors are worried about Liverpool’s interest…
ByHenry Jackson Nov 27, 2023 Liverpool want Douglas Luiz
According to a new update from TEAMtalk, Liverpool are interested in signing Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, but are not alone in showing an admiration for him.
Aston Villa midfielderDouglas Luiz.
"Aston Villa’s intentions to hold on to Douglas Luiz will be tested by interest from all of their top four rivals – Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool, TEAMtalk has learned.
"Luiz has been an outstanding performer for Villa this season as Unai Emery’s side have forced themselves into the traditional Champions League places.TEAMtalk has learned that the three clubs above them – Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool – all hold genuine levels of interest in the central midfielder. Whilst Villa’s stance is that he is not for sale, their resistance is going to be tested by the time we get to the summer window."
Luiz could be an exceptional signing by Liverpool, with the Brazilian proving to be a huge reason for Villa's outstanding season to date, as they sit fourth in the Premier League table currently. In fact, Luiz's statistics this year are way up – he has scored five goals and chipped in with two assists in 13 league appearances in 2023/24, as well as enjoying an 88.8% pass completion rate and averaging 2.3 tackles per game in the competition.
The 25-year-old has earned massive praise from Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson in recent times, too, with the Arsenal legend saying of him:
"Douglas Luiz is the most underrated player in the Premier League. No-one talks about him. He turns up for Aston Villa week in, week out. He's box to box, he scores goals and passes the ball extremely well. He's just a very good player."

Luiz could add even more brilliance to Liverpool's midfield, arguably possessing more pace and dynamism than Mac Allister in the deep-lying role, but also being capable of providing quality further up the pitch, as his numbers so far this season show.
It won't be easy for the Reds to get their man, considering the level of interest in him and the fact that Villa will be desperate to keep him, but he should be looked at as a fantastic option.
Tottenham Hotspur have finally relinquished their hold on the Premier League's top spot after one of the most entertaining games of the season against Chelsea, which was followed up with a loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers in their final game before the international break.
Ange Postecoglou has turned a team that looked destined for the bottom half of the table only a few months ago into one of the best teams in the country, and were it not for some silly red cards and unfortunate injuries, his team might well have claimed six points from their previous two games as opposed to zero.
However, with Manchester City back in first place and a heap of players now missing through injury or suspension, the Australian will have to use all of his managerial nous to see his side bounce back with a win against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Football FanCast has previewed and predicted how they'll get on in their next six games, which include matches against Manchester City, Newcastle United and Everton.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
25th November, Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.
After a long international break – arguably too long – Tottenham will play host to Unai Emery's Aston Villa on Saturday, November 25th.
The Claret and Blue had a rough start to the season as Newcastle thrashed them 5-1 at St James' Park on the opening day, but since then, they have found a real vein of form and look to be one of the most dangerous teams in the league.
Their 6-1 win over the highly-rated Brighton has been their most impressive performance so far and should serve as a warning for the ultra-attacking Spurs.
That said, Postecoglou's side has looked brilliant from the word go, although, with the sheer number of injuries and suspensions taking their toll on his starting XI, we can't see Villa losing this one.
Expect a lot of goals for this one, but we're just about siding with the Villans.
Prediction: Tottenham 2-3 Aston Villa
Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur
2nd December, Premier League, Etihad Stadium
Manchester City manager PepGuardiola
Following a challenging home game against Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur get back onto the road as they make their way to the Etihad to take on Pep Guardiola's treble-winning Manchester City side.
Now, for most teams, this would be the most imposing game of the season and one that fans would almost expect to result in a loss, but interestingly, Spurs have a remarkably good record against City.
In their last five league encounters, the Lilywhites have emerged as victors three times whilst losing twice. What makes that statistic even more surprising is that Spurs were generally playing much worse football in that period. So now that things are a bit more even, could Tottenham get another win at City's expense?
If you had asked us this question before Spurs' game against Chelsea, we probably would have said yes, but the injuries and loss of momentum from their last two games make it hard to see how the Lilywhites can win this game.
We reckon it'll be a reasonably straightforward City win.
Prediction: Manchester City 3-1Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United
5th December, Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
The Lilywhites welcome West Ham United in their first midweek clash of December.
The Hammers started the season brightly and looked like strong candidates for a top-six finish at one point, but recent performances, particularly at Villa Park, evinced that perhaps that isn't their level.
Nonetheless, a top-half finish is certainly achievable for Moyes' side, who will have one eye on the Europa League for much of the campaign.
The hosts will need to be wary of the electrifying Jarrod Bowen, who has netted eight goals in 12 league outings this term whilst the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Lucas Paquetá, among others, can certainly hurt any opposition on their day.
Recent meetings have favoured Spurs, as the Hammers haven't managed to secure victory in any of their last four encounters, conceding defeat in three of those.
Though, if Moyes sets his team out to sit back and frustrate the hosts, that could be their best avenue to victory, even if it isn't the most pleasing football to watch, at times.
His side have shown their capabilities of playing counter-attacking football this season, so should they do the same here, we expect an unlikely away victory.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 West Ham United
Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United
10th December, Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Despite having no European football to contend with this season and an early exit from the League Cup, Tottenham will have just three days to prepare for their game against Newcastle United after hosting West Ham.
That said, it's the same story for the Toon, with them playing Everton just three days before their trip to north London, so it should be all square in that regard.
The Toon's form has been quite inconsistent in recent weeks, with their loss to Borussia Dortmund followed up with a draw to Wolverhampton Wanderers, which itself was followed by back-to-back wins against Manchester United and Arsenal before defeats to Dortmund and Bournemouth wrapped up their fixtures before the international break.
This topsy-turvy form could help them in this game, or it could make them an easy target for Postecoglou's free-flowing football; we reckon it'll likely be the latter.
That said, the Magpies are always good for a goal, and so while we think Spurs will ultimately come away with all three points, this game should be a thrilling one for the neutral.
Prediction: Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 Newcastle United
Five days after they play host to Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur will have to make the 103-mile trip to Nottingham Forest's City Ground for what should be a brilliant match.
The game will see Brennan Johnson return to his old stomping ground with his new side, so it'll be interesting to see the response he receives.
In terms of the match itself, Tottenham will be the clear favourites. They may have some injuries to deal with, but their fantastic form this season and free-flowing football have made them one of the most challenging teams to deal with, and their position of fourth in the table (at the time of writing) is evidence of that.
However, Forest have shown that they are no pushovers this season, and an impressive 2-0 win over Aston Villa recently is the perfect example of that.
We reckon Spurs will come away with all three points from this one, but the Tricky Trees won't make it easy for them away from home.
Prediction: Nottingham Forest 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton
23rd December, Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
In their final game before Christmas day, Tottenham Hotspur play host to the relegation-battling Everton in the aftermath of the Toffees' record points deduction.
The Blues now find themselves down in 19th place on four points after the Premier League deducted ten from their tally, and while they are now likely to spend the rest of the season fighting tooth and nail to get out of the relegation zone, their performances have been that of a solid midtable team.
Wins against Crystal Palace, West Ham, Burnley, Brentford and more show that they are far better than where they currently sit, and we're sure Postecoglou will be telling his team the same.
The hosts will certainly be the favourites for this game, as even with injuries to key players, they should have enough quality to pick up three points, especially at home.
That said, if Sean Dyche can inspire a siege mentality among his players, they could spring a surprise.
